Don't get me wrong, I wasn't complaining about this update. The update itself was great. I'd go as far as to say that it looks professional to the point that it could be mistaken for a real game, so all of you did an awesome job. I'm sorry to hear about your hand. I hope it wasn't anything serious and that you fully recovered.

It's come to my attention that the 'dick chicken' segment might have come off as creepy to some. I wish to apologize if this is the case, as DR tries pretty hard not to delve into creep territory if it can help it.

I think I, and my proofreaders, got a little too caught up in 'Hot Mom' to take a purely objective look at the situation, especially with me updating while very tired as is often the case.

I also backed myself into a corner, my fatigue and 'just get it done I'm so tired of doing this' mentality caused me to forget for a moment that I don't actually like or want incest to be a thing that is possible.

I'll try to be better about making the 'is this creepy tho' check in the future. Sorry again.

I didn't take a proper break during the year-end break, using that time to work on improving draw-speed without the insane accuracy loss, and designing things that'll come up in the future.

I'm running on empty, to the point that DR6 might get a second hiatus where I actually take a real break and do nothing questy for a week or so.

I want to at least get to the Daatra scene first, which may just be thread-end depending on the pacing... depends on if I accomplish 6's main goal by then!

if a slinkoquest dies properly, it means something went very very wrong.

I mean, things went very wrong and I touched the graveyard but then they were revived and the threads ended, so we definitely need 2 'very's before I sacrifice my 100% completion ratio.

BUT YES I WILL TAKE A BREAK AFTER DAATRA. I know I'm running on fumes, and there may be occasional delays as I give myself moments to catch my breath, but we'll get there as we always have.

And then I will rest, for real.

I'm going to do 1 more update, which will reach a decent point to pause, and then pause for a week to rest.

This might sound insanely short, but it's enough to get me to Daatra, after which I will pause for a good amount of time and make sure I 100% rest I promise.

Hello!

For posterity, I figured I'd type out how the secondary voting system works (though it's probably obvious by now). It's based on a real voting system but I don't know what it's called (runoff voting?).

In normal voting mode, folks get two votes: Primary and Secondary.

The votes are collected, and a script runs them through a series of runoff votes. The option with the fewest votes is dropped, and everyone who voted for it gets their secondary votes added to the other options. If a tie for worst, the letter later in the alphabet is dropped first (G, then E, etc).

Meaning if you vote A/b, and A loses, you give B another vote for the next round.

in the next round, maybe your B vote pushes it ahead, and C loses instead. Well, C's secondaries get added and it continues.

In a couple cases now, the most popular PRIMARY option has actually lost to a more popular SECONDARY option! You might not always get exactly what you wanted most, but there's now a higher chance you'll at least get something you're okay with, which didn't really happen under the old system.

The PATH system further divides things so that a group of choices that all do one overarching idea are put together. This helps cut down on the issue I'd have in the past where people want ceri to do X, but because they couldn't come together on what flavor of X she did, she would often do Y because Y had only 1 good choice, or something like that.

There's almost always two paths max, it's chosen by where your PRIMARY VOTE lies. It's a 'first past the post' system, but there's usually only two choices anyway so this is fine. There may be occasional times where there's no good way to have fewer than 3 paths, but in general the number of paths is kept to a minimum.

If your PATH loses, your secondary choice is considered. If both choices are in the losing path, they are dropped. It's a good idea to put your secondary vote in the other path, either as damage control or as 'well if we're doing that ANYWAY we might as well do this flavor of that'. It's a pretty big gamble to put both choices in one path, but there may be times when you're so sure the path will win that you want to chime in for your two favorite choices on that path.

As you may have noticed, the 'vote x' system is often 'vote as many as you want' now. While on the surface it sounds like we lose some of the hard choices the limited votes brought, in practice it's kept by limiting how many choices can win (though it's often more than one).

This adds value in voting for fewer things (voting for every option makes nothing change), but gives you the choice to prop many options you like instead of one option you love.

The mechanics were a double pain to do manually and the script was a real life saver, but for you it's pretty simple.

NORMAL: choose your favorite then your second favorite (possibly in the other path if paths exist)

CHOOSE AS MANY AS YOU WANT: vote for either your favorite option(s), or many options you like over ones you don't

Turns out the key was letting people vote more than once.

Pretty much all music you'll hear nowadays is either pure typo or something we worked together on.

The first song in the current update was pure typo, with the second song being a hybrid baby.

For fun, a quick rundown:

Tezakia: pure slinko, obviously
Creator (Penultimate animation): pure slinko
Creator (final animation): multiple songs that are pure slinko or pure typo
Slissa quest (early flash): Co-op
Slissa quest (second flash): Co-op (99% typo)
DR (Dream Segment: Forgotten memory): pure slinko
DR (Dream Segment: Dragon child): Co-op but (90% slinko). This is DR's secondary theme.
DR (Dream Segment: Ceri awakens): Typo making a song from a slinko theme
DR (Dream Segment: A new day) Typo song built from a slinko theme and expanded. This is DR's main theme.
DR (Mallventure 2: Poor Tie choices): 100% Typo
DR (Mallventure 2: is this iiji again): co-op (roughly 50/50 split)
DR (????): Pure typo... Oh wait, this hasn't happened yet.
DR (????): Co-op (80% slinko). One day you can come back here and know what this song is!

>wah we didn't choose the "good" option for one interaction
Ceri had no way of knowing it would turn out that way, and it certainly isn't that cut and dry. It started out as hostile, then wound up finding a deeper personal issue rather than serving the customer's needs like a sales person is fucking supposed to do.
>>
No. 121350 ID: 395c02

>>121348
I will note that in every single minigame choice, one choice won over the other by a landslide. 'cool' is the first time in DR history that we had a unanimous win, with 0 people choosing the other option.

The only vote that was close was 'tie' vs 'no tie', with 'no tie' winning by roughly 30% (the original vote data was cleared when the new update went up, so I'm going from memory).

True but we also had no way of knowing that being truthful wouldn't end with red lizard going off at us or that or that bird girl wouldn't just straight refuse tits and leave.
I'm pretty confident in saying that the outcomes of the choices affected peoples decisions as much as whether or not Ceri would know or what she would do. If it were another quest I would agree but DR has meta out the ass.

And yes sales persons are supposed to sell as much shit as possible but A Ceri is not a GameStop employee and B she has proclaimed that she will HELP as many people as possible, sacrificing one sale to help someone is something that she would do. For all we now we just ruined that dudes relationship and then Ceri will feel guilty and want to fix it and then sub/side plot/story/mission.
Or he could be fine and and she'll come by the shop herself at some point OR we never hear nor see him ever again, that all remains to be seen.
>>
No. 121363 ID: b1b4f3

>>121357
No, salespeople are supposed to sell the customer what they want, not push sales onto them like a shitty Gamestop clerk. We didn't push a sale onto him by not calling him out on it, and calling him out on it certainly wasn't helping, in-character. There is SOME meta stuff going on, particularly in this update, but cmon man just because starting an argument wound up with a good result doesn't mean starting the argument was the correct choice!
We would've pushed a sale onto the bird by suggesting boobs.

Telling the truth and confronting awkwardness instead of avoiding it is a completely different thing. Even if it hadn't resulted in more sales I would've picked that, since I knew it would turn out okay.

And now, I rest...

I really pushed myself to the absolute limit doing thread 6, especially near the end.

But thread 6 (barely) accomplished its main goals: Do better than 5, and introduce the patreon characters. It even gave a cameo to a brand new patreon character despite the mad dash to get everything done before I die!

(it's the purple tiny lizard in the minigame)

Because there's a new patreon character and someone considering joining (maxing out how many there can be), I'm still not in a great place to pause DR to do the for-free quests I'd otherwise do.

But I also don't like the idea of literally never doing Slissa or Retcon because DR pays the bills.

I'm going to rest for 3 weeks and think on this. Right now, I'm exhausted...

Dylan insists they shouldn't have any notable impact, and when I used ublock under his direction to prevent them from loading the thread was still painful to navigate on my older laptop (even the new laptop goes 'i dunno about this')

I'm not sure if the minigames just ninja'd my cpu even while disabled or what, since 6 is slower to scroll than 5 was and both threads have a similar amount of total posts. 5 also has a minigame of its own.

It could be the large thread size, the higher amount of total images (270, vs ~220 for previous threads), and whatever impact the minigames have all working together to bring death to desktops (phones seem fine).

If the minigames have as little impact as dylan says the test shows, then we should probably add 'don't go over 220 or so images a thread' to the list of things we tell new authors.

But yeah. Me being tired wasn't the only reason I stopped the thread where I did.

To be clear, the thread 5 minigame might lag because it has no loading screen (this will be fixed later) but the ones in thread 6 really shouldn't. Browsers do love being awful though.

If you're pretty sure it's the minigame I can make it not even load until clicked, but what makes you think that? Would it help if I made two versions of the thread to compare?

Ok, so...

As some know, my break had very little actual break happen, due to IRL shenanigans and other things going on.

I'm woefully behind on patreon, and neither quest is in a great place to go up.

I'm going to leave the date up in the air for now. When I do start the quests, there will be so much slinkoquest happening all at once. But I simply can't do it until patreon is caught up and other things are in place. The threads would suffer immensely if I tried to force any start date.

Most of the IRL shenanigans ruining the break are dealt with now, meaning I finally have a moment to breath, steel myself, and get to work.

I'll keep you posted on my progress.

also Slinko, I think it might be worth doing some css trickery for the thought bubbles, they look really nice as it is, but if you got yourself or Dylan to make some css to change the text to a white background and have borders on the top and bottom to make it fit in with the thought bubbles, it would look pretty nice, and is pretty easy to code too.

Me: I'm going to update so many quests! All the updates!

Lifelong Chronic depression: Hey

Me: Oh. Right.

Rather than try to set a schedule, I think I'll yield to depression and not burning out and say DR will update every other day (taking an extra day off occasionally), typoquest when I can make myself do it, and SQ when I can make myself do it and no other quest is in need of updating

SQ is going to update extremely slowly until my depression wanes, with DR being top priority because it pays the bills.

Also: DR, wherein a person bad at suggesting has to make 3+ suggestions for his own quest as options.

SQ is not using DR's voting style... it's something a little different. It will do what is essentially PATH votes, with the details being left to freeform where possible. hopefully this will allow more freedom while also making 20+ suggestions manageable.

that vote's going down as NULL.

You have to actually pick a main choice and a secondary choice (Or come up with a CUSTOM OPTION), not just tell Ceri to try everything until something works.

Dragon Romance

Aside from anything the alien crew have/had, does this world have firearms?
With all of the dangerous adventuring we plan on doing later (checking out those hotspots), we should probably learn how to use a weapon of some sort. I suggest an assault rifle for versatility, although if that doesn't exist, I would then suggest (going further back in history respectively) a semi-auto hunting rifle, a bolt-rifle, a crossbow, and lastly a bow. Ranged weapons are much more versatile allowing you to use them for hunting as well as fighting.
>>
No. 123606 ID: 4ecc08

The tech level is high enough for there to be firearms, but the presence of magic may have stunted any sort of weapon development. There's no great need for guns when you can spike people in the forehead with spears of ice.

What you are saying makes sense, which is why I included a few suggestions. I actually remembered that Ceri's dad has a small army's worth of Lethal Weapons in a gun safe.

Regarding the use of magic, it is for precisely that reason that Ceri should learn conventional combat/survival. iirc, while magic is prevalent, it is rare for people to know more than a small handful of spells. If Ceri wants to avoid attracting unwanted attention while traveling, she should avoid using magic unnecessarily.

oh um

I guess I radio silenced a bit there. long story short: things aren't ideal, but will soon be much more ideal.

DR/SQ
----

I've been working on what will be the last cutscene/minigame we'll be seeing for a while, at least the last 'intended' one. I've been making these a lot lately, and I'm definitely at the point where I'd like to go back to normal quest mode for a while :X

This means things might not update for a little bit longer, but soon the updates will flow again like wine and bird juice!

Yu and Typo-related things
----

To help Typo regain his questing mojo, I'm eventually going to be reviving and running Koror with Typo playing support instead of sole writer. He's also having a 'RL situation is not ideal' ...situation, which will also be resolving soon.

So I'm hoping that doing this with Koror will help him get back in the game!

Sadly, this does mean Yu might be sleeping for a while, but in the long run I think there will be some good stuff to look forward to.

But Koror isn't reviving for a little while. It's a month or more out.

I definitely need to be in a better RL situation first, as right now I can barely handle doing DR and SQ (and if I'm being honest SQ maybe started sooner than it should have, since it really needs me firing on all cylinders and I haven't been for months).

Patreon
----
Between the next big scene going up and things returning to a normal quest normal schedule, I'll be taking a week to try and close the Patreon gap that was worsened by my deteriorating mental state. By this point, the RL stuff should be way better, meaning I'll be way better, meaning I can finally do thing.

Ceri's dad is shown to be the owner of several firearms. Ceri isn't likely to use them, because I don't like drawing them and people take them way too seriously.

You really have to write a different type of story to handle guns, since they tend to 1-shot everything. In general, guns require quests to have Combat Strategy, and this is an area I'm very weak in.

That said, there is a plot blob that might do something with Sheriim's DEADLY WEAPONS, but who can say if I'll ever find time with the many many other things DR has to do.

All things must end, but... who knows?

Tezakia 2 is the last 'planned' quest in the uh... slinko cinematic universe? hmm.

it's the last one that's been 'planned' since 2010, is what I mean. Once tezakia is done, I'm out of things I was planning to do, and... who knows? Maybe I'll find new stories to tell with what I've built, or I'll be inspired to build new worlds.

Just finished reading all of the Tezakia Quest and all of the smaller sequels few days ago.
I don't normally read interactive fiction that much. The only other major one, that I read before this is the Prequel (A.K.A. Making A Cat Cry: The Adventure).
But I gotta say, it's been a blast reading through the chapters.
Currently reading the Venji Quest, though would love to see Tezakia 2 come into fruition someday.

I also have couple of questions:

Are you still updating the character ask blog on the Tumblr?

Also (This might be a wrong place to ask), is there more info about Only Peep? I've read about it essentially being Only War, but converted into Tezakiaverse.
The descriptions on Trout's pictures about it only made me more curious. Is there a campaign log or something, considering this is a tabletop game?

>Are you still updating the character ask blog on the Tumblr?
The ask blog is likely dead, due to being busy with other things and also Tumblr made some changes I don't like.

I might actually try to answer questions asked in the Inside The Quest thread on tgchan, though.

>Also (This might be a wrong place to ask), is there more info about Only Peep?
If there is a log, I'm afraid I don't have it. Only Peep was a campaign that ran in a modified version of the tezakia world. From what I understand, there was a lot of shooting and bird sex.

Previously you said that you want to stay away from combat since you dont think you are very good at it. Lago seems to do it pretty well, and since you are both (TGChan) celebrities you might be able to ask them for advice in that area.
I personally think that DR should have some more conflict once Dr. Snek comes back w/ the dragon. Dragon riders could show up, the main chars could investigate the energy spikes or try to save the prince, or something else might happen.
Guns (in addition to bows, melee weapons, and possibly alien weaponry :3) should probably make an appearance since they have already been shown to exist, however with the presence of magic, advanced alien technomancy, literal metal-headed adversaries, and plot armor, guns dont necessarily have to be one shot one kill.

Not him but the tl;dr is that during a certain quest milk became a joke and then people beat the horse into a corpse and then the corpse into its component molecules. It went a fair bit beyond what Slinko was comfortable with. It's not a particularly cool or fun story.

C-celebrities??

DR is combat-light as heck, but does intend to have some in places. I might seek lago's council, but part of it is you need to actually draw backgrounds for people to hide and strategize around, and drawing BGs is raw unrefined suffering.

I don't like drawing guns, and people get way too serious about guns, so it's unlikely they will ever play a major part in any of my quests. Amiel's DEADLY WEAPON was played a bit tongue-in-cheek, and that was before I spent time around gun-fanatics.

Well, if you have a laptop, you could probably go to a fast food joint and use their free outlets and wi-fi.

Regarding backgrounds, you could probably get away with recycling backgrounds or just using very simple ones. Alternatively, you could draw a bunch of assets(like trees, rocks, buildings, etc.) and save them without a background and then use them to quickly paste together a background.

As far as the workload goes, you could probably just ask and i'd wager that people would be more than happy to donate (matching) sprites. You could also just make sprites as you need them (i mean if you have to draw the tree anyway, might as well) or go back and take the raw files from your past frames and turn parts of those into sprites.

>btw, the weight difference from >>895789 to >>895790 is pretty extreme. I am not saying either are bad, but you might want to try to keep them a bit more consistent. Ofc i cant draw for shit, so i suppose i dont really have room to judge.

I find a lot of critiques I get are things I already know, when they're not just 'try being less bad'. Especially for quest images, I prioritize the images existing over the images being perfect. Slissa Quest is a slight exception, but even it has a 'okay I've spent 3 hours on 1 image let's call it good enough' point.

I recently figured out a new way to draw stomachs that lets Ceri look actually chubby instead of 'thin girl but there's a stomach sometimes'.

Problem is, it's a complete departure from how I was drawing tummies before, meaning I need practice to get used to it and to be able to be more consistent. Until I get it down better, she'll sometimes look too fat or too skinny.

She didn't actually gain like 50 pounds, I'm just using the quest as practice to get to where she looks 'a bit chubby' using the new method, something even harder to do at quest-art speed. The included image shows roughly where the 'intended' level of chub is.

Dilia, on the other hand . . .

Speaking of drawing, i have been wanting to learn how to draw. In the past, when i tried, i could never find a decent guide. Most said to just practice, but they conveniently forget to mention what to practice and how to practice it. The best i could find was simple exercises with circles and such, and while that is great, there is a pretty huge and overwhelming gap from drawing circles and squares more-or-less consistently to drawing people, landscapes, and things.

How did you learn?

Many years ago, drew crude comics of Sonic, a popular thing to draw comics of when you're a teenager.

I started wanting to learn how to draw properly, which was spear-headed when I found an artist who drew well enough to look nice, but simply enough that I could just barely understand how their lines came together to form a picture.

I spent a while just drawing pieces of their style, trying to understand it. They mostly drew dragons, so I'd mimic their claws. Their legs. Their other set of legs. Piece by piece.

I didn't do this for months or anything, it was a single afternoon spent on this. Eventually, I took what I was practicing and used it to draw dragon 1, seen in this image.

Now, at this point most art tutorials were useless to me because they are obsessed with circles and I have a hard time thinking of things in shapes (which is why some of the 'just get it out' DR updates look pretty 2D, as do older images of mine).

After dragon one, I would continue to spend time practicing bits and pieces of that artist's various drawings, making more dragons as part of the Dragon Project. Around the time of dragon 15, I expanded out to looking at what tutorials I could understand and practicing pieces of things other artists have drawn.

I ended up skipping over the 'basics' of drawing, instead practicing and memorizing how to make an image through guesswork alone, and knowing roughly which line connects to which and how.

Because of my struggle with understanding 3D space, a lot of my stuff was either from the side, or facing the viewer. It was actually a challenge for me to upgrade to the 'default angle' every artist knows, 3/4.

Around dragon 33 I fell into an art slump that would last from 2001 to 2009 when tezakia happened. So I'd advice skipping this step.

Tezakia and the quests that followed gave me an insane amount of practice, much more than the previous 10 years.

Around 2012 I decided to start trying to learn anatomy by studying various naked ladies in various naked poses. I gained an obsession with drawing breasts, partly for obvious reasons but largely because of the insane challenge they represented-- many artists well above me in skill struggle to make them look remotely real or natural.

In december of 2017, I would once again look at proper art tutorials and understand, if only barely, the Shapes Method (drawing rough shapes to get an idea of how the pose will look and where things go in relation to each other), finally enabling me to draw things in a slightly more 'standard' way with slightly less guesswork.

Still a lot of guesswork though.

And that's why people always say 'practice a bunch'. At the end of the day, there really isn't a tutorial that magically makes you draw good. There's a lot of required intuition that only comes through practice and studying how things work in real life and slowly but surely understanding what line you need to draw where to achieve the results you desire. It's a never-ending process, but one full of little eureka moments where you can look back upon where you were, where you stand now, and feel a hint of pride.

All patreon characters have officially shown up in DR!

There are no additional slots for new people to take, either.

This should lead to a somewhat smoother story flow from here on, as the focus is no longer on getting everyone in, but in making a narrative everyone can be a part of.

A lot of the pressures plaguing me since mallventure (itself originally a segment to introduce a patreon character whose owner pulled out last-minute) are finally gone.

DR is unlikely to open itself to new people again, especially as the period of my life where every dime counted is moving behind me.

For better or worse, it's time to focus on the story itself now.

I just thought of something: What is Ceri’s family’s last name?

We know their first names, Myra (Mom), Sheriim (Dad), and Ceridwen, but I don’t think we’ve ever been told what their last name is.

One was never decided. At one point I went back to thread 1, intending to be cute and use the second-place winner of the 'what do we name this dragon girl' vote... only to realize 'Ceridwen' was kind of the only real name anyone came up with. oops.

Rather than come up with one myself, this could be an opportunity to have a faux quest decision while I recover a bit:

Gimme some last names for our dragon family!

Mercia - Compassion or forbearance, which could relate the names, albeit maybe a little simple
Ester - Capable, performing large tasks with success
Fernande - Adventuresome
Blithe - Happy, wanting to live life without tradition

Some that're kinda neat from sound: Escanes, Viera

My naming sense is probably not the best, but here's some ideas maybe who knows

Guys remember this is her parents' family name. So it's either Myra or Sherim's original last name. Unless they're SUPER rebellious and came up with a brand new one when they eloped I guess? Regardless it should be something that suits them first and foremost.
Though I guess I don't know much about their races' naming conventions.

Ok, so, this is sort of goofy but I think it works: Merriden.

Originally "Merryden", which is the sort of surname a little hobbitlike furry in a silly fantasy story would have, but this is a silly fantasy story and why not some happy lizards? It would be originally Myra's name, taken by Sheriim when they married. It implies a story, like that when the pressure was on and he suddenly had to think of a name while distracted he went uh uuhm names what's a name uhh and not being able to jump very far at a moment's notice his brain just went to a name that rhymed with his wife's name. Ceridwen.

So she'd be Ceridwen Merriden, daughter of Myra Merriden and Sheriim Merriden. It's cute and would make it hard for people to take her seriously (perhaps explaining why it hasn't been used up until now) but that in itself would suit her pretty well!

So! DR7 is done! After the struggles in 5, and figuring out where I want things to go in 6, I think 7 is when I get my stride back.

I have high hopes for 8, because we no longer have to introduce new patreon characters. We can take everything we have and build on them to make the best story I'm capable of telling which hopefully people will find okay oh no who put this spaghetti here.

Anyway, someone wanted to see the stat screen, so here??

Oh right, future plans.

I got extremely burned out near the end, and I don't think a normal 1-2 week break is gonna cut it. I need a big, proper break from things to recharge.

I'm not giving a hard date for DR thread 8, as it's better to do it when I feel ready rather than force myself to do it at X time. But I do know I need at least a month away from our blue-ish dragon-ish hero.

So the plan for now is I'm going to rest until NOVEMBER 12th. On that day, I'll determine how I'm feeling and if I need more time or if I'm ready to go. I'm going to say now that the odds are decently good that I will need more than a month. The burnout is very strong.

I'm not going to vanish completely, however, as I hope to spend the time doing SQ updates. But I'm not doing anything for a couple weeks at the least. SQ will be kept at a slow pace, as resting and other art obligations are my priority right now.

SQ is gonna be on a low stress setup (whereas DR kept shooting for 3 a week even if it was failing a lot near the end). I'll do it on my own pace, and if I don't feel like it for a bit I'll just not.

I already wrote an update though-- I think I might be less burned out on questing in general and just a bit burned out on DR itself. It didn't help that I felt pressured to continue doing DR at all costs, something I hope can be fixed going forward by just offering bonuses to patreon people on the 'off months'

But yeah. A lot of my time has been spent chilling and sorta regaining my artistic mojo. I'm already feeling myself bounce back a bit, so I'm hopeful!

Some bad news.

Due to insurance shenanigans, I'm without a certain fog-clearing pill until December 03 (...and there's a bit of 'fingers crossed' on me getting pills at that point).

With an addled mind, my ability to be productive has dropped dramatically, and since DR8 has some Things planned, I can't quite say what the overall delay will end up being.

Due to all this, I'll be reducing my normal year-end break to just a few days around X-mas, since I don't exactly need a big ol break at this point. Once DR8 begins, it'll run with minimal interruption for a good while.

Certainly not feeling burned out anymore, at any rate. Just need my brain to turn back on...

Yeah, i did my own sleuthing and discovered it. It is about what i expected.

Found out where Chei came from (and i assume ketzas came from slissa quest...?).

I feel like there is a need for some more backstory on the DR aliens since they seem kinda 2D at the moment; especially since they were created prior to DR. Tbh, most of Slinko's characters were pretty 2D until relatively recently. Imo it is because the quests get bogged down by tangents that keep the story from moving forward. The characters just haven't done enough to get fleshed out.

Maybe it is just me, but it just doesn't feel like we have really gone anywhere. There has been backstory about conflict and battles and dragon politics and then we find out the prince (prince of what? and why does that matter?) has been taken by a dragon. With all these dark undertones, it seems to want to build up towards a fairly big shift from its slice of life feel (not that that should go away cuz i like that too) towards a drama sort of like Asteroid Quest (the drama part, not necessarily the setting or characters. Comparing cuz it seems to have a good story balance), but instead it is just kind of sitting here stagnating, stretching out a few days much longer than they should be.

I do love DR, I just think that while it is currently great, with the amount of potential it has, it could be Legendary.

inb4 i get mobbed: I am not trying to criticize anyone, i am just expressing my views. Slinko is absolutely amazing and i will keep reading regardless of what is decided (if anything).

Now that everyone's in (and the Daatra stuff is effectively done), things should improve in that regard. The aliens were added awkwardly, something I'd have to reboot the quest to fix, really. But I learned some important lessons from that and I'm going to do my best to make it all work.

I can't promise it'll be 100% perfect because quests are flawed by nature (they're essentially rough drafts), but I'm gonna try. There's things I really want to do, and we can't do them if the quest spins its wheels!

Since ceri is going to visit them, this could be a good chance to hear their story since ceri doesnt know anything about their backstory either. I mean, it's not like the quest didn't delve into their backstory a little.

There's no clean way to go into details without bogging DR down even further, sadly. I'm going to try to drop bits and pieces as we go, since I feel a giant wall of backstory text all at once wouldn't be an easy segment to swallow.

Again, as much as I enjoyed doing the Daatra segment (and how important it was to me to be able to do it), she really did kind of get in the way of everything else. Getting things back on track is the general theme of thread 8.

It's a bit untrustworthy and creepy when "fixing your mistakes" involes using their mod powers to modify old posts in secret to make it seem somthing never happened.

I do admit it was a weird scene and I don't believe there were any evil intentions(unlike a lot of the secret mod stuff that happens on the internet) behind the secret modification but I still feel we should of been told (in quest or questdis) "that was a weird scene that gave some improper impresses, so I'm laying down a quick fix" or something like that.

The scene was very uncomfortable in hindsight, and people kept making very... concerning jokes in relation to it.

The new scene sticks as close as it can so none of the overall story is affected.

I'm not going to argue about it, though. It's my quest. I do what I want with it. Others can ask the mods for the same.

You probably noticed DR's pacing has been perhaps... lacking.

I don't have any excuses anymore, really. Depression a shit, and in general I think I'm reaching the point of being kinda done doing quests.

10 years is a long time to be doing something, after all.

It could be burnout, but it feels like the burnout that needs not a couple months off, but an entire year.

Of course that option is off the table, so I keep forcing myself to continue, caring less and less that DR's quality and speed are slipping.

I don't know a real way to fix it. I'm desperately hoping I can get into a proper habit of doing it such that, at the very least, it feels like a job and not 6 hours of doing a thing I don't really wanna do.

If you have advice, I'm all ears.
>>
No. 127508 ID: 5fc3a0

>>127502

I'll take a shot, although this may not be advice so much as my thoughts on this sort of thing.

I'm not good at advice, but I've had to work through burnout 98% of the time for a few years now, and depression for much longer, so your troubles are hitting close to home. For me specifically, I consciously want to quest and draw consistently, but every time I sit at my computer, all non-conscious parts of my body very bluntly say 'no'. Often if I try to do so much as grab my tablet pen, my arm won't move to do it, and that's a weird thing to explain to people who haven't personally experienced that sort of will failure.

I've combatted this sort of thing directly for a long time, acting like willpower is a muscle that gets better the more it's exercised. Maybe that's worked for some people, but I don't know any and it sure hasn't worked for me. I'm not the slightest bit better at ignoring burnout or forcing myself to do things I don't want to do any better than I was years ago, when UnSe started choking on its own mechanics.

It's only recently that I've started to come to terms that short of calling it quits and stopping my quests (I'm not doing this) to move elsewhere in life for some new novel career/hobby/whatever, I have to to treat burnout like a permanent obstacle that has to be navigated, rather than an obstacle to be permanently removed. Same thing with depression. This comes with a simultaneous desire to have updates be top notch quality while also wanting to knock out update after update without a fuck about the end result.

What success I've had has been more about focusing on things I can do, things the rest of my body won't bluntly say 'no' about and also lend themselves to doing what I'd like to do. For instance, instead of attempting to draw an update, I'll just look at my drawing program and sit there gawking at it until I'll finally actually start doing something with it. I've spent upwards of 45 minutes doing nothing but putting an ass dent in my chair staring at the screen, knowing that if I let myself get distracted from that for even a little bit, I'll ruin all momentum I have against the inevitability that my body will eventually draw. Alternatively, I've also just had to treat it like a job, and accept that 8 hours of my day will be sacrificed whether I like it or not. These are just examples, not necessarily recommendations that are universal solutions.

All I can recommend is to try your best to find where your priorities are, and figure out what actions best solve/pursue those priorities. If something remains a priority even after difficulty and suffering is factored in, then said difficulty and suffering should be accepted through the pursuit of the goal, and I don't believe there's nothing wrong with that. There are things worth doing even if you don't enjoy them. If, on the other hand, you end up completely disinterested in questing, inside and out, then maybe the priority should involve an escape plan.

This sort of outlook is something I've only recently started to internalize, so my thoughts here may be very prematurely delievered. I'm only doing it now just because of the timing of your post. If my wall of text here doesn't seem helpful, then I won't be surprised, because a lot of this is stuff you have to figure out on your own. If you manage to find an answer through someone else or some other external means, then great, but I wouldn't count on it. If nothing else, now you know some of my issues.

On the other hand, if you solve burnout and figure out how to passionately care, let me know how you did it.

so, I'm not an artist, so I don't know if this will help, but I found a blog post:

https://www.artworkarchive.com/blog/how-to-overcome-creative-burnout

Maybe you'll find something that will help!

Also, as a fan whose read a lot of both Slinko and Lagatrope quests, the most important thing to me has been the characters and how they interact with each other. For Slinko, watching the Ceri and her friends and family all interacting is my favorite part of Dragon Romance! I haven't actually noticed a decline in quality of quest, I think the art still looks great, so don't be too hard on yourself, Slinko!

A lot of that also goes for you, Lagatrope. UnSe had me alternating between laughing out loud in the wrestling sections, and on the verge of tears in others, like when Likol sacrificed himself. Asteroid and Polo Quest are wonderful, and Three Stripes is adorable!

You are both great artists, which means that the art doesn't need to perfect. I almost flunked out of school when my dad pulled me aside and said, "It doesn't need to be perfect, son. It just needs to get done." You guys are both talented and practiced artists, so it's okay if the art isn't perfect; don't kill yourselves over it!

I'd also add on to this something else.

I've also suffered depression for a long time, and it wasn't until just a few months ago that I finally started getting it under control. I'd tried different therapists and medications for years until something actually worked and it wasn't just a temporary placebo. I don't know your guys's situations, but um, I guess you could contact me if it would help? I don't if I could do anything, but depression fucking sucks, so let me know, I guess?

oh no we both have these struggles up to and including staring at the tablet pen wishing our hand would move to grab it

I wish I could figure out some way to bring the 2009 tezakia hype magic to 2019, or to not have had a Questing Embargo rob me of a few years of productive hype (and the early completion of slissa quest).

There are moments I'm still excited about, but they feel so impossibly far away now.

Almost all of the people we were inspired by have left or otherwise minimized their output. We might be the only two people who stayed here that whole time.

I guess it follows that we're the two who need to figure this out...

This isn't really advice, but maybe this'll help you speed up to the events you want to do.

On the calendar in the quest, all the days with events marked on them can be the focus for most of a thread. And if we finish the event fairly quickly, the rest of the thread can be spent doing 1 thing until the end of the day.

However, all of the days that are blank with no events marked on them, we can skip through them. Just give us a list of options at the start of those days and we'll vote for which 3 we want to do that day. Then you just give a general summary of what happened during that day along with any stat increases. Then once we get to another marked event, that event becomes the focus for the rest of the thread, unless we finish quickly enough, then it's back to 1 activity for the rest of that day.

I hope that I explained this good enough. And if you can understand any of it, then I hope it helps you!

Disclaimer: I'm not really what I'd call an artist, so you can probably stop reading if you don't want to hear an outsider's most likely useless advice. I just want to try saying something on the off chance it might help.

When I get bored of video games I like to put arbitrary restrictions on what I'm doing. Like, using only certain jobs in a job-based game like FFT, or using items I don't normally use, or gimmick builds in something heavily customizable like path of exile.
What I'm saying is try doing something different with your art program to mix things up. Even if it's something as simple as a different color on your sketch layer. Or maybe draw something completely unrelated before you start drawing updates. You know, silly sketches to warm up. Maybe with your off hand, or with a different brush than usual. Play around with digital painting, sketch something from real life, see how many dickbutts you can fit on your canvas...

Not to get too far ahead of myself, but I do intend for thread 9 to finish out the remaining days with a strategy similar to that. Depending on what happens we could see it require both 9 and 10, but I'm really committed to getting the plot going places (as much as I like the slow slice of life stuff-- which isn't going away! just being streamlined).

To think I originally wanted to do the entire 2 week bloc in thread 5...

>>127514
Koror's doing that a little bit. It's being drawn in CSP instead of SAI, meaning it lacks the SAI smoother and the familiarity I have with that program. In exchange, I have a whole bunch of new tools to play with for coloring and digital painting.

Anyway, I've made a decision in light of all the drowning I seem to be doing. For now, DR is going to drop to two updates a week, with no hard set days. Koror will go up in between it, but will likely hover at 1 to 2 updates a week itself.

Once I'm in a better place I'll go back to my intended schedule of MWF, but for the moment I think crawling along at 2 a week is better than floundering out until I stop completely.

Words fail me. The English language doesn't do this often, normally I've got eloquent speech, synonyms, and over-long words out the ass.

Not this time.

You two are the quest authors. Not some of the quest authors, the quest authors.

I've read Chee quest, Fen quest, Asteroid quest and Story seeker. Venji quest, Dragon romance, and Koror quest.

And I can't think up the words to express what these stories mean to me.

You two are the icons of TG, the patron saints, the vanguards and the heroes.

You were here in the beginning, and you've stuck with it the whole time.

You've shaped this website into the amazing place it is today.

You deserve more praise than this fanbase could ever give.

I know the feeling, you stare at a blank screen, chastising yourself for not having the will to write, the will to draw.

But both of you, in a display that can be called nothing but heroic, kept going.

And you just keep on going. And I just don't know how to explain how incredible that is.

I'm crying right now. I haven't cried in four years, but there you have it. I can't tell if they're tears of joy, or if I cry for the sacrifices you've made, but I'm crying.

On this day, words, who have been a steadfast and reliable companion for my entire adult life, have failed me.

But you two? You've never failed me.

And maybe this sounds weird, and maybe you won't believe me, but I love you both.

Maybe I do have the words after all: Thak you.

I find I lack the words to respond in the way I feel is deserved. It's hard to fathom that my silly stories and scribbles would mean anything to anyone. I can't speak for lago, but it can be all too easy to fall into the trap of assuming nobody cares (even as people tell you they do).

But I'm not thinking that now.

I'm struggling a bit, but I've no intention of giving up. I crawled out of a similar hole when I started DR, so I just need to do it again.

For those who find my stuff worthy of their time, and to those who stuck with me through mistakes and bad times, You have my sincere thanks.

Rest assured, I will do everything I can to keep the promise I made ten years ago: To see this through until the end.

This minigame is a bit bigger than previous ones, so it's taking a bit, but I'd put it at about 75% done. Hopefully you guys will find it worth the wait!

It's intended to be the last minigame/cutscene for a good while, so I'm trying to make it count.

We're hoping to get it done in the next few days. I wouldn't, uh, expect it to look like delta-rune or anything, but it's so far looking to be a nice step up from the original mallventure minigame.

Hey there, people. Hey, Slinko.

Um, this is the first time ever I'm using this particular interface, so please excuse me if I eff up something protocol-post side.

So, um. I am... somewhat late to what was written here about a month ago. Twenty-six days actually, but who counts*ahem*

Yet I... wanted to chime in. To express my support, despite being a complete and total stranger from somewhere around the world.

I'll try to keep the spaghetti to a minimum. It's very late here, and I'm moderately sleep deprived, so again, excuse me if my words set someone off the wrong way.

The Not Spaghetti part who am I kidding

I discovered "Dragon Romance" literally six days ago. Completely through a fluke. Up until that point, I had no idea about its existence, the existence of "Quests" in general, or the community that had created and gathered them. And I still have a lot to discover and understand.

I read through DR non-stop during these six days until I finally caught up with the update progress. Time flew by, while I remained glued to the screen, barely remembering I had a life of my own.

DR was a profound experience for me. Very profound. The way it combined philosophy with optimism, the way it weaved existential questions as old and deep as creation itself with uplifting moments, the way Ceridwen is so upbeat and alive, so vital and believable, so... real. The whole story is so... poignant. and truly funny when it aims to entertain

This was (and continues to be) one of the very best stories I've ever experienced in my relatively sheltered life. It moved me to tears. It was so good, so excellent, so very Inspiring that I genuinely wept, overloaded with pure emotion. Because it is that perfect. Not flawless. But perfect. And awesome. And very, very heartwarming.

You know how, like, 95% of all stories are always a -person vs. person- conflict? And how the other five percent that are about the other two "megatypes", -person vs. environment- and -person vs. self- are usually hot garbage poorly told attempts at storytelling? Well, from this point on, I consider DR to be my gold standard for -person vs. self- conflict.

So, Slinko, I don't know how much you care about this, but I consider you a true Creator. A Creator that Inspires with a capital "I", for your Art, also with a capital letter, was able to touch the soul of one such humble individual as me.

I will also say the same about the others who are part of this community - the musicians, the illustrators, the wordsmiths, the multi-talents; for they, too, provide inspiration through their own creations, mutual support, and visions for a more transcendent reality, and ALL OF YOU for certain have touched the hearts of others, for there is a star for every ray of light.

And I will also say the same about the readers and participants in the Quests themselves - for they are those that experience the myriad of adventures and walk the roads of fantastic journeys, bringing joy to themselves and to those that provided them with the freedom of infinite worlds to explore, infinite stories to witness, and infinite opportunities to develop a mutual understanding and connection of each other in the process of such endless fun.

(<<<SPAGHETTI INTENSIFIES>>>)

(Backontrack.exe initiated...)

The point about creative burnout is a difficult issue. I, too, have the "honor" of knowing all-too-well about it. I have faced it in practically every creative endeavor I've ever dabbled: game programming, GM-ing tabletop rpgs, creative writing, and so on. In fact, even right now I'm struggling with it, as I try to finish a novel that I've been working on for three years.

I can talk alot on the subject; some of it would probably be bullshit, some may contain a genuine answer to the problem. Yet to be candid (and succinct ah, wait, no, that ship has sailed many paragraphs ago), I haven't found the silver bullet - and I'm probably a long way off from discovering it, if ever.

Yet if there's one nugget of wisdom that I've stumbled across after so many years of abandoned projects and moping around, it's that perseverance is key. Not only in art, and not only in work. In life in general. Consistency, practice, willpower, determination, resolution, striving toward a dream - often it takes A LOT of effort to attain the desired goal, and the way to reaching it is... to continue on the road.

Sometimes it'll be slow. Sometimes it'll be okay. Sometimes, you'll even get to ride the highway. Yet like all roads, it ends sooner or later; you just have to keep walking. It's okay to rest, to pause, to look around and examine the scenery - often, what brings spring back into one's step are the sights along the journey, not the thoughts about the destination itself.

And regarding the depression, I understand you, Slinko. I've been there. It's a horrible, all-consuming, endlessly bleak state that I've struggled with for years. So many, long years. I've tried all kinds of stuff; talking with friends and relatives (if they're listening); professional help; medication; meditation (that one kinda helped, but YMMV); soul-searching; everything.

It was a long, terrible, and arduous period in my life. Until 2017, when I finally made a breakthrough, and thought it was all done. It wasn't. It's not as bad as before, yet I still have issues. Still have doubts. Still feel socially awkward (that's why spaghetti atm), and still have days when I just want everything to end, so I can finally have peace.

And you know what? Sometimes I get those days of peace. I get them thanks to shining beacons like "Dragon Romance". Thanks to people who create, dream, and want to share their inner spark with the world.

I find peace, and much more, I find light, thanks to people like you, Slinko.

So, I conclude this totally-not wall-of-doom ramble to plonk down the tl;dr version of what I've been wanting to say this entire time: Thank you, Slinko.

Thank you. For bringing DR into this world, for weaving such a perfect story alongside everyone who participates, and for weathering so selflessly the storms of life so you can share the Flame of your Soul.

Thank you.

It appears the spaghetti plague has infected me as well, I knew I should have been purifying my water.

Wall of text incoming;

I personally have never had to contend with depression, but that's mostly because I'm already too F-ed in the head to be capable of such deep emotionality.

I'm a sociopath, I like to talk about it because I'm also a hopelessly egotistical narcissist who resembles a comic book villan in far more ways than I'm comfortable talking about.

I'm a very unusual sociopath as well, rather then the normal cause for such an affliction (an overall lack of neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to extreme anti-emotionality), I was simply born with far fewer mirror neurons than nature intended, leading to a lack of empathy.
I have trouble perceiving other humans as anything but complex biological machines, no less important or extraordinary than a computer. It means that I usually come off as haughty, caustic, and overall cruel. For example, I laughed so hard at my grandmothers funeral, it just seemed funny at the time. For another example; I broke a kid's nose against a steel lunch table because he took my chocolate milk, I was six. I still don't feel bad for either of those things, I honestly don't think I'm capable of feeling bad for actions like that.

I digress; my point is, I generally don't feel anything other than superficial emotion towards other human beings. But honestly, I feel more emotion towards people and characters on this website than I've ever felt before.

I find such interesting quests, engage with people who I feel such... feelings towards! And laugh regularly at the hilarious suggestions people post.

It's like that scene at the end of How The Grinch Stole Christmas when his heart grows and he feels the warm tingly feeling of love for the first time. I'm serious, I felt the actual emotion of love for the first time on this website, and in the couple short months since I've discovered TGchan, I actually got a romantic partner, something I'd never even considerd before.

It's changed my entire life; the board, the quests, but most of all; the people.

People like Slinko, Test Pattern, Lagotrope, Hard Reptilian With No Extremities, Kome, anon 2202fb, and you Vake.
You peoples are the closest thing I have to friends. (Is that sad? Or touching? I can't tell. But I'm going with the latter.)

It's funny to think that the most profound things I've ever written were posts on a discussion thread for a quest on a chan board; funny, but no less meaningful.

Thanks for this gift Slinko. Bet this isn't the kinda thing you anticipated when you made this Dis-thread, huh?

Thanks for your words, Vake. You may not realize it, but you're one of the brilliant stars that go into making this website what it is.

Thanks, Hard Reptilain With No Extremities. You were the first person to ever reply to one of my posts, and the one who convinced me to actually stay on this website. You're a good... Friend? Can I call you a friend? What's the rules on officiating friendship? I think you get the idea.

I love this website, and the people who make it a great place to be. Thanks for giving me a scrap of humanity, a great community, and a brilliant questing continuity. (Oh no, I'm rhyming.)

Yay!

EMOTIONAL OVERLOAD Round 2. <3

:)

(Stand by... Was to the dentist today, and smiling hurts a bit for now.)

Ever since I was in my darkest period in my life - 2015, wherein I barely dodged the (self-inflicted)bullet by dying from some kind of psychological shutdown (can't remember how exactly the shrink described it) - I had a simple epiphany: even if I wanted, nay, desired to throw my life away because I felt like an utter failure, I decided that I would throw it away right - and that is by helping of other people anyway that is within my limited power.

That meant encouraging others in their own dark moments; giving away my meager material wealth whenever I could to help others achieve something important, yet barely within reach; and offering praise and compassion for everyone I could muster, because these are things that are more precious than ever in today's highly turbulent times.

Because, as Ceridwen herself puts it, that's the kind of dragon person I want to be.
Well, I did self-identify as a dragon at one point, but now... nahh. I've entered a phase where I'm doing a LOT of gazing - both inward toward my soul, and outward toward my fellow kindred spirits... and the stars.

So, there. As one old meme put it, everybody has superpowers - and in the case of people like Slinko, as well all the others I'm about to discover on this site/network, their superpower lies in the fact that they can gaze into the Eye of the Universe and draw forth Beauty from it.
That one again came out too flowery, huh?

Raptie, thanks for the Discord invite. I'll reach out to you shortly. (Shortly being, ah, within 48 hours, as I'm currently very sluggish regarding daily routines.)

Asa the wizard, I'm glad that this place gives you such positive feedback. What's the constantly ever-optimistic thing about life is, that wonders both big and small can be discovered everywhere - one must only be willing and open enough to find and receive them. :)

Okay, okay. Done with the spaghetti, I think we've produced enough virtual foodstuffs to cure global hunger. :D

Slinko, my friend, do you ever sleep? Or like, spend time not working your ass off?

But seriously, do not worry about taking too long with the minigame. It's a minigame. A minigame. A literal, free-to-play, miniature video game. You'd be justified to take months making something like this.

But nope, not Slinko. No he makes a flash game every couple of weeks.

You really give this quest 105% effort, Slinko. Props.

Just make sure you take enough time off for yourself.

Goodness!

I'm not sure what to say-- I never really imagined any of my silly creations would actually like, move people or have that kind of meaning (beyond tezakia meaning a bunch to me for personal reasons).

Sometimes doing this stuff is hard, and sometimes it's really hard.

But more than ever it seems important for me to continue moving forward, even if occasionally at a slower pace.

We must reach those moments that make it all worth it. When stories reach there climax, when plans finally came together. To see the result of the stories we crafted together as authors and suggestors. The moments that define everything we've worked so hard for.

DR was created as a 'screw it' quest after almost giving up. It was intended to be a mindless sex quest about a dragon lady who didn't even have a name yet.

It's become much more than the original concept, owing both to my love of writing character stuff and /quest/'s desire to learn more about Ceri and her world.

I guess the lesson is... sometimes it doesn't hurt to go 'screw it' and try one more time.

I'm grateful to those who found enjoyment in my little scribbles and writings, something I didn't dare dream could happen ten years ago.

I actually spend plenty of time goofing around!

Yeah, most DR updates take 6-8 hours to write and draw, but at most I do it 3 days a week so on average it's not so bad.

Speaking of minigames... all writing and art are done, and the code is coming along (we're mushing together the mallventure code and the cutscene engine code into a code pile~).

There's maybe 2x the text I thought there'd be, making this the most textual minigame to date.

Hopefully folks will enjoy it~
>>
No. 128225 ID: 395c02

Did you know code is hard???

This is a considerable upgrade over the mallventure code, which requires more than slapping a couple more lines of code on top!

Especially since it's merging the newer cutscene engine code rather than using mallventure's comparitively simple MGS dialog code.

But since my part has been done for a bit, I'm not likely to really need a 'break' once it's out, so DR might go ahead and hit the ground running once things are ready.

Stay tuned!

Yeah, coding is hard. Or at least in the beginning.

Essentially, it boils down to explaining convoluted concepts to a very dumb servitor (a computer) in precise, exact terms, which you know would be carried out verbatim no matter how much sense they make (or don't).

That, or it's actual wizardry.

As much as I would love to sit here and write in great depth about every single little detail I liked about the mini game, I'm afraid I don't have the week or so it would take to write that all out.

So I'll try to keep it brief.

I loved the game. It did in an hour of gameplay what it might have taken a hundred updates to convey.

The art was fantastic, and the format gave it the same atmosphere that the rest of the quest has, leading to a seamless transition between mediums, and good immersion.

There was also a lot of dialogue with Siphon, which I always appreciate as she is one of my favorite characters. The lore was also fascinating, yet concise. Giving good backstory to Siphon and friends, while keeping the information in a digestible format.

The humor made me chortle several times out loud, which is most certainly high praise from me. But always to be expected from DR.

Kudos. Major Kudos. To you Slinko, and to everyone who pitched in on the game.

An important reminder: A slinkoquest will never (intentionally) require you to know something the quest itself doesn't tell you. It's why I don't post LORE in my DIS thread.

DR isn't part of any other quest universe. It's a Patreon quest. It has no connection to any other quest beyond a few things being bolted on as part of the Aliens being patreon'd in.

This choice really seems like it's being presented as a choice between a) story continues focusing on romance adventures and resolving Ceri's personal issues or b) story switches focus more towards the hidden mystery (possibly meta-narrative?) space backstory stuff. It's more than possible that's not the intent, but I think it's important that we're sure what we're voting for if there's a possibility of it having a giant impact on the quest's direction?

I mean, if that WAS the choice being presented, it would kind of be a disservice to Ceri. She has a lot of stuff still needing to be resolved! Couldn't she have one adventure and then a sequel rather than tangling everything up into one story?

Like, if Ceri had a Quest Log, it'd be something like:
1) a) Fix my extremely dangerous and worrying magical medical conditions.
-- b) Find out what my biological parents did and how screwed I am in a not-fun way.
-- c) Resolve inevitable issues stemming from/revealed by 1a and 1b.
2) a) Get my boyfriend's parents to accept and approve of our relationship. (Sub-quest: Ensure boyfriend's renown)
-- b) Overturn mortal world's negative opinion of dragons/dragons' opinion of mortal world.
-- c) Ho boy that last one sounds like a tall order let's have it take up two slots
3) -- Be there for my friend/sister when her long-distance boyfriend who MAYBE wants to break up with her comes to visit.
4) a) Help space friends rescue the friend they think is on this planet.
-- b) Investigate other hinted space friend problems/needs and assist with them.
-- c) Investigate potential needs or wants of other friends and help them.
5) -- I accidentally a cult what do
6) -- How long have I even been technically an adult don't I need to like go to school or college or something aaa

Plus we need to keep in mind all of these will likely expand into additional sub-quests while being resolved. The current choice seems like it would add another very large chunk under section 4, there, and probably distract from/disrupt the things that already need doing, since it possibly has implications for the nature of reality and so on? And we're kind of invested in a lot of these already.

The poor girl's kind of got a lot to keep track of.

Important reminder 2: The choice is whether or not Siphon said all that in front of Ceri and her parents. It affects how the parents act going forward, and choosing it means Ceri and the Aliens will talk a bit more about the backstory here and there.

We have too much important plot going on to shift gears that dramatically!
>>

>>128429
It wouldnt be shifting gears that drastically, it would be more like changing the nature and perspective of our current objectives. The objectives still stand, but it might mean we need to start tying up loose ends (#2). #1 and #4 seem like they could be interrelated. Parts of #2 could also relate to those. #3 is ongoing and will stop the day ceri either dies (post-happily ever after) or has a friendship-break up. #5 doesnt really seem that important overall. #6 is synonymous with #1 bc it is through the school (sort of).

I like this potential darker direction, but it seems like your innate story genius may have bit off more than you can chew, so to speak. I am not trying to force you to do anything as you are the author and I am not (hell, i cant even afford to be a patron), so this is just my two cents.

Anyway, I have absolute confidence that if you do go the darker, more intricate route, you will do so magnificently, but it is obviously ultimately your choice, not ours.

I also personally think you should canonize this quest since it is an absolute masterpiece.

The nature of reality thing might be a dragon, and/or one of those power sources found in thread 4. Chei could also be stuck with them. I think it is possible for it to be addressed sufficiently without invalidating the quest up to this point.

So to clarify, the whole ship and such was all from a patreon thing and you didnt just do that? It might be worth chatting with Cirr and the rest of the Superculture authors so you could add in the lore without just making things confusing or doing them an injustice. This is of course assuming that you would want to do this in the first place.

I'll take the risk of letting you see too much behind the curtain and admit I'm slightly blind-sided by the amount of interest and attention given to a part of the game I honestly didn't expect many people to find. Originally the password was going to be hidden much better, and because it required obscure off-site knowledge, I didn't include it in any of my immediate plans. As I said, I don't like using things the quest doesn't very obviously and directly show people.

But it sounds like enough people have found it and know about it that...

Well, quests are about being willing to change (and let go of) your plans. The willingness to go 'Okay, let's forge a path into the unknown and see what happens'.

Winging it, one of the things I'll begrudgingly admit I might be pretty decent at. Peep peep.

I will think on the suggestions and the paths ahead between here and when we resume normal updates. Whatever happens... it'll certainly be interesting~

>>128433
The aliens are... awkward. DR was never intended to include anything about them, but all three got added to the patreon at the same time, and I had to awkwardly duct-tape them on top of DR.

We've spent a lot of threads trying to paint over that duct-tape so it's less visible, but it's never going to be super clean.

The main caveat of DR is I'm not willing to try and keep track of a bunch of things outside DR itself. The recap itself was mostly told by Dylan because I honestly don't remember fishbowl that well. You and I know the same amount of stuff about it except for a couple things I kinda remember from later sessions sorta almost a tiny bit.

If DR has a 'superculture', the caveat is I can do what I want with it and it doesn't have to be 'correct'. That's why DR isn't part of any other universe-- I want to be able to change things to suit the needs of my story. This also means you don't gain anything buy religiously studdying those things from other quests-- my version might be completely different.

In other words: There is no relevent superculture lore. If there is, DR will tell you about it.

If you want an honest opinion, I REALLY don't want DR to suddenly switch tack into alien backstory adventure. I want to see the story that's been set up so far get resolved. I wouldn't mind if DR finished and then we got DR 2: To The Moon! quest, but please don't abandon what we have!

I mean, maybe I'm wrong, but I think a lot of the current interest in that secret stuff is because it was secret, and therefore seemed like it must be important. People attach value to things that were harder for them to get.

It was a tabletop campaign, not a quest!

Speaking of quests and unexpected paths, Chei originally showed up in DR specifically so he could 'technically' be a quest character. But, as Chei often does, he took things over a little bit despite not actually being around.

Fishbowl doesn't intend to be a very big part of DR beyond informing the alien's actions and desires, but... well, the original campaign fell apart before reaching an ending. In some ways, DR is sort of trying to give them a proper sendoff.

Tezakia Quest turns ten on November 9th.

With that in mind, I've decided to do a bit of a retrospective. I'm going to redraw some of the important images and give a bit of commentary and reflection.

Now, I could bust out the perspective tools and make these images super duper pretty, but I think the spirit of Tezakia is much closer to DR in terms of effort and time spent. So it's essentially 'what if we moved to a timeline where my 2015 quest is Tezakia instead of DR and also it's in 2019 instead'.

I'm not doing this all at once, but every now and then I'll make these posts over the next few months as the mood strikes me.

If you read it, I hope you enjoy~ If not, then uh you won't see this part??

"Sekani is in a lot of pain."

Let's start at the beginning: Image 1. Quest1.png was the very first image I made for my very first quest. This is the beginning of it all. The start of a very long journey.

Up until this point, projects I made either didn't finish, or did finish but nobody cared. This was my life for a lot of years.

This would change with the posting of quest1.png.

But let's save the sappy stuff for later. Time for some commentary!

We had a chargen. You could vote male or female, tezakia or rian. Or was it tezakian and lian? It'd take me a little bit to decide.

Yep, it's called 'Tezakia quest' because they were the Tezakia and won the chargen vote. The tezakians were inspired by Demesi of JOURNEY QUEST, and the Lians were inspired by VEN of DEEP. She would later get called a lizard because Lagotrope used a similar design for his lians I mean lizards.

And then, for perhaps the only time in all of questing history, the *male* character won the vote.

We had some discussion for names, and someone came up with Sekani. Sekani the male tezakia. Tezakian. Yeah, that sounds better.

I flipped a coin: Heads, we go on a cave adventure! tails, we go to a facility! Tails it is. Now, what genre should this quest be?

Here are some options: Comedy, drama, romance, adventure... haha, what if I put 'horror' as a choice? pfft, like anyone would want what do you mean everyone voted for that I don't know how to do a horror quest

....

Fine! Fine. Okay. I'll try. Spooky horror quest about a Tezakian in a facility. Let's do this. Maybe he gets hit with a syringe? We can have a bit of tension from him mutating into some kind of monster.

And that's how my little test quest began. Oh, didn't I mention that? I guess most of you know this already... Okay, let's go over it for those who don't.

Slissa Quest was going to be my first quest. It was the sequel to a different story from one of those unfinished projects.

But this is early tgchan. This is 'we broke away from 4chan mere months ago' tgchan. This is a site with what I saw as *masterpieces* in the major quests that existed at the time. This is where the mighty Weaver went after kickstarting the format with Ruby Quest.

I was not ready. Oh god.

New plan! Let's make sure I know what I'm doing before going over there to face the judgement of people fresh off the worst site on the internet.

A small quest. A tiny little quest to practice. To make my mistakes where few would see them. Let's keep it small. Maybe 4 chapters at the most. 200 images in and out tezakia quest.

10 years later, I would look at the folder of 1860 images and 13 animations and smile at the naivete of 2009 me.

And that's how it all began.

>stick [your] wounded arm into that hole, to find out what that dot is. It may not be an evil cycloptical mouse, after all.
"OH SWEET GODDESS LAKICIA THIS HURTS SO MUCH"

--------------

We made it 5 images before I made with the jokes. Horror is so far outside my comfort zone, guys.

But I don't just redraw this image for the jokes-- it too is a milestone. See, Tezakia is largely made up of sprites and maps. That's one of the major reasons it was able to have 1860 images in 7 months (DR has taken 3 years to reach 1500).

This was the first 'custom drawn' image of the quest, the first to not use the sprites and map. As the quest goes on we start seeing more custom images, but here in the beginning they are fairly rare.

(the original line is 'oh my god', but 2019 me would definitely use this moment to namedrop the tezakian goddess. 2019 me, unlike 2009 me, is a lot better about sneaking lore into the story).

Unlike every tgchan quest, Tezakia Quest had one big advantage: I did the updates in HTML and would put all 3-6 images in a single post. This let me do a lot with comedic then that I can't do now. Despite that, My quests are way funnier now than they were then.

10 years of experience will do that.

It was soon after this image that the quest ran into its first DRAMA.

See, I was running the quest for people who generally didn't know what a quest was. Because of this, Sekani's starting area is something of a tutorial. He's wounded, and one screen to his left was a bandanna he could use to tend to the wound.

One person was rather upset at how easy this was. I explained the tutorial nature, but I had no idea of the significance of that moment:

It was the beginning of ten years of making my quests pretty easy.

Maybe my friend had a point.

>Look at Poster, remove poster, see if there's anything behind poster (more blood perhaps?)
Sekani has no idea what he's looking at. What is this strange creature? It looks familiar...

Just how old is this place?

------------

The klis-khar--

....

That is not a klis-khar. That is not a klis-khar that 2009 me drew and 2019 copied pretty much exactly because he couldn't believe what he was looking at.

Anyway. I do a lot of winging it in quests, and no quest winged it harder than Tezakia. Those of you here with me in 2019 know that the klis-khar became one of the four standard races of Tezakia's world.

Back then, they were nothing more than an enigma. A race presumably long-since dead that created this facility. We now know the facility was built roughly 80 years before the quest proper, but at the time my mental idea was closer to 500. Like, this was meant to be an old, old place.

That number was adjusted down partly as I came up with ideas later that wouldn't fit with such a huge timescale, and because some of the stuff in the quest doesn't make a lot of sense with a number that big.

Thankfully, past me didn't officially age Rish-Khan until way, way later in the quest. That's the beauty of not using numbers: nobody can call you out on being wrong.

So, what's the story? Did Sekani forget they existed? Did he forget they live in the country just north of his as future maps depict?

My guess is the creature in the poster wasn't a klis-khar because look at it. That's clearly a, uh, majibeast. Of some kind. One that was so boring and uninteresting that everyone else forgot about them. They're still in the basement playing bridge.

side note: Remember that tutorial bandanna I mentioned earlier? The one for treating his bleeding arm?

They suggested he wear it as a hat and use the straps of a backpack to wrap it instead.

I wasn't even on tgchan and yet I too had my share of /quest/'s antics.

Huh. I hadn't registered that the board split off in '09.

>triggered: nostalgia tangent
Tgchan came to my notice at the tail end of '09 and I arrived a complete internet stranger. I'd recently binged on RubyQuest - while having no idea what 4chan is/was - and accidentally stumbled across the then-just-begun Nan Quest while reading up on Weaver. And, of course, a couple of the other Quests caught my attention (I was 'Voice of Reason' in Dungeon Game: The Quest, a moniker I used then and never again). I've been a faithful on-and-off boardlurker since. Kind of weird that I never realized I'd found the board the same year it was set up! Though the site had a quest backlog even back then and legacy games from 4chan, so I must've just assumed it was older.

In the intervening decade I've read/followed about a third or so of the archived quests, but I've actually yet to get into your old LJ-based stuff Slinko, which this retrospective is reminding me about. It's on my bucket list, I swear, but it can take some time for me to get started on the more hefty quests/stories. Case in point: despite them being one of tgchan's most prolific awesome quest authors - and me lurking about since almost the site's inception - I only began reading Lagotrope's stuff a bit over two years ago... and now, of course, rather regret not doing so far, far earlier. Huh... I might've actually started with the Clamp quest reboot, actually. I guess checking out quests when it isn't 'thread 4+' of something is easier on me.

It did make me step up my wiki-checking and archive-diving, though. I've found that even the older (and more than occasionally incomplete) quests made when quest authors were new are still good fun to read, and it's certainly cool to see stories and art styles develop over the years. That so many have stuck to this place and developed their brand of quest storytelling - and have been for years - is amazing and I love that you do so.

Reading the start of this retrospective reminded me a lot about Discovery channel in the 90s.

Sure, the tone is different, the medium is different, and... I guess the topic is nothing that'd ever find its way on pop-science TV. Yet the way the events of the past are presented, the manner in which historical context is worked elegantly into the personal timeline, and how other board members chime in to present a richer perspective-- yes, it certainly feels like I'm reading a documentary, and doing it in the middle of the night to boot for added atmosphere.

Honestly, if I was still in university studying historical-cultural heritage, I would've asked you Slinko for permission to write a paper on this.

Now I'm kinda sad how late I've started properly integrating myself into the digital age, yet as the saying goes, better late than never.

I'll keep following this retrospective with great interest.

Thanks for sharing this, Slinko.

"That hurt, you son of a bitch."

No... No no no no shit shit shit.

--------

Originally two separate images, it felt right to nonetheless combine them into one moment.

I had decided during character generation that the companion of the protagonist would be the exact opposite of what people voted for. A male tezakia(n) won, thus a female Lian was designed.

The 'protagonist' lian people could have voted fore wore something more tribal, and indeed tezakia's overall tech level might have been much lower had either of the Lians won the vote.

To make this particular lian more unique, I made her more busty (a novel decision of 2009 me, a very expected choice of 2019 me) and put her in more appropriate clothing for the tech-level of Tezakia.

There are two major things to note in this sequence: Sekani peeing himself and the suggestion that nearly ended the quest.

Let's start with the former. It's probably no surprise that I was made aware of Metal Gear Solid around this time. A certain scene with Otakon inspired the idea of Sekani being so incredibly afraid that he too would lose control of his... bird? bladder?

Speaking of which, the protagonists had a bit of differences in their personalities. A male tezakian would be cowardly, and a female tezakian less willing to deal with gore and body horror. This is why Sekani, despite being a coward, didn't tend to react that strongly to the more horror-ific scenery he'd find himself surrounded by.

People would spend several years joking about watersports and fetishes because 2009 me thought him peeing made him look more scared.

...Hmm? Ah, That Suggestion. Faced with a spooky lian, a race his race is at war with, a creature currently pointing a DEADLY WEAPON right at him...

Someone suggested he compliment her tits.

Yep. That's when I very seriously, for longer than one might be comfortable with, entertained the thought of Sekani doing that, getting shot, and the quest being over.

But we had just started this thing, and I didn't much like the idea of throwing out a bad end so early in the adventure. So I did the only other thing I could think to do.

Writing and drawing DR is hard. It's hard normally, but it's going to be very hard for this picnic segment.

I'll warn now that it's not likely the quest will update faster than once per 3 days. One day to collect suggestions, one day to write, one day to art. Writing has gotten that slow.

There might also be heavy use of the simple art style. Normally I use it for effect or to keep myself from dying, but in this case I might need to make entire updates in the simpler style.

Take the time you feel is right, Slinko.

Don't sweat it on using a simpler art-style to power through the picnic. As another poster had said, the upcoming segment/scenes will have a TON of characters, and that definitely adds a considerable complexity overhead.

Also, as Jeff Vogel has taught the internet, there is always the option of refactoring/improving/remaking a given work of art at a later point in the future. It's even financially viable, judging by the work of the "crazy old uncle" of the indie gamedev scene.

Alongside the mantra of "An art piece is never finished, only the artists stops working on it" and other wise words crappy generic pep talk.

Anyway, cheers from the sidelines!

Today I'll be talking about chapter 2's opening animation. I considered redrawing it, but looked at how many images that'd require and noped the hell out.

But, I decided to redo the song. You can check it out here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYdK-FLmANI&feature=youtu.be

I redid the song for a few reasons:

1: I really didn't like the original.
2: It gives a rough idea of what Tezakia 2 might sound like (though that will hopefully have typo helping)
3: This animation is actually a decent thing to talk about.

--------------------

I almost forgot to mention that Tezakia was a 'test quest' in multiple ways. For example, it was the first time I drew anything in Painttool Sai.

Before Tezakia, I used a really old kinda janky version of Photoshop, but one of my friends basically bullied me into using SAI and I figured I'd humor them by doing this tiny itty bity short quick little quest in it.

...So yeah, I still use SAI to this day.

As for the scene itself... well. Originally this quest was only going to have two animations: an introduction and an ending.

But one of the readers got really, really hype about seeing what animation would accompany thread 2. They had hit on my greatest weakness: the fact that I really hate disappointing people.

So I scrambled over about 4 hours to make some kind of song and a basic animation, just so one guy wouldn't be disappointed in the lack of a flash on top of the thread.

That mentality would lead to the quest having 13 animations.

These animations were made in Macromedia flash studio 8 (circa 2006), a program I would use for every animation until DR would switch to a Dylan-coded cutscene engine.

...Funny how history can repeat itself. DR was also intended to be smaller and shorter (and lacking in animations)...

This'll be the only animation I do this for. The song was just... so bad. I had to.

T-thanks! It's been something of a dream to have That Big Orchestral Moment in one of my creations. It's no exaggeration to say I probably spent nearly 20 years trying and failing to make such a moment. I certainly could have if I focused on music, but music took a pretty constant back-seat to art and animation stuff. I don't regret that, especially nowadays with Typo willing to help out, but that part of me never fully died out.

One day...~

Anyway, thanks everyone for indulging this old man's nostalgia. Looking back is cementing my realization that if I get to the point where I'm making tezakia 2, I'll absolutely have the resolve and excitement in me to finish it no matter how worn out I get before then.

Onwards we forge~

Minor thing: I'm going to try something a bit different with the update schedule. I'm going to keep to updating roughly every 3 days, but I'm going to start including the weekends in that. Meaning updates will sometimes go up Saturday and sunday.

I think overall this will be less stressful than forcing myself to finish an update on Friday, as often would happen.

This might also lessen the overall stress vs trying (and often failing) to commit to every two weekdays, which itself should leave me more able to do other things (like Koror!).

Let's see how it goes~

That said, the picnic might still need an extra day here or there for the huge multi-character updates.

FUUUUUUUUUUCK!

---------------

You might notice this is the original image and not a redrawing. Hang on! There's a reason for this beyond laziness! mostly

The topic this time is... the art itself! See? Gotta have more faith in your good buddy Slinko to only sometimes things out of laziness.

Enough stalling. The monster in that image is later revealed to be Tayza. But the monster in that image looks absolutely nothing like Tayza. There's actually a few different points to hit here.

1: Majibeasts weren't all female yet. I don't think I gendered them at all at this point, because they were originally supposed to be mindless monsters. That little curve you see isn't meant to be feminine (which is easily proven by actual tayza's mighty flat chest), I was just bad at drawing big muscular chests.

2: Speaking of that. Like most artists who actually care about learning and improving, I'm extremely aware of my weaknesses and failings artistically. Tezakia quest actually uses this to its advantage! Things that wanted to look cute (like our plucky lian protagonist up there) were drawn in a very simple style. I knew I couldn't make cute eyes, so I reduced their eyes to a single dot. This was the first time I had ever done so.

This was reversed for things that wanted to be spooky. Knowing my ability faltered when drawing detail, that's exactly what I'd draw for the ki-jaara. By not just drawing them detailed, but being really bad at drawing them detailed, they gained a real surreal quality that I can't actually recreate nowadays. At least, not in the same way.

Once you've gone through the practice and gained better line control, it's really hard to 'turn that off' and fake the terrible line control 2009 me had. My line control nowadays isn't even that good (I'm often saved by a smoother), it's just 2009 me was very not good.

3: A lot of Tezakia was winged, but this segment was after a flip of the coin decided tezakia would have magic rather than high technology. I don't think it was officially called 'majicka' yet, but the idea that some kind of magical force corrupted people was in mind even this early.

So the first ki-jaara had me choose a race (I don't remember if I rolled a dice or not), and then I aimed to make them look more... feral. ferocious. Then I let my iffy art abilities carry them to full monster-hood.

Later in this same quest, Tayza's design would show that my ability to use this tactic really didn't last very long.

You know, reading this 10-year anniversary lookback made me realize I, too, kinda have an anniversary of my own, though in a different context.

I made a bet 10 years ago. It was during the last year of high school - me and a good friend of mine were having a major fallout. He was dealing with his first heartbreak, and the inability to cope made him very depressed. I tried to help him by encouraging him to let go and gave advice how to make things go smooth in the future. He didn't listen at all, going as far as not speaking a single word on some days. I kept trying to help, to offer support, but it was to no avail. In his resent to the world, my friend called me childish, immature, naive goof who had no idea how life works. In a way, he was right. In time his despair drove a rift between us. Until one day, he heard the same advices I was giving him from another "cool kid", and started following them with blind zeal.
He did also a few other petty things, but by that time the ship had sailed sunk.

It was the last straw, and I told him in a very direct manner what was wrong with him and how his solutions wouldn't work. He accused me in turn how I was wrong and my methods are meaningless. So as we finished high school and went our separate ways, we made a bet that both of us shall walk our own paths, and that we shall meet again in 10 years and see who was right, and who was wrong in our worldviews.

The end date of this bet is somewhere in May later this year.

I had vowed to myself back then that I'd show my friend how successful I'd become, how grand my life would become by the time I'd be approaching my 30s, and would become not only an example to him, but to anyone else who would give themselves to despair and defeat.

Instead, I spent those 10 years fighting my own inner demons. I battled failure and depression time and again, giving into overwhelming misery, coming several times a knife-edge away from suicide. I became neither rich, nor famous, nor a shining example to anybody.

I simply learned a lot about life, and about living.

Is it a coincidence I discovered Dragon Romance and tgchan in general so recently? Is it some kind of noospheric synchronicity that Slinko has such an important anniversary in the very same period? Some kind of random cosmic irony?

I don't know. It's very probable there are hundreds of thousands of people out there who are also arriving at and/or celebrating/reminiscing about important moments in their life. I simply lack the awareness to perceive their own trials and triumphs. I am just a random guy on a random site on the Internet, and I know about an important period in the life of another because said other had chosen to share it with the wider world.

Yes, Tezakia's anniversary definitely made me contemplative. Even though I've known about it's existence for two months, and haven't even read it yet. But it warms my heart to see such life stories, where success seems to have had come out of nowhere, yet in reality it has been the perseverance, resolve, and commitment of the individual that had made possible the end result. It gives me hope for and faith in my own endeavors.

Perhaps, like Slinko wrote in a previous post, I just have to say 'screw it' and try one more time. Try to live the next 10 years with the experience I'd learned, and strive to walk my own road.

Yup.

Huh, I did not intent for that to turn into yet another wall of text, but I guess it did...

To give a visual idea of my earlier point, here's one way I might have handled a moment that happens in the next update.

The original is here: https://tgchan.org/archive/tezakia/Images/Chapter%203/Quest%20181.png

For a fun bit of authenticity, I did this with a few caveats:

This isn't Tayza's modern design. Rather, it's the original image done with the knowledge that it does eventually become Tayza. (I would say this is closer to tayza's end-of-quest design)

2009 me didn't know what a smoother was, so I didn't use it here. I also mimicked the way 2009 me drew fur. It's worth noting that I didn't actually start drawing fur this way until chapter 9 (I believe the very first image of Dilia's normal form gave me the idea to do it that way). But who let details get in the way of fun?

This is still done at DR-speed, meaning don't spend too long on the shading. Very simple shading to give a rough idea of shadows, nothing fancy.

---------

One thing 2019 me would have done is put more of Tezakia in darkness. Dark is spooky! But the original spends very little time in dark areas, and the time it did spend was usually in total darkness (black). A modern version would likely go with a darker environment, but still bright enough to not be doom 3 (do I get a prize for making such a timely reference?).

I'd have kept some areas bright, like the entire command building (explored in chapter 1) and the MEDICAL ROOM specifically. That area acts as a sort of base of operations later on. In contrast, the building Amiel explores in chapter 3 is really broken down, and it'd make sense for a lot of lights to simply not work anymore.

...It'd make sense for none of the lights to work anymore, but we can assume the ki-jaara did some amount of upkeep. In fact, it would totally be in character for Tayza to purposefully keep the place dim but not black specifically so she can enjoy the hunt.

128907

THE RAMBLING CONTINUES.

Here we talk about the elephant in the room: The fact that the TGchan version of Tezakia is not an exact copy of the original.

Tezakia is the only quest on tgchan that gained the benefit of not being a rough draft. When we made the conversion to the webpage version, I was given a rare opportunity to fix things up a bit. Of course, I did said fixing circa 2011, so it's not quite the makeover I'd be able to give the quest now.

In the image you see three versions. At the bottom is the original Lifejournal post. In the middle is the modern TGCHAN webpage version. And on top is the FLASH VERSION. Let's take a moment of silence for the broken images in the original.

....

Okay. The flash is, in general, the original quest with some of the text cleaned up. The TGchan one, however, made some slightly more noteworthy adjustments:

All the weird scratch-mark nipples I drew in 2009 were replaced with actual simple C-nipples. I wanted Tezakia to be adult, but I was too shy/afraid to draw actual nipples so the scratchmarks were a weird stopgap solution. I felt this was too... distracting... so a more nipple-friendly me gave everyone the nipples they deserve.

The TGchan version has more direct dialog. Trying to be like RubyQuest (which used dialog sparingly), Tezakia has very little talking until it finds its own voice around chapter 8 or 9. To help the early parts of the quest feel a little less 'slinko failing to be rubyquest', the TGchan version has more actual dialog.

In generally it replaced indirect dialog. "Amiel says she's okay." -> "I'm okay, I'm fine."

Little personality bits were added too; The image shows one such case. "Why's the door locked!?" helps convey the sense of panic Amiel's feeling, letting you get a mood for the text much earlier than the original.

Most of the changes are minor like this and almost not worth talking about, but there was one 'george lucas' style change possibly worth mentioning.

In the original and flash versions, Amiel and Sekani start using the L word pretty early. This is because Tezakia was supposed to be a 4 chapter quest. The flashes were made as the chapters completed, so they too had this assumption. I figured I didn't have time for a slow-burn romance.

But the TGchan version is fully aware how long the quest is. Because of that, Amiel and Sekani still get flirty and sleep together rather quickly, but the L word takes much, much longer to show up (I believe the TGCHAN version saves it for the end of chapter 8).

Because of this, I had to make one actual proper change to one image(beyond the nipple thing). I honestly forgot where it was, but there's a scene in the original where Sekani did... something... and Amiel responded lovingly. It felt a little out of character originally, but became rather jarring with the slower romantic buildup!

So one of the images was edited to give Amiel a different reaction that was more in character and made more sense for where their relationship was in the newer setup.

Now you might be going 'Golly! Even though half the images are gone I'd rather read the original and not deal with all these changes!!!!'

You shouldn't. The above is the only noteworthy change. Everything else is the same in both versions, the original is just slightly sloppier at telling it.

I think if you made the mouth a tad longer and made the eyes less detailed and more 'gash'-looking, you would probably nail a pretty surreal look not dissimilar to the original look.

Imo, the thing that seems to make them surreal is the slightly-off proportions that trigger the uncanny valley. The new pic is very menacing, but the proportions are too accurate to really give the viewer the feeling that something is wrong.

Idk, this is just my two-cents.

SEKANI IS SO COLD.

-------

Today's topic: Love!

Wait no come back I didn't mean it.

Okay I actually did mean it but you're too far in to quit now. That's how I getcha.

Amiel was the primary antagonist for... let me just count real quick...

22 images. About 5 updates.

Back then I had a hard time saying 'no' to suggestions, if you can imagine such a thing! The decision not to Bad End the quest when Sekani complimented her tits set the quest on the PATH of love and romance.

We didn't have democracy and choices back then though so nobody knew that yet not even me.

I always intended for Amiel to be Sekani's friend, but I was ill-prepared for how much the suggestors would enjoy teasing her. And how much I would let them get away with it.

So things escalated, and escalated even more, until we reach this image with them both sharing a blanket while naked. My modern art style lets me make Sekani way more poofy than he was in the original (which is to say, not at all), though the overall differences are minor since nowadays I'd keep the simplicity of the image for the sake of the joke.

but the blushu though. I had not yet grasped the true power of blushu.

Put on the path of romance, I looked at that whole '4 thread test quest' thing and realized I wouldn't have a lot of time to mess around with setting up their relationship. The end result is they jump into things insanely quickly (though the TGCHAN version very slightly smooths this out).

The moment Amiel reciprocated taught me a lesson that stuck with me to this day: suggestors don't want romance. They want to be teased. Never admit feelings, never hold hands. Leave it up in the air, they love that stuff!

Astute readers might be looking for an amused emoji to respond to that paragraph with, considering all the feeling and holding in Dragon Romance. But like, 'romance' is literally in the name there. Also I since learned from a certain sad cat comic that there is absolutely a limit on how much teasing people will put up with. Eventually something has to actually like, progress.

Doing a romance quickly is certainly doable, but 2009 me didn't quite have the knowhow to pull it off. The end result is a relationship so clunky I'm still deciding if they're together or not in the sequel. Kinasa... Okay we can't get ahead of ourselves we're still in chapter 2. Pin that on the board, or pintrest, or whatever you kids do to remember stuff nowadays.

Siri, tell me how kids remember stuff.

See? Teasing!

Tezakia didn't have anywhere near as many silly faces as my later works, and the ones it has are considerably more subdued. In general the characters stay 'on model' much more in Tezakia than in later quests by me.

You would think the reason for that is Tezakia ostensibly being a 'horror', while everything since has fallen into the 'sometimes romantic comedy' genre (except that one time I did a cirr quest, whatever it was called. You'd think I'd know, being its creator).

:retcon_venji_3: "I get it!"

oh god it's you

This is about Tezakia so if you could just...

... ok i think she's gone. Where was I...

Basically see the earlier discussion on majibeast and art to see what happened when I'd go 'off model'. Anyway, Sekani's actions in chapter 2 are weird in hindsight. Tezakians don't see nudity as sexual, and even back then he commented as much... but you can only do so much to stop suggestors (who are largely human) from making the face Sekani made above at the thought of naked lian goodness (Or naked bird goodness? I'm not judgin').

Speaking of lian goodness!

Amiel was my first proper female character in a story (klissa and the ralians are older, but they were little more than basic ideas and character designs vs Amiel who actually had to like, Do Stuff).

Because she was the one I cut my lady-writing teeth on, she ended up being arguably the weakest main character in the quest. In many ways she tried to be the "remove the 'female' from 'female character'" character, but giant globs of 'GIRL!' fell on top of her, leading to things like blushing lots and being drawn cute more than she was drawn being cool.

Contrast her to Ceri, written years later. Ceri is feminine, but 90% of DR would be the same if she was a boy. Her gender is only one of many notes in the melody of her character.

This is less true with Amiel, to the point that Retcon Quest genderflipped her and the result was someone with no character.

:retcon_venji_2:

Yes apparently you're relevent to Tezakia somehow in this one specific discussion congratulations now sit down please.

:retcon_venji_5:

Anyway. Despite Amiel's flaws as a character, she's near and dear to me. Writing her taught me a lot, like how I should probably wait a bit before having characters use the word 'love' on each other. It is through her that I would learn to write fan favorites like Tayza or...

>10 years is a long time, huh?
In a way, yes. But also not. You get older, time starts feeling shorter and shorter, and sooner than later ten years have passed and you look back thinking 'that was fast'.
But it doesn't matter how long a span of time is, how many years you spent doing something, all that matters is what you see when you look back. And I should hope that when you look back, you see the empire of quests and collection of worlds you have shaped and wrote, the many hearts and minds that have touched and been touched by your adventures.

You've a rich, storied history behind you friend, and that is worth so much more than I can quantify.

One thing I would like to do in DR is talk to Siphon about Mr. Ilan. Siphon did asked if we remembered something perfectly that didn't happen during the secret password conversation with her, and I want to tell her that we did when we somehow knew Mr Ilan's real name as Euia even though we never were told his real name. Mr. Ilan said we weren't supposed to even know what his real name was. I want to see how Siphon reacts to this phenomenon.

TLDR: SLISSA QUEST OMEGA, a hard reboot, begins in a couple days. DR-GAIDEN, a series of side-stories with the HOARD MEMBERS, starts next week.

--------

I could ramble about it for 20 paragraphs, but I think I'll keep it short.

DR-GAIDEN: This is simple. I'm gonna do a simple and easily-drawn side thing for DR so my patrons aren't left in the dirt while I do a personal project (Slissa). It's going to follow the hoard members instead of Ceri directly, though she's likely going to introduce the thread and might show up as an NPC. The thread is canon, but I'm going to try to make it not Required Reading for folks who just want to follow Ceri's story. But hopefully you'll want to read it anyway cause I have some fun stuff planned!

---------
SLISSA QUEST: Originally meant to be my Magnum Opus (as i ignore the advice i literally wrote in the 'how to quest' wiki page), it's getting 'demoted' to a normal quest and actual-properly rebooted.

The original 2013 slissa quest (now known as SLISSA QUEST BETA) was a weaker showing than I liked, among other things holding me back at the time. It did about 1/2 the plot it was supposed to do, ending thread 1 early.

the 2018 quest, now known as SLISSA QUEST GAMMA, had the ambitious goal of keeping BETA canon and trying to both continue the story as well as sort of restart it.

The problems with this approach became immediately obvious. For one thing: I wrote myself into a corner in BETA, and this problem was inherited by GAMMA keeping BETA canon.

It was also impossible to get myself to work on GAMMA because it required a huge amount of effort, and my desire to work on it was hurt by the corner I was written into and realizing I split my audience between those who read SQ-Beta and those who hadn't.

So... I'm doing a hard reboot. We're throwing it all in the trash and starting over. Here's the main things to know:

-SQ-BETA and SQ-GAMMA are no longer canon. We might revisit some of the events, but almost certainly in different contexts. I'm going to do my best to minimize how much I repeat myself.

-This will still just be called 'slissa quest', but I'll refer to it as SLISSA QUEST OMEGA. If this attempt fails, I won't make a 4th try. It's now or never.

-The art and writing will be toned down. I think way more people would want slissa finished than would want it to get halfway and die.

-There will be less shading. There will be plenty of images that won't have any shading at all, though the 'colored light' effect will be retained from previous versions.

-Said shading will be soft shading. Soft shading's way easier than cell-shading for me.

-AQR is going to help so we might end up having shading anyway. The above is what will happen under my own power, though.

-I will no longer be trying to put a background in every image. My other quests save a lot of work by keeping the background plain, and that's going to come over to SQ to help me not die. The BG won't be white or anything, though.

-The writing will be less perfectionist. You might not even notice this one, but behind the scenes I can spend hours rewriting a single paragraph until I'm happy with it. I'll be trying to avoid that and shooting for 'good enough' as I usually do with DR.

-Lore focus is being toned down. I'm not Bitequest. Most of you don't even know who that is. My ability to Lore and Worldbuild is much weaker than my ability to write characters. SQ will still be more lore heavy than, say, Dragon Romance, but the focus is going where it belongs in a slinko quest: on the characters.

-The intro for SQ-GAMMA will be reused in SQ-OMEGA. The music's being touched up a bit, but it's otherwise the same intro. If you saw it in GAMMA, you won't lose anything by skipping it this time. Or maybe watch it again for the improved music~

-The Creator is switching from an implicit prequel to an explicit one. The end of Creator made the connection very obvious, so it was silly of me to downplay it in SQ proper. Reading The Creator isn't required, but doing so would give you better context for some things.

------

And that's it. Slissa Quest Omega might be awkward for a while, but these changes will greatly improve the odds of me finishing thread one, and once we're past thread one, the weirdness with SQ-BETA and SQ-GAMMA stop mattering.

let's say gamma was a test run, with a bad idea attached. I shoulda done a hard reboot to begin with.

I didn't do this lightly, I should note! Scholars will argue for years on if this counts as breaking my 'never abandoned a quest' gimmick, but...

I think if nothing else, choosing this over 'abandoning SQ as a grand idea too large in scope for a slinko already having to do DR for money' was the right decision, because the idea behind sticking with things is my desire to give people a satisfying ending, something we see far too many projects fail to do.

It's probably for the best that I downplay that 'gimmick' nowadays.

For years I clung to it as the one thing I could be proud of that nobody could prove wrong. People can go 'your writing is bad' or 'you draw bad', but it's hard to argue every quest getting to the end... or it was.

Partly because it became less 'fact' and partly because I have so many more things to be proud of nowadays, I'm content to just say 'I try my best to finish every story' rather than 'I will literally never fail to do so'

because it's the trying that matters~

On the contrary, i think that DR feels like it has a fuckton of lore that is just subtle and a tad vague, like Dark Souls lore. Idk what it is, but you seem to be pretty good at making "phantom lore." Hell, just have us (the collective) start theorycrafting and then just use your favorites (i have theorized that many a modern drama has done this very thing to keep the writing fresh).

>>129613
Holy shit! DR/patreon is your only income!? You need to write a proper book or publish something! (or at least invest in some stocks or something, idk :P) Part of me feels like it was kind of irresponsible to make this your sole livelihood (appeasing a fickle audience just seems like it is doomed to eventually fail), but more than that I have to respect you for not only (presumably) following and sticking to your dreams, but also being as successful as you are (unless you are homeless or starving. in that case we can send help).

Apologies for my lateness, I got IRL stuff going on. But that's irrelevant. If you don't mind I'd love to take advantage of that lore offer now, just a couple basic questions so I don't clutter poor Slinko's thread as I tend to:
Are there any particularly glaring cultural or biological differences in Duduk opposed to humans?
Are Duduk's secondary arms fully posable/functional?
Is the diet comparable to humans? Any strange intolerances/nutritional needs?
Do the triple-pupil eyes grant any special visual acuity?
Are their senses comparable to humans?
How intelligent are they?
What's the median lifespan?

That wasn't short at all. Hopefully you like sharing lore as much as I like learning it. We'll say that this is on-topic because Siphon is a Duduk and therefore this has pertinence to DR.

Lemme try to knock these out.

1. The big thing is that duduk have an unusual gender setup going on, which also affects their social structure. Basically, there are two types of female duduk — the more common, passive, fertile kind, who are physically smaller than males, and the less common, aggressive, infertile kind, who are physically larger. In addition, males are dramatically less common than either of these. As one might expect, the basic social family-ish unit reflects the imbalanced gender ratio, with one male having more or less a harem of females (of both kinds).

2. Yes.

3. Probably? I have a vague notion they might prefer somewhat more meat in their diet than humans, but they're still omnivores, and (perhaps as a bit of a setting conceit) the various races from their setting are all roughly tuned to the same sort of environmental needs.

4. Nah they basically just look neat.

5. Probably close enough? They likely have a noticeably better sense of smell, I guess.

6. Human-level-ish, I'd assume?

7. Human-ish. However it's worth noting that the tech in their native setting routinely allows for significant improvement here (if not indefinite extension).

I don't think I've contradicted anything I've said previously about them in these answers, but if I did I'm sure someone will point that out.

So AQR has made it his mission to keep SQ's art from falling to the mundane 'normal quest art' level employed by DR, and this has so far often lead to him redrawing images.

I tell you this not just to avoid taking the credit for someone's hard work, but to say this: Tyrsis wasn't originally intended to be staring at her butt.

So things have been slow, figured I'd talk too much about it.

It's a combination of getting a new PC set up (with some fun* shenanigans therein), and part of it is ...I guess the kids call it 'self care'?

Normally when I have depression periods or bad sleep periods, I just power through and make an update even if it's bad. Doing this a lot caused me to really kind of hate making updates, and after a while I lost the will to force them out (which is why DR8 ended early)

So for the next while, I'm going to just do updates as I feel like doing them, not pushing myself nearly as hard. This means everything is slow, but I greatly reduce the overall stress and limit 'breaking points'.

Over time, I hope to get back into the flow and for things to pick up, but for now I'm going to take it a bit easy and focus on moving forward at all, rather than moving forward quickly.

>NOTICE STRANGE MUTATIONS
Hmm? Sekani's always had these.

...Hasn't he?

-----------------------------------------

I'm in less pain and on anti-biotics so let's do one of these while I recover.

Today we'll talk about mutation, a theme that shows up in all slinkoquests except Slissa (spoilers?).

In Tezakia, the idea of slowly mutating into a monster was meant to add a bit of tension (and body-horror?) to the super spooky horror quest. Part of this theme was stealing taking inspiration from Ruby, and its use of the suggestor format as a source of fear.

In ruby, this was done by having her do the opposite of what was suggested. In tezakia, fake suggestions were inserted. The image right after this inserted >Kill Amiel, which obviously nobody was suggesting at the time.

Of course, some of the suggestors ran with this, causing the spooky moment to become a source of comedy. This... this happens kind of a lot in this quest.

As you may know, by the end of the quest it was less 'look out for monsters' and more 'let's be awesome monsters together!'. Amiel would also get a transformation, but I'll talk about that segment later.

Sekani would get more mutated as certain story events happened, and he'd start to feel slightly unhinged. Majicka messes with the mind, and while that aspect got downplayed later, it's a canonical piece of the majibeast/ki-jaara puzzle.

-----------------------------------------------

I'll spend a moment discussing this theme in other slinkoquests, since now's a good time.

Venji's had a couple, going from tozol/indahl hybrid* to tozol/indahl/birb to just... birb? I guess? In this case the choice was a little more meta-inspired, wanting to distance Venji from the quests she is a hybrid of so she can be more of her own thing.

Slissa Quest is the one exception, in this and other ways. It's the most grounded (teehee)-- Kliss never learns magic and never mutates into something else. She's powerless by design, acting as an antithesis to Ceri and Venji (and originally vs Sekani and Beyond Lunch). Because of this, her design is largely unchanged since her incarnation, outside of adjustments to how Slissas are drawn in general. But! You can squint and see the theme in Tyrsis! He was originally a slissa (because ketzas didn't exist yet), and now he's a fluffsa!

In Dragon Romance, Ceri's only really gone through one mutation (ignoring minor changes in design over time). But she's had plenty of 'designing monsters is fun' as seen in her AQUATIC FORM and various FAUX DRAGON FORMs. And of course she got a redesign in thread 5, and there's presumably a design waiting for when she deals with her inner dragon one way or another...

But yeah. You may know of people who have 'OCs' and like to completely redesign them from time to time. This is ssoorrrt of like that, making adjustments to keep designs fresh. But it's also just kinda fun to take a design and monster it up a bit. Sometimes it really is more fun to be awesome monsters together.

For reasons, I'm going to go over a few more things real quick.

First off: The Jiniki Effect.
When Amiel first met Jiniki, they were roughly the same size! But as the quest went on, Jiniki would be drawn (or her sprite placed) such that she was smaller and smaller, until reaching her final size around chapter 11. I'm not sure why it played out like that, but it might have to do with learning to draw Jiniki over time.

Second: Amiel in danger!
Amiel is the only slinkoquest character that had a real, legitimate chance to die. There was a second PATH (as it were) planned out where Sekani would start losing his fight with majicka and sanity. Saving Amiel required specific steps taking in a specific way (it was more strict than I might be nowadays!), but the suggestors knocked it out of the park, ensuring she'd live to see the rest of the story.

Jiniki almost died a couple times, but unlike with Amiel I had not prepared myself for Jiniki dying and when it came up, found I didn't have it in me to actually go through with it.

So if anyone dies in a slinko quest, their death was likely considered an option since very early on.

Tayza Saves The Day
Speaking of when Amiel almost died, Tayza showed up, bringing a breath of fresh air to the quest and marking the moment Tezakia found its voice. After chapters of DRAMA and EMOTIONS, Tayza's no-nonsense fuck-you attitude was exactly what the story needed, exactly when it needed it. It's no wonder she became a fan-favorite!

Chapter 11 is really really long
Up until chapter 11, I was cutting a lot of ideas to keep Tezakia on pace to end with chapter 10. When Tezakia failed to end there, I decided to see what'd happen if I cut a much, much smaller percent of my ideas. The end result is a 340 image monster that no slinko thread would ever approach again (DR caps at about 240)!

But it was also one of the strongest chapters, since all of a sudden all my character moments and slower calmer moments weren't being cut for 'time'.

DR dials this idea to 11 (teehee), but it's this thinking that lead many of my quests to be heavily character focused, and a bit on the slow side.

Iiji the bug with a big butt
Iiji's design in tezakia was a little doofy, but her original design was extremely doofy! It was shown at the end of chapter 11, getting changed when folks laughed at the final boss.

That's about it for now. Stay tuned for the final part!

Ten years ago today, I began this 'little test quest', full of excitement and optimism about this brand new medium of shared storytelling.

But there was one thing I regretted. In chapter 12, I made a song intended for a climactic cutscene showing Sekani vs Iiji. Because I wanted to let the audience participate in this moment, I scrapped the cutscene and instead made one for Amiel vs Iiji a bit before it.

For many years I was sad that I hadn't gotten to make that cutscene...

...until now.

From November 5th, 2009 to November 5th, 2019, Tezakia has had a place in my heart, part of The First Great Revival.

To celebrate it, I worked for 3 weeks with 4 people (2 of which turned the limited DR cutscene engine into a real monster that can handle just about anything) to create something worthy of Tezakia, worthy of those 10 years I spent here.

There's a bug in redirections where any sub-route on tezakia, such as https://tezakia.net/kusaba/ fails to redirect.
The index route, ie. https://tezakia.net does redirect ok. Any sub-route on tgchan.org redirects fine as well.

This is a problem because the existing users don't visit the index route often and thus won't actually be redirected from tezakia to questden.

You just recapped the quest that put you on the map, good sir! What are you going to do next?
"I'm going to Disney Land!"

For real, what's the plan after Dragon Romance?

Thanks for all the kind words! I'm glad all the work and stress resulted in something we can be super proud of.

The vague quest plans are as thus:

DR-G running alongside SQ

Koror running alongside DR proper

Once either DR or SQ is finished, I'll begin work on Final Venji

Once every single quest is complete, I'll begin on Tezakia 2 and run it by itself

Tezakia 2 is in my mind as my 'final quest', and it's set up to sort of put a closing mark on the ~15 or so years of questing it'll be at that point.

But, I'm not going to say that for certain because I might get there and realize I'm not done yet.

But for now, that's the plan.
