It has been a long and difficult journey. Many of Kata22ti's friends have fallen along the way. Many things have taken their toll on her sanity along the way. But overall, she feels she's the same kulukuzu who set off on this journey as she started.

And she's finally reached the end of this journey. Central Network's core system node is directly in front of her. Undefended. Helpless. She's past the point of needing a physical connection. She has enough technology in her to destroy Central Network with a simple thought.

No. Stop. Don't do this, Kata. You don't know how much damage you'll do to this entire facility if you destroy me. If I go down, your species will die out without me there to create more drones, and who's going to fill the power vacuum created by my absence?! You?! Either Prime gets absolute power, or, even worse, the gekeh constructs take advantage of the chaos to conquer you all! THINK ABOUT THIS, KATA!!

Ignore what's in front of you, instead be on guard for a trap. This is too easy.

What's that? Fill a power vacuum? Sounds like fun.

Whoha, we have been sleeping for a long time, Just do it, kill him now, think of all your friends dead because of him and do it!
>>

Hmm. Really? Killing him will fuck up the system? Okay, let's just selectively damage bits of him so that he can no longer think, but we can control the system through his compromised bits.

Lobotomize him. Or just take him over! That would work too.

...ake up...

...

Wake up, Kata!

You're going to be late for the first day of school!

In that case, let's reprogram him to be a peaceful happy guy who loves everybody and wants the best for everybody, especially the kulukuzu, but is still powerful and can maintain control over the facility and maintain a defense against his enemies, or better yet, make peace.

Alternatively, promote Subsystem TG-CN to the position of primary consciousness!

Actually, this is the best solution.

"Think about this? Done."

With a thought, Kata ends Central Network.

Then the world goes black.

System fault - variable "FACTION_LEADER_1" set to null!

"...really. Really."

A crackle. A disembodied nasal voice echoes. "Sorry about that! I seriously never expected you guys to actually get this far to the end! I tried to hint at it as much as I could, but, you know, I didn't want to break the immersion"
"This black empty nothingness is really ruining the whole 'immersion' thing for me anyway."
"You know, I think that counts as a win. I'll put your team's names into the book anyway, because technically you would have won anyway. You had good enough diplomatic relationships with the other factions, you could have probably turned the complex into a utopia or something."

"Thank you for playing 'Defective', a Virtual Vistas production!"
"Damn right it's defective... That session was really fun up until that point! I don't think I can face playing through the entire thing again all the way to the final CN confrontation. I guess could try speed-running the missions or something, I dunno. Damn. I was hoping I'd get the achievement for facing CN massively over-levelled, too!"

Kata continues ranting as the others in her gaming group slowly trickle out into the foyer, Tene gently guiding her out of the room as he she continues rambling. They walk over to Seto and Rito, both discussing the events of the session.

"...and then I got swarmed by monitors in the end. Still think they're massively overpowered. I mean, sure, the story kind of supports them being so overpowered, but. Anti-monitor stuff should pop up more, I think."
"Or you could just join them. Worked for me."
"Eh, I dunno. I don't think the monitor faction had a lot of depth to it. Network Prime's faction just had more going for it. They wanted the complex to have a future. What did the monitors want, anyway?"
"Well, you only get to find out if you join them. But yeah, I think we can count Defective as being over, so here's the full story..."

The group talks more and disbands after arranging the next meetup, and Kata and Tene walk home.

"So, what now?"
"I was going to go post an update to my story on Journeys because I had a great idea for it during that session. But, well, that can wait, and, uh. I dunno. What do you want to do now?"
"I have no idea. I'm kind of out of it right now, to be honest."

It is a particularly awkward walk home today, for some reason. Kata tries to think of conversation topics and fails miserably.

What should she talk about with Tene?

Nothing. You're under the effects of a Despair Squid. Or, uh, Central's version of it, whatever. Snap out of it.

Totally lose touch with reality and the concept of what is real and what isn't.
