Clark IV, a world under fire.

The Interstellar Transit Authority currently holds the planet under martial law. The planet has seen a turbulent past century, guerilla fighters have been holding it hard and there has been no progress in taking hold.

Mercenary companies have been brought in to step in as a force multiplier, but they are beholden to no one but whoever pays the most.

Corporate entities have also begun to set their eyes on the planet below.

It is hell.

You decide to buckle down and just move forward, you're still under contract... and supposedly this is your chance out. This job should free you... at least what that's what Hannibal said.

>>1129125
You ask Nora what could have caused the memory loss, since it wasn't related to your head injuries. You watch as she crosses her arms in consideration.

:NoraIcon: Well see, you didn't lose the memories, they were just locked away. Could have been emotional suppression, you deliberately sealed them off yourself and the implants just reacted to that. Or it could have been intentional by the company during your augmentation, maybe as some control method to keep you focused, they weren't hard to unlock so I don't know if it was intended to be permanent, but the Corps are kinda assholes all around.

:NoraIcon: If it bothers you, do you have anyone you could ask? Anyone you trust?

...guess we could ask Hannibal. From what we saw from our memories, he's just as much of a victim as we were. At the very least we can ask to check the contract to see if they put in that provision. On the other hand, why is Hannibal not listed as a handler?

Ask if there's any chance these memories are fake.
>>
No. 1129201 ID: ce8213

Those memories didn't seem that traumatic that we would block them. And I'm not sure why the company would want to make you forget that you owe them so much.

Could we have seen something we weren't supposed to see?
>>

>>1129201
If we saw something secret and the memories were blocked for that reason, wouldn't it have been harder to unlock them?
I think either it was accidental, it was self-inflicted, or there's some false information in there and we were meant to unlock them.

Strange, the only thing that they might have wanted to cover up is:

1. The identity of Disco. (Is he in trouble too? He's just a suit!)
2. The identity of Hannibal. (but you didn't have any dirt on him that hadn't already been leaked)
3. You stole a mech (so you won't run off with the latest company mech?)
4. Ava had your memories erased so you wouldn't remember she betrayed you. (AVAAAAAAA)

Maybe you could ask him to walk through what he's doing, like the first aid stuff, might ease your mind if you ask him to explain it while he's doing it, instead of assuming the worst and running with it until you have a panic attack.

Tehehe, you should kiss himmmmm

I mean he's being so nice and kind, and it's a good way to show thanks to a nice boy! Im sure he'd appreciate his efforts being appreciated even if your words don't work so good right now, it's a good compromise especially after breaking his bathroom mirror <3

YOU SHOULD KISS HIM

It's a good way to start this new friendship! First impressions matter the most y'know and he's still being so nice even after you tried to stab him! Im sure you can still make it even better with a big kiss! He's so cute too tehehe! He's so dumb he'll basically do whatever you want at this point without even questioning it tehehe!!

I think the intrusive thoughts are back.
Well.
The other ones.
Not the mostly benign ones.
I guess im an intrusive thought too.
Wow.
Heavy.
Anyway, while im having non-existential crisis here, or whatever its called when your imagination starts doubting its reality, you focus on one little set of things.

Dont hump the bunny.
Dont kiss the bunny.
Let him help you.
Thank him.
Make a new, slightly naive friend who was kind enough to want to help you without getting something from you.
Be at peace for a moment.

I am not the thought of humping. i am the thought of passively sniffing the air, observation and objectively true statements with rose tinted glasses or terrible scary truths, i am also the thought of snacking between meals like a small tortia chip with salsa and cheese in a microwave so it has that perfect crunch and elasticity that you can eat in 4 minutes 2 of those is letting it cool.

Its less scary to think about then the fact this little boy can completely and utterly overpower us with no effort at all without a clue, and he is cool but not as cool as Jayden who is as shown by actions and words ready to kill for our well being, and tolerates our weirdness which is pretty amazing like he dropped everything for us. Forgiven us for causing a crash more concerned about our well being.

An excuse to draw my OCs (and a few borrowed ones) in unflattering outfits.

A wholesome slice-of-life starring the Yamelle-Damas.
Rest here, fellow questers, for there are no overarching plots to save the galaxy. No action or conflicts. No complications but keeping up with the neighbors. Just a village-contained, family simulator about the calm life of chupian-folk.

What Happens?
Whatever can. I’m not going to think deeply about it. Could be boring. Could be sweet. Could stop suddenly. Keepin’ it simple. Think The Sims but without removing pool ladders.

NSFW?
There are definitely naked people in the bathhouse. You’ll see lots of that stuff. Lewds? Perhaps. Sure.

Yamelle: And then what happened?

Stranger: Exactly that. I went home.

Stranger: I’m sorry it couldn’t be wrapped in a bow, but I saw what I saw.

Stranger: I don’t think I was allowed out until the next day. The mender had since ‘cured’ the village and went on to the next one. I never saw the splinter again either--he probably took the credit as I feared he would.

Stranger: When I was able, I visited the pond. Still no trace of what I experienced. Did it open a hole and drain all the water? Have I saved and cured the village? Or did I unleash something terrible into this world?

Stranger: The other children have made fun of me for it. Perhaps I saw only what a child’s eyes could think up.

Stranger: Still, I kept the tradition going. But I don’t ask for lodging or anything. I typically keep silent about it.

Yamelle: Well that was a... fascinating story!

Yamelle: I think the kids will like that one! When they’re old enough to listen anyhow...

Yamelle: I’m sure you were probably right. It doesn’t sound like it kept you from trying all your life.

The stranger is silent, and stares out into space as the poolwater is undisturbed. Ma is getting sleepy, indicated by her stretch and light yawn.

Stranger: ...

Stranger: I think... I’m ready to move on.

Stranger: Thanks for keeping me company--I haven’t shared a story like that in a long while.

Stranger: I was... having a look around the village; it’s quite healthy. Healthiest I’ve seen in my years. I still did a bit of mending here and there.

Stranger: ...little things. Precautions.

Stranger: ...

Stranger: There’s something maybe you ought to have.

Stranger: In my basket is something like an ivory awl.

Stranger: At any point when you find a cyst in the ground, bury the awl somewhere nearby. Point facing down like a spike. But careful not to break it. Don’t worry, it aint another splinter--more like acupuncture. Just make sure it’s done before the cyst is lanced.

Gabe leans back against the wall and shakes the last few drops of water from his thermos before sighing. He opens a gate to tuck it away in his storage dimension. His body aches from just over an hour of work, having already spent most of his mana reserves trying to alleviate the backed up shipping traffic. Even with his boosted spellcasting ability, opening ship-sized gates one after the other quickly drained him.

He looks over to Nixxy and Fennel, who thankfully arrived to take over the operation. The pair mentioned something about “the other Kol and Casey” and warned him about “Dowpelwgawngewrs” before eagerly tackling the logistics nightmare.

Gabe stews over their warnings, watching as a hand made of water lifts a fishing trawler, barnacles and all, out of the harbor. The crew hangs on, their nets and fishing traps rattling around the deck, while Nixxy carefully maneuvers the craft through the shallows and into navigable waters.

Who's currently in possession of the Aegis? Gabe, or? Is it in the form of the belt-brooch, or?

If its on Gabe, he has to keep it safe from theft (mundane or magical, e.g. fey agents). This is also a chance to relax a bit in his pocket plane, perhaps.

Said pocket plane is also a convenient holding cell for the doppelgangers (assuming you keep its residents from starving, dehydrating or running out of air) if you can trick them into going inside (or tossing them inside) and then just leaving and stranding them.

In fact, for future baddies, making a pocket plane that is explicitly just a holding cell could be useful.

While we couldn't solve this mystery ourselves due to our limitations as a monster as going against our boss would be trouble, at least giving this quest to Hammerer would help make light of the conspiracy going on at the heroes guild. and Dizelu showed he's weak enough for a mere monster like you to blackmail if you so choose

You stop just inside the hall, still leaning heavily on Brother Juan. The sides of the space are crowded with folk in gaudy costumes, all lace and ruffles. Mice, rats, shrews, even some weasels. Almost all of them are puppets, but not the decrepit kind you saw downstairs. These have neatly groomed fur and all their limbs. Aside from the wires, its their glassy dead eyes that give them away. In a distressingly synchronized move they all turn to look at you.

Its the ones that don't turn as quickly you notice more. Here and there you spot some you seem to still be living. A mouse maid cringing behind the line, clutching a broom. An ermine in a ridiculous floppy hat, tugging at his too tight ruff collar. A rat lady hiding behind her fan. You even get a glimpse of bright butterfly wings, away down near the end.

Also near the end you spot Lisel. She's standing next to the throne, still dressed in her familiar coat. As she sees you her face brightens, though not by much as she looks back at the throne's occupant.

Seated at the end of the hall is what must be the smallest fox you've ever seen. As it shifts haltingly on its wires to regard you, you realize with revulsion that its a kit. The body is draped in a rich red cloak lined with fur, a brocaded tunic, and topped with a jeweled crown. Light glints off its glass eyes as it leans forward. Its movements are stiff, with a slight shudder after each one as though its limbs are constantly locking into place. It gestures you forward with suprising articulation, and its jaw flaps but the voice you hear is tinny and comes from above you.

"Ah, the man who has given my troops such difficulty, brought to heel at last. Come, approach the throne and introduce yourself to the court good sir."

Thank you all for answering my questions. I have enough data to see what you liked in the current chapter and what you want for the new one.

* Your answer to the first question is that you all want everyone to have porn weapons, but I will add one additional request to it, that it is random who has porn or normal weapons.

* Your answers to the second question show that the majority of you want to see the defeated enforcers make an appearance. But I also see your wish to see new faces, and don't worry, there will be new opponents to fight in the second half.

* Your answers to the third question, putting all the numbers into a count, this is what your answers are.
Lady Buttania has 4 points.
Pound Cake has 12 points.
Rope Bunny has 13 points.
Burrow Buster has 11 points.
Whipsalot has 10 points.
And Wax Pornetic has 14 points.
I counted their placements as the point numbers, so the top three are Pound Cake, Rope Bunny, and Wax Pornetic. This was an interesting thing to see what you liked and what you didn't.

* Your answers to the fourth question, Wax Pornetic, left an impression on you. So did Whipsalot. In the lesser aspect, Rope Bunny, Kunoichi Bunny, Skull Bunny, Bunny Breaker, and Burrow Buster. I will take that into account.

* Your answers to the fifth you think that I didn't go too far. Well, that is reasuring to hear.

* Your answers to the final question are more blood, more weird scenarios, and more enemies. I will try to fulfill that to the best of my ability.

With all the answers, let's end this part of the story by giving me a suggestion of what you want me to draw for this quest, and it can be anything. So give me your final suggestions.

Dear mom, hello mother, Hey mom, no fuck why is this so hard Dear mom,

Happy birthday! You know, if you'd be here, you'd be 26 again? We're on a 24 month cycle out here.
Dad is doing well. His work with the provisional government has netted us a nice place closer to where he works. It's still 3 hours from here to there though. At least it's not 4 anymore, right? Bright side of things like you always said.
I'm doing fine. I'm about to start my Transitory semester. Wait. Right, that's something we only have up here. So yeah, because of the 24 month cycle, the campus has this extra semester in summer to prep us for the change in setting and difficulty between Entrance year and Freshman year. I dunno what change is setting means, it's still the same campus, but that's what it says in the handbook. I'll write again when I have time, but things are gonna get busy.
I miss you mom. Happy birthday again.

"End recording."

Hey.
I recognise him
Is he the guy who loaned you the harmonica?
Slinky.
He wants it back.

Ok, ok.
Putting my whimsy away.
Its possible theyre one of the original denizens remains.
Definitely a heavy set creature in life by the wide feet, long balancing tail and spread of the foot talons when it jumps.
Its caught in a loop of trying something that isnt working.
Suggests a command given and it having minimal autonomy.

All the same, we have info for the team
Get to the foot of the rope and we'll carry a message to come down quietly as theres one hostile skelamajig.

An unnecessary but interesting foray into the lore of our world: History has led us to broadly reject the idea of magic, but that has not stopped magical thinking. While we had once thought the world was magical, we were able to create detailed theories describing nearly every single mechanism and predict how systems would develop further and further forward. Anything that can be theorized about and predicted, we call science. We call everything else magic. The ways of science have become so advanced, in fact, that it is widely believed that everything can be explained by it in one way or another, though we may not know it yet.

Thus, the existence of magic is more of a philosophical question than a physical one. This leads to a big complication when it comes to the idea of a "soul", though. The word "consciousness" has come to replace the word "soul" in scientific discussions, but it hasn't replaced the idea. Fundamentally, the issue is that consciousness is pretty much impossible for us to define. We can describe aspects of our own conscious experience, but we can't actually observe consciousness in other people. A crucial step in the scientific method (The set of rules we follow to 'make' science) is observation, and since we can't make observations, we can't really apply science to consciousness. (There is debate about this, but the fact that there is debate at all is an indication of the issue)

The belief in an afterlife comes from a time before modern science, but it nonetheless stays relevant because of the questions science can't currently answer.

Also, it should be noted that the information you receive about our world comes from a tiny self-selected slice of the population, so you aren&#

Fox here. This one isn't urgent. So... Souls. In some parts of existence, as far as the locals are concerned, there is no empirically observable gods, no empirically observable souls, no empirically observable magic, no empirically observable afterlife, no observable aspects of reality with an inherent moral agenda at all. In those places, sometimes the word 'soul' even gets used to describe the body parts made of matter! In that part of things, there is a deterministic, matter-based reality, based on reductionist principles with bottom-up causation processes causing emergent phenomena. And this can actually make, over sufficiently large timescales, based on the concrete, unchangeable mathematical laws of physics, the following things: life, life with a basic level of awareness, and life with full intelligence and self awareness and the capacity to grow.

I feel like a gave a pretty generalist overview of things. Death is an unknown and people have various ideas about it.
I also share the whole "mind and soul are the same thing" perspective.
It's mostly why I was so horrified by Mina's explanation of your afterlife. A ton of uncomfortable implications with the ways the gods are mucking about with people there.

Unlike Magic, Science is not a search for quintessential truth. Science is about determining what is impossible and calculating the improbability of what is improbable.

Truth to one person may mean something entirely different to another, thereby preventing the transmission of understanding from one school of magical thought to another. But with science? We find what is impossible for everyone, and then it is up to them to decide what they wish to do with the remainder; what may be possible for anyone.

The results speak for themselves. With a sandbox of unexplored possibility combined with a set of fundamental constraints restricting us from the contradictory, tools designed from such scientific inquiry are engineered to be usable by anyone.

But these days, we find ourselves adrift in ignorance. Starved of magic, we fall into delusions and tribes. And the worlds are getting... stupider. When one cannot scientifically disprove that a tool of science is bereft of any magic whatsoever... well. It's not looking good.

A black-clad figure zips out of a nearby tree. The same one as before.

MARY: “It’s them.”

???: “Apologies. Just a precaution.”

The masked person grabs Sam by the face and looks deeply into her eyes. She kicks them off of her, and they promptly do the same to Uberto and the rest.

UBERTO: ”Hey! At least tell us who you are if you’re going to come in here and start examining us.”

They step back and seem to consider for a moment.

MILLER: “I work for the Ministry of Memetic Philosophy. Please, call me Miller. Some well doubles of you came here earlier, hence the inspection.”

SIMONE: “Mary’s mentioned you before. It’s nice to finally meet you.”

MILLER: “A shame we couldn’t meet in kinder times. Your mentor has been cursed, and the only person I know of who can undo it is the person who cursed her.”

Miller looks at Sam again, as if expecting her to say or do something. Or, perhaps they feel compelled to look at her for some subconscious reason.

someone couldn't leave well enough alone... Is that chef seriously petty enough to interfere with us? If so, he's not smart enough to know I'm in a pretty good position to ruin his plans a little if he ruins ours.
I played nice and left his affairs alone, but if he's going to do this and think he's gonna get away scott free without consequences as he, an outside force, tries to interfere with this world, then we'll just have to play a bit dirty and interfere with his affairs too. Feels like he's breaking some rules here meddling with things, so alls fair if I breaks some rules too to make him regret this, right? That said...

psst, Maya, you can hear me, right? I didn't want to have to do this, but depending on how things go here, may you send a message to Triumphant, and/or Dervan for me later please? I'll let you know what the message is later if it comes to it, but hopefully won't have to come to it...

Since we already can't trust that chef, and he's interfering with our psychic link, it seems like he's trying to manipulate things in his favor that will hurt us here. We are going to have to find a way to contact bobbie, and find out what is going on in here, or impede this meeting in some way... that shadowy figure is our best bet.

C. Just simply talking to them is fine enough distraction I think. But then again, maybe spy rat can help by "accidentally" slipping out of Maya's hand, and running towards the guard to startle him or something? It will keep the guard's eyes down on the rat, and not up on the ceiling, y'know?

Why would Bobbie specifically leave the rat outside...? Was she banking on the telepathic stuff? Well if she was coerced the rat should be able to say so. So rat why did she leave you out here? Other option is she did so by choice perhaps unaware of the tele-defenses. Or she knew but what needs such secrecy that she'd deny us all intel? Just too many unknowns. Worst case he's an assassin here to kill Abdle or Bobbie or Stein or even Maya for all we know. For extra spice perhaps Stein is sacrificing guards so he can plausibly deny it all. Or to test us, see if we'd "save" him from enemies. Less bad would be a spy after secrets. Just too many unknowns. With what little we have the safest path is to alert the guards. Whatever's supposed to happen stops dead.

Early autumn is pleasant in Cedar Ridge. Summer's hottest days are behind you and the shade of the Douglas fir trees that blanket the town keep the underbrush cool.

North of the lake that divides the town are sets of woods. Interrupted only by mud roads and storm drains that rarely see use outside of the rainy season. This grove is only a mile from the town's one high school. Frequented by teens and alcoholics alike for bonfire parties that leaves the smell of ash in the air. This far east into Oregon the breeze is warm and sluggish, trapped in by mountain ranges.

From where you stand you can hear when the occasional truck passes through Cedar Ridge's main road. Barely. It helps you keep your facing when you're unsure which way is home.

You are in the north in the outskirts of town.

"Anyways, git, can we head to the docks?"

Leave the shrineforest, start walking along the river.

"Why the docks?"
"The druid, she seemed a bit startled. Kept mentioning a 'gilded ship', something about it being bad luck."

Scents change passing from the town center into the iascull orchards. Wet, heavy, lush, organic.
We walk along the dikes, large, sturdy trees holding together the banks on the rushing river. Past each side grow dense rows of still firm, yet rather sagging-branched trees wrapped in waxy vines, surrounded by ferns, themselves encircled in canals packed with cattails and algae, bridged by narrow wooden rails, fish darting between reeds and insects buzzing about. Surely farmers go about its maintenance, but through such dense foliage they are barely seen.

Reiko (still linked) directs the ship AI to 'jiggle' the iced-up doors with a combination of pseudo-physics designed to crush multi-form polymorphic crystalline structures, especially since the surrounding 'liquid water' is highly oxygenated somehow. If she can get control back to the doors, maybe she could try out a Binary code by having the door open-and-shut at specific intervals to communicate at a distance. Or just lock the doors, blast off, and call this expedition a bust.
