Hello, Fen.
Do you really love her? How hard would it be to rescue her?

Also what role do you serve here? How badly are you needed? Or do we even stand a chance of convincing you not to go?
>>
No. 343529 ID: 40cb26

Yes! Err no! You're going to try! To rescue, not get killed! And you aren't really abandoning anyone because... uhm, we'll you're going to try to come back. But you still won't be here. Oh well. Maybe you can bring back fantastic wealth and power or at least some neat travel gifts.

Tell your whiny friend that you'll be careful, come back alive and make it up to everyone somehow. Then scram before more drama comes up.

Erg, all of these impulses of mine are acting up! Second guessing myself and forgetting all kinds of things!

Yes, I really love her. Enough to risk my life over this, even though it'll be incredibly difficult to try and take her back from some damn noble! To remind myself... in my village, aside from basic foraging and hunting, I'm a fighter. I protect the village, as we're smack inbetween contested area, yet belong to neither empire. And this failure to protect her.. I have to redeem myself, as well. I'm somewhat needed here, but my siblings are better fighters anyway. They can take care of themselves.

That 'whiny friend' was my whiny sister, Kiki. I'm leaving before she gets more people to hold me back.

That noble is likely hightailing it back to his capital, several days at most of travel. I hope to catch up, but I have to move quickly. They have mounts.

I hope to catch up, because they must have wagons to transport slaves, so they can't go that fast. But I hear that the mounts are mountains of stamina. In other words, I can catch up if I hurry, but if I wait too long, I can't hope to catch up with their slow but steady pace.

Her name is Lily, and she is more beautiful than her namesake.

I've never rode a mount, before. They only come from the north, and we haven't been able to get our hands on one, or know how to take care of it.

It's not hard to find a wagon, here. But this escort is too small, it must be a straggler.

>"Wahhhh!"

A baby? It sounds like they've probably got a whole family in this one. If I rescue them, then the main caravan may get wise that someone is tailing them. On the other hand, I don't care one bit for slavery as a whole.

Here's a count to what I've got. One scimitar, the clothes on my back, and rations. In my haste, I couldn't get a proper assortment of gear.

Kill the animals? Then I'll have two fighters on me, and have rescued no one. In any case, these mounts are rather slow. They can simply go on for days tirelessly, which makes them useful. They're running speed, while not attached to a cart, isn't much faster than a regular kobold can run.

What are they even doing with spears? Their friends are up ahead, no doubt about it.

"Can you survive on your own, out here?"

>"No. We don't know what we can and can't hunt, out here."

Damnit, damnit. Harboring slaves is a criminal offense, and these collars mark them as such. I'm sure my family is angry at me already, but I have no choice!

"There's a village a little walk down this path. Please go there, tell them Fen sent you."

>"Thank you!" The woman speaks up. "I don't know where we'll be when you're back, but if we can repay you, we'll gladly do it! My name is Takala, my husband here is Kachradis, and our only remaining child is Cheelop. We hope to see you again, thank you, thank you!"

>"If you're after more slaves, the slave drivers said they were going to rest for a night at the next town. You may want to do what you've got to do at that town. Otherwise, pass them entirely and ambush them in the forest again." says Kachradis.

Harboring slaves is a crime you say? And you can enslave any ol' person because these are obviously kobold slavers slaving their own race. I say we slap a slave collar on the noble and call him our slave. Law can't say shit, no one can harbor him, bitch would be ours legally.

We shall beat him regularly like the dog he is. Oh yes, we will sink that low because the revenge will be so sweet and worth the morality hit. Hmm, shit this planned revenge is already so deliciously conceivably my cheeks are already hurting from sweetness, my goodness.

Well I'll be damned.

Ambushing them at a later point could get you the element of surprise again but they would also be alert... and may have hired more guards from town. Using stealth when they're in town could work but they could set a trap for you... and wouldn't you have to worry about the town guard then too?

There are problems with both approaches... In town we could set up a distraction, though. So we could do that.

What an odd thought, but getting it twice...

"Hey! Repay me by teaching your daughter there's no excuse to stand idle while others suffer!"

They look at me oddly, but nod and go on their way.

Back to business. I'm sure the empire has some nuances about slavery that protects nobles. Believe me, I'd love to repay him for this. I'm honestly not sure how their law works, if they even have any written, established law. It could just be half anarchy for all I know. Neither empire has an army, proper. Simply people seeking glory, by harassing the other side. And the villages that are stuck inbetween, where borders aren't established, get harassed by both. That's why we're tough.

I'll go into town and try to lay low. I hope letting the driver live wasn't a mistake.

This is a sneaking operation.
Sneak up behind a guard, slit their throat BELOW the vocal chords, then hide the body somewhere.
Start with any guards outside, then free the animals before making your way into the town. Avoid the gates since people love to watch obvious entrances.
Start freeing the slaves as you come across them, but tell them to stay where they are until you give the signal to flee - don't tell them what it is, just that they'll know it when they see it. Once you find your beloved and/or are spotted by the guards and/or have freed all the slaves, set the wall on fire somewhere away from your escape route.
>>

If we can't enslave the noble then we burn the entire fortress down after we free the slaves. Or break his bones one at a time and make him beg for mercy, heal him right up, then selling him into slavery out of the kobold empire and into the human one.

Then we dissolve the kobold empire. Maybe slaughter the noble's family too. Maybe set up a democracy. Who knows.

Sneaking sounds like a good option, to sabotage the wagons. It will at least slow them down. I'm not familiar with wagons, though. How to I sabatoge it, without simply breaking it loudly...?

They haven't killed you yet. They must have other plans for you. Likely making you into a slave to replace the ones you released.

Your next action depends on how ballsy you are and how many spear dudes there are coming after you. You *could* fight the guards, hoping that the bowmen will not open fire while they have a chance to hit their own men. Then after the guards on the ground are dead, grab a corpse and use it to cover your back while you retreat. But if there's more than 2 dudes on foot you're doomed.

Or you could just submit and let them put you in chains, hoping you have a chance to escape later, or at the very least get sold to the same guy that Lily does.

"F.. Fen."

Afterall, she is a thief as well. Her stolen good... my heart. It seems we are in contest, and she would never forgive me should I kill you or send you off to the mines, never to see the light of day. Yet, if there was an alternative, to get my money's worth, and get you out of the picture all while attempting to win Lily's heart... ah, yes. Let's say that there is a tournament in the capital town, soon. Slaves are allowed to enter, as it so happens. The winner may choose from a variety of prizes, be it fortunes, land, many custom requests within reason, and the freedom of particular slaves. Alas, I am powerless to prevent you from entering, as it is a slaves right, as the laws that govern us state that all are free to engage in ceremonial combat. Should you enter, it would entirely be your choosing, and Lily would have to admit that you entered yourself. Oh, and the battles are to the death, as well. Now, you are my new slave, yes? ask that, while the man's job is to keep you out of trouble, does he have any feelings or loyalty towards your "noble master"? Also ask if you can spend your wish on making the noble your slave and transfer all his property to you? Odds are the king is a jolly fellow or a wicked prankster and probably hates the pretentious fuck of a master you have as much as you and would gladly grant it, if I have my tropes right.

wait better idea that is more probable to be successful
a wish for a duel to the death with your master in the arena where if you win you get his property and title. Definitely potentially entertaining for the whole crowd and isn't my obsessant idea with making the noble a slave.

>"Of course, of course, Sir! I would expect that answer as well, given what is on the line."

"Do I have to kill? What if my opponent is unconscious or unable to fight anymore?"

>"Ah, that, sir, is up to the audience! Usually they wish for death, but if the loser has won the audience's appreciation, they may not. Now, you may always refuse, but the penalties for going against the audience are often harsh, from simple floggings to taking off a digit or two. It all depends on how upset the audience is over it."

"What about your loyalty? Are you loyal to my "Noble Master?"

>"Ah, Sir, although Lord Shup may be my superior in ways, the Dragon Knights are a clan of warriors directly under the king himself, and so while Lord Shup is allowed to give me orders, if I believe in any way that it is against the King's wishes, I may disobey without treason. Here is your scimitar, which as I understand, Sir, is your favored weapon."

"Yes. What else can you train me in? Any magic?"

>"Sir, do not get ahead of yourself. I should make sure you are a master of the martial arts. Two weeks are far too short, I'm afraid, to teach any magic that will be of any use in time. I will teach you as much as I can, in order to ward off a variety of assaults."

I know the issue of memories. I'm too young, but my parents and older siblings told me about how everyone woke up, and had no idea who they were or where they came from. They only knew their skills and other academic facts. This was just over a decade ago. It didn't take long at all for people to grab power, whether by plain force or by claim that they were the King in their past life. I was told it was chaos in those first few months, with anyone thinking they were worth a coin trying to seize power. It has settled down by now, and the current factions are relatively established, so it doesn't get brought up much. My memories are fine, being born soon after this.

"What is your name?"

As much as I want to bring him out, it'll take time I may not have to break both his wall and my own.

He holds sway, too much sway, against other royalty as well. Don't trust anyone. Don't tell anyone you've seen me. If you must fight in the tournament, don't show up till the first fight. If it's anything like the previous years, your fight is still scheduled, and you won't be disqualified until you don't show up in time for the fight. Borrow the sword for use in both moving the light onto the gem AND for combat! We will need a new weapon, after all, for the fight. That old scimitar is not as nice as those.

Ask the armor if you may take the sword in order to use it to both get to the arena and to kill every living creature that dares challenge you.

>"Ah! It is you, Sir! As I said, I smelled a link to the war god, and this drew me in. I did not actually know it was you. This is... this is actually awkward, I must apologize. But I must apologize twice most profusely! After you passed out, Lord Shup had found out I was training you! While there are no rules against that, Lord Shup brought you away. There are no rules against that, either, so long as he does not prevent your first match. I'm afraid that despite my altercations and discontent over it, the King ruled Lord Shup in the right, and I was forbidden to intervene. Are you shaking? Did I not teach you to show no true weakness? You are too open a book, Sir!"

"I can't help it! Divine links? I think I just got cursed!"

>"Oh, Sir, many would consider it a curse, many a blessing. I am amazed though, not many can even find a shrine, let alone get a response. If I am not mistaken, you are now an agent of death. You must either deliver death in his name, or people will die around you regardless. Yet, in return, you may yet have a chance in the tournament!... oh! That isn't to say you had no chance before. But now you have a more... tangible chance, one might say. Now then, Sir, what would you like to do?"

So your options are to kill, die, or just let people around you die anyway? He sure gives pleasant blessings. Maybe we can get Lily to become an agent of life to balance you out? We'd have to find a shrine for that, though.

...okay, I see what happened. The sword had nothing to do with the curse/blessing. The gem was a ritualistic type thing. You're supposed to go pray at the shrine and then touch the gem when it's lit at the right time of day (which would be noon, I guess) to receive the blessing/curse. So you mistakenly performed an ancient ritual.

Ask if he knows if this kind of thing can be reversed. It'd be nice at the tournament but afterwards it would be a serious problem! Unless you took a job where you're expected to deal death regularly, anyway.

"This is.. these are terrible options! I don't want to kill!"

Or, perhaps, you may ask for divine intervention from another, but that may simply replace your state with something better, worse or the same. But do not lose hope, Sir! I promise you on my word, it is not a fate-sealing action! Now, I must ask you, would you like to continue having me teach you? Several days go by, occasionally training, occasionally I hunt in somewhat dangerous areas after telling Kip to try not to get suspicion. He gives me a rough training regiment outside of his time that I try to uphold, and it seems to be focused on balance and agility over strength! That chill has gotten stronger. I think the war god is getting tired of me hunting only lesser beings.

>"Hello again, Sir. It is time for the tournament, tomorrow. I am glad you are sticking to such a rigorous exercise on your own. I hope you are ready. Your first opponent is easy enough. A old warlord, who once ravaged his way through the land unstopped until yours truly put an end to that. Now, he wishes for a sizeable pack of marauders to lay waste to the southern Petal Kingdom. Despite it is for the sake of our King's goal of the greater good of uniting all of the kobolds, I question his decision. It undermines my own efforts if I may state so selfishly, and I do hope you are able to put a stop to him. It will make a good sacrifice to the God of War, I am certain! I shall lead you to the battleground, but we do have time to spare. You feel well, I hope?"

"I feel confident about this!"

>"Excellent, Sir! Put on this cloak, as your aura would be most unnerving to most through town, as strong as it appears now. It would be best to save such a display inside of the arena. Also, you once came up in conversation with our King. He states that if you wish for a duel, he would allow it, but only if Lord Shup also agreed. Therefore, you would need either leverage against him, or have something for him should he win. I am a mere subject of politics, and I'm sorry to report I have no suggestions on the matter."

We got leverage. The Bear. Dirty little secret. It's just that if it is his bastard son, holy shit he is going to want to keep that under raps. He's not allowed to kill you before your matches, and if he doesn't accept the duel, then you will merely wish for freedom and tell everyone the secret. So that means the only way to keep you quiet legally would be death in a duel. Tell Kip the secret now and as a favor, should you die outside of the duel or have no means to tell of the secret due to events before the duel, to spread the secret. It is possibleto quickly heal flesh wounds, and some of our stronger healers can even mend bones in short time, but should you receive a mortal wound, not even magic will help!"

"Tell me I get a break, Kip?"

>"Haha, of course! This is a tournament, not a gauntlet! It is a standard bracket tournament with 64 contestants. Therefore, you have 5 matches to go. These are spread out over a full week, therefore, you have the rest of the day off as well as early tomorrow. You still have much to learn. A simple punch in the face weakened you far too much! However, at the same time, Sir, our dilemma with Lord Shup may require your attentions, if you wish to investigate."

I'll be sure to have a backup weapon, and do a few practice blocks with a shield to get the hang of using one again. After a nap and rest in my tournament room, I'm ready to investigate.

"Kip, I want to look into Lord Shup, because Lily is my first priority! I want to find out who Ted is, as well."

>"Alright, Sir. Also, while you were resting, I saw to the door. Lots of people wanted to thank you for the warlord's defeat, and many gifts were given. Food too, sir, but I would suggest I taste test anything, prior to eating. There are also some valuable trinkets and, after my count, 500 gold coins."

"Oh! That was very nice of them. I have to stay focused, though. Is it possible for someone to imitate the king?"

>"I have never seen anything like it, but I would not rule it out, Sir."

"Let's have a password, just in case. If we suspect one another of being a fake, the password will be... uh, "broken scimitar."

>"Very well, Sir. Remember, these tournament walls are a safe zone for you, as these walls are sanctioned for slaves. Upon leaving, you are fair game for capturing alive. My duty as bodyguard may allow me to supersede such an action, but only if you stay close. My duties are also to make sure you stay out of trouble, I'm afraid, so I must insist you not do anything rash, until we have concrete evidence of treason or the like. It would be nice, Sir, if we had someone who's hands were not so tied that we could trust, alas, my job does not allow for many friends."

I think moving through the shrine is an option, but I would like a backup in case it's still like it was when I left.

ugh, no, that's not a suitable password system. The password you'll say is Broken Scimitar, he gets to choose his own so it's easy to remember. Like say if he is an imposter and he asks for password first, you say Broken Scimitar if it's a password for both of you, then the fake knows the password too and ruins the whole thing.
Perhaps we might also come up with trap passwords as well, in case one of us is interrogated. Have the interrogated give the trap password if he can't hold it due to torture or truth serums. If the trap password comes up when asked for it, then we know a rescue is likely in order.

If we can't go through the shrine, we'll need disguises to go through guards and stuff.

A password system can only function with call-and-response; that is, if one of you suspects something or just feels like testing you use a certain phrase in conversation, and the other responds with a prearranged response phrase. Having only one phrase means that it's all but impossible to test for identity without giving away that you are testing for identity, which could get you killed if there's actually an impostor present.

So do better.

I have to admit, I'm increasingly wondering why the heck Kip is around us anyway. Why do we even rate a Dragon Knight bodyguard? Shouldn't he be off guarding someone or something important, and we get nothing or a mediocre bodyguard as is proportionate to our importance?

It has its flaws, but it might be better than nothing!

"What's that blue stuff on your helmet? And speaking of that, can I see your face?"

>"Ah, my apologies for not appearing in pristine condition, sir! We dragon knights don't have a sterling reputation, and often give the King a bad name to his otherwise respectable name. It is not terribly uncommon to have fruit thrown at us by those who dare. I'm afraid I must decline taking off my helmet as well, sir. The life of a dragon knight is very ritualistic, and we are forbidden to take our armor off except on brief leaves. It is imbued as though it was part of us, and regenerates like a body heals."

"Why are you with me? Don't misunderstand, I don't know what I'd do without you, but aren't you kind of high quality to be guarding me?"

>"Sir, each contestant gets a single dragon knight bodyguard, as it is considered very important that the contestants are kept safe to be able to fight in the arena. It is nothing special. It is still an honor to serve you to the limit that I may, if I may add."

Alright, we're going to have to scout around Shup's building because maybe we'll find a better entrance or window. Does Kip have any ideas? We might not have to get complex if we can dig a bit better... wait, the sunlight hole! It looked big enough to pop right on through for a bold of your size! If we could find it... try and remember the long, narrow path you crawled through in the ground, following it should lead to the hole if the War God didn't magic it away.

"Well, I can't worry too much about it! Can you go into Lord Shup's estate?"

They had his favor, and had a shot to become the next king should a tragedy come, which of course happened. Since there couldn't be two kings, the two siblings fought one another in the yearly tournament, to be declared the heir to the throne. The younger brother had the God of War's aura, but in the end, could not bring himself to kill a sibling. The other did not have that reservation, and struck him down, becoming that year's champion, and soon to be king. So, we need to figure out if Kip swore loyalty to the right kobold.

Offer to hear each person's story in private. The aura should be dampened now, right?

"Could I hear each of your stories in private?"

>"Young fool! I would not tell you my story, I do not know if I can trust you any more than this dragon knight!"

"In that case, Kip, if not tell when you told your oath, then could you tell of your earliest achievements?"

>"Risky, sir, but I cannot imagine this is an imposter who also has the king's memories, and is locked away. It is farfetched, therefore... Ted, I slew the young chieftain of the northern mountains, one year after the amnesia."

>".... you're!..."

He whispers something, I can't make it out.

>"Yes, my Liege, that is what I said to you afterwards. And since you know who I am, I will believe you to be the king. I am ready to serve."

>"I just need you to stay quiet about all of this! Only make you move if you can discredit both the fake king, and Shup! They must have plenty of enemies. Gather who you can, they must have plenty of secrets and motivations."

there is something i would like to ask the king now that we have his ear. assuming he was in charge since the amnesia, why does he allow slavery in his kingdom? why the hell does he think its ok to just grab some poor shmuck and tell them that there property now and not a person? and if he gives some bullshit excuse about strength justifying it point out that by that logic you should be sporting shup's puppet since he's in the stronger position right now. According to Momo, he wasn't always the king, he got the first king's favor to become heir. That doesn't mean this thought doesn't have bearing, but I don't want to get on their bad side right now!

"Do you know any loyalists, Ted?"

>"A few, but I do not know if they live. Also, I fear that the imposter has my memories as well, so it would be difficult to prove to anyone I am the king if I resurface. It would simply throw everything in turmoil."

"Could it be your brother?"

>"No, it certainly is not. I slew my brother in honorable combat, and he would break his word no sooner than I. Now, you should both go. Shup has not relocated me, simply because this is by far the most secure cell block that isn't occupied heavily already. I was surprised, when they had not seen the wall was broken. I'm not sure how you cleaned your tracks, Fen, but it sounds like you are very lucky. Guards come frequently now to check on us, it will not be long. Leave, and do not come back for some time. I am not sure what measures Shup will take after he finds this mess."

>"If I may agree, Sir, you should prepare for your next opponent. Perhaps we should check on who it is, and prepare accordingly, unless there is anything quick you would like to do, here?"

Break the king out.
Once this mess is seen he'll know that somebody has been in here, meaning that either a new person knows his secret or you came back. Either one will prompt action of the very rash variety, which means the king will be relocated or executed.
Naturally you would need to strike before word passes to the imposter, meaning that you would need to bring him some place secure while Kip goes to request a private audience with the fake king over "matters of national security", strikes him down, hides the body, then comes to retrieve the real king.
Ideally you would have Shup become aware of what has transpired around the time a squad of dragon knights is skewering him for treason.

"Ted, I'll get you out, and Kip, can you kill the King and replace him with Ted?"

>"There a guard coming in a few minutes. The next minute, Shup will know. The minute after, the imposter will know. Kip isn't allowed to let you out of his sight, correct? He is already playing dangerous. That is far too risky, and will likely just end in both of your deaths."

"Alright. What about slavery? It's nasty business, why do you allow it?"

>"It was already allowed when I had become king, and it is not as though the king has limitless power, kid. What I did was make sure slaves had some basic rights, work and living standards, and such things so that it was not terribly cruel. The downside, is that often peasants revolted, complaining their lives were worse off than slaves."

>"Sir, I hear footsteps. We must get out of here."

>"Kip, do you trust Fen?"

>"My Liege, he means well, but I feel it would be too much to put more tasks on him.

"Come in!"

>"I'm back, Sir. Are you feeling well?"

"Yes, I feel fantastic! My aura is feeling dangerous, but I feel unstoppable!"

>"Good, sir! Today's opponent likely is not so challenging, but not to be underestimated! His name is Kachradis, a mammalian kobold that defeated a formidable opponent yesterday. There is more news, as well. This will be my last moment with you as bodyguard. I have received word from the imposter that I will be switching to another contender, and that contender's dragon knight will look over you. All right. Thank her for her help.

You probably want to wait for the main doors to be opened for someone else, and then slip in behind them. Executing guards in a highly visible area in order to get inside will only send up the alarm, and I don't think free-climbing that wall would be easy. Lord Shup's estate is a fairly major one; the main gate is probably used dozens of times a day. It shouldn't be too long, unless there's a service entrance somewhere- in which case you can slip inside that one the same way.

Do not get overconfident just because you're invisible. Unseen is not the same as undetected, and there are countermeasures to this sort of magic. Move with stealth and cunning.

Crap. Use your advantage of not being seen to knock the first guard out. Use the shield since it's right there. Then deal with the second guard similarly.

Well, if the second guard moves to investigate the hallway and you can slip through the door unnoticed then we could do that. Or we could just wait for someone else to come through. No telling how often that happens though, and the invisibility could wear off first.

That whole "She's better off living with a man that won't break her heart and die fighting" shtick just lost all merit. I'm sure she'd rather have a family who's head died fighting then some polygamous fucktard that manipulates emotions and hearts like that.

Though, say we get our wish and win the duel and get all his property, we'll leave the estate and most of the fortune to the wives because we really don't need most of that shit. Maybe make our village a little bit better, a small, modest estate of our own built out there as a noble. If Shup survives the duel and becomes our slave, he'll have to live in our village out of the estate, but his wives are free to visit him any time.

Perhaps.. perhaps if I warm up to him, and get on his good side, then he'll be willing to duel on my behalf, with the offer that if he wins, he gets both of us, and if he loses, he gives you everything. It's not a fair trade, but if he loves me half as much as he claims, then that could blind him to it. I won't enjoy performing deceit, but for you, I'll do it. Otherwise, I can still try and pry information out of him and feed it to you somehow. But I'm scared of him! Tell her we got it covered, she doesn't need to suck up to that smuck. There are plenty of ways to convince him. To be honest, with the right words, we wouldn't have to even mention his dirty little secret. It would be his last chance to have you die early and have Lily move on, whether or not he want Lily enough to be worth the risk doesn't matter, his pride wouldn't allow him to lose her to you if he has a chance of preventing it.

Tell her to be careful. Arranging for the duel could be our best bet, but... it requires us to win the tournament. Personally I'd like to somehow dig up enough of Shup's secrets for the tournament to not even matter before we have to duel Momo. Get enough info to expose the fake king and that'll let you get an early pass.

Claim to be married.
I don't know what your customs are for marriage, but you probably need a witness to it.

Alternatively, make use of the fact that the two of you are from outside the city and have a different culture. Work out a story where you claim that running away is part of your village's marriage rituals so it was an act of acceptance, and since she was new to the village it took her awhile to realize what you were doing. By Shup's own words he would have to let her live with you.

Marriage...? W-well, that seems farfetched, but...

"Lily, you don't need to suck up to him. You haven't accepted his hand in marriage yet, right?"

>"Of course not! Why?"

"Right! I have an idea! It's a longshot, but I've heard that slaves are treated well, and it wouldn't surprise me if they could get married! If I say it was our villages tradition to run away from you and chase you down later, then that would mean in reality, I accepted you back at the arena! Since you were new to my home, you wouldn't have known. We could go downstairs, right now, right up to his dinner party, and announce that to his face and his wives. The worst case is, is that he locks me up for half a day, and he loses face in front of his wives! There's barely any people in my village, I don't think Shup has any proof that I'm lying."

>"Oh, oh... that's... there's no telling how Shup would react! Buuut, I would love to see the look on his face at seeing you inside, and spinning that action back at him! You're invisible though, so let's wait. Stay with me for awhile, and think about it to make sure you really want to do this.

Yes, I should think about this.

Buuuuut... if you lose and are not killed, or spare someone and thus get disqualified won't this ensure that you and Lily are married and together? That could work. We could get what we want out of this. Kip can handle the king business and maybe we can aid him somehow even as a slave.

Only question is, does being disqualified mean you die? What happens to living losers in the tournament?

They get married a day after the tournament ends, so if you win the tournament you can ask for something that would allow you both to be married. Oh, a battle to the death with Shup himself would be a good wish. You would not be his slave anymore, and would be free to marry Lily.

Say you can manage to get your own.

Let's just go back to the original plan while making it appear your sticking to this one. Duel because of the bear conspiracy and for property, she won't be his slave anymore and can divorce him as soon as she's free anyway if he doesn't accept the duel's conditions and we just wish us and her free. This was just to try and be up all in his face and be with Lily on the side of the tournament.

Nonetheless, there was still Shup's agreement about the whole not rejecting thing anyway, respecting marriage customs or not, his agreement with Lily back at the stands still fucking applies with our clever shenanigans.

Naturally I was hoping to hear this from your wives, but I suppose you either don't trust them enough to answer questions the way you want them answered, or you don't respect them enough to give any merit to their words or ideas.

Assuming you speak truthfully, it seems like quite a bit of time and effort with ample red tape for papers to get caught in, and considering how easily you can define a slave's life against their will I suppose that would also give you the power to veto or annul a marriage.
Lily and I will continue our research into your customs and consider your offer, but it grows late and we have our own marriage customs to enact. A marriage of equals."

His wives are not on your side, so much as they are trying to make the best of a bad situation. Apparantly he doesn't mistreat them. He just blatantly abuses, torments and murders their lovers. I can imagine some might be out for revenge, but really they're not in much of a place to do so.

But you're in no place to negotiate with a clearly shrewder kobold. You could maybe beat him in a sword fight, but a word fight is not your forte. He will say nothing if it doesn't win him Lily in the end, so at best you can upset people by being forced to break their customs at Lord Shup's hands. You should do one of two things at this point.

1) "I will not agree to your bargains so quickly. Thank you for your advice. This will the last time I try to reason with you" then make a daring escape.

2) Kill him where he stands.

Can we delay working on paperwork 24/7 until after you're not fighting in the tournament anymore? You've been training in your free time and having to spend it all on paperwork would mean you stand a bigger chance of dying. Surely another few days wouldn't make a difference.

This little buddy of mine is a jerk, when I give it thought. But, most do not care to have bodyguards and surveillance put onto them, and so I can't blame them for acting crass. Anything short of being a jerk is nothing short of an exception.

>"Alright bitch, let's go! Wait, where did... damnit, a magic user! No one said magic was allowed!"

Ah, it turns out he has a terrible memory, as well. My subject is quite strong, despite his shortcomings. Fast as an arrow and hard as a rock, at that. Stronger than Fen, the poor boy. Dragon knights are strong in general, but of course some are stronger still than others. And the event? It was nothing much. There were lots of warlords to be slain back in the days that many were searching for power, so it is not as though my slaying of one was world shaking.

Hm. Normally I don't think this much. How strange. Not to mention a thought about Fen breaking into Lord Shup's manner.

My magic is limited. Aside from the magic on my armor, I can heal flesh wounds at a moderate pace, and have a rudimentary power over mundane elements. I am best at plain combat, however, and my spells are best suited to complement it.

If Fen is disqualified, that is considered the ultimate punishment. There will be no additional punishment, neither from the crowd nor from sparing anyone. He simply will not get his wish. He may withdraw as well, but with a gratuity fee of three hundred and fifty coins to make up for the missing match.

>"Ahh!"
>"Gotcha!"

This is assuming he'll be in any position to be sparing anyone. From what I am seeing, he will have his hands full.

This Momo has seemed to be the favorite dark horse of the tournament, with Fen being a close second after beating the warlord. More people lean to Momo though, as she has a much greater chance of winning this tournament. If Fen gains enough respect from the audience, they may yet feel for his wishes to let an opponent live, depending on said opponent.

>"Gkkt?!"

>"Moo-mo! Moo-mo! Moo-mo!", the crowd cheers.

Yes. I have attempted to keep Fen's spirits high, but his chances are low. Or, were low, however, his favor with the war god may change it. The effects of desperate fighting, training and the like give results tenfold. Furthermore, he will be harder to kill than what is let on. He may fall, but will likely be given the chance to rise again, if at a cost.

This contenders wish is... was, simply power. Very similar to the warlord Fen fought, but with an addition of diplomatic immunity. Government sponsored banditry, if you will.

I do not know what Momo's wish is, and I have not had leave to investigate the false king, having to supervise this gnoll.

At least up until this moment. Now, it appears that my duty in the tournament is cleared. Until further notice, I have leave to do as I please.

If Momo is the darkhorse then we might be able to get both of them out of this alive with a rousing speech before the fight.
Since your charge is unlikely to win here, would you do us a favor and start stirring up sentiment for both Fen and Momo to survive? Surely you have some contacts who could sway public opinion, and since both Fen and Momo are very useful for rescuing the king that makes preserving them a priority.
Fen has nothing but enmity for the false king and his lords, likes the real king, and has a strong sense of justice.
Momo appears to be a loyalist, and is one of the few who knows the 'king' is a fraud.

Disqualification still requires that you fight in matches and pay for missed ones, correct?
You also must pay if you surrender or forfeit, correct?

Momo uses an illusion to give the appearance of Fen burning to ash and blowing away.
Fen flees the arena and hides.
Momo leaves the arena, steals a female kobold corpse, then goes invisible and sneaks into Lily's room.
Lily, having been informed of the plan previously, waits with invisible Momo+corpse to be told that Fen is dead.
Once Lily is alone Momo burns the room and the corpse beyond recognition, then flees with Lily.
Fen and Lily are both 'dead'. Shup's wives blame him for Lily's suicide.
A few days later (Or a few days before, with Momo's help) a pair of newlyweds arrive in town that don't quite look the same as Fen and Lily.

My only contacts are Fen, the true king, and perhaps Momo though Fen, but she made it clear she does not trust me. Assisting Momo is a reasonable decision, though.

I can stay around the false king, but I feel there were strings being pulled that led to my re-assignment to the now deceased gnoll. Still, it may yield results.

>>345549
If Momo is to use an illusion in front of the area, then while most of the crowd is sure to be convinced, there are bound to be important figures that will not be so easily fooled. There would likely be a punishment if she found out, I am not sure what, such a thing has never been done to my knowledge. Not to mention, I am unsure if Momo will go with any of this. While I don't condone the desecration of a corpse, however, staging Lily's death may be a viable choice.

Now, I can meet with Momo, see the false King and follow, or if I may be so brash, attempt to save Fen without going overboard. Or...

"My Liege, I have arrived. What is your bidding?"
>"Kip. You have acted strangely for the last few days. First, the unorthodox training of a contender. This was not disobeying our laws, but it is strange, coupled with how freely you let Fen roam. Lord Shup informs me that he locked Fen away, yet he broke out. Not your fault, of course, as Shup legally apprehended Fen. Yet, the day the tournament started, Shup attempted to apprehend him again, and almost had, inside of the church. Yet, somehow again, Fen got away. Lots of witnesses back this claim up. Where were you, during this? It was also reported that he broke into the cellblock of Shup again, to conspire with a prisoner. There is little proof, yet I have no reason to believe Shup would so easily admit he has such a loose leash on his slave."

Ah, so in the end, I aroused suspicion, though not enough for him to assume I am truly traitorous.

>"Furthermore, you abandoned your new contender to have one last chat with Fen, even blockading the other Dragon Knight from seeing Fen prior to the fight."

Ah, yes. That was uncharacteristically reckless for me to do, Fen must be rubbing off on me. That sentence serves to remind me that this King does not know that I know about the God of War's aura.

>"All that alone let me send the message, and I have just received word that you were having a friendly chat with Momo. Admit you have a little bit of sympathy for slaves and Fen's situation and that Lord Shup has always been a bit of a dousche, notably even moreso then most pretentious nobles.

You spoke with Fen a final time, a little bit of a farewell because you've made friends with the slave. You trained him, admittedly, because you were a tad bored, and again, had sympathy for his plight. Eventually the training bore friendship and you got a sense of pride that it was helping him in the arena so well. You were there, escorting Fen in the church, giving him friendly hints and warnings about bounty hunters because you have no duty to Shup or his shenanigans with his slaves. You never helped directly, just enough to screw with Shup a bit. A bit unprofessional for a Knight but hella fun. He himself gave you the slip inside the church and then you yourself tried locating him after that, finding him later in the city and escorted him back to his quarters.

Admit to having an unprofessional admiration of Momo as well. She's kind of cute, if you do say so yourself. Plus a citizen also wanted to locate Fen, presumably for an autogragh as he and Momo are both dark horses of the tourney, but you're not entirely sure. You escorted him to Momo, had a chat about contestants, a flirt, and that's when you got summoned.

Feel free to change any part of those half-truths and lies that go well with your character and won't get you busted, that's the best ones I could come up with. I imagine that while you take orders from royalty and nobility, screwing around with one of the nobles as harmless fun wouldn't get you fired so long as you still direct orders from them. A crush on Momo might be overkill but humanizes you and may gain sympathy from the fake king because he might also like foreign ladies, or really ladies of any kind.

"A civilian asked to meet Momo, and previous orders suggested that such a meeting to happen under my watchful gaze instead of outside of a dragon knight's control.

Fen is likely the most interesting combatant the arena has ever seen, and certainly one of the hardest to control. I knew immediately that he would require special handling, and that is what I have done.
With the leeway I granted Fen did not resist what limits I did place upon him for important matters. I note that Shup has proven unable to restrain with stone walls, bars, weights, and chains, but my methods have caused him to spend almost all his time by my side with no bonds but words. Shup's failure to control his property in his own home is, as you said, not my responsibility.
For my most recent charge my orders were to assure the safety of himself and those around him, and he was unscathed when he entered his arena match. I would like to note he refused training and advice, should that be of concern.

On a related note, how fares the knight which replaced me as Fen's guard?"

"My Liege. Fen has proven himself to be difficult to keep track of, escaping Shup's walls, bars, weights and chains. I noted this, and used different methods, leading to his presence being shared by my own for a great deal of time, his slipping from me in the church notwithstanding until I located him once more. I should admit I was somewhat inspired and sympathetic to his cause, and felt it fair he should be given a chance through some training. Furthermore, my chat with Momo was limited. A citizen wished to locate Fen, and Momo may have known his location. She is a nice girl, I would like to add, but I have never assisted her. As for my recent charge, my orders were to protect, and he entered the fight without a scratch. How fares the knight that looks over Fen, on a related note?"

>"... very well, Kip, your answer has merit, though you are showing yourself to be rather affable for a knight. I will now say I have summoned you for two reasons. Fen is dangerous, I have my reasons to believe this. He must be slain. I wanted to wait until after the tournament when either he died on his own or his wish was granted, but it is too risky. He must die. After hearing your answer, I believe I can still trust you. It will serve as a fine display of your loyalty and prove I have worried over nothing."

"My Liege, as you bid. Is Fen, however, not propert of Lord Shup?"

>"I have spoken to Shup. As long as Fen dies in a manner that shows Shup had nothing to do with it, he has agreed to Fen's death. Death by a dragon knight would fit this. I will compensate him threefold for a slave's loss, and take the responsibility for the dishonor of slaying a contender.

It is missions not unlike these which give us a terrible reputation.

>"It should be easily within your ability. Plus, as he trusts you, you should be able to convince Fen to leave the arena should he be inside of there. As usual, the tournament halls are mostly out of my authority. It's bad enough to slay a contender outside of the hallowed arena, let alone in a place outside of my jurisdiction. I do not believe it will come to this, but! If Fen is alive come tomorrow's fight, I will have to think you have turned coat."

"Yes, my liege."

So it has come to this. I truly would have wondered if I had not already known this king was fake. Regardless, it will not do to question his orders further.

So we have an entire day to oust the king before having to slay Fen. We have to locate Shup's enemies quickly, and break him out. Or stage Fen's death, but that will disqualify him in the tournament. Or we could stage your death, Kip, which may be easier, but then the false king shall have another assassinate him. The best time for your faked death would be approaching Fen tommarrow as he approaches the arena under the guise of you about to slay him, then "die" due to a misfortune, instigated by Momo. You must be seen by officials, drawing your sword. Possibly by another noble that hates Shup and allies with you. As soon as Fen makes it to the arena, he cannot be assassinated, then you can escort him invisably or by having the allied noble escorting him, out of town hopfully to a secure hideout. The real King will reinstate your status as alive and Dragon Knight when he is returned to the throne.

I am in no rush. I do not believe you are capable of freeing Fen, and even with his wives sympathetic to Fen and Lily I do not believe you are competent enough to capture and impersonate Shup, as anything less than a full compliment of guards would hardly be a challenge against the dragon knights.
You haven't even thought that far in advance.

If you wish to save somebody, save Lily. When word comes that Fen has died so soon after they were engaged to be married I am sure she will take her own life, probably by burning herself beyond recognition to deny Shup perverse pleasures.

If there's any way we can all go spy on Shup without Zizi worrying about you tipping him off, I'd say we do it. Maybe you can all go in invisible to rummage around in Shup's stuff? It really depends on how good Momo is at spreading invisibility around.

Good. It seems as though he is listening, this time. The guards look at me suspiciously, but, as commendable, they see it as wise not to push the issue.

I could just as easily leave, now, with everyone else. Though I will not kill Shup, I would not think it terrible to give him trouble on my last day as a dragon knight, at least my last for awhile.

Confront Shup.
If Shup's wives find out he's trying to have Fen assassinated then Shup will be put into a very difficult position. They support him because they love him, and that is why they're likely to interfere with his plans.
They appear to disagree what he's doing to Lily, but plotting assassinations goes far beyond that and they're going to want to 'save' him from making a 'terrible mistake' before it's too late.
Consider making an ambiguous mention of the king being furious when he finds out.

Thankfully, we made it back, once Kip came to me. Our movement is restricted from now on, though.

I'm protected by tournament law. If nothing changes, and so long as we don't commit crimes in the eyes of the tournament officials, we don't think Shup or the King would come after me. Momo is the same, and while she may be a high suspect to my breakout, she was never seen. Zizi was never seen, either. The both of them will probably have to be the ones that go out and brings back food for us.
Lily and Kip are at most risk... Shup can attempt to bring Lily back, and the King can order for Kip. I'm not sure what to do with them.
...or Cheelop, who seemed to clutch my cloak the entire way back.

>"Sir," Kip says, "While Lily and I are at risk, it is not allowed for Shup or the King to enter a contestant's room uninvited. If we lodge ourselves here, then we will likely not be bothered."

If Fen loses, Momo still has her one chance to spare an opponent right? So that should cover that possibility.

"Isn't it risky to be seen being friendly with me...?"
>"I am not afraid of suspicion."

And that's how the night went, being told how Spike works, and how to use a shield.

"Hey, Momo! Why are you training me anyway, if I'm just going to be fighting you?"
>"Dear Fen, I am getting practice out of this too, you know. Besides, a shield will be of marginal help to you when it comes to fighting me."

>"Wait wait wait, bro! Momo's in the tournament?!" Zizi says.
"You just found out? Well, actually, it was awhile till I knew..."
>"No brother of mine goes around hitting girls! You'd better not hurt her!"

Ughhhh. "Is there anyway you could spare me if you win?"

>"I was not planning on it, but... I may change my plans. If you win, would you spare me?" says Momo.
"Of course! Besides, I think the crowd likes you, they may not mind that."
>"Perhaps. We would both lose, otherwise. Now, Lord Spike has mastered three plain magical balls he can throw. Fireballs are one, of course. The other is an armor rot. It will not affect your clothes, but if you bring a non-flammable shield into combat, you will need your shield to avoid contact. The third kind is a gas. It is harmless on its own, but I would make sure to avoid them so long as he is casting fireballs at you. That is all I know, but it is possible he has more magic. Now, we will do this all night, before we both rest until our matches."
"It's hot! It feels like I'm on fire already!"
>"Yes, Fen, it is fire, after all."

Say "You talk too much", then rush him with your shield out. If he's at all competent then he's going to try to attack your shield, which is why you are going to not let his attack land on it.

Magic users tend to be pretty shitty in close range, so get in close and don't let him get any distance. He certainly can't use his fireballs or gas up close, so if you get within arm's reach forgo all defense and brutalize him as fast as possible.

Oh, and go for exposed flesh. His clothing might be armored.

Don't fight defensively. Time is on his side, as he can lay gas throughout the arena to deny you that space to dodge in. It is very unlikely that he will simply run out of mana before he blows you to kingdom come or rots your shield. Be aggressive. B. E. Aggressive. Also, do note that you will have to see what type of ball he throws to decide if you want to block it or not. Block only fireballs.

i agree to rush him. melee fighters, as a rule, *must* close distance to casters as soon as possible.
>>346140
it might be better to rush him with our shield to our side, instead of in front. we don't know how long each takes to cast, but we can prepare for the worst and assume it's only as fast as his reflexes. He might cast armor rot first to rid you of your shield early on and the shield's profile is a much smaller target than its face.
alternatively if he opens with a fireball, we can block.
Fen: rush him and try to smash him with the thin side of your shield, twisting your body into it. If he casts fireball, pull it in and block; if he casts armor rot, swing it wide and outside his target envelope--you can either make contact with the shield to his face/head, or get a grip on the back of his head with your hand and slam it down into the ground.

He can cast pretty fast, but he gathers the ball in his hands slow enough to give me warning to the type. So long as that doesn't change, I have just enough to move my shield accordingly! As expected, he opens with a simple fireball, blocked easily.

Risky! I could get him in a grapple, but I don't know how much mobility he needs, he could blast me with full power if I do something rash.

>Kick him

I'm trying! But a kick requires good balance, and if I don't make it count for everything, will leave myself completely open and my shield or sword would be as good as toast! We're just dancing around each other. He knows what I'm up to. We're both in the same circumstance, if one either of us makes the slightest slip on their attack, the other will be able to kick the crap out of the other! We're both on the offense, but very careful about it.

Feinting and fancy moves aren't doing much, he's able to read me pretty well. The amount of concentration he has to put on that ball is showing, and it's slowing him down. My back was, however, just flogged, so I'm not so keen on twisting around much myself!

Shift so the outside of your shield is on the ground and you have your weight on it, then kick off and pivot around so your head is around where your leg is now.

Here comes the tricky part.
Kick your legs off the ground and pull them into a roll so you can to carry the motion into what could have been a handstand. This will have you upside down and facing the mage.

If you can hit him then uncoil your legs and shove off with your arms so your feet slam into where his head is now. This will give you the best chance of injuring and disorienting him while forcing him to the ground.
If he dodges then carry the motion through into a roll to get back to your feet and lunge at him before he can regain his balance.

>>

Well, whatever he needs to do, he can't do it if you're standing between him and the gas. So PUSH him away from it. Keep up the pressure. If I were him, I'd realize that he can't land a fireball at all if you've got that shield, and preparing gas leaves him open for an attack. He's either banking on this taking you out in one hit through the shield (unlikely) or he's going to rot your shield next instead of lighting the gas. So yeah, keep attacking. Also, be sure to disperse the gas by shoving your shield into it. He could just light you on fire then but you can handle THAT long enough to take him out.

Shit, we should've brought some source of fire ourselves. Then we could eliminate gas pockets at a safe distance, or when he's standing in them.

It's too bad we didn't get the chance to learn to use poisons. If we had, the fight would be won now.
>>
