I head into the barracks. Beds, foot lockers, personal effects. Room's clear.

There's the armory. It smells like gunpowder and objective.

"It's just a lift?" Mitzi asks. "What if they stop it? I don't even know how to start it! They could trap us halfway up!"

"A broken dumbwaiter is not going to stop me."

This isn't even a proper elevator, just a box for guns and things. Gonna be a tight fit. Last chance to turn around or try something clever.

what if it has a Displacer missile?! you could have that go halfway and go off, making a huge opening to use.

you could always climb through the elevator shaft to be sneaky, and there's no risk of being crushed since you can punch through the elevator roof.

Yeah, don't actually start the elevator. Just punch a hole in the roof and climb up. That's assuming Mitzi can climb, though, and that you won't be making a terrible racket.

What's that, a fire alarm? Hmmmmmmmm... I wonder what kind of fire suppressant they have? Maybe the sound of the alarm would cover any noise you make climbing the elevator shaft.

FOOT LOCKERS! Bust those open real quick, should only take like 10 seconds. Mitzi can look through them as you crowbar each in turn. We're just looking for things that are immediately useful, of course.

Good plan with the footlockers. However, I recommend we dispense with the elevator entirely, and simply tear open the top and climb up the shaft. Who knows what kind of nerve gasses or Combat Foam canisters they could have in case someone tries to use it?

Send the elevator up with an IED, then climb up behind it.

Hey, let's not give the humans the advantage of knowing where you are so soon after you've gained it. You have too many holes in you to afford another face-to-face confrontation so soon. That is to say, make like a Jabberwock and shut up, lady.

Open the chute, without violence if you can; and ascend, tearing apart the lift if you must. Tell Mitzi to follow you and close the chute door after her.

I don't like the idea of just heading to the armor until we figure out where the soldiers went. it feels to much like a trap.

It may be that since containment has been breached on such a catastrophic level, they are evacuating so that they can activate the on-site thermonuclear warhead, stunning you long enough to bottle you. That's what I'd do, in this situation, with like a dozen elite troops splattered over the walls, and several other breaches currently running amok.

Tear open doors to elevator. Tear out roof of elevator. Climb to top of shaft. Tear open small peephole. Use weasel bar as mirror and scope out what you can. Maybe stick a tail or two through to get an idea of the room. At the first hint of attack, drop down the elevator shaft to avoid damage.

We decide further actions after gathering intel.

I open a few lockers and find little of value. Mitzi urges me on. They seem to make her uncomfortable.

There's several more grenades in the barracks. We could rig them into some kind of bomb to send up, if we really want.

The lift's door opens without any hassle at all.

It isn't, though it's clearly big enough for it. There's some scaffolding to discourage the attempt, but I can rip it out no problem.

I explain this to Mitzi. She says okay, but that if she built this, she'd add at least one blast door. I tell her it's smart of them to worry about explosions because after I escape I'm coming back to blow the entire place up with a huge bomb for being so consistently infuriating down to the smallest detail.

My eyes adjust in a way that makes my head hurt. There's one word visible only in infrared, the other in ultraviolet.

Try it on the computer first, then climb.

Try to multitask and get the drive in the computer quickly while doing everything else. If it was important enough to plant there, then it must be something urgent, so we can't wait until later. But we also don't want to fall behind and lose too much initiative.

Tell Mitzi to use MELANCHTHON as the username and TETIGISTUS as the password and put in the thumb drive and check its contents.

Mitzi tears out the door power, locking us in.

I give the words to the console. An audio file begins playing.

"I have no way of knowing who's listening," says a quiet voice.

"Oh shit, it's Marcus!" says Mitzi. Then it was him I heard before.

"Tethys... Tozol," continues the recording. "If this is you, if my transmitter worked correctly, if you understood, if you weren't killed or recaptured... then I suppose Murphy lays dead at my feet. I've already benefited from more than my share of dumb luck. After I read your file, I felt like I wasted a bunch of counter-suppress trying to wake you up. I guess we all underestimated you."

"Man, he sounds weird," Mitzi says. I say nothing.

"Near you, I've hidden a small device that will fit in a data port on this console. If I know anything at all about your kind, and maybe I don't, its location should be obvious. It will send a signal elsewhere that will locally blind the security system, open the shaft's blast doors, and start the lift. At the top is more firepower than even you could possibly use.

"In the much more likely case that I am speaking to a security team, you'd better fucking hope you've killed me by now.

"My name's Marcus Tibur. I am hunting you."

Hmm, is that thumb drive the device, or is that what had the message on it? If it is, then you need to look somewhere that should be "obvious for a tozol". How about that big gun?
