“Well... there’s two basic solutions: find out what happened to Hekal faster, and find a way to supply the bargast with mana.” Casey ticks off their options on her fingers. “The good news is we have someone with expertise on vampire runes translating the last third of the guardian tome. And the quicksilver machine might lead us to more information... if we can figure out how it works.”

“I’m going to talk to Rodwin as soon as I can and see if I can get him to reign in the undead.” Kol explains. “Apparently the vast bulk of them are made to follow simple orders, but eventually the hunger for mana will make them unmanageable.”

“As for mana... I don’t know if there’s enough natural sources available for what we need. At least, not on this plane.”

Gabe leans forward and swallows, his throat dry. “What’re you thinking?”

“Even if we knew how to make a mana well, we couldn’t: its just way too dangerous to exist.”

“Riiight...”

“But a mana well is basically just a stable spirit gate. Could we hold one open long enough to... ‘feed’ the bargast?” Casey taps her finger on the map, highlighting the swirling void of leylines around the living cemetery.

Gabe blinks and reels back in his seat, struck by the uncertainty of the answer. “I... I have no idea. It... it might be possible. Spirit gates take an enormous amount of mana compared to spacial gates: whoever is running it would have to be immensely powerful.” His mind automatically registers a few notable faces. “But...I don’t know, I’ve never heard of anyone using a spirit gate to collect mana.”

“Maybe we should ask someone who does know.” Kol palms something and hands it to Gabe. “I picked this up for you today, why don’t we message one of the guardians?”

The sender turns over the scrying crystal in his palm, admiring the flawless, clear gem in the light of the kitchen. “Oh wow! I’ve never held one so small! Thanks Kol!” Gabe focuses and makes a few passes with his finger over the surface. “Let’s see who I can find.”

I get the feeling Clio might be a good idea to have involved, if it's a type of gate that takes a lot of juice to power she seems a solid choice, though probably wanna have a more experienced sender/guardian involved.

Also does that mean mana can go through spacial gates too? If, hypothetically an active manawell was found could a gate or gate relay siphoning from one get it to the barghast?

Haha, why not try calling on Tuvara-Malli while you're at it? She's supposed to be out there somewhere still and you did get that gem from one of her relatives! That'd sure as heck speed up the search for Hekal and Augustine.

But more realistically, Mariana Rue-Larrey might be able to help make that a reality. Don't know if she'd approve, though. Kol's uncle might be more willing to help out, though, so if they go with him first, he could help persuade her. And Ciel might have enough talent to ease the task.

Anyway, got a thought.

Is there any clear purpose to keeping a mostly-mindless army around this day and age? Couldn't you, y'know, instead of feeding it... just SEND it? On its merry way, at last?

I mean, get Rodwin's take first, but it'd be about as logical a conclusion as continuing to feed 'em at regular intervals to keep 'em around. Especially if they're meant as mostly mindless fodder for a war that ended literal ages ago. Sure, he'd say it's not his call to make... but the point is - what would lord Hekal need with this section of his army in this and age?

For one, he'd have to strip the land bare to maintain it without a mana well or spirit gate - AND give them a taste of life to boot - and I really get the impression that wasn't what he was all about. Like, at all.

In a pinch, sure, you CAN go for the mid-goal of keeping 'em fed with Spirit Gate mana, but it's a temporary measure and does go against the Guardians' whole philosophy - not that you're not willing to bend that a bit. It's just weird if you could just, y'know, give them bones some peace at last. Unless there's some other compelling cause not to!

... did Rodwin ever bump into any rival barghests out in the mists?

The interior swirls and reveals a tiny, serious face. Sifr looks up, apparently aware of the spell. “Who’s this? Hello?”

“Uh, sorry to bother you uncle...” Kol addresses the gem. “We were just discussing the situation with the bargast.”

“Mariana brought me up to speed on what’s happening.” He nods and sighs curtly. “I was actually planning on messaging you. What can I help with?”

The three mice share a look: gaining a moment of support from one another. Kol continues, “We were talking about using a spirit gate to gather mana for the bargast. Is that even possible?”

The older Bardo clicks his tongue and thinks about his answer. “Short answer, no. Long answer, yes. I can tell you more, but I need a favor.”

“Oh.. okay? What do you need?”

“Gabe. Do you think you could manage a few more gates today?” Sifr asks.

“Uh... yeah I guess?” He smiles nervously; the seriousness in the medium’s tone putting him on edge.

“Good. I require transportation.”

A few minutes later a boom ripples, momentarily drowning out the wind. The guides step out of the gate and take stock of their location. The landscape is grey and unforgiving: a flat, barren place home to scrubby weeds and worn stones. In the far distance, a line of cruel, spike shaped structures sew the sky to the ground. The only sound is the ever present wind, which whips sand and grit at their ankles angrily. An unease settles deep inside the mice like a physical presence.

“Where are we?” Casey asks.

Sifr Bardo stares ahead, “This place doesn’t have a name. Names are for places that should be remembered.”

I would argue that this place has a memorable look, and as such would be worth remembering on that basis alone. If something made it look this way that would be memorable and likewise deserving of name. Also given that our current problems come from lack of historic information, this sounds like an effort to suppress information, not to mention a sign saying 'nothing is here' is an basically an active invitation to look closer.
so either explain or we will have to go investigating on our own.

“What do you mean? Why’d you bring us here?” Kol demands.

“To show you the burden about to be placed on you.” He replies, his voice soft and not without a hint of regret. “Tell me. What is it you feel here?”

The mice share a glance at one another and look around at the hopeless landscape for clues.

“I don’t know. Uneasy? Worried? Kind of freaked out? Being mysterious about it isn’t helping, uncle.”

The old man chuckles, “Fair enough. My comrades have... told me not to be so dramatic. But I suppose its no surprise that you don’t recognize it.”

Gabe gasps, “Spite!” The sender’s eyes go wide with fear as realization dawns. “This- this is spite! The whole place... oh Fates...”

“Wait, this whole area is cursed?” Casey glares, “Why would you bring us here? We could get... poisoned! Or- or-!”

Sifr waves a hand to calm her, “A short visit won’t do any lasting harm. I need you to see the importance of what is happening. Spirits must be helped to pass to the other side; those that are unwilling leave behind a hatred so strong it burns the life right out of the land. This is a place that the Guardians have been forced to set aside for... more difficult spirits to be banished. What you see here is the cumulative effect of generations of spite.” He sighs, “They tried to pick a place far from people, where the effect wouldn’t be felt. But even here, living things once scurried.”

Kol scowls at the scarred scenery and demands, “What’s this have to do with us?”

“The Guardians are assessing the situation: one plan that’s been discussed is sending the undead to the other side. Its a monumental task, made even more difficult by the fear that the act may release spite and curse the whole city.” He runs his hand back across his scalp through his thinning hairline. “Most of the army is made up of simple soldiers that follow orders: in theory they should pass through easily. But... should they lose control or if the hunger becomes too powerful, there’s no telling what could happen.” Sifr glares at them seriously and continues, “The School of Senders is hoping to pre-empt this: they’ll begin work sending smaller groups of undead as soon as possible, but... the spellcasting may also cause the horde to awaken faster.”
>>
No. 975975 ID: 094652

This won't go well. You can't handle a full-scale war against your hands. Just talk to Rodwin first, tell him you can't keep your promise if he refuses to enforce his.
>>
No. 975976 ID: b1b4f3

Well, if we got the undead off the barghast without spellcasting, then we wouldn't have to worry about the spellcasting attracting the mindless horde.
Would the horde even have enough emotional weight to cause a spite reaction?
>>
No. 975977 ID: 028f23

Yeah, what I'm hearing is mostly reinforcing the idea that any breakdown of communication or attempt at violent resolution is a lose-lose situation for everyone involved full stop. We need to contact Rodwin as soon as possible to tell him the score.

I also don't see how sending any of the undead aboard the Bargheist without provocation wouldn't immediately spiral into open conflict of some kind. And like he says, even if we win that fight, we could permanently poison the land around the Point.

We're in a mexican standoff with time itself. We better find a solution to that mana problem and fast, because that's the only way I can see that doesn't irreversibly escalate the situation.
>>
No. 975984 ID: 03e96b

Alright... those sound bad. But you want us to know the options on the table already, before you talk to us about the one we came up with. The short answer was no, but the long answer yes... so what is the long answer, longer?
>>
No. 975995 ID: dbd72b

Gonna agree on contacting Rodwin. We've made good faith attempts and progress towards his goals, and at this point we also stand to benefit from achieving them. Even if he can't do anything directly, something as simple as moving the barghest would be a tremendous help. We don't have to tell him all of our plans immediately, but he's been fairly reasonable. There's room to negotiate.
>>
No. 976000 ID: 9b3d99

Contacting rodwin is important. This is definitely not a good scenario, but even he might agree that the mindless horde should be sent depending on how he takes the news. You've been genuinely helpful to him and you're trying your best. What was that other thing about the mana portal option though?

“What about out idea?” Casey asks.

“You asked whether one can collect mana from the etherial plane using a spirit gate, correct? Well, you can’t: spirit gates are one way only.”

“Wait, what? Really?!” Gabe blinks. “I- I had no idea!”

Sifr nods. “Mmm-hmm. Built into the spell. Keeps spirits from flooding out every time you send someone. Its not exactly secret, just an esoteric bit of spell construction. Nothing can pass through a spirit gate from the etherial plane.”

“I’m sensing a ‘but’ here...” Casey squints at the elder Bardo suspiciously.

“Correct. But there is a way to collect the mana we need: by traveling into the etherial plane, finding the Font of the Fates, drawing mana from the source there and re-entering the mortal plane.”

The guides feel their pulses quicken at those words as a whirlwind of emotion flashes through them: fear, excitement, curiosity. Kol speaks first, trying to keep his voice calm. “S-sure but, isn’t this the kind of thing the Guardians should handle? H-haven’t you, you know, been there before?”

Sifr shakes his head, “This is a journey you’re only allowed to make once. Its one of the rules of the Fates.” His tone is soft and serious, his usual cockiness replaced with a deep concern. “I’m asking you three to go. You’re still... so young, but you above all know the stakes here. If you succeed... you’ll be Guardians.”

The mice are silent, struggling to process the enormity of the task. Gabe, Casey and Kol look to one another, sharing a thousand unspoken questions in every glance.

“There’s... still time to think about it.” Sifr sighs, “Although, not much. And time will be needed to prepare.” He puts a hand on his grand-nephew’s shoulder and grips it reassuringly. “I believe in you three. You’ve come a long way in a very short time and if anyone can do this, its you.”

Kol looks to the other two and confirms the unspoken agreement. “If you think we’re ready, then we’ll do it. I want there to be some sort of contingency though, in case we don’t make it back.”

“We’re already working on putting some together. We’ve even reached out to friendly fey courts for help, although Rodwin being a devil complicates things quite a bit.”

“We may need to use that mana sooner than planned. If something isn’t done, the horde is going to wake up and find its way into town. Indeed.

As the Commander in Hekal’s absence, does he have any viable alternatives to the proposed course of action?

Furthermore, if Hekal were to return tomorrow to find half his army had, in effect, retired... would he lament the loss? What great need would that army fill in this day and age? And how would it even be maintained, in this mana-weak world?

Look, he’s done a damn fine job of maintaining his charge, but with an entire army AND the barghast to maintain for Hekal’s return, he has to make some priorities and choices, and soon. Maybe consider things from his Lord’s perspective and what he’d consider a win?

The last thing the Guardians want is an undead army running rampant and hungry for living mana. Frankly, you don’t want to Send unwilling spirits at either. It has... consequences. Ideally you’d try to turn ‘em lucid, do one-to one conversations, get consent, but circumstances do not seem to allow this.

You’ll attempt to get some extra mana from the Sea of Dreams direct, but that’s a one-off thing and, uh, you might not make it? You probably will, but there is risk involved. He should ready himself to receive it and plug the gaps, or, well, make choices.

This would be a lot easier if you had even a temporary mana well. Progress was being made on repairing the machine of Lord—-

The kobolds!

Could the kobold brand of binder magics help keep the undead in check?
>>
No. 976843 ID: ee6358

At this point you're trying to explore all options to keep everyone safe. Sending them isn't the ideal, it would potentially severely fuck things up, but frankly speaking, the food supply of the army is not large enough to sustain how large it currently is and you need either more food or to make it smaller. We're working on the more food option, but surely he understands that "undead eating the populace" is not an option that's going to go over well.

Not to misunderstand, you are planning for the worst here. If undead break free and start attacking people they're going to no longer even BE under his control. It's gonna to lead to people having to send them even less safely than it normally happens, because what else would they do if undead were attacking people in town?

We're asking for help here. Ideas, thoughts, ways to solve this problem so it doesn't get too that point... and permission to save people's lives if it does. Sending some of them is already a bad idea, you'd rather not do it at all, but you're going to need more ideas for other things you can do to mitigate this. He's been alive for so long, does he have anything he thinks could help?

“True, but we’ve been working in good faith to help you and I came here to ask your permission. Even sending the undead is risky: the spellcasting might accelerate the awakening and could release spite if we’re not careful. But if you had less of an army to maintain, it would be easier to conserve mana, right?” Kol feels himself sweating, his nails digging into the surface of the table.

“That-“ Rodwin glares, “I am not prepared to allow yet. With further shows of good faith, however, I will consider it. I’m not unsympathetic, but I’m also not a fool: I know how easily good intentions turn when the power balance shifts. The army isn’t just a part of my lord’s legacy, its an important barganing chip in these discussions.”

Kol sags: frustrated but understanding the devil’s position. “We just need some way of buying more time and I’m looking for options. Would it be possible to move the bargast somewhere where the city isn’t in immediate danger?”

The fallen fey is silent for some time as he assesses this request. “That will take time... and a considerable amount of magical resources. If you can promise me compensation to restore the expenditure, then I will move the bargast.”

Promise is a strong word. We have a plan, but there are no guarantees of success. We are going to enter the ethereal plane, find the Font of the Fates, draw mana from it, and bring it back. Is that good enough?

Why has nobody played the angel's advocate here?

Press on and request a compromise; there are adventurers in the city, but the horde is too strong. Rodwin moved the Barghest of his own volition, not his lord's, and thus while the loyalty of the army is subject to his lord, the consequences of moving the Barghest here in the first place is his.

Move it just a few hundred meters away, enough to give the citizens warning and any deserters a longer path so they can be picked off and arrested by hunting parties before the living get hurt. He can get paid in mana for his troubles.

If he's talking about mana, we're already working on a plan for that. If it works it should fix the energy expended. Maybe you should mention that you're going to perform the ritual required to become guardians for him.

...if it doesn't work, none of this will be your problem anymore. Unfortunately.

we believe we have a source (and if there's a timeframe on that, we should make it known, with a reasonable leeway). So if that would keep everything safer, sounds like a fair deal, for now.

Having said that, any undead that become a threat to the living will be dealt with. We'll do everything we can to prevent a war, but we have to protect our people above all else.

Kol breathes a little easier and nods, “Agreed. Thank you. We'll get you the mana needed soon, but it'll take time to arrange. How long will it take you to prepare to move the bargast?”

“A week at most. Have your people choose a more suitable location, but I will still require a reasonable proximity to the city.”

“Okay. I’ll let them know. That also gives us time to warn the city. The last thing we need is panic running through the citizens. Thank you, Rodwin. This went... better than I hoped.” Kol stands and shakes the devil’s hand.

Casey, Gabe and Kol catch each other’s expressions and, in unspoken agreement, lead one another to the bedroom to unwind after a long, exhausting day.

The mice strip down without ceremony and pile into bed, cuddling up against one another for love and support. They sigh as the stress leaves their minds, content to share one another’s bodies.

Casey rolls over and feels Gabe taking her from behind, or maybe its Kol? No, she can hear Gabe’s breathy panting in her ear as he grinds his hips against her. He’s inside her, spreading her tight passage in achingly slow thrusts, feeling how wet she is for his love. She moans for him, knowing how eager he is to please.

Kol sidles up beside them and the mice oblige him. First is Casey, sucking gently as his cock pumps back and forth across her tongue. She’s careful: using her free hand to hold him steady as she finds all of the best angles to welcome him.

Gabe trades with her for a bit, moaning encouragement as Kol reaches behind his head and thrusts into his eager mouth. Kol’s thumb teases the edge of Gabe’s ear, knowing how sensitive it is, and he’s rewarded with a gleeful, if muffled, squeak. Casey pauses them to kiss Gabe; swapping the salty taste of precum between one another.

Kol crawls over the sheets and a moment later Casey feels a heavy thrust from behind her. She feels Kol’s arms wrap around Gabe’s waist and thrust again as he takes the middle mouse in a smooth, easy motion. She grins and pushes back from her prone position, ensuring Gabe is rocked back and forth by the pair.

Gabe squeaks helplessly between the two. Caught between the inviting slickness of Casey’s pussy and the thumping pressure of Kol’s cock, he senselessly babbles his adoration. Sandwiched between his partners, he feels utterly adrift in a sea of pleasure.

Kol and Gabe grind against each other hungrily, their shafts slipping and bumping in the tight space between their hips. Their breath hitches: the tendrils are pumping faster, coiling inside their targets and pummeling their prostates. Gabe and Kol’s needy chorus hits a rising pitch as they’re catapulted over the edge. Warmth pools in the tight space between them, their seed spreading across panting bellies with each orgasmic spasm. Casey closes her eyes, concentrating on the exhilarating sensation of being filled by both partners. Kol in front, setting an even pace, grunts with exertion every time he thrusts. He pistons in, letting her weight drop onto his full length with a satisfying slap of hips. His cock is so familiar, rubbing her just the right way as he angles in and out. So sensitive and a little sore but feeling amazing! Gabe is easy and gentle with his movements, knowing just how much his partner loves anal when done right. He looks down at her upturned tail and watches it twitch with delight as the head of his cock tugs at her ring. The two boys work in a gentle, measured rhythm as the slap and pant of three bodies fucking in the moonlight grows heavier.

The boys feel her tightening around them and start pounding: this is it. Working themselves into a sweat as they edge themselves closer.

The synchronicity ends as, panting and clenching, Gabe and Kol pound her between them. The furious slap of hips and thighs punctuates her throaty moans as she starts to cum. Casey’s orgasm crashing into another and another as they work her over. Her mind goes blank, hanging forever in the white hot moment of being utterly fucked. She cries out: telling them not to stop.
