It started with the vision, so you should start with the vision.

Do familiars eat?

Finish the familiar first. Then ask Gramps if he had any old enemies and if he recognises the symbol you saw.

Start with the vision then the symbol and finish the familiar. Then you can ask about old enemies.

"I had a vision."

>"Oh? Tell me everything. Start from the beginning."

"Well... I was at the movies with dad. Suddenly I could sort of see two pictures on the screen. Not like a double image, but I could... sense another image there. I closed my eyes and when I opened them I could see the beach on the day Tony died. Only I could see stuff I didn't see then. Tony sort of jerked upright, and just walked stiffly into the water. And I could see this weird symbol carved on his forehead. What does it all mean?"

>"Hmm. Interesting. Give me a moment to think about this... Yes, yes, ok. It sounds like your secondary abilities are emerging. Sounds like post-cognition to me. It's been in the family on occasion. Tell me, did anything else happen?"

"I, uh, had my first period."

>"Yeah that makes sense. This sort of stuff does tend to coincide with puberty. Did you see anything else?"

"No, just Tony and the symbol."

>"All right. Now listen, postcognitive abilities can be a wee bit dangerous. Visions tend to leave you vulnerable, and can happen at unpredictable times. You don't want to get one during a ritual. You might be able to control it when you get a little older, but for now I strongly suggest we use a spell to suppress that ability."

"I don't know..."

>"Trust me, being postcog isn't the most pleasant ability in the world. People have gone mad seeing all the past horrors in the world. You'd be better off with suppression. Think it over."

"Ok."

>"For now we should finish this damn bird. However, I need to give you a quick lesson before we can do that. I would've liked to spend the day explaining this but I'll have to keep it short."

"Listening."

>"Good. You remember yesterday when we bound a soul to the familiar, and then restored it to life, right? Well, there is a third component that's needed to make something fully alive. To make it whole. The problem is that English doesn't really have a good word for it. It's "haftsusha", usually translated as 'spirit' or 'guardian'. So there's "tuaftia" or "soul", "hanku" or "breath" and "haftsusha" or "spirit"."

"How is that different from the soul?"

>"Ehhh, it's more like tuaftia and haftsusha together make up for what English word for soul means. It's hard to explain, especially in English. Tuaftia is like that part of your soul that is uniquely yours. It was created when you were born and it will travel to the Underworld when you die. Haftsusha is more of a hand-me-down. Some time after your birth a spirit will choose you as it's host and when you die it will eventually find a new host. The exact criteria that spirits use to pick hosts is a little hazy, but they do tend to stick to specific family lines. It's also connected to the person's name. That's where the tradition of naming children after famous ancestors comes from, by the way. The haftsusha carries you know, personality traits and stuff like that. Does this make any sense to you?"

"I... think so."

>"Ok good. Now, uh, usually when you're trying to resurrect someone you don't have to give a toss about the spirit, it'll find it's way back on it's own. Unless it's found a new host already, but that's besides the point. Where was I? The familiar, yes. Since we've essentially created a close imitation of new life, this thing here doesn't have a spirit yet. It's still incomplete. In order to attract a spirit you'll have to name him. But consider it carefully, the name will affect your familiar's personality. I'll try to assist in picking a name so you can choose aspects of it's personality, but it's no sure thing. I think we've covered everything I wanted to bring up today, do you have any questions?"

[Ok so, suggestion time. Give a name for the familiar, and a one-sentence description of the personality you'd like it to have. Remember to also vote if you'd like Tiffany's apparent post-cog abilities suppressed or not.]

Find out whether post-cog abilities can be useful first. Also, consider names that imply loyalty or deviousness for your raven. For a truly terrifying companion, choose Nevermore.

Name: Corax. Personality: Sarcastic and pessimistic, yes we will hate that damn bird.

Keep the post-cog suppressed for now. Poor little Tiff doesn't need any more traumatic stuff to deal with right now.
>>
No. 172156 ID: 1ac39d

i suggest she keeps it suppressed while her period is happening, that probably makes it more unstable.
name...... for some reason i can currently only think of using a angel from evangelion, Ramiel. maybe in a bit i'll think of something else.

supress the postcog, we can unsupress it when we are needing it, at a much later age.

for names, either Ra or Hoorus. he is to be talkative and proud like meowth
>>

Sounds like the Haftsusha is what gives certain family lines their necromantic power.

I'm thinking the bird should be called Allen. He will speak only in verse (switching styles perhaps), and have a tendency to be extremely verbose about relatively meaningless details. Or is that too specific? In general then, he'll be cheerfully morbid.

Suppress the postcog. Otherwise, we'll probably wind up seeing everyone's ugly past and getting all conflicted. Or it will happen at the worst time and fuck everything up.

I like >>172164's name and personality ideas. It's subtle but clever. Seconding Allen, extremely verbose and slightly morbid.

Do not suppress her abilities until we have more information on them; we should not be conducting any more heavy necromantic rituals over the next few days, so that should give us a chance to see what living with them is like before choosing one way or the other.

I like the direction, but POE is so much a better, traditional name for a raven, and Allen is too common a name in general. We might end up with Tim Allen not Edgar Allen

So I am going to advocate Poe, or possibly Quoth.

Because Quoth the Raven.

This might be getting a bit too meta, but while IC we've been told that the name attracts the spirit, OOC we were told to provide both an appellation and a personality description, which to me implies that we're getting to choose rather than having the GM twist our name around to somehow screw us.

I could be wrong on this, of course, but it seems to me that someone wildly out of line with our desires could be dug up for virtually any name. Presumably if we're likely to get totally screwed by our choice for some reason related to IC magical rules our helpful ancestor will advise us to that effect.

how about a moe raven? we could call it Nyoron. it would be clumsy, inquisitive and determined.

We should Suppress. Gramps has implied that it can be unsurpressed in the future, even if it may be a hassle, and that's good enough. We don't want it causing problems, so we can unsurppress when we're ready to master it.

>>172156
Ramiel is a good name. I support it. FYI, he's originally from Christian mythology, not Evangelion.

>I like the direction, but POE is so much a better, traditional name for a raven
You see traditional, I see unoriginal.
Also, somewhat stupid from an aesthetic perspective, it's not really evocative of any features for which Ravens are known, just of one single poet who happened to write a famous raven-related poem.

No. 172208 ID: 716eb0

>>172205
Why would you call out THIS idea for referencing a famous raven related poem, but not Allen? And the name isn't SUPPOSED to be original. We are attempting to draw spirits with traits we are looking for, right?

Besides, Quoth is an awesome name.

Allen is a decent name in its own right.

>And the name isn't SUPPOSED to be original. We are attempting to draw spirits with traits we are looking for, right?
Not necessarily. We get to choose both of these, thus making historical correlation irrelevant. Phonetic alignment is the only necessity, and it does not necessarily have to correspond directly name-to-name.

Anakin. After all, we are using dark power here, but our intentions were truly good at heart in the beginning. It would suit our cause.

Especially since we're likely to drive Tiffany over to the dark side before this is over... we've already tried to learn how to create an undead legion.

Hmm, I'm almost still torn between Bruce Willis and Charles Barkley, but now I see a new option! Clint Eastwood. It's like shopping for clothes!

Oh yeah, we can be all clever with poetic Poe references, but can you imagine a bird who's pecking the fuck out of a bug and asking it if it feels "lucky"? We need one liners galore here and Allen Poe just won't deliver. It can't deliver at all! Think of the children! Eastwood 2012!

If we name our raven after an actor, the only one of whom I can approve is William Shatner.

That said, probably a bad idea overall.

>>172208
I would prefer "Quethe" over "Quoth". If only because I prefer to be more oblique in my references, the possibility of Shatner above aside. Not a bad name idea, though.

I am not sure how you would pronounce Quethe. Like Quest but with a lisp?
Anyway, Quoth is a Discworld reference, so I like it on that basis.

Can there be fictional spirits? Wouldn't that just be the spirit of the author?

I suggest Prometheus, his personality generous, caring, and inexplicably paranoid.

And postcognition stays, because Tiffany is a Counter Suppressing Necromancer and a half!

Either Murder or Mulder. Possibly Mulder, because should your parents find out about your familiar, you can pass it off with a cover story (found lost/hurt in the woods, feed and nursed back to health). The name Murder is harder to explain away than Mulder.
