They were a race of frog monsters who released a plague that wiped out 60% of all sentient beings. In retaliation the Empire of Tamriel sent their entire fleet backed by hundreds of battlemages to raze their island nation, then literally drop it into the sea. They survived, being amphibians, but their civilization suffered greatly. Also, they have the Internet, among other technologies.

Hm, it's a tough one. Especially since I can't really rationalise what I'm seeing in the image. You said 'swamp' on dA, so I therefore assume the convolution is intentional. It's not a bad thing, though. It just makes it more difficult to describe elements, I suppose.

The part that sticks out to me as being 'the worst,' is that little hill-type thing at the bottom. The issue is that it seemingly has the greatest range in values, whereas the much more carefully detailed background seems to, in most areas, stick to darker values, and therefore I seem subconsciously less interested by it.

The problem with this is that it really draws my eye, and I feel like, once there, my eye doesn't have a lot to look at -- especially when it's juxtaposed upon such a finely detailed background. The biggest 'branch' towards the left of the hill, is especially noticeable. It just juts out rather crudely, and the fact that it almost has this 'black outline' of shadow just highlights it further. The entire hill does not appear to be as carefully rendered as the rest of the image, and that's a shame, because the background is really nice.

Those black things on the hill: are the creatures, or just more details? They also draw my eye, but I do not know what to make of them. They do not make much sense as anything other than characters placed into the landscape, but they are difficult to make out. Therefore, I can't say they look as though they belong in the image, either.

That's about all I really notice right away. Otherwise, it's quite impressive.

I really have no idea how to go from a rough painting to something approaching polish.

This painting is siting at about an hour and a half of work. There is quite a bit more lighting to be added, and some semblance of a background, but past that I'm lost. What makes a piece "finished?"
>>
No. 18852 ID: 5a4084
For me, it's just the time dedicated to smoothing everything out, adding the fine details, and having the patience to not throw it in. I heard this expression, I do not know the exact words, but it is something like, 'a painting is never complete, but instead abandoned.'

For the artwork you linked, it would be a matter of defining the forms, refining the lighting, and basically, just sticking to it. I've often agonised over my works, thinking 'how do I do it,' but every time, the answer simply has been to work on it for longer.

Doodle Time thread.

Doodle time is basically just an exercise to try and force people like me to get back into the habit of regularly drawing again. Just draw for at least a half an hour every night (I guess you can take a break on weekends or something). Anyone participating, feel free to post their doodle time sketches here.

It doesn't really matter what you draw, and there's no obligation to share what you're doodling. Sometimes there are arbitrary themes. This one was "Bee stings" apparently...

I'm pretty sure Penji Tozzle is immune to bee stings, which are a type of magic I assume.

Thanks for the words, apreciate both the advise and the encouragement.

I looked up that loomis thing you told me about and im not sure if you mean Andrew loomis? As in his books? Or did you mean something else?

This took way longer than it should have. Wanted to practice a bit on backgrounds and a bit of perspective.

Possible scene from a to be named quest though seeing as how that would be done on the computer it's kind of a moot point

Hands are a bit harder than I thought they would be.

hands are the devil. they will take an immense amount of practice. very fiddly, very annoying.

He most likely meant andrew loomis, yes. Here's one of the first results I got for pdfs of all his books:

I've been busy as all Hell lately, but now seems to be an appropriate time to finally get a new drawthread going.

Here's some stuff on which I have been working. I'm constantly battling that part of myself that says 'I can't be bothered going on with this one,' so it doesn't look good for this artwork.

It's like someone tried a different artstyle to fix Liefeld's bullshit and ended up doing the very fucking same mistakes

>>6368
Didn't he fucking invent Cable?

By the way, if you want an actual "fixed" 90s x-treme anti hero, there's Magog (at least in his early appearances, I'm not sure his own series is very decent). Say whatever you want about Alex Ross being a bad person and his comics lacking vividness, but he fucking managed to make something cool out of the retarded Liefeld character design protocol. Pic related

also, those guns only have one barrel, he almost always draws them with two. i am pretty sure this is just made by a Cable fan.

I fell in love with the Cable from the television series. Although he appeared in only about 10 episodes or something. His design was pretty god damned awesome compared to the ever constantly shifting design in the comics and series. All of them approved by Liefeld.

I haven't seen the X-men series, so I can't tell about him as a character, as a person.
But all I can say about his design is that it looks like the action-man version of the typical teenage DA-user Mary Sue: take a lot of potentially cool elements (scars over one eye, bionic arm, white hair, massive pauldron, paramilitary accessories, glowing eye, psychic powers; let's not even talk about his backstory) and just toss them up grossly into one character. Cable is a heterogenous patchwork (pleonasm to stress my point) of character ideas.

If the writers managed to make it somehow work, then fine, but it still looks off.
Also, notice how most recent artists who have a take at him usually try to make him look more consistent by emphasizing the "tacticool" aspect of his appearance so that the rest can fit in.

EXACTLY. Cable in the animated series wasn't all that Sue at all. He kicked ass as much as he could till he got his ass handed back to him by many characters.

Worf syndrome basically.
