Discussion: https://tgchan.org/kusaba/questdis/res/106192.html

It’s a bright and luminous day above the lunar surface of Cnidari Vaalbara; not one cloud hangs in the sky. For denizens of Port Echo, it was a favorable day to visit Cuttle Harbor; a place where communal events are held biweekly!

Most robust is the Eoochrqua Bazaar which stretches three-quarters of a mile along the eastern coast of the city. Industrial rigs and fishing boats occupy the water to collect large sums of pescatarian delights.

The Team followed up from crime boss Virgil Moss’ goons that something really illegal is supposed to take place here. Perhaps there’s a chance for the Team to reach a cargo drop before Moss does.

Aww, did someone run out of electricity? Let's fix that with a stun pellet. Applied directly to the forehead.

Cybil has her own means of shocking her assailant—and sends a fist to Grunt 2’s gut with a pellet firing off for a total of 7 DAMAGE ([17]/[45] MELEE) He is defeated and crunches in pain at her feet (+50 XP).Eudora left a bit of leeway when she charged Grunt 1; but once he felt the need to strike—the bug parried successfully and slapped him around for a minor 3 DAMAGE.

>Mention the assassin/the doctor is in trouble
Victor: “You there! What the Hell are you doing?! All personnel were supposed to evacuate the premises minutes ago!”

Krullghn: “I—what?”

Victor: “The people you work for are cleaning up shop! They’re eliminating all contacts and evidence, including the doctor! ([19]/[25] PERSUADE (+10% DRONE))

Victor: “If Moss finds out we f—d up, we’re f—d! Unless the assassin kills us first!”

Krullghn: “I, but… but he—”

Victor: “Where’s Doctor Oric??! We have to extract him before it's too late!”

The Krullghn just blurts out an answer, “Ah I don't know! H-he should be in his workshop! East of the laboratory! Oh great Ndepthteph! Now’s not my time to die! I... I gotta get out of here—!”

He runs out the door in a panic. Cybil’s drone dematerializes and fits into Victor’s pocket. Victor should:
a) Immediately go to the Eastern Hall
b) Meet up with his Team to help fight
c) Return underground and head East there

Cyb either use hologram to distract mook so Eudora can land a hit on the barnacle or have bug move so you can rifle the barnacle.

Cyberwire, shoot the other guy’s barnacle. Scarab, keep punching him!

Bindspot, if what the guy says is true, then the east door should take you into the same laboratory as the fight, and then the doctor immediately after that! Time for a mad dash! Someone’s life is on the line! (Looking at the grate positions on the map, I’m really hoping the assassin taking a detour to mess around with the power bought us enough time!) If the doctor is alone in there, secure him and wait to ambush him at that room’s grate. It’s the only way he could have taken without running into us as we converged in the hall!

Cybil tosses a pellet to Eudora before reloading and aiming her rifle. The constant flailing and tussle between the bug and the crab made it somewhat challenging to land a good hit—her shot misses the barnacle completely ([99]/[60] FIREARMS). The Arthocob wasn’t landing any hits either, as the Krullg was on the defense to duck his head after every swing. He felt there was an opportunity to fight back—yet he was parried by Eudora’s backswing into his jaw, and receives 6 DAMAGE with the shock attributed. He spins and rebounds off a barnacle trough before hitting the ground (+50 XP).

Eudora will catch up; she stomps on the barnacle to crush it as Cybil joins Victor to the Doc’s workshop. The obvious choice would probably be to barge in, perhaps catch the assassin before his kill. The Chupian and Gortian roll the doors wide enough to squeeze through to find…!

…a Cnidarian researcher at the far end of the room, undisturbed. The power is out, but he seems to have fabricated a makeshift lamp to continue working on his project. He doesn’t acknowledge either Victor or Cybil; his back is turned as he shuts out the world around him. He mumbles and murmurs to himself about something sciency.

The room is a cluttered mess of random research gizmos and lots of shelving. The gang will find more of the same stuff once found in the abandoned penthouse—lots of interesting tech with their circuits and parts torn away to salvage or reconstruct. This was a storage room when the research station was in use, now a closet of junk for the sake of the lone doctor.

Scarab isn’t in the room, she’s still in the lab.

Cyberwire, get a shield on the doctor IMMEDIATELY.
Blindspot, hold off on the smokescreen; that’s just asking for a missing assassin and dead scientist when the smoke clears. Instead, be on overwatch with the Tarboye. (Maybe we can negotiate? If we do, the first words out of your mouth have to be “Don’t harm the doctor, and you might make it out of here, assassin.” Short and sweet so he doesn’t have time to panic and attack prematurely before it all sinks in.) Make sure he can’t slip through the door in the meantime.
Scarab, after you’re done destroying every barnacle, wait for the assassin inside the east hall grate for if he does try to make a break for it. (Can’t expect it’ll happen immediately, so that should give you time to finish up and get into position.)

Victor: “Can you scan for intruders? Or something?”

Cybil: “Eh—in a way, maybe. My scanner can make a map, identify model numbers, find flaws in machines, replicate new images for my hologram, perhaps count how many specimens are in the area. Let me see—”

Cybil: “There’s a lot of unknown material I’m picking up—nothing new there. I’m also picking up three bodies currently not-dead. Should be Oric and the two grunts we suppressed. And there’s a lot of smaller, less-important creatures all around; assuming they’re barnacles or some rat in the wall ([19]/[65] SCAN).”

Victor takes a random screw from one of the many piles of tech and tosses it at the Cnidarian. It klonks off his glass bowl which only interrupts his speech—which he resumes muttering not long after.

Oric: “No, no… can’t work. Can’t work like that. I need — as big as a house… no! — city! How can I — no…

Victor: “I think it’s him.”

Cybil: “Approach slowly… I’ll keep an eye out.”

Cybil: “And Eudora, get your ass here and keep watch in the East hall. No one gets in or out but us.

The mutt cautiously walks up to Dr. Oric. He looks up the shelving and down the aisles, seeing nothing out of the ordinary in the dark—but the room began to feel eerily ominous ([73]/[67] AWARENESS). Cybil was only giving everything a quick glance—believing the assassin may pop out at any moment. She sensed nothing so far, everything was stark quiet and still. ([28]/[20] AWARENESS).

>Helioshield
Cybil sets up a shield by Oric’s desk, covering their backs. On his desk, the Cnidarian works on another prototype barnacle. Victor isn’t currently equipped with the Smokescreen ability.

Cybil: “Doctor…?”

Oric: “Your suit. It looks of Gortian design. Very old. Outside Khlaatus? Strange. But I always admired the work of Gortian technology; you could probably see it in my own design.

Cybil: “We have to leave now; you’re in danger.”

Cybil gradually places her hand over the prototype, “Doctor, there’s no time. I’ve no doubt your work is essential. But it can’t continue without you unless you come with us to a safer place. ([10]/[45] PERSUADE)

Oric takes a moment to pause and listen.

Cybil: “I understand you would do anything for your people—but you’ve been mixed up with the wrong crowd. We visited your penthouse earlier; we saw your logs. Your benefactors are shady, and have been dealing in some illegal business with Moss.”

Cybil: “There are many questions on what they plan to do with your help…”

Oric: “They wouldn’t harm anyone! They want Cnidarians to have the same rights, the same amount of respect like everyone else in this city! We are fragile people.

Oric: “Their motives make sense to me. We have a right to defend ourselves, you know. You can’t understand what it’s like to always live like trash feeders!

Eudora looks through the opening, “Is he dead?”

Victor: “SSSSSHH!

Cybil: “We’re not here to insult you, Oric. We know you mean well. We have connections with many like-minded scientists who will be glad to work with you. ”

The inventor gives a minute to think it over.

From the corner of his eye, Victor senses movement high above the shelving. A figure slowly stands up in shadow and pulls out a knife. There’s a slight glimmer of gold along its handle. Before any chance to react—the figure swipes at a pressure switch in the ceiling.

The alarm goes off. A secondary generator revs up and there’s hissing from the nozzles. Spewing from the ceiling are tons of CO2 smoke filling the room and hallways. Dr. Oric instinctively grabs his device and keeps it close to his suit.

Eudora stood by the doorway as the entire place fogged up. The hallway behind her was filling with more gas to suppress a non-existent flame. Amazingly, Dr. Oric caught the bug off-guard and managed to shove her aside in a panic.

Oric: “Nooo!

Cybil ran after and eventually reached the Arthocob, “Victor, come on! We must close this door!”

He instead took careful time to find the assailant, and slowly moved to make little noise. From his right he saw movement; the interloper ran for the door.

Victor readies a shot with his Tarboye, “Close it now! The killer’s gonna escape! I’ll be fine!” And fires at the entrance. Eudora managed to summon enough strength to shut the gate before a spray of black goop cakes and blocks the creases of the door. Now the Chupian and the assassin remain stuck in the storage room.

Agreed. A. Catch up to the poor fool as fast as possible, and secure him. Blindspot can handle the assassin, likely starting with all the smogwerfer debuffs on as much of the room as possible (aim up for maximum coverage). While Cyberwire is doing that, has Scarab dealt with the barnacles? If not, she should do a quick sweep of the unchecked rooms for the ones she missed. If yes, she should be guarding that tarred door and make sure the assassin isn’t home free by a long shot if he gets it open. (Alternatively, if the scientist can be convinced to let us do this to his experiments, Cyberwire can do the sweep and have Scarab on guard duty.)

>Go after Oric; have faith in your comrade
Cybil: “Ugh! I’ll… go after him then!”

The technomancer runs off shouting back, “Stay put, or… check any rooms!” She tries to believe in Victor, but not even Cybil has encountered an assassin on the job before. Vastly different from henchmen, they can be unpredictable and professional.

The Doctor is unable to navigate through the smoke-filled rooms, panicking and looking for a way out. He spins and already loses his place in the building. He almost stumbles over the previous grunts with their devices smashed and faces bruised.

Cybil: “Oric! Wait!”

Oric: “Get away! I don’t want to hurt you! How come I have to die? I'm trying to do good!”

Cybil: “It’s only me; Cybil! Look, you’re an important guy to these people. It’s not your fault that Moss kidnapped you!”

Cybil: “But it’s best you come with us! That battery can draw your sponsors out from hiding! You said the suits require lots of excess energy to function, correct?”

Cybil: “Are there any more batteries in this building?”

>Call the police, be ready for a pick-up
Cybil contacts Jer, Sepher, and Kreeb for the Doctor’s retrieval. Tar Zoa is somewhat downtrodden and compacted to travel through; most of the zone was built on top of a bay and is known to be slum-ish. Reaching the farm shouldn’t be too difficult for the police if they stick to the coast. Their arrival would be in ten minutes.

Still concerned about Victor she lets Jer know of the current situation while she guides the Doctor outside to carefully guard.

Oric: “Finally. What a relief. I thought I'd never see an ocean again!

The rest of the team communicate with their intercoms.

Victor: “Blech! Can’t… breathe! Choking! The assassin! I think—ACK! Can’t see!

Eudora: “Hold your breath, I almost got it open!

The struggle between Victor and the assassin continues as Eudora uses all her strength to force the door open. There’s a light tussle in the intercom until it blacks out.

The police eventually arrive with their lights blinking at the top of the cliffs. Once Cybil recognizes Sepher, she safely leaves Oric in his hands and sprints inside where the smoke has finally subsided.

Cybil finds Eudora with Victor sitting against the wall, catching his breath and with his mask off.

Eudora: “Once I finally forced the door open, he was choked out and the assassin threw him at me. Before I could get a good look, he budged right past to escape.”

Victor: “huff I couldn’t beat her. huff Or I think it’s a she. She knew every punch before I threw it, though. She’s too fast. But… she never used any weapon on me.”

Victor: “In fact… she looked familiar…”

Eudora: “Vic looked pretty roughed up, but the killer hasn’t done anything else but run off.”

Victor: “I wonder why she didn’t… you know… kill me instead.”

Victor: “Like Moss’ goons…”

Victor: “We have to stop her! Or... him! —cough!

If Cybil didn't see the assassin on her way in, I don't think we're going to find them again.
Familiar, huh? I wonder if the assassin was actually helping us? They seemed to have the opportunity to kill the doctor, but did nothing. In fact, the assassin only acted when Victor spotted them. ...did the knife thrower from before have gold on his daggers? ...on the other hand, the fencer was juggling daggers as well, and I think Victor would have realized if the assassin was the knife thrower. My guess is the fencer.

I feel like, aside from checking for more prototypes, we should just get out and make sure the doc gets to his correct destination instead of getting intercepted and transferred to a fake police vehicle.

When you put it like that, it suddenly clicked for me; Oric is an asset. Admittedly a stolen asset that was now working for an enemy of its original owner, but an asset nonetheless. Why kill an invaluable asset when you can just extract them? If this “assassin” was here to kill him, she would have done that when she had the chance. But obviously, that doesn’t mean she’s on our side, just that the original “owner” wanted this guy back under his roof in one piece, which means this guy’s work is even more valuable than our prior estimates.

Anyways, other than a passing question as to how Blindspot knew it was a she, I say we do C. Don’t want to miss some barnacles or something else important and feel stupid after the fact.

Well, if you’re convinced it’s one of the circus guys, then if you look real close at this picture: >>880757 , you can just barley see the assassin’s outline. I think it might be the Fencer.

Because of Eudora’s little contest against the Fencer on the circus’ obstacle course, we know that the Fencer is physically capable of doing what we’ve seen the assassin do.

Then again, it might not be any of them.

I’m thinking it’s just her being professional; she was probably given permission to use lethal force against Moss’s goons, but had no orders regarding the unlikely appearance of our team. She defaults to “don’t kill” which means either she’s aware that her employer likes to keep certain elements around despite them seeming counterintuitive to keep around, or she has at least some honor. Probably both.

Whatever the case, we can safely assume that the fencer (assuming that’s who the agent is) and her employer are smarter than Moss, in that they go out of their way to not kick up more shit than is strictly necessary. Moss could very well be flying by the seat of his pants here, considering it turns out he just recently splintered off from this mysterious employer (whom I will call X for brevity in the future until identified otherwise), assuming Oric can confirm what he said in his diary.

(Feel free to bring up our deductions during the soon-to-be-imminent debriefing, Cyberwire.)

>Could be the fencer from the circus/A vigilante
Victor stands up with Eudora and starts walking towards the exit, “Who was that girl… the one Eudora raced at the Bazaar?”

Eudora: “The, uh… I don’t think she had a name. Some ninja?”

Victor: “It makes sense now that I think of it. Capable for acrobatic feats, she could be a sole vigilante. Or maybe working for the benefactor? She wasn’t sent to kill Oric; there were plenty of opportunities for that.”

Victor: “She may have been here to take him back.”

Cybil: “We can figure that out later in debriefing. The police are right outside where you can patch up. I’ll check around the remaining rooms.”

Victor: “But the assassin—“

>check the remaining rooms > follow assassin
Cybil: “Oric is surrounded by many witnesses, I don’t think she’ll jump in and interfere with several cops in daylight.”

Cybil: “Now go. I’ll finish up here and we can all go home.”

Cybil checks the remaining rooms and, unsurprisingly, they were just bedrooms for employees who do their research here—with a bathroom as well.

She didn’t want to spend too long looking at every detail to see if there’s anything missable. She assumes it would be blatantly obvious ([38]/[20] AWARE).

Kreeb: “Have we met?

Sepher: “It was… commissioned? New suits for the department. There’s only a select few who are trying them out.”

Kreeb: “Your suit looks… shiny.

Oric: “[cobe]Oh, well. I designed it to be more than presentable! And I think I see my design in yours as well.[/code]”

Sepher: “What’s that in your hands?”

The Cnidarian holds it close to his metallic shell.

Cybil: “Seph, do you know who manufactured these suits?”

Sepher: “I can find out. Don’t know ‘the top of my head.”

Sepher: “For now we can hold Mr. Oric in our offices for safekeeping.”

Kreeb: “We may need to issue a medic first; protocol, you know.

>>883781
Hospital is the worst place, security is not super great in most hospitals. Also he's not injured? Police station is a little risky as the "benefactors" could have infiltrated it. A safehouse is usually not heavily guarded so someone as talented as the Fencer could sneak past security to get to the doc. On the other hand safehouse locations are usually secret so the Fencer would have a hard time finding the doc in that case. I... don't know how secure home base is, and... is its location secret?

Cybil: "Not to say I don't trust the police, but, I've seen too many movies to know someone could be working for the bad guys here."

Cybil: “A safehouse would only appoint too few guards who would be no match for an expert killer.”

HOME BASE, VAAL SOL
Everyone is back at home base. After some freshening up they meet for a quick debriefing. Before Oric enters the room with Jer, Cybil turns to the Chupian.

>Victor looks upset/shook up
Cybil: “Vic, are you alright?”

Victor: “Uh—yeah I’m fine. I’m good.”

Cybil: “You’ve been silent since…”

Victor: “—I know. My face still hurts a little.”

Cybil: “If there’s anything…”

Victor makes a small grunt.

Cybil: “You can talk to our therapist. You look a little shaken, is all. I’ve seen many cops change after a near-death or traumatic experience.”

Victor: “Nah, it’s— I’m good. I’m not traumatized. Don’t worry!”

He stares at the ground, perhaps thinking of his particular encounter. The Cnidarian walks in with the Gard not too far behind.

Oric: “I… can’t thank you enough. I don’t know what trouble I may have gotten myself in. I truly believed what I was doing was for good. But now I’m confused about my real purpose in all this madness.

Oric: “I’ll do my best to answer everything I know.

Cybil: “We need to know who you’ve been working for. How long have you’ve been with these guys?”

Oric: “Oh, it has to have been—maybe—five years since I left Port Electric.

Oric: “Even as a Cnidarian I was high up the ladder; it was difficult, however, to have my perfections and ideas approved.

Oric: “All PEC did was make shortcuts, and I had no choice but to follow through with manufacturing unsafe devices for my people. After too many accidents to Cnidarians without penalty I walked out…

Oric: “It hurt they didn’t even seem to notice my absence.

Oric: “But not long after, I was given an opportunity to craft something with complete control over. I was skeptical, of course, but they seemed genuine. I theorized some blueprints, and I would find errors in their prototypes. Of course, I was paid well for my help.

Jer: “Any names?”

Oric: “That’s just it: I’m not entirely sure. What I thought were different commissioners may have been aliases from the same person.

Oric: “Kilomation. DynoTECHNIC. PHO-Fi. Novica Mill. I’ve never heard of them before—they’re certainly not local. I was referred to someone else after each project.

Cybil: “Are you sure there were no names to lead on? There must’ve been something you’ve picked up.”

Oric: “…Perhaps. Moss privately talked to my benefactor—I could hear him argue in a different room in the penthouse, and may have uttered something.

Oric: “I think I heard… Cain.

Eudora: “What’s Moss’ role in all this, then?”

Oric: “No clue. He was hand-picked for a reason, though. Which brings me to ask: what does he have that the company needs?

>Suspicion of diagrams (C)
Cybil: “Is that what was all over your apartment? Diagrams and blueprints for those companies?”

Oric: “Yes. I may have been a little stressed, cooped up in that place. But the demand was so high!

Eudora: “It sounds like a regular business deal to me, though. What’s so illegal about this again?”

Jer: “Virgil Moss is still a criminal. But I can’t quite find anything worth looking deep into the company Oric works for. As far as we know they are just doing their business, with Moss as a bad employee.”

Jer: “Evidenced by their recent falling out, he was ‘let go’ and made trouble by kidnapping their greatest asset.”

Victor: “I think sending a killer to eliminate his gang is pretty illegal though.”

Jer: “True, but we don’t know who really sent the assassin. She could’ve been a sole vigilante or perhaps hired as a mercenary to retrieve Oric.”

Jer: “Nevertheless, I suggest we investigate the last clue found at the Bazaar as soon as possible.”

What the heroes know: After completing a design for an efficient Cnidarian suit, Oric was tasked to craft a battery to make up for all the energy expended by his inventions [>>868020]. Moss was apparently hired for an unclear reason, but such activities included him smuggling machine parts perhaps made by Oric’s design [>>questarch/>>771697]. Recently, there has been a falling-out between Moss and Oric’s boss [>>868022] and thus the Cnidarian was kidnapped for the Krullghn’s own benefit. The battery only had one problem, it discharges bouts of electricity which can be harmful—or grant a dangerous punch [>>854168]. Oric has been trying to fix this under pressure. His latest design is near-perfect and should solve all the problems before it.

>Use battery for Cybil’s suit.
Victor: “Hey, can we use the battery on Cybil? Fighting fire with fire seems to be a good idea…”

Oric: “I-I suppose I could try but—

Oric: “I’ve been trying to fix the discharge, not enhance it! Plus, the battery was made for inventions of my design. I will need to be familiar with Cybil’s suit to know it won’t explode from all the power it holds.

Cybil: “Plus… this is kind of the only suit I have.”

Jer: “What else have you developed that seemed out-of-place?”

Oric: “Only suits of various designs, mainly militarized functions for Cnidarians like me. With some additions and modifications.

Oric: “Generators, medical and furnishings—stuff just to benefit our way of life.

In the Elix Garden District houses one of many substations in Port Echo operated by the Port Electric Company. The distributer supplies half the city its power. The place can be visited by an appointment, and the gang was able to ask for a guide. It's a mainly quiet place with little activity outside. Cybil keeps the locker key, there could be an employee room somewhere inside. Eudora and Victor have the pager and radar. Nothing seems to have happened yet.

Inside, Calem talks about the business: more filler about the magic of Port Electric. Past the foyer and helpdesk is a large room where a cluster of computers and equipment are stationed. The majority of employees are Cnidarians out of their suits—cramped together, or piled to type on keyboards. Their suits are huddled somewhere in the corner, most rusty and outdated. Kreeb murmurs and follows slowly behind.

The area doesn’t look well-kempt on either side as they walk down the aisle.

Seven, eight, nine- hmm. My fingers must be malfunctioning, they don't stop at seven.
Can you subtly sweep for hidden weapons as you progress towards the back rooms? Start with the west room.
