Discussion thread for http://quest.lv/wiki/Planetfall

It's been a while since I saw a thread where people roleplay rather than constitute the collective suggestion machine.

I must say I very much like where the quest is going so far. I don't know if the bureaucratic blip we've seen was planned all along or it is a narrative way of denying us any "outside" help in our mission, but it worked out nice regardless.

Anyway. Farmer, how big of a part do you see the operators play in the quest when they try "investigating from their side"? Do you think Planetfall could have two parallel lines, i.e. us hepling Weasel survive and us trying to work around the rules in HQ?

Also, any way we can arrange for an unmanned orbital supply drop? I wanna get Weasel a proper medical kit. And some soap. Lord only knows what that jumpsuit does to your pores.

Yea, the chance for 'dual questing' makes this quest stand out for me. I really want to see where I can go with this.

Maybe hire a spy or somn.

I'll just repeat here a few things I said on IRC. I don't want to seem like I'm pulling in any particular direction specially because you guys seem to be doing fine without me!

- I'm fine with the RP thing. Heck, it seems to be growing on something nice so far. I'll just have to treat you guys more like characters.... mwahahahah xD

- Any requests for anything will have to go trough the usual channels. I could go on and on on the meaning of that, but I'd rather leave as an exercise to the reader. Someone asked me in IRC about a budget; thats one of those things that aren't too important. Not all problems can be solved with checkbooks.

- About parallel lines, I think you're asking that a bit too late. I'll refrain from saying much because I'm having fun seeing this develop, but remember; Weasel dies, game over, all that effort is for naught.

Mn, wouldn' that mean the game's already over?

And yet... I feel like there's one more thing to say. No whining when things go south. Imean, its me, people. Need I say more?

This may turn out to be a stupid question, but what IS a stichworm implant? I can't find anything that describes it.

I ask here because if it turns out to be something really bloody obvious that the "operator me" would know, I don't want to look like a jackass "in character".
>>
No. 27960 ID: 5e01fc

Thats something I kinda explained on IRC but y'know what? I'll just open the next chapter with the thingy, if that's the case. But no, the implant isnt the worm in itself, is more like an adaptation to recieve it. Long story.

>Daughter of [REDACTED-Private][REDACTED-Private].

SHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII_

Her dad must be some rich guy or somebody high up.

He must be dead and they are keeping her away so that they can keep her inheritance.

THEY ARE HIDING SOMETHING
I am just too busy to figure it out.

That actually sounds plausible. Would explain the "sent away to die alone where noone finds you" thing.

More likely, her father is alive, and like you said, pretty high on the food chain.

She must be a bargaining chip against her old man. (You support us or we won't send a rescue for your daughter.)
>>

>>337847

If that's the case, we should try and get her name out of her. If he is alive, we might be able to get some additional support on our end, which we can then use to aid Weasel. Funny, though, she completely ignored at least one request for her real name.
>>

Could be true, but doesn't make much sense from a metagaming point of view, as her father's action would matter more that all of the operators' attempts combined.
>>
No. 28072 ID: 146bca

>>337870
Yes it does. Whoever her father is answering to probably has an eye on him, so he can't even sneeze without the faceless entity knowing. His hands would be tied.

The operators, on the other hand, would be considered less of a threat by the faceless entity, and thus, would be able to do something in Weasel's father's place.

Oh, and just a sidenote. I don't wanna sound like I'm pretending to be a mod, but guys, please let's keep the [offscreen action] reasonable. Time flows the same for us as it does for Weasel. It's possible to request a file or make a call via your terminal while Weasel wanders around the wilderness for a few hours. It's impossible to construct a makeshift interplanetary radar in the same timeframe.

You got a ship with Cryo?
If not can you afford one?
If not, can you afford the supplies she would need for such a journey and a ship that can hold it all?
Can you get any of these things without arousing suspicion as to their destination?

There are several reasons why she could not come back with the delivery drone. I'm not getting into all of them.

Let me just elaborate on my idea, I know a guy, that knows a guy, that knows a guy that heard of a guy that runs a black market deal and can run some goods for us. I figure we can't use the normal routes because apparently 'nothing' is on Parsson-5 and people would start to ask questions.
He charges for distance and charges per item, extra if it's a large item. He does not run large deliveries as they attract more attention. Blah blah yadda yadda.

If you don't like it and won't do it then fine. Quest lives on.

as a completely meta argument as to why we should not try to save her:

it will fail, deus ex machina style. actualy plotting for her death would be more likely to suceed, but any success on that part will end the quest, possibly with BAD END.

the main point of the quest is the loss of the agent, the inability to keep up with the new item demmands and the strangeness of the world. it even has the actual character request to call for HQ to know of her mission in order to set up the feeling of stranded and MIA.

at best, your request to send a unmanned, cheap drop pod will suceed partially if its a needed plot device to continue the quest, but then we would have GM kindness and further easymodes. this is only likely to happen if the planet shenanigans would be dried off.

hopefully, you will not suceed to call a mercenary drop on her either because the planet is neither of the persona1~6 or because we actualy are not able to due to administrative/ economical reasons.

at worse, we are indeed "AIs" extracted from a "talking glass orb" to beta test a "matrix minecraft" server on a agent selected as MIA'd to keep secrecy of it. monies? agent names? survival guides? cooking tips? the admins would be surprised we know what those things are!

A question:
Were people obnoxiously trying to mess with the game by doing [do action] a major factor in the quest working out? If that is confirmed to be the case I (and hopefully others) will try harder to discourage that sort of thing in the future.

>actual effort
Yes. I was.

The whole point of Planetfall has been to make an effort to paint, if possible in a speedy manner. Each panel takes from one to four hours, from screenshotting and translating actual Minecraft landscape to pplotting pixel-sized grass on the screen. Often I tried a new thing or two on the grass. You may not believe it, but it was very very hard work.

Its not uncommon to have to toss a screen out because angle want working, usually making entire flats vanish against the grasses. The main reason that wireframe map at >>360618 had holes, was to be able to show some landscape shape. And thats not a problem that happens only when I'm dealing with two colors.

Included: how PF actually looked for me. Believe or not, this textureset helped view the landscape (and sped things up too!).

>[do action]
No. Part of the point in Planetfall was to think outside the box, even if the 'box' was not something I explained how it worked -- or rather, how it didn't. I'll admit some of the stuff you guys asked frustrated me to no end and made no sense to me. But that's just something I was just asking for.
>>
No. 45693 ID: ab6b15

Honestly, I don't mind the quest is over. Not to imply it wasn't fun; I meant that in a "no hard feelings" way.

However, I feel obliged to say two things:
- The successes were incremental and made advancement seem like grinding
- Weasel's (somewhat realistic) ineffectiveness compounded feelings of helplessness

Take it how you will.
>>
No. 45694 ID: 99f447

It's a shame this is going away, because I've really enjoyed it as a quest. Possibly because Planetfall has special connotation to me, Planetfall is the name of an infocom game that is frustratingly difficult, and when it was just starting I tried to throw in as much of it's brand of humor into my posts as I could.

I really enjoyed the way we had our side to the game we were playing separate from what weasel was doing, and I also enjoy the entire "survival from nothing" theme with Weasel too.

Thanks for going as long as you did. Sad to lose another good quest.

Man, I can understand you not wanting to run this anymore due to frustration but holy shit dude you don't have to run it into the ground so viciously.
>>
No. 45701 ID: 1854db

I think you were approaching the painting in a far too literal manner if you were trying to do things fast. You were attempting to replicate a screenshot in a slightly different style, right? If I were running this, I would've used the screenshots to get the angle and proportions right and then just painted a FAR more stylized representation over it. Don't try to convey little details, just get the picture DONE.

Also turning minecraft landscapes into 'real' landscapes is a bit difficult- how do you determine if a slope should be dirt or grass? Or even a slope at all?

Hmm, the wide-angle shot you displayed there probably isn't a good idea if you're going for speed. The less information you have to convey, the faster it goes. Then there's the fact that it can be hard to convey depth with such a high saturation environment.

So. How come you never said anything about this frustration before?
>>
No. 45702 ID: 453e62

i would not mind a drop in quality at all if it means to continue. i care far more about the story then it being pretty.
>>
No. 45706 ID: 55c4cf

Compreendo perfeitamente.
If you're not happy, Farmer, then I hope you can find something else that you actually enjoy doing.

None of these suggestions make a difference if you do not enjoy running the quest. Take care of yourself. If you still do other quests, great! If you eventually come back to it I'm sure other people will be happy, either way I wish you the best.
Até depois!

Lamentável...

Well, there's no point in continuing if it doesn't make you happy. Take care.
>>
No. 45709 ID: 7a7217

Idunno. I might start a new thing, or just continue Dungeon Game. I'm not dead to questing in General; Planetfall was just making me miserable.

I thought about toning down the art, but well -- there aren't many ways to do the landscape's shape without trying to be painterly.

Frankly, I determine slopes mostly by guessing. If its one block down, its a slope. More than that, its a cliff.
