>Well... I got out of that fireball in one piece. However, this fella here was stuck in the corpse of the metal creature he was riding, so I couldn't leave him to die there.
>About the test, that turned out sour. Asgie found out that the competition was rigged, and raised hell over there. Wish I could see it. The general's been missing ever since.
>On top of that, wolves have been pillaging our town at night, decimating our food supplies and attacking people day after day. All we have left is fishing and farming. It's one hell of a plague, and Guardians are sitting ducks without their leader.

>He didn't seem too concerned about his mount's death. All he asked for was to retrieve his weapons from the place... they look like small hammers of sort. I don't know how could you defend yourself with something that small.
>As for the Guardians, the King has direct control over them now. He refuses to send them out to protect Arneth from beasts, though. But this just means that I've got something to do for a living at least.
>There have been rumors of a werewolf, or some other beast of sorts roaming around. I'm going to check this out tonight, once Asgeria's free to look over the wounded one while I'm gone.

Oh, he's... well, either from the future or you're in an isolated civilization that doesn't have his level of technology.

The 'hammers' are like... really powerful crossbows. A tiny bolt traveling incredibly fast comes out of the long end when you pull the switch by the short end. Don't mess with them though, you could seriously hurt someone.

Z:"What's the matter, Asgie?"

Z:"WHAT? Just exactly why would I?"
A:"Also, he blames the beasts on Kanes and you. The people... they claim he's cursed. We've got about 20 bloodthirsty men rushing right here to hand your butt to you. They'll be here any minute! Grab your shit, wake up the injured dude and let's go!"

We don't know enough about the local area. If you go to that lower peninsula you might be able to sneak out from under them, but that's the first place I would block off.

Go east just a bit and find a place to get off the boat into the forest. Go north from there skirting the edge of the mountains to avoid the road then ford the channel up north. If you can't ford the channel, just take the boat all the way around the coastline. Either way you probably want to avoid that bridge there. Nasty things bridges.

>If you are on the same level, you should already be aware that time travel isn't possible.
>Yes, magic is the answer. I didn't ask directly because nobody from our land is supposed to know - as much as people here know nothing of what lies beyond the sea to the south. They think it's an ocean, but it's too small of a gap to be called one.
>Since you seem to know much anyway, I guess it's safe to explain myself. I'm on a mission here to warn the small group aware of the south land's existence, they don't know yet what's really going on down there. The Emperor went nuts and decided to ditch the research on sentient machines, turning his focus on those who utilize the force we were unaware of until lately.

>Sure, magic would get rid of most our problems, but I highly doubt this is the reason behind the Emperor's actions. Combining the power of science and the unknown, there would be nothing to stop him from laying his greedy hands on existence itself. As if declaring regime and wiping out the Outcasts wasn't enough, his hunger for power will sure end up in playing god. Thousands will die in process, as the wizards won't just hand over their knowledge gathered over hundreds of years.

>Our only hope in stopping it is letting the White Citadel know before it's too late. They're the only ones out here that know of existence of both sides and kept in touch with our state - until lately, that is. If any force can prevent the outbreak of a war or at least counter Zien, it's them.

It took you less than a night to get this far so that gives us an idea of your map's scale, and opens up our options a little. Do you know if the cliffs break to the northeast, where there might be beaches and tributaries carving valleys out of them that you could climb up?

When I'm in this situation I just go explore all over the place. Sometimes the best secrets can lie in the most unexpected places. But you be the judge of what we should do. When we talked with the man from the metal beast, he said he came from the south and needs to go to the north, but he wouldn't say anything else.

Asgeria:
"How would you feel if you were left in a foreign land with a mission, and nobody to help you?"
Kanes:
"It's okay, don't push yourselves. I may still be able to go on my own if it's too much to ask."
Asgeria:
"No way, I'm not going to deny you assistance if the matter's urgent enough. Could you please tell us how bad the situation is?"
Kanes:
"I'm afraid that... if I won't warn the right people soon enough, this place will be torn to pieces by war. Imagine hundreds of steel dragons like the one I came here in, dropping flame and destruction all over the place. Metal giants making mincemeat out of the few wizards you've got. And when they get their hands on magic, it's all over. They will be no place to run, as everyone will be enslaved for eternity."
Zariene:
"..."
>What should I do?
>I'm afraid of getting involved, and this shouldn't even bother me by one bit... I usually kill what they pay me to, as long as it's justified. But deep down, I wonder if these blades could make a difference?

Tsundere cop-out time. Say it can't be helped. Once Asgeria has her mind set on something nothing can stop her from doing it, and you're not going to leave her. You can devote yourself wholeheartedly to the cause later once you've had some time to think about it. Right now you've got a choice between being strung up as a murderer, living on this beach the rest of your life, or following him. Wait until you've got a cozy job offer to the north before worrying about leaving them on their own.

Polearms huh? Like halberds, poleaxes, warhammers, bills, pikes, spontoons, that sort of thing right?

Hm. Pikes, bills, halberds, and traditional spears are formation weapons mainly, though halberds are handy outside of a formation fight too.

Your weapon looks like a halberd-type with a design that emphasizes the bill of the halberd. That's a very good anti-infantry and a decent anti-armor weapon, but it looks like your design has an abbreviated hook, unless I'm mistaken.

Tell us about your armor and other weapons please.

Interesting. If a warrior is strong enough that the extra weight isn't an issue in extended field operations, then it would be quite worthwhile. Being able to convert to a mace and short poleaxe is great for fighting in tight quarters, like inside buildings for instance. The only downsides are the extra weight, the extra expense, and the added potential for the shaft breaking.

What of your armor?

>And somehow, this all gear isn't as heavy - much like Zarie's blades. Odan doesn't want to tell anyone what kind of materials he uses, though. But from what I've measured, it's less than a half the weight of regular steel. While I can't have all that on myself during a fight, it's not much of a problem when travelling.

Oh, he used advanced materials to solve the weight issues. The only metal I can think of with a strength-to-weight ratio like that is titanium. If he made it of that, then you've got some seriously expensive gear.

Titanium's great stuff. Light, strong, dent resistant and highly corrosion resistant, the only downside to it is that it is very energy-expensive to make. There are certain techniques required to get pure titanium from ore that require either advanced manufacturing abilities or painstaking small-scale work. Or a pre-existing supply of titanium, but even that would be hard to work into tools without a lot of experimentation and hard lessons learned.

Titanium is not a very forgiving medium, unlike steel or iron. Your friend Odan has my respect for being able to make weapons and armor from the stuff.

A good alloy of aluminium is a possibility since it would have tensile yield strength comparable to mid-quality steel. An alloy would be lighter than steel, but not as light as these weapons are.

Titanium is outright twice as durable. It is the most likely candidate right now. We can experiment with it later, if it matters.

Zariene, do you want the light on or off?

A quick rundown on the fairly simple system:
H - You know what.
S - -1 per turn, can't fight below 10, regenerated by rest
T - non-battle, trust for the orb
SPD - determines turn order, movement tiles per turn.
X LYY - Fighting skills. C is for close combat, R for ranged, M for magic(with color-coded elements).
ARMOR+X - X*10% damage reduction
WEAP+X - Adding guaranteed damage to respective skill.
Shield - Projectile resistance, and usually +10% in close range
Barriers - Resist element, amplify opposite. Unlimited use, turn on and off anytime. Only one at once can be enabled.
Gray mod - equipment effect
Blue mod - field effect
Red mod - magic effect

Damage rolls:
CLOSE - 1dC+WEAP
GUNS - 1d50 per every bullet that hits.
MAGIC - Dependent on the element and level used, can be affected by a barrier, unaffected by the next ones in line. (exploit it!)

Hit rolls:
(these are difficulty rolls!)
CLOSE - 1dC(-2 offhand) / diff enemy SPD
RANGED - 1dR (-2 offhand, +2 aimed) / diff distance
Aiming takes one additinal turn.
MAGIC - Does not miss, however it takes several turns to channel depending on the core and spell level you're using. Can fail if you're hit during that time.

You can ask to display the status sheets at anytime.
And don't you dare make me repeat it ever again. :3

"Gee, am I this creepy?" she giggles nervously
"Can I have the orb back?"
Asgeria:
"Sure, whatever.
But no matter what you achieved now, it's a stroke of luck either way."
Zariene:
"You just have to ruin it for me all the time, don't you?"

that's right. letting enemies escape with intel is bad. don't let it happen.

well, at the very least you need to get moving, since you let them escape.

Let them go, no need to kill anyone you don't have to. Get a move on.

this is ether good or VERY bad. if they went to get reinforcements then you will be swamped if they are just running then it's good.

>Did you assume we were going to what, build a village on this hell of a shore? We're heading north, that also means away from anyone stupid enough to chase us.
>And as far as I remember, the relation between mainland and Airan is still quite tense. Sending any force too far after us could have bad consequences.
>So, we're okay for now. There's a mining town a little from here on the mountain pass, we can catch some rest safely there, and keep heading for the capital city of Nekker, from where we should pretty easily find a way to reach our destination fast enough.

Hi Zariene. Did Odan make your swords out of titanium too, or did he pick another alloy? Do they rust?

alright, get to town before the enemy does. Don't forget to loot the corpse, of course.

they still know you are in the area and that they need reinforcements. if the general wont simply put a bounty in your head(wich he does not need to honor), he can hire mercenaries. a mutiny or even rumors of mutiny would undermine him tremedously.

if you can skip the mine town it would be best, they will ask around there and wont find any info on you.

meanwhile, LOOT EVERYTHING.

>He's obviously broke, and his sword is near worthless. But...
Zariene:
"Kanes, you may want to jump into this bastard's rags for disguise. No buts, you're weird enough even without that suit of yours."

Have Kanes take the guy's sword, too. Even if he isn't very proficient with it, it'll be good for him to have a weapon that doesn't run on ammo.

Just saying that if you run out of bullets it would be nice to have something besides your fists. Alright, ONWARD TO ADVENTURE...or that mountain town, I guess...

Here's some outlook on how you did, and some bonus quality art. You earned it.

Should I start attaching GXSCC'd music to the story, then? :D

Do what you want. If you feel like making some music who am I to stop you? I think it would be a nice little addition.

If I was good at composition, that is. (though there are a few themes for ZP I made) I merely thought of fitting existing tracks as done above.
