His own voice sounds like it's coming from miles away, the words hardly find the way to his mouth.

"...the doctor.. He was... He did it... the machine..."

He can't make one step further. He can't even crawl anymore. His vision fades away and the sound dies with the weird voices still echoing inside his head.

"...ust a little longer. You can d..."

"HAVE A NICE DAY."

And then...

Tiak blinks. It feels like he's underwater only that he's being dragged around. And someone keeps talking to him. Hey, that looks like the elevator ceiling hatch.

"...ou weigh a ton, seriously. Specially with all the crap you're carryi..."

Tiak slips into the embrace of subconsciousness again, images of soft breasts with frightening grins floating around.

Tiak blinks again. He's being introduced inside of something... like a closet... A pod?

The voice sounds closer this time... Zira? Even in his poor state, Tiak can dectect a hint of sadness in her voice.

"...ou should be fine now. I'm just sorry it has to be this way and I can't say properly good bye, but at least I know that you'll be fine."

"I'm sorry I had to lie to you, but it had to be that way. I know you can't hear me right now, but you did a damn fine job. Most people wouldn't have survived to what you've gone through, and even less would've succeeded. But you did it."

He feels the touch of her fingers over his torso, opening his jacket and searching through his pockets.

"I hope you can forgive me, but I do this for your own good. For all the universe's good."

And then the door over his head closes. And Tiak finally can rest.

The emergency signal was detected by the Condor 23, a Maurian battle cruiser patrolling the quadrant.

The rescue shuttles fished out the survivors in their escape pods and salvaged anything possible from the Sparrow wreckage, which wasn't much, to be honest.

Head of Security Tiak Belint was interrogated, and the evidence stored in his PDAs and cameras played a decisive role in the outcome of the incident.

The Republic Juridical Bureau couldn't just deny it, the late Dr. Labras was found guilty of conspiracy, treason and murder.

The Republic couldn't afford to let the scandal get to the public. A famous scientist going on a killing spree, murdering officials, working in secret projects with a private corporation, plotting to blame the Ziranée for the murder...

They covered it up. They threatened and bribed the survivors. They invented a tale of heroic survival and inter-species cooperation. How the brave men of the Sparrow 12 survived during the massive malfunction of all their systems. Of course, the public loved it.

The Alpha Machine was utterly destroyed in the explosion of the ship. Irreparable. And not even a single particle of the Alpha creature could be saved.

The search through Labras' personal files at his home and his laboratory gave no positive results. All his computers were found clean, everything deleted. His reports, burnt to ashes. All the scientific personal responsible of the discovery disappeared without a trace.
Any data about how to duplicate the Alpha Machine, or the coordinates of the planet where the creature was found disappeared with the plans, and Labras' valuable brain.

The Alpha Machine production would have to start from zero. It could take centuries to build it again. It could take forever.

The survivors were publicly treated with all honors, and the crew members and passengers that perished during the flight would be remembered as heroes who sacrificed themselves to protect the lives of the other souls that went in the flight.

Mok, the barman, died unconscious in the Infirmary bed, nobody bothered to take him to one of the evacuation pods.

Nobody knows for sure what happened to Colonel Keranos. He wasn't in any of the evacuation pods, but nobody saw him in the last hours before the escape. What stopped him from escaping with the rest of the survivors will remain a mystery for the ages.

The presence of the passenger that called herself Yery was covered up by the government, outright denied. For all purposes, she never existed.

The amazing story of the Maurian survivors that fought the adversities along Ziranée diplomats multiplied the number of Ziranée and Maurian sympathizers in both sides of the conflict. The incident became an example of how the different civilizations could peacefully cooperate to achieve common goals.

The truce grew stronger, and Queen Nayria V'yrian became a living symbol of peace and prosperity. With time, this would turn the V'yrian house into one of the most powerful houses of the Ziran Empire, and Queen Nayria would become one of the most influential individuals in the galaxy.

What happened to the passenger called Zira?
It's a question without an answer. A brief investigation revealed that the real ambassador Zira Niadar is a 178 years old lady, retired from her duties and peacefully enjoying her last years in an orbital spa near Abrona 6.

The passenger pretending to be her avoided the controls in the Condor 23 and managed to escape without being interrogated when it landed in Tinosa II. Her real identity, and who was she working for remain a mystery.

But not everything was congratulations and pats on the back in the Republic. The people wouldn't believe that the ship went to hell by itself. They needed a scapegoat. Someone to blame.

And they found the perfect one in Tiak Belint, Head of Security. His work in the ship was considered irregular, to say the least. His fellow crew members described how he abused his authority, stole official property, was responsible of illegal use of force, and was ultimately unable to prevent the destruction of the ship and the death of most of the people in the ship.

He was charged guilty, striped of his rank and expelled from the Maurian Security Forces.

But even when they blamed him publicly, the MSF couldn't deny that a situation that could have easily drifted into war, did had such a satisfactory outcome thanks to Tiak.

No other allegations or penalties were applied to him, and even when he wouldn't be allowed to work in any official charge anymore, they granted him a more than generous bonification that would allow him to live like a king for years.

So, Tiak pondered, things weren't so bad. He was young, rich, and had a royal invitation to spend all the time he wanted in the palace of the house Yrian, of the Ziranée.

The money would eventually run out, yeah. But after all, there was a universe of possibilities out there. And he was finally free to explore them.

Zira obviously works for some intelligence faction, and I'd expect they'll be keeping tabs on you in case you do something rash that risks their interests.
If you'd like to meet Zira again then it shouldn't be that hard to unobtrusively signal that intent to those watching you; depending on how well known her mysteriousness is you might be able to outright put out word that you'd like to see her.

Assuming, of course, you do want to see her.
