Remember that symbol. Burn it into your memory.

Tell Daddy that you're fine. You just feelt so good and safe that you feel asleep a little bit. You guess you're a bit more tired then you thought.

Next time you meet Gramps ask about that symbol. Also ask him about any enemies he might have made that would really have it in for him.

Act very embarrassed. That'll probably result in the avoidance of most awkward questions/suspicions.

It should be easy, because if that's not an embarrassing situation I've never seen one.

Oh god where's Julie when you need her? Should I take her to the hospital? I should take her to the hospital.

"How are you doing in there?"

>"Dad, I'm fine."

"You need to stay calm. It's just a period."

>"Dad, I know. They tell us this stuff at school."

"Really? That's good. So just uh... stay calm."

Stay calm yourself. Happens to every little girl at some point. If you start to panic and stuff it will just make it more awkward for her.

Don't worry so much! She can't possibly be hurt, or she would have been in pain long before you noticed what was happening. Yes, this was highly unexpected and shocking, but Tiffany seems to be taking it well and you need to act the adult here.

So. Practicality time. Does she need some sort of mysterious feminine product to solve this? Would Tiffany know? Do you have the appropriate supplies at home, or do you need to go buy them?

Pull your act together man. You have a father's duty to Tiff. OK, deep breath.

I don't know if she needs some weird woman-product. Maybe some of those pads they keep showing on TV? I don't know. So much blood. I always thought her mom would be around when this sorta thing happened. I suck at this.

Ok ok, focus man. Let's think.... She's all bloody and stuff. We'll need to do something about that before we ride home. Umm. Those pads? Do they sell them at the market or do I need to go to an apothecary? I don't know. I'll call Julie and ask her.

Goddamnit Julie isn't answering her phone. Guess she doesn't want to talk to me. Well fine. So, uh. The blood. Can't have her walking around with blood everywhere. OH GOD WHO THE FUCK DESIGNED WOMEN? JESUS CHRIST!

Clothes. Clothes! We just bought her that new outfit. Brilliant. She'll just put them on and no wait. She still needs those pads or tampons. Ok I did not just think of her putting tampons on. Pads. Where do they sell pads?

You should be able to find them at the market or a pharmacy. If you can't get them there then you could see if the lady at the goth store is in and ask her.

In the mean time Tiff could use tissue pappers as an emergancy solution.

Cunning plan: Find a woman in a uniform of some kind (someone working, so they can't run away). Accost them while slightly panicked and demand information on this topic/desperately ask for help.

It might be embarrassing, but women like to help one another/stick together when it comes to this kind of thing, so it should work out. You need to get the solution to this from one of them and your wife obviously isn't around to help.

Ok, ok, I gotta find a woman who knows how these things go down. There's women at the mall.

"Wait here, Tiff, I'll go find you some pads or something."

>"Fine. I'll just sit here shall I?"

Let's see... Ok there's a lady sitting at a table on the left, and... oh man, the gothic store on the right.

I have no idea where the pharmacy is. There's... probably a map somewhere though. Should I ask either of these ladies or try to find the pharmacy on my own?

It would probably be slightly less awkward to ask someone you already met for help... although Lynn hardly seemed like the friendly, helpful type. Because we obviously have no idea what we're doing, so there may be other mysterious feminine necessities involved here of which we are entirely unaware.

Tiffany had a while think while dad was away. She felt so confused by the vision. Why did she have it? Was it sent by someone? Was it real? Grampa might help her. But it felt so personal, somehow. Should she tell him?

"I had a vision."

>"Oh? Tell me everything. Start from the beginning."

"Well... I was at the movies with dad. Suddenly I could sort of see two pictures on the screen. Not like a double image, but I could... sense another image there. I closed my eyes and when I opened them I could see the beach on the day Tony died. Only I could see stuff I didn't see then. Tony sort of jerked upright, and just walked stiffly into the water. And I could see this weird symbol carved on his forehead. What does it all mean?"

>"Hmm. Interesting. Give me a moment to think about this... Yes, yes, ok. It sounds like your secondary abilities are emerging. Sounds like post-cognition to me. It's been in the family on occasion. Tell me, did anything else happen?"

"I, uh, had my first period."

>"Yeah that makes sense. This sort of stuff does tend to coincide with puberty. Did you see anything else?"

"No, just Tony and the symbol."

>"All right. Now listen, postcognitive abilities can be a wee bit dangerous. Visions tend to leave you vulnerable, and can happen at unpredictable times. You don't want to get one during a ritual. You might be able to control it when you get a little older, but for now I strongly suggest we use a spell to suppress that ability."

"I don't know..."

>"Trust me, being postcog isn't the most pleasant ability in the world. People have gone mad seeing all the past horrors in the world. You'd be better off with suppression. Think it over."

"Ok."

>"For now we should finish this damn bird. However, I need to give you a quick lesson before we can do that. I would've liked to spend the day explaining this but I'll have to keep it short."

"Listening."

>"Good. You remember yesterday when we bound a soul to the familiar, and then restored it to life, right? Well, there is a third component that's needed to make something fully alive. To make it whole. The problem is that English doesn't really have a good word for it. It's "haftsusha", usually translated as 'spirit' or 'guardian'. So there's "tuaftia" or "soul", "hanku" or "breath" and "haftsusha" or "spirit"."

"How is that different from the soul?"

>"Ehhh, it's more like tuaftia and haftsusha together make up for what English word for soul means. It's hard to explain, especially in English. Tuaftia is like that part of your soul that is uniquely yours. It was created when you were born and it will travel to the Underworld when you die. Haftsusha is more of a hand-me-down. Some time after your birth a spirit will choose you as it's host and when you die it will eventually find a new host. The exact criteria that spirits use to pick hosts is a little hazy, but they do tend to stick to specific family lines. It's also connected to the person's name. That's where the tradition of naming children after famous ancestors comes from, by the way. The haftsusha carries you know, personality traits and stuff like that. Does this make any sense to you?"

"I... think so."

>"Ok good. Now, uh, usually when you're trying to resurrect someone you don't have to give a toss about the spirit, it'll find it's way back on it's own. Unless it's found a new host already, but that's besides the point. Where was I? The familiar, yes. Since we've essentially created a close imitation of new life, this thing here doesn't have a spirit yet. It's still incomplete. In order to attract a spirit you'll have to name him. But consider it carefully, the name will affect your familiar's personality. I'll try to assist in picking a name so you can choose aspects of it's personality, but it's no sure thing. I think we've covered everything I wanted to bring up today, do you have any questions?"

[Ok so, suggestion time. Give a name for the familiar, and a one-sentence description of the personality you'd like it to have. Remember to also vote if you'd like Tiffany's apparent post-cog abilities suppressed or not.]

Sounds like the Haftsusha is what gives certain family lines their necromantic power.

I'm thinking the bird should be called Allen. He will speak only in verse (switching styles perhaps), and have a tendency to be extremely verbose about relatively meaningless details. Or is that too specific? In general then, he'll be cheerfully morbid.

Suppress the postcog. Otherwise, we'll probably wind up seeing everyone's ugly past and getting all conflicted. Or it will happen at the worst time and fuck everything up.

Do not suppress her abilities until we have more information on them; we should not be conducting any more heavy necromantic rituals over the next few days, so that should give us a chance to see what living with them is like before choosing one way or the other.

This might be getting a bit too meta, but while IC we've been told that the name attracts the spirit, OOC we were told to provide both an appellation and a personality description, which to me implies that we're getting to choose rather than having the GM twist our name around to somehow screw us.

I could be wrong on this, of course, but it seems to me that someone wildly out of line with our desires could be dug up for virtually any name. Presumably if we're likely to get totally screwed by our choice for some reason related to IC magical rules our helpful ancestor will advise us to that effect.

You see traditional, I see unoriginal.
Also, somewhat stupid from an aesthetic perspective, it's not really evocative of any features for which Ravens are known, just of one single poet who happened to write a famous raven-related poem.

Not necessarily. We get to choose both of these, thus making historical correlation irrelevant. Phonetic alignment is the only necessity, and it does not necessarily have to correspond directly name-to-name.

Especially since we're likely to drive Tiffany over to the dark side before this is over... we've already tried to learn how to create an undead legion.

Hmm, I'm almost still torn between Bruce Willis and Charles Barkley, but now I see a new option! Clint Eastwood. It's like shopping for clothes!

Oh yeah, we can be all clever with poetic Poe references, but can you imagine a bird who's pecking the fuck out of a bug and asking it if it feels "lucky"? We need one liners galore here and Allen Poe just won't deliver. It can't deliver at all! Think of the children! Eastwood 2012!

If we name our raven after an actor, the only one of whom I can approve is William Shatner.

That said, probably a bad idea overall.

>>172208
I would prefer "Quethe" over "Quoth". If only because I prefer to be more oblique in my references, the possibility of Shatner above aside. Not a bad name idea, though.

I am not sure how you would pronounce Quethe. Like Quest but with a lisp?
Anyway, Quoth is a Discworld reference, so I like it on that basis.

Can there be fictional spirits? Wouldn't that just be the spirit of the author?

I suggest Prometheus, his personality generous, caring, and inexplicably paranoid.

And postcognition stays, because Tiffany is a Counter Suppressing Necromancer and a half!

I VOTE FOR ALLAN BIRD

I prefer Poe bird to Allen bird, and I think a cheerful personality would be nice, given everybody else's dismal state.

...a happy-go-lucky raven? It'll be totally unexpected and ad'awwwable!

I'd pronounce it like you were saying "Queef", but changed your mind at the last second.

Monosyllabic names are a pain, though. You just can't say them the same.

Either Murder or Mulder. Possibly Mulder, because should your parents find out about your familiar, you can pass it off with a cover story (found lost/hurt in the woods, feed and nursed back to health). The name Murder is harder to explain away than Mulder.

Mulder is good and he should be prone to calling Tiffany either Scully or Dana.

Either that or gramps gets skully and Tiffany gets Dana.

Mulder's a nice name. It's the sort of name you won't get tired of hearing after five minutes.

I also like the personality that >>172164 suggested.

*looks up Mulder* Mulder, maker of wooden bowls! And 'of the dark' or 'miller', but that's not as funny.
I still like Crawford, who I would want to be brave and benevolent.
