One time, I tried to eat the metal that they use for arrows, and it didn't taste good. The only reason why I did it was because Bobbie told me not to do it. I couldn't chew it, so I put many of them in my mouth to make metal jaws. The day after that, I was suffering from metal poisoning. So I stopped messing around with them.

It would take too long to completely go over, so I'll instead tell you how the universe is going to end. (This is apparently interesting to aliens.)

Our planet is named 'ʒe' which translates to egg. 'Sonʒe' directly translates to 'Outside of an egg' and 'Sanʒe' translates to 'inside of an egg.' Now, ʒe has multiple layers of caves, too many to count, and Sanʒe only inhabit the top layer of caves. In the second layer of caves, there are lesane, below that, alesane, bolesane, jelesane, etc. And each layer down, the creatures become more...

There isn't really an english word for it, but it would directly translate as 'towards the center of an egg.'

Anyway, at the center of ʒe, there is a single creature called Kxtluath. ʒe is Kxtluath's egg. I've heard that aliens believe the universe will end in a "heat death" but that seems made up. Why would the universe stop existing because it gets cold? Aliens are stupid.

I didn't, really. It belongs to my aunt Sol'try. She got the hairs herself, for helping a wolf escape human hunters. She's an amazing hunter, knows the forest for miles around. But, she hurt her leg, so she couldn't go for help.

She gave the cloak to me because she knows I'll do whatever it takes to return it to her.

In the stories, the witch doubled each animal's life years. I don't know how much that would be for rats, but supposedly the nests that keep records do know that each generation is living longer than the last. My parents' generation are in their thirties, and old Forti is pushing fifty. Heh, he says if he had been named Fiftytude he would probably live to be a hundred.

Not a lot, scientifically speaking. My family moved to Prague two generations ago, so I hadn't even seen one until I came here. They only are found in this forest, you know.

They are a highly mutative form of fungus, able to ambulate and display rudimentary behaviors. I haven't given one a full dissection, but they seem to have only very simple internal structures. They move slow, are packed with nutrients, and taste quite nice cooked. Even with the frequent nasty surprises some are born with, they should have died out ages ago.

Which is the real mystery. To my knowledge no one has every seen one breed, seed, spore, or mitose. You just find them chewing on old wood or cloth. Spontaneous Generation has been disproven in nature, except I don't think the humans know about fungos.

I like them with onions.

Despite my flaws I was chosen not only to rise into the Preceptory but to be the next link in the chain of Silver. I'm too far behind in my education to consider myself stuck at home when half the knowledge of the Basin is at my fingertips.

Besides, leaving the library would be pointless. Half of what the Nyk- Martinets say still goes over my head even if I recognize the words they say. 'Accents' have been a... difficulty.
