Kind of, it’s my first professional one done on tgchan. I have done similar ones on a Facebook page that was run by a few friends of mine so we could coordinate d&d games. It was fun but due to lack of interest on their part it just kinda stopped. I’ve actually taken a few of the ideas used in the ones I did there one this one.

I see, yeah writing this kind of interactive stories heavily rely on readers. As for your story, what direction will it take? Will it be something supernatural or will it be a realistic representation of that time period
>>
No. 119359 ID: 3583d1

>>119349
It's going to be a fairly historical based quest, meaning most fights will involve out thinking your opponent but it will have some light fantasy elements, as seen with Geirvaldr.

As for the tone, well I don't plan on pulling any punches for the most part, so while it will be dark it's not going to be Grim Dark exactly, there will be some realism and how you chose to interact with the characters will affect them. For an example Sigurd ended up freaking out because someone said he was going to be buried alive in the well. Keep in mind he is nine years old right now, things will scare him.

One suggestion I might make is to keep in mind that the only records of what happened in Lindisfarne were left by the good Christians who got their ass kicked. So when they say
> Never before has such terror appeared in Britain as we have now suffered from a pagan race ... The heathens poured out the blood of saints around the altar, and trampled on the bodies of saints in the temple of God, like dung in the streets.
It's probably not the whole story, and just a wee bit of an exaggeration. That being said, examining the burial sites left by the Viking communities involved in such raids revealed that a few English women were living with them... but no English men.

That being said, Vikings practiced cremation, and burial-at-sea for their greatest warriors, and Vikings were rabidly sexist at the time, so typically, only males would be allowed a warrior's funeral. Thus the grim picture of "Slaughter all males, rape all females," again might not be the... whole story.
>>
No. 119361 ID: 3583d1

>>119360
I've kept these facts well in mind. Because as you pointed out, the only account we have of the Lindisfarne raid is the ones given by the monks that actually survived, so of course somethings are going to be exaggerated, and be from the victims point of view. I've actually done a lot of studying on vikings and norse culture for years now, so i'm going to paint a picture of them as what I think they might have been like while also giving some credence to the idea of them being fierce warriors

>>119360
The only thing I would disagree with was the idea of "Rabidly" sexist. Women were generally expected to stay at home yes, but they were the ones who ran the farm and even owned the land at times. For an example There were of course shield maidens that were given a warriors burial, to an extent at least. There was even a law about rape of a man's wife, and they could even divorce if they had just cause. So while I would agree the law's favored men, it wasn't as bad as other parts of Europe at that time.

I'm doing something like a majority rule, i've noticed a lot of quest authors have to go with what the most suggestions for one action is. In this case, it came down to "Compliment him, see if that works."

Just know that your jokes may end up screwing characters over ;) just sayin' be careful.
>>
No. 119409 ID: 50d32d

>>119361

There's a theory that the reason those raids started is because Vikings had been practicing infanticide, killing newborn girls because they wanted sons, not daughters. Then go figure they ended up with a ton of unhappy single males hitting puberty. So... you have to be pretty damn sexist to murder babies just because they're girls.

It might seem ludicrous, but that sort of thing has happened a lot in history, sadly enough, China being a notorious example. There are theories that the raids were driven by a famine, but there's no records of that occurring, and theories that it was a population boom, even though again... no evidence that there was one. And that's as much as I know about it. I haven't studied up on Vikings much, specifically.

Also majority rule is cool, but don't be afraid to use veto power as the author. Or go with a suggestion you (or the character) would really like. If you want us to screw him over, trying to swoon over hot Viking raiders, make sure it's because you want to screw him over. Otherwise you've no obligation to do so.
>>
No. 119414 ID: 094652

So would the "fantasy" elements (I'm not talking magic or ignoring physics, but about plot holes in behavior patterns and irregular causality to make the story accessible to modern-day readers and make the game skewed in our favor) be more "Vikings" or "Vinland Saga"?
>>
No. 119421 ID: 3583d1

>>119414
Kind of. Without giving too much away I plan to have some fantasy elements in the sense that... Well lets put it like this, this Story is roughly at the turn of the 9th century (also I'd like to clear up somethings the date was a error on my part and by then it was already too late so the correct date would be 793 c.e.) so only around 800 years ago, a man was born who could walk on water, turn water into wine, and performed various miracles. It is so wrong to assume that there might be other people with extraordinary powers like that? Or that maybe this power is slowly leaking out of the world? Just a thought...

>>119409
I will keep that in mind. I've been trying desperately not to railroad this quest because I can go on and on about how I hate it when quest authors do that. So the majority thing was really just trying to make sure I don't do that. I will keep that veto power in mind however. It does bring up an interesting ooint involving player/character interaction. If you've noticed Sigurd has a lot of doubt and is easily scared, there is a reason for that, one being that he really is just a 9 year old kid. The second reason would be heading into spoiler territory.

I never actually said the hooded warrior is Sigurd.

However, to be honest, I can’t actually answer that with out spoiling some things I have planned. But I will say this, Erik needs to be careful in what he wishes for when it comes to fulfilling his goals.

As for being “a hero,” I think our hooded warrior friend was laying on the sarcasm pretty thick. Basically, he was saying he has killed a lot of people, so many (perhaps on the battlefield?) that not even “murderer” fits him any more.

Okay so I’ve had a question about how my dice system is working for the quest and I figure I would answer it here.

There will be times when we add modifiers for the rolls but for the most part this is just a simplified version. However what I have in place is something like an exploding dice rule, if you roll a 20, you are allowed to roll again for another action, in this case it was an attack. That attack was also a 20, meaning that those Draugar, just got wrecked. And because two 20’s in a row is kinda amazing I decided to have some fun with this and give you guys a free power up for your great luck.

I've noticed a couple of people keep linking songs in my quest, the only thing I have to say about this is, keep doing it.

Seriously, I really enjoy hearing the music you associate with my work. It's actually one of the reasons I don't put music in my quest. I want the reader to have their own image and music playing in their heads. It's always fun to hear what you guys are thinking with them.

Actually no, there may be some similarities but he would actually hate the Angles and Saxons more than the Danes. For one I picture this character as being the third son of a welsh lord who styles himself as more Roman than Celt. And he would have a deep hatred of the Saxons who pushed the Welsh eastward out of their own parts of Britain. I actually like the ideaof him being an archer even more now, it gives him more than just “young lord” for an identity.

Young and handsome for certain, maybe even the envy of his brothers. But not so helpless as Canute was at first. Because the deal with younger sons of lords, they would often either go into the military or the clergy. Obviously if he is an archer then the military was what he went into.
