Dagny is on a journey.

He never expected to leave the comfort of his warren, but he couldn't ignore the voice in his head any longer. It came to him in the hazy hours, as he awakened in the morning or went to sleep in the night. Always bidding him to head north. Always bidding him to keep it safe.

He has traveled for more days than he cared to count, driven on by the calling. He ran out of food some days ago, and the only water he has been able to drink has been through whatever snow he shoveled into his mouth.

Still he travels forth, moving northward as the light fades and when the wind kicks up the storms. He hides when the skies are calm and bright, because he knows that he is being hunted from above.

The trip today has been as eventful as any day. Dagny is hungry, but still has no food. His progress is slow, as although his hands and feet are no longer wracked with pain, he can scarcely feel them at all.

Dagny shifts around a bit. He still feels like most of him is all wrapped up, but he supposes that a heavy blanket explains why everything is warm and soft.

Dagny asks why she thinks he is going to die.

'You are not properly built to survive the cold. I do not know how long you have been here, but it has taken its toll on your body. Even if you do survive, you will likely lose several of your limbs. I have done all that I can for you here, but I am not a healer.'

Dagny asks if he will be able to complete his mission, stressing its importance.

'Understand that what is important to the Meek may not be important to anyone else. I can make no guarantees.'

Dagny explains that there are Sky Men chasing him, so obviously it must really be important.

'Nothing that large has been seen in our skies. If someone was pursuing you for some shard of glass, they have clearly given up the chase. Perhaps you should wait until you are well-rested and can recall your journey with more clarity.'

Dagny tells Amalthea about the light in the glass at night. He can still feel the bundled glass at his side, and manages to fish it out. He nudges the heavy blanket up in order to lean out and hand her the shard. He shudders at the sudden exposure to cold air, but is distracted as he gets a look at his apparent rescuer. He has never met one before, but from the stories he was told back in the Warren, she appears to be one of The Chosen.

He places the shard into her hand almost without thinking about it. He huddles back underneath the blanket after doing so.

'Well it will be night before we reach the village. Perhaps something can be seen then.

Dagny is glad to be back under the blanket, where it is warm and soft.

Amalthea doesn't know what to make of this.

She left her village the previous evening to hunt, but the spirit she sent in search of prey led her to a Meek. Finding a Meek this far north was something she never expected, let alone one actually seeking her people.

While his intentions are commendable, his story is difficult to understand. He has shown himself to be a credit to his people by even making it as far, but that only means so much.

He appears to have fallen asleep after handing her his 'magic glass.' It is a shard of ... something ... of surprisingly large size for the Meek to have carried this far, wrapped in a small cloth. He is currently on her back, shifting and periodically making a strange sucking sound as he murmurs in his sleep.

Amalthea knows that she won't be able to reach the village before nightfall while traveling at a slow enough pace for Dagny to rest, but her hunting camp is on the way. She could choose to stop there for the evening and build a fire, or just push on to the village even after it gets dark. She considers what would be best for her and her charge.
>>
No. 363138 ID: 607593

you should probably push on to the village. I don't know if the meek will survive so long in the cold like this, unless he'll have somewhere warm to stay at the camp besides your back.

A fire would be best. In fact, making a fire as soon as possible is best, since treating frostbite yields the best results when the most non-damaging heat is applied. Though that's easiest when you can immerse them in hot water.

Do you have enough water, and a bucket or something big enough to give him a hot bath?

Don't change your pace.

If you think Dagny's condition is severe enough that staying a night would worsen it, and can get back to the village without causing yourself any problems, then it's probably worth it to push on through the night and get to the village as soon as possible.

On the other hand, if staying a night en route is unlikely to affect Dagny's condition, there's probably no reason to push yourself unnecessarily. I'm assuming you've got a better read on how he's doing than he or we do.

It is better to stop at your camp and build a fire. You won't learn anything useful about him if he dies before he manages to be lucid enough to tell you anything. Although he is a worthless pile of nothing compared to your magnificence, he could still have information that would be useful or relevant to you.

Also imagine him suckling on your nipples.

I would suggest pushing on until you reach the village. This creature's life in in the palm of your hand, and finding someone who could treat his state could be the difference between life, death, or paraplegia.

Also, perhaps you should ask if he would mind traveling any faster. Short-term discomfort is probably worth a saved limb or two.

Amalthea considers what she has at her camp. While she could gather her bow and build a fire, there aren't adequate water supplies, nor containers, to soak the pitiful Meek in order to aid its recovery. Instead, she opts to set out for the village, with the intention of getting him care as swiftly as possible.

As the sky fades steadily into darkness and the Gods look down upon the world again, the Chosen keeps her pace. While she would appreciate rest, she knows that it isn't necessary and she could likely maintain this pace for at least another full day and night before she begin to truly feel the effects of exhaustion.

Soon the barren wastes of the ice flats give way to the occasional evergreen, marking the path towards her village. As she traverses the field of trees, however, she hears a familiar sound. She and Dagny are not alone in this copse on this night.

Amalthea is sure that the hulking shape lurking behind the tree is a Gogrut -- a fairly large, tusked, territorial predator. They can be dangerous, but Amalthea already knows that she can hunt and slay them. However, she has never done so while carrying a fragile, beleaguered package before.

Amalthea scoops Dagny up off of her back, cradling him against her shoulder. He stirs at the sudden movement and change of position, but Amalthea shushes him before he can make any noises.

Holding her spear out in front of her, she slowly circles around the Gogrut, taking a wide berth around the copse of trees in which it is residing. The beast remains wary, but stays safely at bay until Amalthea has rounded the copse. She knows that she can outrun the Gogrut easily - While it may be able to match speed with her over a short distance it can't maintain the pace for as long as she can. With the Gogrut behind her, she continues her trek toward her village.

Dagny appears to have awakened, and is pawing weakly at the wrapped shard of glass that Amalthea holds in her hand. He is muttering something, but Amalthea can't quite make it out.

Amalthea is certain that she doesn't hear anything unusual. Just the ordinary sounds of night in the drifts.

Amalthea starts to put the glass away, but as she does it ... shifts. It reflects a mild, but bright, light briefly. Tilting the shard from side to side, she finds a point where the light emits and holds it steady.

She asks Dagny if he knows what this means, but his only response is to shift awkwardly and bury himself in her chest fluff.

Dagny weighs practically nothing to Amalthea, even if she was carrying a healthy Meek she would scarcely notice. Cradling him will also make it easier for her to hurry forward if the need arises, and he seems plenty comfortable where he is.

The shard appears to reflect the light while pointing at the sky, which puzzles Amalthea, but she decides to continue on in order to get Dagny to her home quickly. She walks on through the night, and as day begins to break she sees her village in the distance, nestled into a valley as the terrain becomes more hilly.

As she approaches, the night guard posted comes out to great her.

'Good Morning, Mistress Amalthea!

'Good Morning, Kleo. Vigilant as usual, I see.'

Kleo was one of Amalthea's many students. She was barely an adult, but her enthusiasm and physical prowess led her to exell at taking down large prey.

'As always! Did the hunt fare poorly? It is unusual to see you return so lightly burdened.'

Amalthea considered how best to respond.

Amalthea has known Kleo since her youth, and knows simply that Kleo likes the way her cloak looks. As the chosen, they have no need for any manner of protection from the elements -- while within their own lands clothing is worn only for utility or personal preference.

Even still, Amalthea would never demand Kleo's clothing. She is a valiant hunter and protector, despite her foibles. Amalthea is proud of her subordinate.

Amalthea gives Kleo a brief description of the hunt's events as they walk toward the healer's cabin. She mentions the oddity of the spirit seeking out the Meek, and the peculiar glass he carried. As they reach their destination, Kleo breaks away to return to her watch.

Amalthea enters the cabin to find the healer talking with Mat, a Wayward pilgrim who has been staying with the keepers for several weeks. The healer seems annoyed at the prospect of using his craft on a mere Meek, but sets to work immediately.

Shortly thereafter, before a bath can even be drawn for Dagny, Kleo bursts into the building.

Amalthea and Kleo head toward the town's outskirts, where two of the Flock are waiting. The flock are considerably smaller and more frail than the Chosen, so Amalthea is not particularly worried about them starting a physical confrontation. With two Chosen there, they should almost certainly be cowed enough to avoid a fight.

'I am Amalthea, Hunter of the Keepers. Do you come to learn the old ways? Or do you come seeking something else?'

The larger of the two flock begins to step forward, but the slimmer one puts a wing aside to stop him and then bows courteously.

'Greetings, Lady Amalthea. My name is Bryg, and this is my associate Stuvaxy. What we seek is not your teachings. Our lord has tasked us to retrieve a missing object of great sentimental value, and in pursuit of the lowly thief who stole it we have come to your lands.'

Stuvaxy seems somewhat tense and retless, but Bryg remains collected. Despite their differing demeanors, both exude an air of confidence. If nothing else, they certainly aren't afraid. She can also see, quite plainly, that the two carry weapons.

'Our search may take some time, and we will need to remain in the area until we either find our quarry or sign that he has left. We have decided to seek you out, that we may ask for permission to hunt wild game on your lands while we remain. It would be ... inconvenient, after all ... to enter into conflict with the Chosen.'

Just do your standard amounts and stuff. I'm sure you've done this before with previous conflicts. No need to be any different from this time, maybe forbay them from coming close within your sanctuary and interacting with the other keepers. something is wrong here. the meek did not seem to be a thief, and it is unlikely that these two would chase someone into this land for a purely sentimental item. the shard likely is important, and may have been influencing the meek. we don't know much about this situation, but these two are almost certainly lying, and that makes them rather untrustworthy. if you turn them down flat they may attack, so i'd recommend giving them permission to hunt game but give no further aid.

Ask how to contact them if you or your comrades find the thief or the stolen object. If they press to enter the village to search, politely decline, and tell them that your people are more than capable of finding and subduing a single thief that would try to hide in our settlement.

This seems best.

And yes, if they withhold obvious information, then deny them access.

yes, let them. you may be able to extract information on the shard from them later on. but not now. now is too suspicious. wait for Dagny to recover and talk to him about it first.

'You may hunt in these lands as long as it suits your needs. We tend to the world, it is not our place to own it.'

Bryg bows once again.

The hospitality of the Keepers does not fail to echo the stories. If only the land itself shared as much.

The two Bird Men turn to leave, but Amalthea speaks before they can take wing.

'Before you leave, perhaps you could tell us who this thief you are seeking is, and what has been taken?'

'The thief who currently carries the object is one of the Meek, from the southern ports. That he is meek should be enough, as they never venture this far north.

Should you find him, Burn this. We should be able to spot the signal from far away, especially in such a barren land as this.'

Bryg pokes his beak down into his robe, flicking his head forward and tossing a small pouch to Amalthea.

'And the stolen item?'

Bryg turns and begins walking away, Stuvaxy following close behind.

'As I told you, an object of great personal value to our lord, though little monetary value. If the Meek is found, he will have the item. If he does not, we can determine to whom he gave it. You needn't concern yourself with that.'

And with that, the two launch themselves into the sky and begin sailing off into the distance.

Kleo turns to face Amalthea.

So, they're after that Meek you brought in from the ice flats, right? I suppose it is fortunate that they don't know you brought him here. But I didn't know that he was a thief. I doubt the elders will permit him to stay long.

Tell her it is not confirmed yet that the meek is a thief. We need to speak with him about how he found it, presuming he survives.

Just calmly tell her that you need to gather all of the facts before making a judgement like that

they claim the object is important for their lord but refuse to tell you what it is. they are lying. we must have the meek's side of the story.

It is unknown wether this Mook is truly a thief, or if they simply want what he has. We must not act hastily.

Tell Kleo that the mere fact that this Meek "thief" fled here, of all places, is odd enough to raise your suspicion. You'd like to hear his side of the story before you decide to hand him over.

It's important to find out what the object is before giving it up. The Meek thought it was worth his life. Telling them you have it without being willing to give it up will only lead to needless bloodshed.
