...It's simple.
You rejected the engine.
The labor of the people is not your birthright. Everyone who works deserves to get paid, not just in resources but in respect. And even the strongest and smartest may not have special skills - and perspectives - that a little guy might happen to have. It's all one big complex machine, and if you stress or neglect any part, you risk the whole thing becoming a dysfunctional mess.
When you and your cohorts refused to pay every non-Volto what you know deep down was their fair share, you screwed yourselves over. They won't work nearly as well or as hard as you know they could have, not when their reward is to be looked at like a butcher looks at cattle. Your kingdom's economy grinds to a halt.
And here you are.

You may have the resolve to do what needs to be done, but are you sure this is necessary?
How many negotiations have failed or were betrayed? How many non-combatants are you targeting with artillery? Who profits from this situation, and are you sure they don't have influence on the order?
Are you sure there is no other sane option?

What this man speaks of is not what any god would want, and he knows that. If this man is willing to kill a child to get what he wants and still find justification in it, then this man is too dangerous to ally with. Leave now, and save your conscience and what ever honor you have.

If these woods are where I think they are and the time is as far back as I think it is the God inside them will not forgive you. Your suffering would be the stuff of legends, were it not for the fact none would survive to tell the tale. I doubt you can hear us or that we can change the outcome any. If we're talking about the greater good, you need to ask yourself one question.
Which voice is stronger: the one telling you how many people you are protecting, or the one admonishing the people you have stolen from?

I don't know if the creature you killed had anything left inside them. But if they did, maybe this giant-ass army could have captured them alive. Found a solution, given them a mind, and refined the process so that future generations could deal with future monsters in a non-violent and productive fashion.

Because if you are teaching future generations to perform the same actions that personally cause you grief and doubt, are you really doing the right thing?

I'm inclined to believe forgiveness is possible for anything - but also that to be completely forgiven, you need to understand that what you did was wrong, and have changed, and usually have made restitution where possible. It sounds like that may be really difficult, here, and may involve e.g. trying to restore the current inhabitants back to their land. (Also, that doing a thing thinking "I'll just beg forgiveness later" is worse.) And if you're going to need forgiveness, that means what you did was wrong, which means you both already KNOW what the correct answer is, don't you?

War happens when negotiation fails and it is the last thing that those who are conscripted to fight want to occur. When the dust settles and when the fighting is over you are going to have two type of people, those who are on the winning side and the ones who are on the losing. Some will see you as a hero others will see you as a monster. Just hope that bout sides don't see you as latter, hope for the forgiveness from ones who survive because they will be the ones that you will share this world with and they will be the ones who will judge you for the actions that you make.

For now, I must make final preparations for the arrival of our guest, a man named Morphyl Rabas. I've not heard of him, but he professes himself, in his letter of introduction, to be a high class socialite.

Entertaining guests and making socially visible connections is a part of any good politicking. It should be expected.
Hopefully he will be an agreeable sort -- at least it says he is bringing gifts -- but even if he is a boor, it is my instinctive expectation to entertain him for a brief stay so as not to create trouble.

When not speaking to us in person, you will be dealing with a... sort of a multitude of voices. It's a long story, but it's all Lord Muschio.

You're not talking directly to Prince Malto, per se. The Prince's mind is
Well it's just

...

Look, you'll get it eventually. The point is there's going to be a tiny bit of delay. But we'll make sure he gets the message and your well wishes in full. Just think of us as an extension of his ego. A shadow of the persona, if you will. I am thou and thou art I.

Speaking of, we were kind of in the middle of something? Not to be a rush, it's lovely to meet you, but is there anything we can do for you presently?
>>

It's admirable, though somewhat worrying. We have had bad experiences recently with those able to pull us from our own mind, without our awareness. It is usually we, that is, Lord Muschio who decides which shard to speak through. Regardless, it's done, and we are all about honoring prior agreements.

Since we have a moment to speak to you, please inform Lady Mondegreen that the emergency that made Muschio depart in great haste has been dealt with. Were he physically here, he would extend a full apology for running out on you, but lives really were on the line.

Ok, you can try to save face and tell her this orb thing is kind of a gestalt consciousness of many voices loosely based on Muschio's mind.
Or something. Even we don't know how exactly this works. It's all very magical and vague, but we/he/whatever works for addressing the orb voices in your head.

But back to business: we would like to know about Morphyl Rabas. They're due to arrive soon and we'd like to know who we're dealing with.
>>

Eh, whether we are a they or are a sub-category of he is kind of a philosophical discussion, no? Even if WE feel we are a 'they', there is something to be said for the amount of authority the Prince has over us taking priority, as well as the dignity of his station and person? Like, 'we can want to be thought of as they, but Prince can veto that' kind of thing.

Nope, right the first time. I would rather not be referred to or thought of as Prince Malto in and of himself. That's a bit like referring to your kidneys as “yourself”. Your kidneys aren't you, right? They're just a very important part of you that helps filter and maintain your various bodily functions, but they aren't you in your totality.
I'm not sure gender even applies in this context, but since we are a great many voices we do usually go by "they", as in plural, because we are literally multiple voices.
She's probably not gonna get it because she's not plugged into the network, so don't worry about arguing about it. The important thing to remember is just there's a degree of separation here. Sometimes the boss doesn't even listen to us. He's his own guy. Please do not dismiss him as being merely the sum of our parts.
He deserves more respect than that.

Anyway, yeah, as for things you can do, any information you might have about our upcoming guest would be appreciated. We're going into this a little blind, and he's due to arrive any minute now.

Relax Arna, you’re doing fine, you can keep referring to us however you like while talking to us. It seems Moira is simply a stickler for technicalities.
Inform her that we are in fact hosting Morphyl Rabas very soon and that we’d appreciate what she’s willing to share regarding him.

On another note, welcome to the network of the orb of infinite psyche. You are connected not just to Muschio but all his most trusted allies too should you ever desire to meet or talk to them via us.
Also you may or may not be on the money regarding us, Muschio and Moira both insist that we’re an extension of him but we hold the theory that we might have diverged too far to strictly be considered a part of him now. Not that there’s any way to tell or any significant meaning to whether it is proven true or false.

Ah, you're back. That was a bit of an experience. I wonder if the unusual transition is owed to the distance of our communication. I've certainly never had a shard-wearer so far away.

Well, all the same, I'm glad it was a successful connection and a fruitful conversation.
I've made morning preparations and our guest hasn't arrived yet, so there's still some time to catch up with the crew. Seems almost everyone wants my attention this morning.

Dompag and Ashedel first to check our defenses, then Babrakus to ensure our guest facilities are in order for Rabas’s stay. Lastly, I assume Ona is going to be or cook for this, best make sure she has everything thing needs so we can coordinate that with Tislomer.

First order of business is to go for the kitchen and tell Ona to rein in Tislomer so she doesn't prepare four different shades of mint flavoured meals.

this could be a benefit of someone else initiating the connection. Assuming the command was something broad like "connect my mind to Muschio's," it would make sense that it connected to both him and the Orb.

However, it may also mean that everyone with a shard got some insight into the conversation as well, something we should maybe test.

Ask if he would like something as a sign of gratitude. Well, perhaps after the current batch of equipment for our troops is finished.

It looks as sharp as the minds that envisaged it.
Theyll find a way, no doubt.

Big M.
Sudden inspiration.
The monster gate can create life from the unliving.
Would it be possible to use it to create some kind of... hand golem?

A thing that could hold onto your wrist and grasp objects on your behalf?
Perhaps with a shard within it the thing could be attuned to your mind to the point it could react to your instincts?
Worth considering, but would certainly need a better name than just calling it a thing.

Given LeoPendle and Ona's descriptions when we were cobbling together Mock Fang, it would require an object with some form of energy attachment on whatever object we stuck through, psychic or magical or somesuch. So we'd have to make something and then enchant it.
What's more, the forms that come out of the portal have never been under our control. We'd have to get very lucky to somehow make a personalized hand golem for our own use.

I do like the idea of making our own mannikins, though, regardless of how they turn out. It's something to keep on the backburner, for sure.

Considering you need to draw your rapier to fight anyway, a simple mechanism to unsheathe the dagger would be fine, as your good hand will be near your missing one at the time.

Alternatively, we can do something fancy. Maybe an enchantment linked to your scabbard to automatically unsheathe the dagger when you draw your sword?

Sorry, the conversation never touched on any of that. It was mostly about getting used to shard communication with a servant of her's named Ms. Roak.
However, have you given anymore thought or done more research on mortals becoming gods through totemic means or otherwise directly harnessing such power with totems? It might explain how we were able to kill a demon if we've been unwittingly doing that.
Or at the least, have you found out what the smashed idol in that ritual room used to look like? We might want to rebuild it at one point.

Mondegreen was a politician through and through. But she and the other orc nobles have a firm grip on reality... and a mean left hook. She didn't have any info.

But I think we have something to start with.
The Red One. He's a tulpa-based god. Built from the worship, fear, and ideology of the woodland tribes. The closest you'll get to a knowable god. But he's hiding secrets, and I expect many of them are tied to the pantheon somehow.

Dont worry.

You'd better speak with Morphyl Rabas. Lady Mondegreen said he was a seasoned old gentleman who's seen a bit of everything, and is very well-connected, so he might have run into totem gods some time or another.

Ah, no, that's... no, of course. I understand, it was a brief conversation. This investigation isn't the most immediate concern. Still, it would be worth chasing any leads we can find, once we have a chance. Our most formidable and dedicated foe is focused on this symbology, so it follows we should understand it.

I imagine you might also want to ask her about that royal seal you found in the slaver's tent. Find out who the royal patron is behind these attacks, as they're a direct threat to your kingdom.

As for gods... well, I'm working on some theories, but it's largely untested research. Not something you can easily verify in a tome.
And I have no great desire to meet with the Red One, or the Seer, or whatever that entity goes by. The stories of the returning party were quite enough, and I've had my fill of super-natural beings.

Great idea for how to identify the royal seal! Now that we have established a connection to Mondegreen, we can inquire about its owner and their motives for the area!

As for the pantheon we discovered, maybe we can ask Mock Fang for some insight? He was, evidently, a means of defense against retribution from the gods before gaining his current form. If every scar has a story, than he might have a few to tell about the gods and their wrath. Reveal the identity of the god removed from the worship room perhaps?

I do respect what you've said.

In the circumstances, however, I find my mind keeps returning to another aspect of that glade."

"He said he had once been a more... primal God. Something more dangerous, more ominous.
I don't know the circumstances of his change. Was it a natural progression? I suspected at one point he might only be pretending, fitting some new role, but with the way he treated Tislomer, the way he relented... I'm not sure. If it was an act, it felt like he truly didn't want to give it up.
It may sound strange, but he reminds me of you."

>"Of me?"

"You wanted to be a villain once. When I met you. By and by you had to pretend. To act as a more generous leader, to get the alliances and help you needed. But at some point I think you realized the mask you were putting on was your truer face, after all."
>>
No. 1105123 ID: 273c18

Can't agree there. I think Muschio still wants to be a villain, but being a villain has more to do with his opposition to the status quo and his willingness to do anything for victory.
...I don't remember. Why did Muschio want to be evil in the first place?

>You wanted to be a villain once. When I met you. By and by you had to pretend. To act as a more generous leader, to get the alliances and help you needed.
Extraordinarily true.
When this all started he was a young man angry at the world for all that befell him, his family and their legacy. Ready to burn it all down and even started to with that town.
Taking over this place and gaining allies has slowly changed him.
Maybe it was him just growing up and maturing as a leader... or maybe something else is happening. It may be very apt to compare him to the seer in this regard. I'm still thinking that amulet and maybe this place are causing him to channel a totem god somehow.

That's pretty much what we saw; the complex life of a warlord-turned-celebrity.

There was something we saw that you didn't. Flashes of Ms. Bojack's perspective, behind the curtain. They're old, and cranky, and there's a lot of grimdark horror behind the happy overpositivity. And then there was the full transformation of those slavers into... whatever those were. That was creepy even with the happiness filter. But at the end of the day, Red appears to be actively functioning as a positive god with many negative connotations and inner subconscious workings.

What can I say? Some people are @#$%ing complicated.
>>
No. 1105126 ID: a6cdc2

It's not too complicated. You lost a lot, in your youth. You could have lost more, there are people worse off than you were, but there are few who dropped so precipitously. Among those who have, it's so often their own actions that caused it - they can at least claim responsibility for their own fall. As a child of wealth and station, you were promised power, allowed to taste it, to appreciate it - but you didn't HAVE power, yourself. You have been powerless your whole life, and worse, given the education to recognize it, to know what power looks like and to know you had none while you lost your home, your family, your place and purpose in the world.

Villains have power. It is the villains who act, and others who respond. Villains who are unrestrained, even by morality. You have done good things, protected people, done what you could to build a better world, and - since you are a villain - you can say you were not compelled to it, held to some rule, some standard. It is your will. Your choice.

Perhaps The Seer values that he has a choice, too. Your nature is something handed to you, and if we believe him, for his kind, something that can be taken away.

to add: What Muschio wants has not /changed/ per say, it has only been added to, to want to keep what he has, as well as avenge what was lost

The wheel turned.
Muschio wanted to incarnate the archetype of the villain. An evil man that antagonize those who would be called heroes.

But the thing is, He is the Hero. He carries inside him the blood of kings. He has no rivals, as no man can be his equal in deeds and mission.

He was born to be king, and a king he will be, a true hero among true heroes, a river to his people. The will and the way.

And overlord may know glory in his lifetime, but that's all the time it will last, maybe 'till the third generation at most. Our prince is building a kingdom for the ages, one built in the foundations of justice and prosperity. No scoundrel will ever achieve that.

Our enemies may know our Prince as evil incarnated, as he will bring doom upon them. But
evil is rooted in selfishness and self-adoration, and Muschio instead has a burning heart, that strives to give it's all for those that placed their trust in him.

I don't think that desire has changed, simply some perspective has been gained.

Recall where it came from, the bossman was subjected to a terrible change of situation. a family slain, a throne usurped, a kingdom turned against him.

And by all accounts we've come to see, this was the result of being a line of good people.
Clearly the only response is to become the kind of villain that would neither allow such a slight to occur, and who's wrath is so devastating as to discourage such an attempt in the first place.

But Muschio has proved to be a noble soul in the ways that count. Genuinely respects and cares for the plight of those under his influence.

Good news for everyone involved, the two are not mutually exclusive!
and a good thing too, since 'Do right by your own, and take no shit from anyone else' will win as many enemies as it will friends.

Villain was what they would call him so that is what he chose to be.
But that was just another cage of a different kind.
Hes grown beyond that now.
Without you and the others, i dont think he would have.
Not that youre intentionally changing him by any means.
I dont think you could.
He remains definitively and unapologetically Muschio.
Just one that treasures his companions and recognises how much they drive him to better himself in a way vengence alone could not.

All this time, Muschio has been fighting back against the injustices done to his family and kingdom. That he initially chose to do so from an adversarial position is understandable.

Now, however, he is building up his own base of power and using the very talents he was trained to bear to unite the region and become a contender for the throne. It might still be a long shot, but Muschio is showing himself capable -- more than capable, perhaps, with all his exploits -- of not only fighting back, but besting his predecessors in the process.

Evil, after all, is only what others make of it -- and a term assigned to us by those who overthrew the Malto reign.

Hmn.
You are right about dompag boss.
The only thing against him is his usual wardrobe being a loincloth is pushing what the nobility would consider casual wear.
Maybe invest in something formal for him.

Oh.

Speaking of them, I heard the bugfolk-- oh look at me, I'm all over the place this afternoon. It's that excitement to be here. And in your presence, no less, all these years later!
>As I was saying, you were but a little child. I heard you had quite a temper in your youth, though I mean no disrespect in saying so. It appears you've calmed since, of course! You shine such a true regal demeanor, now.

>Where was I? Ah, the toy, yes. I hoped it would leave a good impression. But you held it only for a moment, and then threw it into the fireplace!

I understand the importance of wariness. I know that I have foes to watch for, even assassins.

But dinner parties and hosting guests -- these are things expected regularly of nobility such as myself.

At the least, wait until we have been given reason to be suspicious. This man has been vouched for by Lady Mondegreen, verified by my own passing questions about her (which you insisted I test!), and warned only as generous and talkative to a fault.

If this is not enough to put me at ease, what will be? Wariness is one thing, but I simply will not survive jumping at every shadow. If I cannot sit calmly through a single dinner with a single puffy, loud old man, then my future rule will be difficult indeed.

These two have not yet given me anything but assurances of trust. I would not trust him with my life, but surely we can save our fears for when we have been given reason, not merely when an old woman helps her companion to some currants.

Pendle, if you knew roughly the focus of Odu Rumux's attention at this point how would you go about verifying it? We have reason to believe Muschio is tied directly to the deity, or something in his bedroom at least. Many hands tore the demon apart when it attacked his mind as he slept.

Take into account everything we've learned so far about this god.
It's the god whom Red Fang thought would be the one to betray him, the god known for protecting the weak and ugly, the one who speaks in hands.
Whether you realize it or not, you've been following this god's ideals for a while now. Killing Red Fang, protecting the Timore Woodlands, and those hands you used- we used -against that demon. The abyss waiting for you within your own mind...
Muschio, Big M, I think this god might be much, much closer to you than you might think.

Or better, hang it so that it's displayed on the ceiling, and you can look up at the art like in a chapel.

More immediately important, though, is the banner itself. The trees remind me of what we saw in your dreams, of what your ancestor saw on the warpath, but besides that, what is up with that striking flourish in the center? It's so vibrant to our eyes, a bright blue that reminds me of your hair, but More.

Odd, almost every one of these strange dreams has something consistent to them.
Invervention, perhaps divine in nature.
A group of goblins stuck in a mine being saved by Baron Malto, perhaps even the followup with finesse is a part of it, she seemed to be talking to an entity called Mojo that we were in the role of. Then there's the dream of Openda being saved from a falling pipe, and now a dream of one of your relative doubting his campaign moments before witnessing god and turning away.
Each one, an act that would make sense for a god such as Odu Rumux. Each one tied back to you and the people you lead.
These visions of yours Muschio, they're divine in nature, and show that this intervention in your quest has gone on since before you were even born.
Perhaps even this can be seen as protecting another one of your subjects. Dompag could have lived there at one point, and would've died in the attack.

As stated, this god has been by your side and mirroring your will for a very long time Malto.

Dompag and Morphyl begin chatting about their respective travels, and of the people and places they've seen.

It turns out Dompag might know one of Morphyl's nieces, but he wisely avoids details on the nature of their familiarity, and our guest doesn't seem to press it.

It appears Finesse, ever thoughtful, had discreetly sent to ask for musicians from among the kobold and goblin workers.
It's a pleasant surprise when they arrive, and music began to fill the hall.

Morphyl asks Ashedel to dance, and ignoring her warning of her sharp step, he manages a few minutes of rather impressive and exotic moves, before politely excusing himself from exhaustion.
Dompag asks Lily Tee to dance, but with an amused smile, courteously declines, saying that's for younger women. He tries to respectfully argue otherwise, but eventually relents.

Here's the playbook: they're going to grill Rabas. Let them. None of them realize the Vault can be magically shapeshifted - and that gives you an opportunity to turn your fortress into a deathtrap.

Make a record of the rooms Rabas has visited. Build new rooms modeled after the old but meant to kill invaders and keep them in storage, along with the prep materials to do a quick swap. When the king barges in, boom.

I don't know but all of this indicates that your former kingdom is dying. We just have to hold out a siege. Let them starve themselves to death. Perhaps the lens used to examine the reign of the late king Malto was tinted slightly rose in the minds of all who've spoken to us about it before, either by comparison to the present or in respect of the man who maybe wished for better yet.
We can't know, sadly, if there were indeed some other factors at play; maybe there was pushback and meddling from nobility or the extant populations of man, perhaps it was a situation in development that the coffers did not yet have the capacity to cover.

but in any case, if he's telling it true then we'll have to be more thorough ourselves.

I wonder if it'd be possible to make contact with and embrace these displaced people. It'd probably be a logistical nightmare, but I think it's a worthy goal to consider.

He seems worldly enough to be aware of the paladin's feelings about portaled monsters, but it might be worth mentioning seeing as they have been in the area and specifically targeting ours recently, a little extra caution never hurts
And in that spirit, we should at least consider what opportunities access to our monster portal could present that might entice a particularly charming and well travelled worldly individual to seek it. He's graciously accepted our paranoia so far so there's no need to insult the man by demonstrating even further suspicion outright, but it does seem a little odd to only bring this up at this late hour, as if hoping it is casually accepted without thought for a reason.

>He tries to be restrained and cordial about these things, but I assure you, he'll be giddy all night. I'll have to make his special soothing tea just to get him to sleep."

"It's nothing compared to the gifts he's brought me. I'll treasure these things he's saved on my behalf."

>"It has been an honor being welcome in your court, your Royal Highness. I hope we may visit you again someday.
>I would be interested to see what this little village looks like in a year's time."

The night is young, but I retire to my chambers all the same. Entertaining in the court asks more energy than I remember.

This is the first time I've ever had to do it myself, rather than just watch my parents carry me along.
The first time in many years I've spent the entire day being called "Prince" and "Your Highness".
The first time in some while a person of such respect has treated me like royalty from start to finish.

It was a good day.
I had missed the goings of the royal court.

Because if they're that stupid then I bet the ogres aren't responsible for every murder on the highway... and the people who did are ordering paladins of justice to cover it up.

Calvario: This is wrong, and you know it.
You did not declare war.
You did not demand terms.
You did not even bother to talk to them.
And now your men are gleefully shoving artillery rounds into their faces.
This is not war. This is slaughter.
Someone, somewhere, is laughing at how easy you all are. The ogres are going to be blamed for things they didn't do. Which means whoever did all those murders is going to enjoy getting away with them.

Stop your men. Now. Before you damn yourselves in the name of God.
Like countless others before you.
If you can't hear god, then don't rape in his name.

Calvario, you know this is wrong. You can give the order to stop. Your men do this in darkness because you don't want the sun to see, to do this in the name of God isn't just wrong, it is blasphemous. If god wouldn't forgive this, if you wouldn't forgive this, then call off the attack. Give the order. If you're men are loyal, they will follow.

The explosion was a natural expression of Classic, Euclidian physics.

The spontaneous, otherworldly fire that started it could not be.

It took both at once to rapture the zealots.
