Simon rouses the rest of the party. They sneak out of the Mayor's office, down the hall and into Tweed's office.

It appears Tweed got bored of waiting for the quest to continue as also, he's sleeping like a baby.

Simon bids the shocked politician good day and storms out of city hall, Io and Slater trailing behind.

They arrive at the shopping area of town. Numerous stores of varying degrees of usefulness line this flagstone street. Stores that could actually be helpful include:

Hardware
Weapons
Electronics
Bookstore
Clothing

There are also many other shops that are not likely useful as well, such as the overpriced fancy candy shop that Io is gaping at.

Serious question. Do any of you know how to do any form of fighting at all?

If not, I'd suggest a crossbow. That doesn't take a lot of skill to wield and you can threaten people with it. Plus Slater can probably maintain it. He's gotta be great with machines to keep himself running.
>>
No. 9797 ID: f373c2

Consider: If we have an appropriate weapon, we can hunt for food. If we can hunt for food, we don't have to buy as much and can save that money for other things.

I second asking for a crossbow, for the aforementioned reason and because the ammo is cheaper and easier to improvise than bullets.

Nobody in the party has any real weapons skill, so they decide on getting an easy-to-use crossbow.

Simon: "We would like to know more about the types of crossbows you carry."
Veteran: "Well, I got two sizes of crossbow here. Darters are small, one handed weapons that're light an' easy to carry. Not very powerful though. Arbalests are a spot heavier, but they can punch through mos' armor an' are more accurate. Bof' types can either be manually reloaded, reloaded by a crank or automatically reloaded by a motor."

Veteran: "Also, each size crossbow can use all sortsa bolts. Normal, explosive, chemical, an' flare. I managed to get my hands on a few of grappling hook bolts for the Arbalest an' a handful of these rocket bolts for the Darter. Hi-tech stuff, I hear that the Condottieri Mercenaries make these beatuies themselves."
>>
No. 9881 ID: 0dcc29

My suggestion would be:

1 Arbalest w/ 2 Grappling Bolts and 10 Normal Bolts
4 Crank Loading Crossbows w/ 16 Tranq rounds, 4 Explosive rounds and 40 Normal rounds.

In case we can't afford that much:
1 Arbalest w/ 2 Grapple Bolts
2 Crossbows w/ 6 Tranq Rounds and 20 Normal rounds

Traq rounds are very important. System shock 1 taught me that much.

Guys, don't blow all our money on ammunition. I was thinking some regular darts and 2-3 explosive ones, to do Puzzle Solving and to threaten a guy. (Picture Simon with his big stupid smiley on while pointing an explosive crossbow bolt at a guy)

We need most of our money for food and equipment. (I confess, I'm not sure what equipment we'll need, but I bet we'll need some)
>>
No. 9918 ID: 0dcc29

>>9916
I think i might still have my pro-gamer face on, but removing some of the regular bolts for an explosive bolt or two for puzzle 'solving' purposes sounds like a good idea. The reason why i want to spend so much is purely to get us outfitted for a long while, after all ammo = loot = even more money. We don't even know when we'll next see a town (as dramatic as that sounds)
>>
No. 9925 ID: f373c2

Buy two small hand-reloading crossbows. For ammo:

11 normal darts (22)
2 explosive darts (20)
4 tranquilizers (48)
2 flares (10)

Which comes to a total of 200.
>>
No. 9928 ID: 780e08

I'd say get 4 or 5 each of the explosive and flare bolts. They could really come in handy.

Though I have no idea what reloading a crossbow entails, how useful would having cranks be?
>>
No. 9929 ID: f373c2

Another issue: our next destination is the city of Mahbuht. We might have a chance to earn more money there. On the other hand, we might not, and even if we do, it could waste some time.

We could buy a month's worth of food with 300 dollars, leaving us with 200 for other supplies. On the other hand, we could spend some of our food money on other things, on the assumption that we'll get more food or money later in the month. How much are we willing to dip into it?
>>
No. 9931 ID: f373c2

>>9928
Reloading a crossbow entails pulling back the string and placing another bolt in. The crank just makes it easier to pull the string back. I'd recommend getting one, since our party consists of astronomers and a butler, except they're almost twice the price of the hand-reloaded ones.

A little lesson in Clockwork physiology: Clockworks need the occasional spot of oil in their joints to ensure ease of movement. Clockworks also consume a bit of oil when their internal components and brain gears need greasing, which gives effects similar alcohol.

Clockworks bizzarely do not need oil (or anything else for that matter) for nourishment, as their bodies have mechanisms that seem to create energy from nothing. Considering how often the laws of physics get broken in Caelum, this phenomena is not awfully suprising.

Right, while you're busy deciding on that, the Crossbows and ammo will be suspended in a state of quantum entanglement until you decide who gets which weapons.

For now, the party heads on the to Grocery store. It's pretty empty, which is understandable considering that most of the denizens of the town don't eat food.

Io: "Do you know why someone might have done this?"
Female Arid: "Nobody knows, but the news said that it was probably a pirate flyer."
Simon: "Hmm... what would pirates have to gain from this?"
Fez Arid: "I think they were hired guns, maybe by some corporation trying to shut down the airship trade here."
Female Arid: "I don't think so, I believe the pirates wanted to distract the security airships with this attack so they can pick off the merchant ships."
Simon: "So... you don't know who did it at all?"
Female Arid: "No, all we have is wild guesses. The police are baffled."
Io: "Do you think the tower will be okay?"
Fez Arid: "Sure! The thing is built like a fortress. I bet they won't reopen the tower for a long while though, looking at all the damage it took."

Just to be sure, they questioned a few more people in the streets. The consensus was the same, though: Pirates did it, nobody knows why, and the tower is closed for a while.

The author, Rob Oddard, is apparently from the Weaponsmith's Guild located in the Bumbling Rocks south of the Sear. He seems to have had a "personal" grudge against Sculptor. Most of the book is simply the diary of an insane old man babbling about how Sculptor ruined all of his flower garden, but in one chapter he actually outlines a device he created that could destroy a star, something what he would've used to get revenge for his poor ruined roses.

Rob apparently was gifted with more smarts than sanity, because his blueprints appear flawless to Simon's eye. It is a large rocket with an attached warhead that contains a large quantity of enriched Vacuum ore. A missile of this magnitude could cause a star to collapse upon itself, or rip a continent in half.

It's just so goddamn insane that it HAS to work. Maybe...

The problem is that there is no way Simon and his compatriots can create a missile like that in time, even if they had the money.

It appears that Simon and company will have to collect a good amount of highly illegal Vacuum ore, get Oddard's rocket from the Weaponsmith's Guildhall and then find a good place to launch it from all within 26 days while eluding the Dokdokdokdokdok secret police.

Oh boy.

Book check'd out! An unsettlingly large librarian nags Simon before handing him back the book.

Librarian: "Now listen here, I don't trust you foreigner fellows more than I can throw you. I see books missing all the time and people never showing up to pay the fine so if I don't have this book returned within a month I'm going to hunt you down and skin you like a-"
Simon: "Yeah sir or madam, if we don't hand back the book by then that means everyone probably would have been incinerated by then. Could we skip the chatter so we can get back to saving the world?"
Librarian: "Hrrrmph."

Simon show the plans to Io.

Simon: "So, what do you think of this?"
Io: "This... this is the most insane, idiotic, dangerous and hopeless plan ever, you know that Simon?"
Simon: "Well I-"
Io: "But the way I see it is that this is the only hope we've got."
Simon: "Woo! How about you Slater?"
Slater: "I will follow you to the edge of the world, Sir."
Simon: "We can't go home yet you silly machine!"
Slater: "What I meant Sir was... nevermind."

Simon "borrows" a map from the library and circles where the Guildhall is, where they can find the ore and where his house is. They are all a fair distance away. Walking all the way would take too much time, and Mahbuht's airship tower is kaput. Also, they probably will need to find a way to get some more money.

Simon decides that he still could be of use though. He asks the salesman to peddle his goods in a position as to drive people away from his competition's stand and onto his. Already a crowd is gathering near their stall, while the rather miffed charlatan next door is receiving no patrons.

Simon and Io sell their fortunes at $10. They stick to your advice and try to make their patrons feel better about themselves by blaming their misfortune on various stars, mostly Volans. Most people seem to enjoy Simon and Io's rants, and a few actually seem to express genuine concern about their fate.

They continue with their buisness until about an hour before the bazaar closes, when virtually everyone who wanted to have their fortune has already recieved it. In total, Simon and Io bagged a rather respectable $270, bringing their total to $287.

Most of the other stalls are still left open, if you think the party needs to buy anything. The stalls remaining open are:

Desert garb may come in handy, but drinks are already included in their rations and if they decide to take a scorpion to Manham they will almost certainly be provided with refreshments.

Simon: "What's that flying thingy, and the thing that is trying to eat my boss?"
Salesman: "The flying thing is an Anvilfly. It's pretty smart and can understand basic verbal commands, but it's touchy and stings if you piss it off. The chompy thing is a Ravenite. Its a territorial creature and also will try to eat pretty much anything in its path. If it tries to eat something you don't want it to, gently kick it in the side of the head, that should discourage him. It also can headbutt you with its bony skullthing if it feels especially threatened, which probably could break a bone if you're unlucky."
Simon: "Interesting. I think we should look around a bit more before deciding to buy one of your pets though."
Salesman: "I'm going be closing pretty soon, so don't take long."

They visit the electronics store. Most of the stuff there is either gone or way too expensive for them. The things that lie within their price range include:

Flashlight - $5
Bullhorn - $20

Slater isn't leaking oil at the moment, and cloth won't really help stop the loss of pressure.

The party takes the items and whatever darts that haven't broken. Their current weapon loadout is 1 WRENCH, 1 MACHETE, 2 DAGGERS, 1 AXE, 1 AUTO-DARTER, 1 CRANEQUIN DARTER, 18 NORMAL DARTS, 2 each of EXPLOSIVE, FLARE and TRANQUILIZER DARTS, 8 PLASTIC DARTS and 1 MANUAL ARBALEST with 1 GRAPPLING HOOK BOLT.

They walk up the stairs to the next room. Two poorly aimed bolts coming from a pair of pirates force them to take cover. This room is appears to be a storage room, with a door leading outside on the right and what appears to be the loader for the ship's Auto-Ballista on the left.

They find some PARACHUTES in one of the small crates, along with AIRSHIP REPAIR PARTS and lots of AUTO-BALLISTA JAVELINS in the other small crate, and a some ILLEGAL DRUGS lying at the bottom of the big crate.

Hmm. Well we can either press onward and try to gain control of the ship, but none of us know how to fly it and we're stranded over the ocean.

OR, we can hole up here and make anyone who tries to approach this portion of the ship into a pincushion. Seeing as there are 3 of us, who can sleep in shifts and check for when we are above land, I suggest holing up for now. Make sure at least one of you is on guard at all times.

...Unless Slater's injury is a pressing concern, in which case we'd do best to keep moving and try to get him some help.

tl;dr: Hole up here unless that means Slater would bleed to death.

a) Hide indefinitely.

Unknown controls? Aww, can't be too bad to mess with them if you're screwed otherwise.
Can't stop the engines? Break them.
Can't go down? Then shoot a hole and you can land, just can't take off again.
Something else?

But that's something to worry about after crossing Mare Minoris and reaching a good destination, not now.
>>
No. 53314 ID: 6c80cf

>>53292

Er... why not? Airships maintain themselves in the air via the amount of heated gas in their containers vs. their ballast.

All it would require would be slowly lowering the temperature of the gas. Such a landing would be very gentle. However...

The current design of the airship is such that if it lost enough pressure to fully land upon the ground, it's bag would likely be caught in the propellers without further aid from ground crews or special landing areas.

This is all, however, a moot point.

There are a group of (what you must assume are enemies) coming to get you. Unless this airship is heavily armed for airship-to-airship combat in such a way as to be easily run by three people...

You should probably get your bearings and run away.
>>
No. 53338 ID: 7eda8b

Indeed. This isn't a heavier-than-air craft. You should just be able to coax it down. Worst case scenario, you'll bust the ship, but probably walk away.

Io: "Well, steering is easy enough because all it seems to entail is turning this wheel around and looking at this compass. Landing would probably require slowing down, changing altitude and manipulating engine power and stuff I have no idea how to do. There's like a hundred buttons here!"
Simon: "Just press random buttons until you figure out something works. If you can't figure that out, then I guess we can just smash the engines to slow us down and shoot the envelope to lower the altitude."
Io: "That's crazy! HALF OF EVERYTHING YOU SAY IS ABSOLUTELY CRAZY!"

About 12 near death crashes and a few lost lunches later, Io manages to figure out the controls enough to land, so long as there is sufficient open ground.

They haven't caught sight of the pursuers the pirate was talking about, so it is fairly safe to assume that this airship is faster than theirs.

Slater turns on the computer. Unfortunately, this particular computer doesn't have access to much important data, all there is is a spreadsheet that says the last day people the guildhall was in use was over twenty years ago. Which is odd, because this computer seems newer than that.

Abandoned facilities never like making things very easy.
