Dagny is on a journey.

He never expected to leave the comfort of his warren, but he couldn't ignore the voice in his head any longer. It came to him in the hazy hours, as he awakened in the morning or went to sleep in the night. Always bidding him to head north. Always bidding him to keep it safe.

He has traveled for more days than he cared to count, driven on by the calling. He ran out of food some days ago, and the only water he has been able to drink has been through whatever snow he shoveled into his mouth.

Still he travels forth, moving northward as the light fades and when the wind kicks up the storms. He hides when the skies are calm and bright, because he knows that he is being hunted from above.

The trip today has been as eventful as any day. Dagny is hungry, but still has no food. His progress is slow, as although his hands and feet are no longer wracked with pain, he can scarcely feel them at all.

He might still be hearing the voices from the glass.

If he's awake, ask him what's up.

Considering that the Meek has risked his life (supposedly) countless times to protect that shard of glass, I think you should let him hold onto it for the moment.

Amalthea asks Dagny what's going on. He mutters something about how 'the voice stopped,' but mostly remains incoherent.

She considers leaving the glass be, but she has no real obligation to this Meek and chooses to unwrap it and look into it. All that she sees in the glass is her own face looking back.

Amalthea is certain that she doesn't hear anything unusual. Just the ordinary sounds of night in the drifts.

Amalthea starts to put the glass away, but as she does it ... shifts. It reflects a mild, but bright, light briefly. Tilting the shard from side to side, she finds a point where the light emits and holds it steady.

She asks Dagny if he knows what this means, but his only response is to shift awkwardly and bury himself in her chest fluff.

Right. Don't take more than a minute messing with the shard. There'll be other nights to test it.

Dagny weighs practically nothing to Amalthea, even if she was carrying a healthy Meek she would scarcely notice. Cradling him will also make it easier for her to hurry forward if the need arises, and he seems plenty comfortable where he is.

The shard appears to reflect the light while pointing at the sky, which puzzles Amalthea, but she decides to continue on in order to get Dagny to her home quickly. She walks on through the night, and as day begins to break she sees her village in the distance, nestled into a valley as the terrain becomes more hilly.

As she approaches, the night guard posted comes out to great her.

'Good Morning, Mistress Amalthea!

'Good Morning, Kleo. Vigilant as usual, I see.'

Kleo was one of Amalthea's many students. She was barely an adult, but her enthusiasm and physical prowess led her to exell at taking down large prey.

'As always! Did the hunt fare poorly? It is unusual to see you return so lightly burdened.'

Amalthea considered how best to respond.

Not a hot bath; A gently warm bath. There anyone in the village who knows at least the basics of how to treat severe frostbite?

You could mention that your searching spirit found this half-dead, ill equipped Meek, when it shouldn't have, which is quite odd.

Amalthea has known Kleo since her youth, and knows simply that Kleo likes the way her cloak looks. As the chosen, they have no need for any manner of protection from the elements -- while within their own lands clothing is worn only for utility or personal preference.

Even still, Amalthea would never demand Kleo's clothing. She is a valiant hunter and protector, despite her foibles. Amalthea is proud of her subordinate.

Amalthea gives Kleo a brief description of the hunt's events as they walk toward the healer's cabin. She mentions the oddity of the spirit seeking out the Meek, and the peculiar glass he carried. As they reach their destination, Kleo breaks away to return to her watch.

Amalthea enters the cabin to find the healer talking with Mat, a Wayward pilgrim who has been staying with the keepers for several weeks. The healer seems annoyed at the prospect of using his craft on a mere Meek, but sets to work immediately.

Shortly thereafter, before a bath can even be drawn for Dagny, Kleo bursts into the building.

Mistress, two of the Flock have come from the south. They seek audience with our huntmaster.

"Flock?" ...The Sky Men?

There's a pretty good chance they saw you take Dagney, or guessed it when you headed back without a kill. Why else are they asking for the huntmaster directly? Still, there's no reason to not hear what they have to say right now.

Amalthea and Kleo head toward the town's outskirts, where two of the Flock are waiting. The flock are considerably smaller and more frail than the Chosen, so Amalthea is not particularly worried about them starting a physical confrontation. With two Chosen there, they should almost certainly be cowed enough to avoid a fight.

'I am Amalthea, Hunter of the Keepers. Do you come to learn the old ways? Or do you come seeking something else?'

The larger of the two flock begins to step forward, but the slimmer one puts a wing aside to stop him and then bows courteously.

'Greetings, Lady Amalthea. My name is Bryg, and this is my associate Stuvaxy. What we seek is not your teachings. Our lord has tasked us to retrieve a missing object of great sentimental value, and in pursuit of the lowly thief who stole it we have come to your lands.'

Stuvaxy seems somewhat tense and retless, but Bryg remains collected. Despite their differing demeanors, both exude an air of confidence. If nothing else, they certainly aren't afraid. She can also see, quite plainly, that the two carry weapons.

'Our search may take some time, and we will need to remain in the area until we either find our quarry or sign that he has left. We have decided to seek you out, that we may ask for permission to hunt wild game on your lands while we remain. It would be ... inconvenient, after all ... to enter into conflict with the Chosen.'

Kleo stands by, waiting patiently for Amalthea to speak. She needs to choose how to respond to the travelers.

>>

can you tell us of the object so if you or your hunters finds it they will know what it is. if they tell you honestly then they may hunt, since they decided to be honest. if they don't or avoid the question or lie then don't permit them. hiding it means it isn't sentimental but has a power they don't want you to know of.

Just hunting? Fine, whatever. Do what you regularly do in diplomacy with other races in deals like these, limit them to a certain amount as to not hog all the food to themselves, etc.
Just do your standard amounts and stuff. I'm sure you've done this before with previous conflicts. No need to be any different from this time, maybe forbay them from coming close within your sanctuary and interacting with the other keepers. If they ask why, say you can't afford distractions this winter, and whatever isn't the keeper's business will be ignored. Our business is ours, their business is theirs. Let's keep out of each other's way.
>>
No. 394549 ID: f70e5e

something is wrong here. the meek did not seem to be a thief, and it is unlikely that these two would chase someone into this land for a purely sentimental item. the shard likely is important, and may have been influencing the meek. we don't know much about this situation, but these two are almost certainly lying, and that makes them rather untrustworthy. if you turn them down flat they may attack, so i'd recommend giving them permission to hunt game but give no further aid.
>>
No. 394570 ID: 369d34

Say that they may hunt in your lands while they pursue the thief. Ask them for a description of the thief and the stolen item, so that you may share it with the village guards and hunters. Ask how to contact them if you or your comrades find the thief or the stolen object. If they press to enter the village to search, politely decline, and tell them that your people are more than capable of finding and subduing a single thief that would try to hide in our settlement.

'You may hunt in these lands as long as it suits your needs. We tend to the world, it is not our place to own it.'

Bryg bows once again.

The hospitality of the Keepers does not fail to echo the stories. If only the land itself shared as much.

The two Bird Men turn to leave, but Amalthea speaks before they can take wing.

'Before you leave, perhaps you could tell us who this thief you are seeking is, and what has been taken?'

'The thief who currently carries the object is one of the Meek, from the southern ports. That he is meek should be enough, as they never venture this far north.

Should you find him, Burn this. We should be able to spot the signal from far away, especially in such a barren land as this.'

Bryg pokes his beak down into his robe, flicking his head forward and tossing a small pouch to Amalthea.

'And the stolen item?'

Bryg turns and begins walking away, Stuvaxy following close behind.

'As I told you, an object of great personal value to our lord, though little monetary value. If the Meek is found, he will have the item. If he does not, we can determine to whom he gave it. You needn't concern yourself with that.'

And with that, the two launch themselves into the sky and begin sailing off into the distance.

Kleo turns to face Amalthea.

So, they're after that Meek you brought in from the ice flats, right? I suppose it is fortunate that they don't know you brought him here. But I didn't know that he was a thief. I doubt the elders will permit him to stay long.

Tell Kleo that the mere fact that this Meek "thief" fled here, of all places, is odd enough to raise your suspicion. You'd like to hear his side of the story before you decide to hand him over.
>>
No. 415192 ID: ce4a4d

It's important to find out what the object is before giving it up. The Meek thought it was worth his life. Telling them you have it without being willing to give it up will only lead to needless bloodshed.
