Just pulling the lever like that doesn't strike me as a good idea...
inspecting the room, this looks like a gas chamber.
there is a metal plate on rails that could slide over the airducts, holes by the ceiling, and the door is sealed off by a metal plate.

I saw this in a Spiderman movie once. You'll just get slightly bigger muscles and voices in your head, which you already have anyway.

You could wedge the smaller box into the track of the vent before pulling the lever, or using the grate on the door.

Actually, this is totally not true. If a limb is completely severed, your body stops sending blood down that way. Everything closes up and just kinda seeps. Having something taken all the way off is better than a massive wound on a still-attached limb (well, as far as bleeding to death goes).
