Oh, and as long as her brain is intact you don't even have to feel bad about killing her. You can bring her back later. Might be in a couple of months, but you'll be able to do it.

This is probably the better way to do it. (I mean we could give her the keys---they're useless with the door they control being on fire and our knowledge of the back passages---but the last thing we want now is more people running around getting in position to stab us in the back at the least opportune moment.)

Not that I entirely support something quite so, uh, pre-crime of a security official, but that's quite the consensus up there and a Zira/Yery catfight might end up with the wrong one unconcious. :V

Tiak tells Yery that he's going to give her the keys, but then he takes Zira to the side to tell her his plan. She doesn't seem to be bothered by the crime included in it, and only disagrees about the robot.

"It's going to take a while to bring it here and we don't have the time. I can do it myself."

And she does it, before Tiak has the chance to reply. In a moment she's climbing the vents, then she's inside, then opening the shaft at the other side and ZAP!

She returns with the computer parts and hands them to TIak, with a "Here you go!"
Tiak ponders.

"We should get the corpse out of there so they can resurrect her in the future. Or at least get her... head."

Zira shakes her head.

"Nope. Not gonna happen."

"What?"

"I'm not going to be carrying the corpse of that bitch everywhere. And I'm not going to cut her head off and take it as a souvenir. You're free to do it, though."

Tiak frowns.

"You know I can't."

Zira shrugs.

"THAT'S TOO BAD! Now, shouldn't we get going to the Mainframe room or something?"

With Zira's help, Tiak makes his way to the Lower Deck, feeling more and more out of it with each step he takes. He's starting to feel rather sleepy.

>>279686

She's dead, Tiak was just in front of her, just at the other side of the barrier. Zira pretty much blew her face off.

"I suppose she won't get any more dead when life support fails, and the doc was the only one who could work the resurrection chamber anyway." --Starts Tiak "So, mind telling me who you really are? It's not important, I'm just curious."

Zira sighs.

"Didn't we talk about this already, I'm Zira, I've been keeping you alive for most of the flight, isn't that enough for you?"

"Oh, I just was saying because I'm going to die horribly anyways." --Adds Tiak.

"Oh, will you shut up, you drama queen?"--sighs again Zira. "You aren't going to die, we just need to get you to one of the escape pods. Those things have cryo-beds, remember? You'll be fine."

Zira interrupts his speech, dismissing it with a gesture of his hand.

"Tiak, stop being melodramatic for a minute and focus. You know like, save that dying breath of yours to actually solve the situation."

"O-ok, right."--Tiak remembers the Captain's words. "Uhh... Open!"

Tiak asks Zira to go down herself, because he's not really feeling so well. At all. She agrees and jumps down with the two computer parts.
Tiak peeks down the hatch to see the mainframe room. It's a mess, cables, monitors, complicated machinery everywhere, sparkling electricity and plasma energy. The control monitor displays nothing but error messages. And on the central console, a big, shiny red button, with the message "Emergency Broadcast Signal" scribbled under it.

"Alright." --Says Zira. "Where do I put these?"

Tiak takes a look at Mongro's diagrams. They're overly complicated pictures of diagrams and plans. But then he notices something he didn't see before

This seems to be pretty straightforward. The diagram is oriented the same way that Zira is standing. On the wall to her left, there are two blue places that seem to correspond to the diagram's left corners. The central area has at least one of the triangle/square sockets (probably another on the back), and the terminal behind Zira looks like it has an open space. There may also be something on the bigger terminal. Ask Zira to check those spots and fit any clear matches between them.

No. 280291 ID: 1854db

>>280193
Okay, the two blocky parts go on the console behind Zira, and the one with the arrow on it goes in that spot that's open on the pillar. Unless there's another empty spot that's obscured behind the pillar, in which case we're fucked because we don't have all the parts.

However, reviewing past threads it seems we found all of them. So that should be that.

Following Tiak's instructions, Zira puts the smaller piece in the slot on the strange flashing pillar, and the other one in the slot on the console behind her. The screen flickers and the error messages are cleared, and for a second, the entire ship shakes like an earthquake.

"I... *cough*... I think we've phased out of hyperjump." -informs Tiak.

"Time to press the big, red button, then." --Answers Zira.

And that's what she does. As soon as she slams her hand on the "Emergency Broadcast Signal" button, the screen displays a message that vanishes to quickly to be read, and a small humming noise can be heard all around the room.

"You think that worked?"

A robotic voice thunders all over the ship.

"EMERGENCY PROTOCOL ACTIVATED. PLEASE FOLLOW THE SECURITY PERSONAL INDICATIONS AND HEAD TO THE NEAREST EVACUATION POD AVAILABLE. HAVE A NICE DAY."

"It seems so!" --Coughs Tiak.

"Alright, time to beat it." --Says Zira. "Unless you want to do something else in here."

If there's any way to grab the security camera recordings to a PDA in a short timespan, do that.

Broadcast the plans for the alpha machine to everything. Spam, spam, spam the interplanetary comms network.

Also see how the automatic fire suppression is doing, and if the air processing might not actually get burnt down, but that's a lower priority. Tiak needs to get to a cryopod either way.

She interrupts him, shaking her head.

"The controls don't seem to work and I have no idea how use any of this shit! And you don't have time to figure it out!"

Before he can protest, she nimbly jumps out of the room and pushes him out. He's losing consciousness and getting more and more sleepy, the sound of the emergency system echoing in his head.

The emergency signal was detected by the Condor 23, a Maurian battle cruiser patrolling the quadrant.

The rescue shuttles fished out the survivors in their escape pods and salvaged anything possible from the Sparrow wreckage, which wasn't much, to be honest.

Head of Security Tiak Belint was interrogated, and the evidence stored in his PDAs and cameras played a decisive role in the outcome of the incident.

The Alpha Machine was utterly destroyed in the explosion of the ship. Irreparable. And not even a single particle of the Alpha creature could be saved.

The search through Labras' personal files at his home and his laboratory gave no positive results. All his computers were found clean, everything deleted. His reports, burnt to ashes. All the scientific personal responsible of the discovery disappeared without a trace.
Any data about how to duplicate the Alpha Machine, or the coordinates of the planet where the creature was found disappeared with the plans, and Labras' valuable brain.

The Alpha Machine production would have to start from zero. It could take centuries to build it again. It could take forever.

The survivors were publicly treated with all honors, and the crew members and passengers that perished during the flight would be remembered as heroes who sacrificed themselves to protect the lives of the other souls that went in the flight.

Nobody knows for sure what happened to Colonel Keranos. He wasn't in any of the evacuation pods, but nobody saw him in the last hours before the escape. What stopped him from escaping with the rest of the survivors will remain a mystery for the ages.

What happened to the passenger called Zira?
It's a question without an answer. A brief investigation revealed that the real ambassador Zira Niadar is a 178 years old lady, retired from her duties and peacefully enjoying her last years in an orbital spa near Abrona 6.

The passenger pretending to be her avoided the controls in the Condor 23 and managed to escape without being interrogated when it landed in Tinosa II. Her real identity, and who was she working for remain a mystery.

But not everything was congratulations and pats on the back in the Republic. The people wouldn't believe that the ship went to hell by itself. They needed a scapegoat. Someone to blame.

And they found the perfect one in Tiak Belint, Head of Security. His work in the ship was considered irregular, to say the least. His fellow crew members described how he abused his authority, stole official property, was responsible of illegal use of force, and was ultimately unable to prevent the destruction of the ship and the death of most of the people in the ship.

He was charged guilty, striped of his rank and expelled from the Maurian Security Forces.

But even when they blamed him publicly, the MSF couldn't deny that a situation that could have easily drifted into war, did had such a satisfactory outcome thanks to Tiak.

No other allegations or penalties were applied to him, and even when he wouldn't be allowed to work in any official charge anymore, they granted him a more than generous bonification that would allow him to live like a king for years.

So, Tiak pondered, things weren't so bad. He was young, rich, and had a royal invitation to spend all the time he wanted in the palace of the house Yrian, of the Ziranée.

The money would eventually run out, yeah. But after all, there was a universe of possibilities out there. And he was finally free to explore them.

THE END

Zira obviously works for some intelligence faction, and I'd expect they'll be keeping tabs on you in case you do something rash that risks their interests.
If you'd like to meet Zira again then it shouldn't be that hard to unobtrusively signal that intent to those watching you; depending on how well known her mysteriousness is you might be able to outright put out word that you'd like to see her.

Assuming, of course, you do want to see her.

Civilian life is for boring people. Time to find employment as a secret agent, Tiak.
