Let's tell a STORY.

What shall the STORY be about?
It can be about a GREATER BEAST or LESSER RACE.

GREATER BEASTS are powerful and large, armed with natural weapons. However, they cannot go into small places, use tools, and can have only limited contact with LESSER RACES. They have LAIRS and sometimes take SERVANTS to protect in exchange for services. Though they have problems getting around towns, they are respected in BEAST COURTS.

LESSER RACES are smaller and lack many of the powerful natural weapons of a GREATER BEAST, but they are extremely dexterous and wide-spread. They have organized civilizations and many towns. They are capable of using TOOLS, exploring places of any size, and wielding WEAPONS. Some even have TECHNOLOGY or MAGIC.

It is chosen.
This is the tale of a GREATER BEAST.

You incite fear and awe in the LESSER RACES, but your world is rapidly disappearing. Many of your fellows have disappeared to far-away homes and LAIRS. Now, we must decide.

Where is our beast from, and where is his LAIR?

The WEST is the wide ocean, with islands large and small that depend on boats for trade and communication.

The SOUTH is a place of fire and heat, sand and sun. It is nearly inhospitable, but a few hardy RACES make their home here.

The EAST is a place of woodlands and life. It has trees as far as the eye can see, growing as tall as the sky.

The NORTH is a cold and barren place. It is mountainous and trecherous, but even here do strong RACES spread.

The CENTER is a place where all elements meet. In it is a mountain as tall as the sky and as deep as eternity. Many RACES live here, but the mountains and rocks provide many places for a secure LAIR.

Where it lives will determine things about the BEAST and the STORY.

This tale is about a GREATER BEAST of the SOUTH.

But what does our beast look like? We must choose if we BURROW/SWIM, FLY, or RUN. The beast may choose up to TWO methods of movement. This will decide most what the beast LOOKS LIKE.

Burrow for sure.

To run or to fly? Each has its advantages. I'll bet a flying/burrowing combo would be really cool, but a beast that can run would be more adept at catching prey.

Does either of the three us more energy? Will we be able to fly for as long as we can run or burrow?

This beast can BURROW through the earth, SWIM in the sand, and FLY. The last physical trait we need to decide on is what we are most FEARED for.

Is it our HORNS and JAWS, which give us deadly attacks from the front, our CLAWS and WINGS, which give us quick attacks that can be used at short range on all sides, our our TAIL, which protects our rear, where most foolish LESSER RACES try to attack us?

WINGS and TAIL it is. For this, our GREATER BEAST has gained slightly better flight skills.

Time for FINISHING TOUCHES. Here we may pick three additional features, things such as LARGE HORNS, FEATHERED CRESTS, DISTINCT PATTERNS and the like. This SOUTHERN BEAST has LARGE HORNS, making it more fearsome. Its scales are the same colors as the Southern sands, giving it ample CAMOUFLAGE. It has a distinctive ROAR, which may serve to stun or frighten LESSER RACES.

This is how the mighty beast now appears.

If this is acceptable, we may move on to giving it a NAME. A NAME for a GREATER BEAST is much like a title, and can be anything from 'Swims In Sands' to 'Ten Thousand Fangs'. Its NAME be born of the beasts' TEMPERMENT and PAST, so choose wisely.

All of the names went into a hat, and only one emerged.

This will be the tale of MIRAGE OF THE SANDSTORM.

From a young age, he has used his superior CAMOUFLAGE and FLIGHT to carve out a somewhat vast territory of the SOUTH. He uses the somewhat common sandstorms to his advantage, blending his scales with the flying sand to disguise his approach, and stunning anyone who saw through his trick. Now, he is an adult, and he must tend to his territory like a proper BEAST.

This morning was quiet and uneventful until the approach of a CARAVAN from the NORTH of his territory. He normally didn't bother with the trials and tribulations of LESSER RACES, but this was the dawn of his adult life. What will Mirage do?

Mirage decided it would be clever to follow the CARAVAN instead of approaching. He to take to the air, for as long as he did not cast a shadow upon the caravan, no one would risk looking up at the hot Southern sun.

He could see it was not a typical travelling CARAVAN. They had many mounts but only one wagon, and if the wagon was full of goods it was not very guarded. They wore the garbs of a city he forgot the name of, and had not visited for years. They did not seem to be heading to any city he knew of in particular, but he knew their path would lead them to his favorite OASIS. But for now...

>Mmm...where was I? Oh, yes.

It was no use just diving in now, so Mirage stayed in flight. The warm air currents made it even easier to trail them, but he'd tire soon. Not right now, but soon.

He observed the small CARAVAN with a degree of interest. His patrolled territory did not have a TOWN in the direction they were headed - perhaps they meant to stop at the OASIS for a camp, and proceed in the correct direction tomorrow? He could only attempt to fathom the strange world of LESSER RACES as they approached his OASIS with renewed vigor. It seems they had finally spotted it in the distance, beyond the heat mirages on the sand. He could continue to watch them from above, but once they took camp, they would likely risk looking up to gauge weather for tomorrow's travels. What should Mirage do?

Mirage decided to observe the caravan from a hidden point of view. He landed some ways away and slid under the sand, changing his scales to match the nearly uniform yellow-gold of the desert.

They did not seem to be poisoning it, or tampering with it, but they were taking the water to drink and refill canteens. Though Mirage expected goods to emerge from the wagon, he instead saw children and women, all dressed raggedly. It was a curious situation. He could continue as planned, and confront them at night, or confront them while the sun was still up. Shall Mirage continue being patient, or will he aggress those in his rightful domain?

>>173811
You do not possess a CLEVER TONGUE, so you cannot speak the strange language of the LESSER RACES, though you understand them perfectly. They're probably refugees of war being taken to safety, or slave traders. Wait until nightfall and lure away the BEASTSPEAKER, then inquire as to the purpose of their entering your territory.

Mirage took action, rising up from the sands with the sun at his back. It was a brilliant but not overwhelmingly FEARSOME display. The caravan-people scramble to push their BEASTSPEAKER forward. He looks to be of little experience, but his eyes detray his determination. Mirage asks him of his and his people's purpose at Mirage's oasis.

"Master of the sands, we meant no offense! We did not know there was a beast here!" He bows his head in respect to Mirage. "We are simply a small band of travellers, escaping from Kya'tor. A Beast has gone mad upon it, and no HUNTERS were within a day's travel." The BEASTSPEAKER keeps his head low. Mirage could inquire about taking a SERVANT as tribute and let them stay at the oasis...He could even direct them to a different city, or ask for more information.

Curious, Mirage calms the many thoughts in his head and asks for more information on the mad beast.

The BEASTSPEAKER says that it is a great bird, driven mad somehow. It attacked the town ceaselessly until finally roosting on its highest tower, letting none escape while it was awake. They escaped while it slumbered.

Mirage knows most birds are weaker than BEASTS such as himself, but he'd be at a disadvantage fighting it head-on in the air. Even so, this would not be a difficult kill, should he decide to fight the mad creature.

Then comes the matter of a tribute for using the OASIS. The BEASTSPEAKER hesitantly talks to the caravan, then emerges to face you once more.

"There are three willing to serve you, sand-lord," he speaks clearly. "One is a woman of the former court, with a small child. She is wise in the ways of the LESSER RACES, but she does not know your tongue. An older man with experience in LORE, but not many years left to him. If it would please you, sand-lord, I would offer myself. This caravan will not need me when we pass your territory, and there is nothing for me left at home."

As he contemplates the words of the BEASTSPEAKER, Mirage thinks about his territory, and where all these places would be. Since his last patrol, these are all the locations of import, his neighbors, his several OASIS, his LAIR, the position of the CARAVAN, and the civilized lands to the NORTH. The nearest city, Nyotta, is not far for a mounted caravan. He could guide them there and be home in a single day, or he could immediately set off for Kya'tor with his new servant. Or simply laze about in the sun, really. What should Mirage do?

Take the beast speaker. It will make future servants much, much more useful. At least point them in the direction of the nearest town. Find out your new servant's name and set off toward the mad bird. This might be an opportunity to expand your territory as well.

Say that in exchange for the service of the beast speaker, the remainder may stay at this Oasis, and presumably proceed to Nyotta.

Let it say goodbye, and convey detailed directions to Nyotta, then start traveling to Kya'tor. Flying with the speaker on your back, if that works. Ask its name. Ask if the survivors of the city would be likely to accept your authority in exchange for the destruction of the bird monster.

Mirage allowed the BEASTSPEAKER to say farewell to his former travelling partners. He did not have many to say, but they atleast look thankful that he offered himself. He does not look at you with any malice, and as a BEAST you would know if he did. At the inquiry of a name, the BEASTSPEAKER seems surprised.

"My name is Baod, sand-lord. If it offends you, you may change it as you wish. I am not very attatched to my name, either."

The exchange complete, Mirage gives them safe directions to Nyotta. There are no dangerous beasts in Mirage's lands - besides Mirage. They would be safe to the city walls. As the caravan disappears into the distance, Baod looks amazed as you offer him your back to ride on. His thousand murmured thanks resound in your ears as you take off to Kya'tor to see the mad bird yourself.

You make idle chatter on the way - the bird is apparently very mad, and Baod very thankful that you decided to investigate the matter. He knows the BEAST COURT does not meet for many months, and this quick intervention will no doubt land Mirage more territory and prestige.

With Baod now a SWORN SERVANT, we can understand him a little better - and he, us. The longer we keep him in our service, the better a SERVANT he will become. He may even grow to be a little more like us.

Shall Mirage take the high course and fly above the city to scout, or leave Baod on the outskirts and burrow inside? If he WALKED in, he might destroy a gate.

Awesome. Let's rock this thing.

We already know it's nesting in the highest tower. Leave him on the outskirts and burrow inside. Use camouflage to scout from below. The bird has an advantage in the air, so that advantage needs to be removed. We should either burrow up into the base of the tower and attack that way, or, if that seems unlikely to work, knock the tower down before it notices we're there.

Hmm.

I say we ought to let him keep "Baod," but give him another name as well. Dunno what it should be though.

And, yeah, you mentioned earlier that fighting the bird in the air puts you at a disadvantage... so let's approach this from below the ground instead.

But first if he can give you some tactically relevant information about the city that'd be great.
>>

Use CAMOUFLAGE to increase evasion, leave Baod outside the walls, and use DIG to get inside the tower. Do not destroy or knock down the tower, we ned to keep the city relatively undamaged, or we won't exactly get a huge, warm thank you. Use ROCK CLIMB to climb the inside of the tower, then burst through the top, destroying only the roof. If the bird is there, use SEISMIC TOSS to smash it into the ground beside the tower.

This seems like a well-reasoned plan of attack, but it should probably wait for nightfall since it seems that the bird rests at night. Assuming that we can see in the dark, anyway... can we?

Is there some sort of generally accepted way for GREATER BEASTS to take it to one another? The existence of a BEAST COURT implies there are social strictures of some kind which it might be inconvenient to violate.

When Baod relays Mirage's inquiries about the Queen, the Princess says she will definitely serve in her stead, should Mirage ask that of her.

Baod, Mirage, and the Princess talk back and forth. There are a few choices for Mirage to make - in all of them, though, Kya'tor comes under his territory.

Kya'tor could send him tribute, in the form of SERVANTS, GOODS, and whatever else Mirage might require.

He could live in Kya'tor, and rule there as King.

So hey Mirage, you were able to give us a map earlier of the territories of the beasts in the area.

Just in the interest of knowing more about stuff, could Baod conceivably do the same for whatever political entities exist among the lesser races? Couldn't hurt to know who's sworn allegiance to who or whatever if we intend to go for further expansion.

Baod says Kya'tor should be back in working order in just a few days. LESSER RACES are resiliant to this sort of thing.

Mirage, in turn, explains the BEAST COURT. It is when the GREATER BEASTS of the region meet. Here is where the loose rules that GREATER BEASTS choose to govern themselves are formed. Formal challenges can be issued, greviances addressed...In its most basic form, the BEAST COURT prevents every other BEAST from consuming each other for ambition. Stepping out of line at a BEAST COURT attracts the attentions of things even GREATER BEASTS fear.

Between Mirage and Baod, they know how servants work. The LESSER makes an oath to serve the GREATER, and it binds their fates. In exchange for their service, SERVANTS eventually gain strength and powers from their GREATER BEAST master. In this way, it is mutually beneficial.

Mirage does not understand the politics of LESSER RACES, and could not show you their boundaries.

No one is sure what makes a BEAST go mad. Some older BEASTS say it is the LESSER RACES that make them so, others say it is the taint of the earth. There is no known cure.

Mirage sleeps in one place. He definitely does not roll on his back and kick sometimes in his dreams. Either way, his connection to Baod will prevent him from accidentally rolling on him.

Mirage likes to collect strange rocks as a passtime. He also likes glass and strange-colored sand. He tends to his appearance often. There is much to waste time on when he isn't doing his BEASTLY duties.

If there is nothing more, Baod and Mirage will sleep until tomorrow.

Yeah that question was for Baod. I wouldn't expect Mirage to know that, but I would expect Baod to at least have a cursory knowledge of the local area.

Beyond that,

There are things GREATER BEASTS fear, beyond other more powerful beasts?

Also, are there ways for the LESSER RACES to take on a GREATER BEAST? Baod mentioned something about HUNTERS earlier, while he was still with the caravan.

Baod does, indeed, know better than Mirage! Mirage wonders why he didn't see him asking Baod in the first place.

Baod reveals additional cities and trade routes to Mirage. He says many of the cities are in an uneasy truce, though Kya'tor might present a soft target now that they are weakened. Still, if word passes that they are protected by a GREATER BEAST, that alone is enough to give many a second thought.

The only thing that could turn the tides are more BEASTS, or HUNTERS.

HUNTERS are skilled warriors from the LESSER RACES that band together just to hunt GREATER BEASTS. They make armor from their scales, blades from their fangs, and some say become like BEASTS themselves. GREATER BEASTS have little protection from weapons made of their kin.

Mirage is afraid of the things that are GREATER THAN GREAT, that is, greater than GREATER BEASTS. He tells Baod that his mother told him that when the things that made the world made BEASTS, they made things greater than BEASTS to carry their messages and uphold their laws. He has never seen one, but he does not want to, either.

Mirage cannot control how Baod will grow, but in the beginning, the changes will be very basic. It will take years for Baod to drastically change.

Mirage muses over the many ways he's heard of servants changing as he falls asleep. And Mirage begins to dream.

The world is pink and full of fluffy clouds. On one island is a rock in the shape of a sphere - one of Mirage's favorites. On another, a patchwork jungle.

The Lady of Dreams is a lady of peace, for in her do both Beast and Race find peace. Knowing this, Mirage approaches her gently.

If Mirage didn't know this was a dream, he'd swear he'd eaten bad berries. From her sleeves drip the sands of sleep and time, and her hair trails the endless seed-fluff clouds of this dream. She speaks in a thousand hushed lullabies, and in it Mirage can feel her creeping smile.

Hello, Mirage. I see you have forsaken play and adventure in the chance to speak with me. What could weigh on your mind so heavily?

Mirage knows he must be careful. Though she would never hurt him, she may end this dream as soon as she likes, and then he will never have the chance to plumb the depths of the Lady's infinite knowledge.

First things first, greet her with proper politeness and formality.

Yeah, knowledge of how to cure the madness of greater beasts would be very useful. As part of the lead up, you might mention that you're feeling regretful for having had to kill the mad beast, and wish there was an alternative.

Oh, and assuming she doesn't kick us out into wakefulness, we should also ask -why- beasts go mad in the first place, because that might be just as important as the knowledge of curing them.

Last, if she won't/can't answer, but doesn't end the dream... Perhaps we can ask her where we can find this knowledge in the waking world? Somehow, I get the feeling that if we're going to get answers, we're going to have to work for them.

Mirage eats MEAT! But sometimes he's up for a little change and eating berries isn't weird we should not bring it up ever again.

Outside of Mirage's mind, the Lady smiles on her featureless mask. He asks politely, after thanking her for the dreamland he provides to all.

Why such interest in saving the mad? They are your stepping stones to greatness. Consuming the hearts of your brothers makes you stronger in turn. Or do you want to wait for centuries?

The dream doesn't seem to be fading, but as always, the Lady of Dreams is being cryptic and evasive. He might get a few more questions before she gets bored of Mirage, though.

Because its the right thing to do. Sure, if things stayed the same, it is to our advantage, but a mad beast brings suffering, and suffers itself. Finding an alternative to simply killing them all when they lose their minds, or even discovering a way to prevent the madness completely, is a noble cause. We do not wish to wait centuries, but at the same time, simply standing by and eating the hearts of our kin as they spiral down into insanity, taking advantage of their suffering, is a bloody road, and is not a path we wish to take.

(Of course, if you go for the philosophy of enlightened self intrest over simple selflessness, we'd possibly also be immortalized in legend as a hero if we succeeded. But that doesn't matter as much as doing the right thing, I'm sure, right MIRAGE?)

The Lady pauses.

It is the folly of All that brought the Madness, and now it punishes all by driving Beasts into their homes, making them crazed. To cure it, one would have to silence the source, risking madness themselves.

Well that sounds...heroic. But Mirage doesn't like the idea of losing himself. He's still young. Maybe to get the strange answer off of his mind, he offers to play ball with the Lady.

I appreciate the offer, but this dream is prophetic, not silly. Maybe next time?

I will answer one more question, then it is time to wake, little one.
