Tiak takes a step closer. Dan's face seems to have been roughed up as much as Mok's. But apparently the Navigator wasn't so paranoid about receiving medical assistance, his cracks are covered with surgical plaster.

Just conducting some investigations. Tell me, what happened in the bar? Why did you and the bartender fight?

>Bah, the old bastard started accusing me about some conspiracy nutjob bullshit. Of course I wouldn't have any of that.

Hmm, well Mok seems to be pretty convinced about that "nutjob" story, if you ask me.

>Hmpf, and you would believe him? Old crook got hit so many times in the head, he probably still thinks that he's a secret commando or something. By the way, weren't you dead?

I got better.

Tiak checks his PDA, pretending to be taking notes.

Why don't you tell me about the events leading up to the fight

>I don't have anything else to say. I went to have a drink, he started throwing crazy accusations at me, and when I kept denying all, he punched me in the face. That's all.

The Navigation Officer doesn't seem to be in a talkative mood, and remains silent the rest of the time, unresponsive to Tiak attempts to get more information. Tiak spends that time keeping an eye on his PDA and pretending to be busy with it.

Suddenly, from outside the bridge screaming can be heard, and the voice is no other than the captain's. It's something like...

"Aaaah, help, somebody help me! They're trying to kill me!"

Through his camera, Tiak can see the captain desperately rushing out of his quarters, running towards the elevator, leaving his office alone.

>Did you hear something?

Sternly, "yes. Get down. Stay here." Walk cautiously to the door, gun in hand, and peek through. (to waste time)

When you're sure the captain is gone into the elevator, dash into the hallway.

I think so... Stay here, I'll go check it out.

Tiak hurries out of the bridge and into the Captain's Quarters, empty now. It's hard not to see, and even smell, that something has changed. There are smoking holes on the floor, where the metal and plastic are molten and still hot. A plasma weapon, at full power, would've been able to do this.

Ok, now search his desk for the key to the drawer. If you can't find it, then force the drawer open. Use the cutter if you have to (Although that would require ditching the cutter in engineering so you aren't caught with it).

Oh, and keep an eye out for the other crescent key.

Tiak doesn't waste a second and reaches for the desk drawer, but to his dismay, it's locked. And he doesn't have a key.

He also takes a quick look at the library. For the most part is unimpressive. There are a lot of cheap novels, and a few biographies of famous historic Maurians. Most of them generals and captains. Nothing particullary interesting.

There's a shelf full of large, green books with human words on them. Tiak doesn't know what the words mean, his human is pretty basic.

And a locked box. It looks sturdy and heavy, and Tiak doesn't have a key for this keyhole either.

Tiak writes VSCURAIL down in his PDA:

Then he tries to open the back door. But surprisingly, the slot doesn't react to his key card. Either it's been rigged to only accept a specific card, or it's just broken.

Tiak sneaks out of the room, making sure that nobody sees him. He opens the vent on the floor, recovering his Servo camera and hiding the lockbox in its place.

Back again, he checks the desk one more time. It doesn't have anymore drawers, just that one. The desk is made of plastic, so Tiak estimates that he could cut it in no time. But if he doesn't want to damage what might be inside that drawer, he needs to be careful. Around 3-4 minutes should be enough.

>>

I suggest a couple actions...

1st - Place camera in vent inside Captain's room. Spying on him is probably a good idea. And we can retrieve it anytime he's not in the room, which we can monitor. We might be able to get an idea of where the keys are using this method.

2nd - Quickly push button; see what's behind the shutters. It looks cool. ;D

3rd - Quickly check behind/on top of furniture for key(s).

4th - Quickly check inside books for key(s) - lift out, shake gently, see if key falls out, put back in place so it looks undisturbed.

All of these actions should take less than 1-2 minutes total.

If still nothing... may want to just give it up. Cutting open the desk is SUPER risky if we get caught, and might destroy the very info we need. :C

Tiak cuts through the desk and the drawer carefully. Or he tries to.

Oops!

Good thing that the drawer was almost empty and its contents were undamaged. There's a small note with what looks like a password, and a bunch of letters under it. A.S.C.E. can be read on the header of every letter. That's curious. That's the name of one of the most influential corporations in the Republic.

If Tiak wants to do anything else in the room, he should do it quick. He's pretty sure that if he's caught now, he won't be able to talk his way out of this one.

Grab the passcode, and one of the sheets of papers, then shove them over to the left and cut through them with your cutter to look like someone fucked up opening the drawer. He probably won't check to see that everything's in there.

Grab ALL papers, hide in uniform, quickly open VENT COVER and gently toss camera inside (we can use its antigrav propulsion to position it later), then GTFO.

Do NOT attempt to retrieve the lockbox yet. Wait until we KNOW the captain isn't going to bust in on us.

I suggest running around the ship for a while looking for the captain. If you find him, tell him you were looking for him and express relief that's he's alive and (presumably) unharmed, and ask him what he can tell you about the attack. Be as helpful and professional as possible, and vow to do everything you can to investigate.

Then try to find some time to sit down and READ all this crap. Store images of everything (evidence) on your PDA. Afterwards, retrieve files from filing cabinet (assuming we have a better idea what to look for) or retrieve lockbox, whichever is easier at the time.

Tiak quickly grabs all the papers except the last one, which seems to be blank except for the header. He burns partially that piece of paper with the cutter, to simulate a screw up.

Immediately after that, he climbs up the library, opening the ventilation shaft and dropping the camera inside, facing into the office. And with this done, he finally leaves the room.

Just while he was wondering about taking the lockbox with him now or not, he notices something at the end of the corridor. The elevator is coming up.

Our captain has just been "attacked". We should act suspicious of anyone coming to the upper deck right now.

I suggest standing out of the way so that people don't see you, with weapon drawn and set to stun. Holster weapon no matter who shows up.

If it turns out to be the captain, say you're glad to see he's unharmed, bla bla bla, see if there's anything you can do to help.

If it's someone else, ask them if they've seen the captain around.

If it's the colonel, salute and give him a report of the situation (you were on the bridge trying to get a statement from the navigator when you heard a commotion, investigated to find captain's room shot up), were about to go look for captain.

...if they find us here and we can't explain how we didn't see who fucked up his desk, the logical conclusion would be that WE fucked up his desk. I mean, we have the cutter and everything. We're very suspicious at the moment.

I suggest we hide in the vent.

>Yes, Trake, I know. Like half an hour ago the Colonel dragged me down that dark pit where the decapitated corpse of our fine Head Engineer was laying. Those aren't news for me.

Tiak nods, checking his PDA while the doctor talks. Through the camera, he can see Colonel Keranos getting into the Captain's Quarters and inspecting the place, specially the desk and the mess of the drawer.

As security officer, it's my job to make sure there *aren't* any more deaths like this. If people are willing to kill over these keys, whatever it unlocks is probably really damn important. I've almost been killed multiple times; I've found bombs on this ship; and someone decided to bring dozens of gallons of a potent neurotoxin aboard.

You seem to think you're above this violence, but you're not. You had a key. You got lucky when whoever decided to steal it did so without killing you in the process.

Tiak doesn't want to make a fuss, but he doesn't want to just leave without saying something first.

Look, I only know that those keys are part of the reason Mikos ended up dead. I just want to make sure that there aren't any more deaths like this. That's my job, and you aren't over this violence, you might be a target too. And if you keep information to yourself that could help me save lives, those deaths are over your head as well.

Check PDA. Is the colonel still in the Captain's quarters?

If he is, we might have a quick chance to retrieve the box... or we might want to avoid grabbing it until we're sure we won't get interrupted... or we could try get a way to hide the thing before moving it to a better location. It seems pretty big - does Tiak think he could hide it in his clothes without it being totally obvious? Or are we going to need a more sneaky way to take care of this? I'm going to assume we won't grab it just yet.

I suggest Tiak just find somewhere "Safe" to sit down and scan those papers into his PDA (take pictures of them?) before settling down to read them, assuming this is possible. Perhaps one of the dead passenger's rooms, or a bathroom? I'd rather not do this in the presence of anyone else... we still have very little to go on to "trust" anyone on this ship. If they're not easily scannable, try to find someplace to read them without worry (bathroom might still work).

After we have the papers scanned/read... go dispose of them somewhere. Stuffing them inside the Janitor's things (when he's not looking) might be good, since he's known to collect loose papers.

Next (if we got papers scanned), find a place to sit down and just read those documents. I suggest the bar, since a public place is likely to be less suspicious than hiding somewhere to read them.

According to the camera, the captain's office are empty at the moment.

The lockbox is too big for Tiak to keep it inside his jacket, he would have to carry it in his hand. And Tiak doesn't know if he has time to take it before someone sees him, so he runs into the elevator.
Not a second too late; as the elevator gates close behind him, he can hear a door opening, and footsteps in the corridor.

With the passwords and the documents in his pocket he has to decide where to go now. The elevator isn't the best place to hang around without being discovered.

They're all letters, from representatives of A.S.C.E. to the Captain. They all start with a "Estimated Kiodo Beredime", in a respectful and obsequious tone, just to become more harsh and demanding as they progress, ending almost into an underhanded threat.

The content of the letters are familiar to Tiak, it reminds him of the letters he found in the bar and the kitchen. They all "friendly" remind the captain about the large sum of money lost during gambling sessions in casinos owned by the corporation.

The last letters directly threaten him with exposing his debt and "other less pleasant deeds" to the public if he doesn't pay.

The very last letter is different. Here they say that they've found a solution. The captain will have to do a job for them, an undercover mission, and his debt will be settled.

Tiak suspects that the other two letters are part of this bundle. How did they end up in the Canteen and the kitchen? That's a different matter.

Tiak copies the letters in his PDA. He can't take pictures of them until he retrieves his camera, though.

Keep gathering evidence.
It's going to be fucking hilarious if we wind up arresting the captain for treason, the colonel for impersonating an officer, and them plus the doctor and barman for conspiracy charges.

This is going to end with Tiak, Yery, and Zira all locked in the bridge with the evidence and desperately broadcasting that the entire ship is under arrest for treason.

>After we have the papers scanned/read... go dispose of them somewhere. Stuffing them inside the Janitor's things (when he's not looking) might be good, since he's known to collect loose papers.

Also, since you're already on the same deck... consider trying to open the password-protected cabinet in Engineering with the 2 passwords we have now.

Tiak makes his way to the janitor's room, which happens to be empty.

He takes the opportunity to dispose of the Captain's documents inside the cabinet on the wall, which only contains a modest pile of papers now. Quickly rifling through them doesn't bring up anything interesting.

Not if I can do anything about it! No, this is going to end with Tiak, Yery, and Zira all locked in the bridge doing something that could get themselves arrested for public indecency.

Draw your tazer and go for the crew files. If the Colonel's smart he's probably figured the significance of the drawer and is expecting you, but if you leave it any longer they'll probably change the password. :/

Excellent, they'll never be found in that mess. And if they do, nobody will know how he got them. Let's go for the crew files now. Don't let anyone see you open the cabinet though.

Tiak carefully goes back into Engineering. Nobody seems to be in the area, nor near the elevator.

Tiak inserts the password found in the Captain's office, and it works! The middle drawer automatically opens. But instead of a bunch of papers, a flat touch screen emerges from it. Seems that they're digital archives, after all, just designed like an old-fashion filing cabinet.

The screen shows the available options: Crew Roster, Passenger List, Flight Route and Misc. Tiak can also insert a keyword and see if there are any matches within the files.

I'm guessing you can't grab the lot onto your PDA easily.

Well, Nayria said:
>Check the crew files and registers, they'll give you some interesting pieces of information.

So skim the Crew Roster.

Tiak inserts ASCE in the search case, but it doesn't bring up any results.

Next, he tries with the Passenger list. Unfortunately, it doesn't give any more details than the ones in screen.

After that, he tries with the Crew Roster. In this case, he can select any of the options given in the list to get a more detailed description.

The Captain seems like an obvious one to try.

Go in order of suspicion.
Janitor (cause he's a lunatic)
Captain (obvious)
Physician (how'd he get one of those keys?)
Navigational Officer (got into that fight)
Barman
Head Engineer
Engineering Assistant
Head of Security (just to see)

If you can copy everything to your PDA and read it somewhere else, do that.

Agreed. If you can copy everything, then copy everything instead of reading it, and read it later.

Do it in this order:

Captain
Physician
Engineer's Assistant
Bartender
Nav Officer
Janitor
Head Engineer
Yourself

Tiak selects the "Copy" option, and a port opens on he front "drawer" of the cabinet. Tiak plugs his PDA to it and the computer instantly transfers a copy of all the Crew Roster data to the PDA. That way, Tiak can read it in a more discreet place any time he wants.

Wait... what's...
