A quest about reincarnation and the world you end up in.

Does not require having read CATALYST, but the protagonist is someone from that setting.

If you want to read more of my stuff, check out my wiki page: https://questden.org/wiki/EDMANGO

==========

Authors Note: This quest will contain 18+ content including violence, death, and cartoon gore. This is a bit of an experimental one, and will update with less frequency than CATALYST. Sexual content might be present but wont be the focus. Reader discretion is advised.

Start memorizing the perception book and many others in the library.
Learn GUILE with Riichi.
Innovate Scripting Pen.
If the library visit doesn't count as a time point then invent a breathing apparatus using wood to absorb CO2 and make OXYGEN, or something along those lines.

Take on the blacksmithing job to hold you over until you start teaching. Improve your crafting skills! Take on Precision with Nico too.
Actively: For the love of god, take more than the basic hunter course! You might learn something about the job that your father's about to go on that you could apply some extra runesmithing touches to. This is the last year of study, after this there will be plenty of research to do but classes are scarce! Look forward to spending some time with your mom after the deadline's done.

- Guile training with Riichi (we should try to take two more time points with her this year after this to bring it to 5 unless people vote to put a stat point in Guile, in which case, just one more this year)

- Psychology class

For background tasks, we cant afford Nico's training and Riichi gambling is risky with low Guile so...

Inovate the pen
Begin work on breathing device. After we get results on the end of the year, we can spend a time point next year to perfect it in time to visit Dopus.

Background Task (After the two above to best our odds): Gamble with 700 Shinies

I'm wondering if we take a psychology class if it will help us in gambling since we'd have a bit of knowledge on kin behavior and how they think in relationship to nervous tics or tells that they might have.

I'm still against gambling until we get a higher guile, and not changing my votes >>1006994
but just a thought.

I honestly don't feel bad for him. We tried to help him and he ignored us, so he got what he deserved.

Even though he might be better as a consultant, I wouldn't be surprised if he's still upset with us and would continue to his attempts to sabotage us.

>Riichi
Aw, we forgot to spend time with Mom and now I feel bad! Let's spend some time with her before she has to go back home to Mom and Dad!

Train Guile with Richii
Blacksmith job - We could use more money AND we need to train metalworking.

Personally I think we SHOULD gamble with Richii. Even if we lose, we'll learn something as long as Richii's around.

-If we end up taking a part time job, my vote for this years new background task would be gamble for a year. 2000 Shiny Buy In.

-If we end up NOT taking a part time job, my background vote is to learn precision with Nico. Little shit gets free food and the company of a pretty girl to essentially just hang out. He's lucky he's cute XD.

>Ignolia has the same boots as Marth, only slimmer
They must work differently than Marth’s boots.

If we could take a closer look at them, we could probably copy the runes on Ignolia’s boots and make something for other Kin that can’t fly on their own. Unfortunately, we don’t have a high enough Bond to ask Ignolia if she’d let us examine her boots. And even if she let us, I’m afraid we accidentally break them and she’d be piss at us!

Does anyone think that Riichi has heard some rumors from her gambling buddies? We could try asking her to see if she knows anything about what’s going on with the humans. But we really should spend more time with her.

Let’s Innovate the Runescripting Pen and work on the Water breathing Device in the background.

AUTHORS NOTE: Small update. Updating BACKGROUND TASKS to have a subsection for RESEARCH, RESEARCH TASKS are what you and your RUNESCRIPTERS are doing. Should the group split in the future and you create another group or work in another team it’ll function the same way. You can have a max of 3 BG tasks and 2 RESEARCH tasks. RESEARCH tasks arent just research it can be having everyone just make things or work on other stuff, but it always relates to the RUNESCRIPTERS.

> BACKGROUND - RESEARCH ASSIGNMENTS
You assign the UNDERWATER BREATHING APPERATUS task to the RUNESCRIPTERS, you have some leftover ideas from the SHAPE RUNE testing that might show some gains. They’re excited and want to come along on your trip to DOPUS if it works.

You also assign the RESEARCH ASSIGNMENT - INNOVATE ON THE SCRIPTING PEN task to the RUNESCRIPTERS, they’re not sure what gains could be gotten from this, but you all will work on it together. There’s SHIMON’S BLUEPRINTS for it, they’ll start there.

> SKIL/STAT APPLICATION
You decide to put the STAT point into LUCK. Your luck now has a [+2] modifier to it and you’re feeling PRETTY LUCKY. You wonder what effect this will have on the future.

You put your SKILL POINT into PERCEPTION, it was a tough call, but you think its the right decision. Your PERCEPTION now has a [+1] Modifier to it.

> PIERCING THE MIST - PREP
You’ve done about all that you can in terms of research given the time you have left. You gather everyone around and they all share their opinions. You know your father’s team is a team of 5, two use RUNESCRIPTED BOWS and CLAWS, one uses a SPEAR, one uses CLAWS and BEAKS, and your father uses a RAPIER. Apparently the bows were expensive, but this is good news as it means you won’t have to supply them. You’re willing to part with the RUNE SHARPED WEAPONS, it’s a shame you don’t have a pair of claws, but it’s not in your budget, so you’ll be keeling the RUNE SHARPENED DAGGER.

They have NO ARMOR given armor weighs a lot and it would ruin the WING-KIN ADVANTAGE of flight and mobility. So you decide to invest the 500 SHINIES towards the 5 CERAMIC PLATE VESTS. The rest of the inventory is a bit tricky. There’s a few ways you can go about this and the four of you debate this heavily for a bit. You eventually settle on getting a LOAN from IGNIS for 20k, enough for one more ingot and 5k left over for various purchases and dealings you might need to do. He acquires the Ingot and you end up making 1 HIGH QUALITY MIRROR SUN SCEPTER, 2 MIST LANTERNS, and 2 MIRROR SUN SCEPTERS. You end up with 1/3 of an ingot and donate it to the RUNESCRIPTERS for testing. DRIFT pitches in 200 SHINIES for the ARMOR and WILLIAM pitches in 300 SHINIES. IGNIS doesn’t pitch in for obvious reasons, he already pitched in the most, you feel like you kind of owe him. Maybe you should ask him out on a DATE in year 16, or do something nice for him while you build up your finances. At this point you’re all financially committed to this endeavor and want your dad to be successful beyond their expectations so as to pay back their investment. The development process takes a little bit, but you’re sure its going to be done before the deadline.

> LUCK - BLACK SCRIPTING MANUAL
You get a notice from the ROYAL LIBRARY stating that the individual that borrowed that book has gone MISSING, they missed their due date and were looked for, but they’re unable to locate the individual. This feels like BAD LUCK to you, but your LUCK says that maybe this is a blessing in disguise. It sure doesn’t feel like it. You get your ticket back and they let you know if it ever turns up you can rent the book for a year for free regardless.

[INTUITION] Weird how after you found out it was being held on the person who had it fled.
[UNDERSTANDING] We must be under closer watch then we thought
[GUILE] Please raise me so we can keep an eye out for spies or liars. Please.

You know you have access for [1 TIME POINT] to the library to just read, so you think up a new BACKGROUND TASK, LIBRARY MEMORIZATION, where you’ll try to memorize as many books as possible while you’re there. You add it to your potential TASK LIST.

> USE GOGGLES ON COMPANIONS
You put them on and examine everyone. You had a theory, that SHIMON was giving out the opposite COLOR MANUAL to the color he could see with his goggles. It was the right guess as IGNIS appears with a BLUE tinge, DRIFT appears with a GREEN tinge, and WILLIAM appears with a RED tinge. There’s something strange about DRIFT though, the connection between the spots in his MIND and CHEST is VERY THIN and SICKLY almost. You swap the goggles around and everyone gets a look. No one seems to have a bigger MANA VEIN, as you’ve taken to calling it, as the others. DRIFT’S seems weaker and disjointed, almost like two suns that want to meet but can’t. Everyone discusses things for a bit and they mention that learning their ACTUAL COLOR seemed to be EASIER than the one they were assigned. You feel deep in your bones that he did this to make it hard or even impossible on others to learn. It’s just a FEELING though. It’s a shame you aren’t tutoring anymore or you could have tested out this theory in teaching new students their matching colors and figuring that out.

You’re not sure if this is the SOUL of an individual, or something else. If it was a SOUL, then shouldn’t yours be bigger than the others, especially WILLIAMS? Or are your SOULS reset after every incarnation, meaning it gets harder and harder to gain KARMA as you go through lives. You feel like there has to be some carry over, some base level it doesn’t go below, but it was a SHOP after all. There’s too many questions and this is all metaphysical stuff that’s hard to comprehend. Your [UNDERSTANDING] Says it’s definitely going to be an IMPORTANT LINK in the future, but its applications are as of yet unknown, MANA VEINS sounds like a good name, it wonders if there are any applications to RUNESCRIPTING or even MAGIC that could come from utilizing it.

> MAKE AMENDS WITH SHIMON
You’d rather not. You have a good feeling that SHIMON was sent to make things hard for your plate whilst teasing success, but you specifically threw a wrench in his plans. Though why he let other kin pass after you did, like Pawn, is beyond your knowledge if that was his purpose. If you see him you guess you could recommend he try and apply to be a scientist with the kingdom, he does seem to be a better inventor than teacher. You think at the very least a conversation is in order if you see him.

> UPDATE - SABOTAGE?
All of the news you’ve gathered and conversations you’ve had are collating now. Your [UNDERSTANDING] has a report for you. The SABOTAGE to you and the RUNESCRIPTERS appears to be related to the HUMANS in some capacity. More specifically it seems to have heavily died down, barring a minor incident with the dojo which may have been unrelated. There’s been activity in CANUS and in the course of two years at least one death every [TIME POINT]. They’re guarded, but suck at keeping information quiet, so its easy to find out what’s happening.

It seems the deaths are related to your situation as they’ve all but stopped after the initial few events. But [UNDERSTANDING] says that it’s the CALM before the STORM, and you don’t know when the storm is coming, but it appears to have bought you some [TIME]. The exact purpose of this attacks is foggy, but your best guesses are that they do not want TENGU to become a beacon for MAGITECH, or to have a secret alliance with DOPUS. You wouldn’t be surprised if it all came down to GREED, but you feel there’s something missing. A link of some sort. Some sort of SECRET UNSPOKEN that the higher ups of your plate don’t know but desperately want to. You feel like it has to do with the natural progression of the plate but really can’t say more without going into speculative theories that might be way off base. One thing your [UNDERSTANDING] does note is that every time the DIPLOMAT came to QARA TENGU, they always were sighted at least once with SHIMON. It might be related, or it might not be, either way its useful information.

Your [UNDERSTANDING] task has been cleared and he can be reassigned to something new.

> BACKGROUND TASKS
You decide to take RIICHI up on her gambling task offer. You buy in with 700 SHINIES after debating exactly how much to spend. It’s certainly a gamble, and you’re not sure if you’ll win in the end, but you’re already gambling on your father with some MAGITECH, might as well try this too and hope your LUCK doesn’t go tumbling down. Maybe if you’re REALLY UNLUCKY in GAMBLING your DAD will be SUCCESSFUL in his hunt. You’re not sure if that’s how LUCK works, but its something.

As for NICO, you’re unsure weather you should take it or not, there’s the LIBRARY VISITS that you could do too, but you’re really indecisive about what to do at this point due to your lack of funds. You’ve alleviated it for now, but it’s still going to be a problem going forward, so you hold off.

> FREE TIME - GUILE WITH RIICHI
You spend time with one of your mothers. You head to her house occasionally and she cooks you some home cooked meals. Honestly you missed the smell and taste of it all. You visit your other parents every now and again but everyone has their own unique flavor they bring to the table and this one is of nostalgia. Most of your time is spent at the GAMBLING HALL, it’s a dark place lit up by candlelight, torches, and the occasional crank lantern. SHIMON must have pawned one off when he lost here. The smell of smoke is heavy in this place as half the players are smoking, your mom included. Your mom drags you around to a bunch of different games. There are games of chance, games of skill, and games of strength. You participate in several of them just to get your bearings. A lot of the time you’re talking to your opponents, the game is secondary to them and the socialization is where it’s at. There are several times that you’re tripped up by the conversation or say things you shouldn’t have revealed of your strategy due to your BOASTING. It teaches you PATIENCE which is still fairly low. There’s also one thing that still surprises you, it’s like your mom turns into a BEAST when she starts to gamble, like a switch is flipped. You’d say she’s a HARD CORE GAMBLER, but it looks like she only ever breaks slightly above even. You wonder if that’s on purpose.

You also uncover some rumors you hadn’t actually heard from others while you’re here. Apparently the QUEEN plans to select an HEIR in YEAR 20 through the ceremonial CHALLENGE to those WING-KIN that desire entrance. Apparently it will require ASSEMBLING A TEAM, though this is supposed to be kept quiet from the ROYALS, the others there claim it’s an open secret. The team requires 1 MAGITECH SCIENTIST, 1 LEADER, 1 WARRIOR, and 1 WILD CARD. The exact examination is unclear, but it’s something to consider.

[UN LOGIC] Must be some kind of trial where their leadership and delegation is tested
[UN LOGIC] I wonder what form the challenge will take, maybe it will be a kind of elimination based tournament?
[UN LOGIC] I assume there will be at least 10 teams that actually get to participate
[UN LOGIC] Though the criteria they’re going about to pick the LEADERS is up in the air
[UN LOGIC] I assume there’s also no age restriction, so it could be old and young kin in the running

You think about that for a moment. You know two queen candidates from what HOOK has told you, and there’s a few others roaming around you haven’t met. You might be approached by one of them the closer it gets to the deadline as you are one of the leading figures in the field.

Time progresses slowly as you rekindle your relationship with RIICHI, she’s proud of the woman you’re becoming and so you talk a bit about boys, girls, relationships, what is hot vs cute. You have these memories of SABA, but he never really figured this stuff out, or had a family figure that could help him through this. So it’s a heartwarming experience to be able to share it with a parent. She says that there are basically TWO WAYS of accomplishing something like that.

You could be PURSUASIVE, which means you’ll be a bit domineering, though this can be subtle. A lot of kin definitely find this to be HOT, but some kin find this to be MANIPULATIVE.

You could also be CHARMING, which means you’ll be acting with an alluring grace, this can also be subtle. A lot of kin tend to find this CUTE, but some find this to be CHILDLIKE as well.

There are PROS and CONS to each of these approaches, but you could always bash through with RAW CHARISMA and pursue the path of BEAUTY, though this path tends to lead to the destruction of kingdoms. You question her on this, she says that she once heard a story, a beauty that could destroy kingdoms, or something like that. That it led to the downfall of a KINGDOM? You ask where she heard the story but she’s not able to tell you.

Riichi: I think it was told to me as history when I was a chick.
Riichi: Something Something Black Something was destroyed by monsters
Riichi: So the story goes that the WHITE kingdom existed alongside the BLACK kingdom.
Riichi: The BLACK kingdom was new and very diplomatic, enough that they got their own land as a vassal.
Riichi: Time passed and they became prosperous, eventually seceding.
Riichi: To promote diplomacy between the two kingdoms a marriage was proposed, one between the PRINCESS of the WHITE kingdom
Riichi: And a PRINCESS from the BLACK KINGDOM. The two hated each other, but wielded enormous political power.
Riichi: so they did the sensible thing and swayed their courts, instigating a war between the two kingdoms.
Riichi: But on the eve of the battle, a group of monsters came to attack the BLACK KINGDOM, destroying it.
Riichi: The warriors survived, but blamed the PRINCESSES for the event.
Riichi: Thus they became the beauties that could destroy kingdoms.
Riichi: It’s unsure if this is about HUMANS, BEAST-KIN, or something else, I’m not even sure if it’s a true story.
Riichi: But the princesses of the tale were quite seductive.
You: I think I’d like to read or hear the full original story
Riichi: I’ll see if I can find the book its from or where I heard it, it was when I was a chick,
Riichi: so it’s fuzzy in my memory

You think it over a bit, it looks like your CHARISMA has a few avenues for it to evolve. It’s possible to pick up all 3 SKILLS you think, but it will take active effort for you to make gains in one path or the other. You could take a NEGOTIATION class to learn more about PURSUASION, a SINGING class to learn more about CHARM, or find someone to teach you about SEDUCTION, you know that that is a thing, but you just mentally cant bring yourself to practice that until you’re at least 18. You could also ask IGNIS for help as he does seem to be fairly proficient in CHARISMA. He does look like he’s had something on his mind lately, he’d probably appreciate you spending [TIME] with him. Same for WILLIAM, but apparently they’re both too TIMID to bring it up themselves, which is funny because you’re sure WILLIAM’S inner WILLAMINA would probably scream to SCREW SUBTLETIES.

The last few days of the [TIME POINT] come by and you notice something with your PERCEPTION, it was a brief moment, but you thought you saw NICO in here. He was in the far back, talking to someone. They were hooded, it looked like a heated argument. There was something red coming out of his mouth. You only saw it for a split second before looking away, then when you looked back, realizing it was him, he was gone.

[GUILE] What was he doing here? And what could he have been arguing about.
[UNDERSTANDING] I’ll double check the memory and let you know if you missed something, otherwise I’ll stay silent.

You spent [200 SHINIES] at the gambling hall.
You earned [213 SHINIES] in winnings!
Your GUILE stat has increased to rank 3
Your CHARISMA yearns to break past it’s soft cap
- Breaking past your SOFT CAP will require getting a CHARISMA SKILL to RANK 3

> CLASS - PSYCHOLOGY
You take this class, wondering what exactly you’ll learn, yes it’s about the psychology of kin, but you’re curious how it would differ from Saba’s Knowledge. Glide’s here too, he wants the easy A, so you spend a bunch of time kind of chatting when nothings going on in class. The class starts with an irate looking wing-kin, only, she doesn’t have WINGS. She’s got ARMS. She’s like some kind of FLIGHTLESS BIRD, it revulses you slightly for some reason, like its unnatural. After a moment you’re back to normal though and the feeling fades. It surprises you exactly how strong your reaction was. The WING-KIN introduces themselves as YOWIE, a male YETI. Oops, you mentally mean he. They begin their lecture.

Yowie: Before you ask, yes I’m a wing-kin
Yowie: No I can’t fly
Yowie: I was born as a mix between a falcon and a bear and got the short end of the stick.
Yowie: Anyway, here’s the one sentence summary of this class. All kin, no matter what, desire the same three things.
Yowie: They want to EAT, FUCK, and SLEEP.

There’s some chuckles around the class and murmuring, Yowie pulls out his hand, claws appearing and scratches the chalkboard, it’s a sickening sharp sound that stirs everyone to attention.

Yowie: As I was saying, it’s the basic desire endemic to all of us.
Yowie: Barring a few exceptions of course.
Yowie: We’re going to talk about the mental differences between Wing, Beast, Insect, and Humans.
Yowie: We don’t know much about the AQUANS, so I can’t speak on them.

He goes on a lengthy ramble about the key points endemic to each race.

HUMANS as a collective are GREEDY, they typically WANT things or WANT to WANT things, this can be changed by living in different cultures and societies, but visiting the HUMAN CAPITAL will show you this is a truth. BEAST-KIN are DUMB and TRUSTING, they latch on to the first kin they care about and remain loyal through their lives. They usually don’t pursue academia, and even at the academy in CANUS there is only a 20% Graduation rate for BEAST-KIN. INSECT-KIN are filled with WRATH, they’re not GREEDY in the traditional sense, they only want land to expand, but if you encroach on their rights or attempt to harm or take away from them they hold a GRUDGE. And WING-KIN are PRIDEFUL, they are typically martially skilled and can travel where they want, literally being above others.

[UNDERSTANDING] Woah this guy is racist as fuck.
[UN LOGIC] Yeah um, let’s take this with a grain of salt.
[???] Y’know I’m usually for this kind of thought, but even I think that’s a little black and white of the situation
[KNOWLEDGE] Okay we know at least from [08-C] that this is just labeling kin derogatorily

There are several students that object to these declarations as soon as he finishes speaking, it practically an outcry. Students try to debate the teacher on that, but he simply kicks them out and fails them if after a few minutes of giving answers they just start yelling. You take the lessons as they come, just goofing off with GLIDE, you’re not taking this class seriously. You learn more about GLIDE’S overbearing parents, they want him to be a hunter, but also the best in every field, it’s just a pain to him, so he’s putting in minimal effort, going to be a hunter and then bugger off somewhere. After thinking about it honestly, you wouldn’t care if this class was your first failure. You just don’t agree with this point of view that Yowie is presenting. Many kin are disgusted by the things Yowie says. She talks about WING-KIN first mindsets and the superiority of their race and you just gag at that. There were too many kin like that on [FAUNUS 08-C], though most of them died thankfully. A few kin eventually start believing the crap that he’s spewing.

Maybe, just maybe, there might be some small inklings of truth in there, but it’s hard to see. He has a way of being PURSUASIVE, even if the content really rubs your feathers the wrong way. He knows and talks a lot about events in history from different perspectives, and he’s patient, only kicking out the really terrible ones. You fail this course, mostly because you refuse to take the final exam seriously. Your PRIDE, KNOWLEDGE, and ROMANTIC ORIENTATION together refuse to give in to even pretend like you give a shit about this. You leave a terrible review of the professor and hope something will come of it. Maybe you’ll have different thoughts in a few TP, but right now you’re not all that happy.

You gained [2 STRESS] from FAILING the class.
Your PATIENCE skill has increased to rank 2
You feel like you could have learned something about CHARISMA in this class but it didn’t stick
Your BOND with GLIDE has increased to rank 2!
- Glide will occasionally suggest an activity for you to do with them
- Though you shouldn’t count on his initiative, he’s VERY LAZY

> EVENT - PIERCING THE MIST I
Your father comes near the end of the deadline. You’ve already messaged him you’re prepared and he comes with his crew. DRACO is the leader, he’s the parties OVERSEER, in charge of ORDERS and PLANNING. MAGNUS is a BOW and CLAW user, he wears a sash over his eyes that he can see through and is a DOVE. BALK is a very tall BLUE JAY, she’s gorgeous and wields a BOW and CLAW as well. SNOW PEA is an OWL, he is BIG, BULKY, and uses a BEAK and CLAW, but you imagine he also uses his BARE FISTS from the looks of him. Lastly there’s GUNGNIR she’s a very lithe HUMMINGBIRD that wields a SPEAR. You’ve already had their measurements taken and provide the VESTS, they’re confused at first, but it has all the same pockets their normal gear has and after a few adjustments fits tight on their bodies. They try it out and test their weapons on it and are seemingly pleased by the results. You already borrowed your FATHER’S GEAR to SHARPEN it, the others were busy making the final preparations so they were unable to inscribe the rest of his team’s weapons.

SNOW PEA has trouble wearing the vest due to his MASSIVE SIZE, but you’re able to get it to work and slot in a few extra plates. The three test fly them and feel they work just as good as their normal clothes. You also hand them the MAGITECH creations you’ve toiled away on with your crew. The group of you give them all test runs using the mist room, which IGNIS is thinking at this point might be better to outright BUY then to keep using in this way. It costs about 50,000 SHINIES though, so he holds off for now. They use the prototype tools before testing their actual tools a few times. Everyone seems satisfied and is praising your groups ingenuity.

The group discusses plans while you let your father know how much you end up spending. It cost you around 4 ingots worth of ARCANUM including testing with a little more than 2 ingots being used in the final product. You explain you wanted, no, needed to make sure everything worked properly. He gives you a bug hug and exclaims that he’s incredibly proud of you, suggesting you sell some of the remaining prototypes or something to try to recoup the costs. You explain that most of the arcanum is used up as you wanted to see exactly how much energy use each would take.

Draco: I’ll do my best to come back with a killing in parts so you can recoup the costs.
Draco: We can probably do a few other hunts with these tools too.
Draco: Plan was to come back in [4 TP], but I think we’ll update that to [6 TP] and see if we can get a good haul.
You: Please be careful. I don’t want you getting too hurt, that’s why we invested in these vests too.
Draco: I’m sure if you figured out how long these would last, or sold replacement plates you could make insane profit.
Draco: Wing-Kin don’t typically wear armor since it stops flight
Draco: Well, unless its RUNESCRIPTED, can you make LIGHTENED things? LIGHTENED iron armor would be great.
You: No, I don’t know what that rune even looks like.
You: If you can get a hold of one I might be able to reverse engineer it
You: But it’s all theoretical, I might break it, and I don’t even know if its possible to reverse engineer RUNES yet.
Draco: You’re something special Chi Sava. You were once a small young girl.
Draco: Now you’re turning into a bright young woman. I’m proud to have had you.

You break into tears a little bit, you always wanted the approval of a father figure, but this hit you square in the sSOUL, like a LIFE LONG AMBITION was just accomplished. You feel several ripples go out through your mind and an incredible migrane starts to grow. At first you thought it was nothing, but when your father left you noticed that you were a mess. You look to your side. It’s strange, but WILLIAM and IGNIS appear to be going through the same thing. Drift is concerned for the group of you. The three of you lie down together in a pile of pillows and try to relax, a little while later the pain passes at once. The last time this happened [UNDERSTANDING] popped up, you wonder what will happen this time, and what’s going on with the other two. You ask WILLIAM if he’s awakened his [INNATE SKILL] and he replies that he hasn't. IGNIS asks what that is, and you explain it, he’s surprised and hopes he gets one too.

[UNDERSTANDING] This didn’t happen when SABA got his. Maybe this plate’s mystical laws are different?
[UN LOGIC] Thermodynamics is already out the window, so probably.

>lifelong ambition fulfilled, father figure's approval
poor Saba... Glad he fulfilled one of his lifelong dream, despite it being in another life

I hope Nico didn't get kidnapped by a Black Lotus member...

- BACKGROUND TASK: Memorize books! (I think the queen might meet with us again and ask for a favor here)

- Task UNDERSTANDING with figuring out some teaching methods Saba employed as a professor since we'll be becoming teachers soon. If psychology couldn't help us, then UNDERSTANDING will!

- Give our library ticket to Pawn as a peace offering, for free. we don't really need it now that we can memorize books (don't tell him that). tell him he can get any book he wants, but recommend the Journeyman's book. Though warn he might need extra time to break the code. You're willing to tutor him to help break the code though (As a bonding experience) Just tell him to let us know what he decides if he gets the Journeyman's book. Make it clear that while you want to invent stuff to help bring Tengu's quality of life better, you are more interested in finding ways to teach magitech and help raise those numbers of bright new magitech scientists to change the world. Inventing you feel is a good way to get a good understanding in MANA to help teach. Maybe that can cool his competitiveness with us a bit. Mention that the black runescripting manual went missing. (maybe do this after the negotiation class

- TIMEPOINT 1: Negotiation class to break charisma's cap...
or tactics to FINALLY give Strategy some love. He's probably suffering from depression right now for not giving him attention.

- TIMEPOINT 2: Guile training with Riichi... AGAIN. And invite Glide as a bonding experience, his chillness can make for such a good poker face, maybe you'll learn something from him too

- MEAL WITH HOOK, high quality talk briefly about what you heard about the CHALLENGE and how you could help her. also bring some Pon Pops to share with her and tell her your bro made them, and remember to tell her that he'd like to bond with her someday. He is such a good hunter and can make for a good warrior for the challenge, and us as a magitech scientist. She will be the leader of course, so recommend some leader classes and tactics classes.

Though if she can't visit us or if Glide doesn't want to have Guile training with us then...

MEAL WITH GLIDE High quality. Learn how he can keep his stress levels so stable.

I say we FINISH OUT ARCHAEOLOGY and CONTINUE GUILE TRAINING WITH RIICHI.

Yeah, spending our meal event now should help mitigate some stress. I think it's too early out to be talking to HOOK, though, and >>1007251's phrasing comes off as a bit heavy-handed.

If you can't bond more with GLIDE during these two lessons, then yeah, spend the meal event with him. If you do manage to bond with him organically - I approve of this "just shooting the shit" bond, and it'd probably lend itself well to just organic time-spending - I'd rather switch the target to CONFRONTING NICO about what you saw. (Assigning UNDERSTANDING to that weirdness seems as good a task as any, in the meantime.) Make sure he knows you're coming from a place of concern for him rather than suspicion of him, of course.
>>
No. 1007258 ID: e51896

Also, I think we want to buy a mage hat as part of our quality of life purchases. Similar to what Shimon and Yowie wore, except pink, and with a large heart pin, just like her hairpin. We'll wear it when we start teaching magitech next year.

>>1007256
Yeah, that might be heavy handed to talk about. I still want to spend the meal time with Hook or Glide, but we'll leave out discussions the challenge if we hang with Hook. but I still want to give her some Pon Pops to help set things to have her reconnect with Pon. Though right now, I think I'll lean more towards a meal with Glide if he doesn't take a class or visit Riichi with us.

But whoever we take a meal with, I'd say we should start raising our bond with Hook starting next year.

If we do have a meal to talk with Nico, I'd say go easy on him on it. If he doesn't want to talk about it, respect his privacy and don't press him too much about it, as we don't want our bond with him to diminish. Though maybe we can bring Drift along since he's Nico's friend? (maybe our guile can persuade him to talk to us about it.)

Now that I think about it, when we first met William years ago, maybe the reason why Hook was visiting Pon, Chi, and Noodle was to probably find potential teammates for when she takes the challenge in the future now that I think about it. It would be cool if her team consisted of herself as the leader, Chi as the magitech scientist, Hook as the wilcard, and Pon as the warrior.

>Shimon and opposite colors
It's possible starting with your own color makes it harder to learn further colors. Or at least, It's possible he thinks so.

There are two main possibilities about Shimon: either he's a bad teacher on purpose, or he's a genuinely bad teacher and that's why they sent him. Either way, it's a given his homeland wanted him to fail. I lean towards the latter: I doubt he was in on it.

>>Time Points
1:Take the Archeology class
2: Do some dedicated work on the Water Breathing Apparatus. Got a deadline and the sooner its finished, the better.

We should really consider taking Draco's advice on the Vests, and make an effort to try and figure out a method of mass production, and not just because of the money. It might be important later if that "Calm before the storm" premonition turns out to be true.
Also, on the Psychology class, is it just me or did all the sins and failings of the various kin seem rather...deadly? Especially if you add in the Aquans apparent love of food. I wonder if there are two other kins we're not aware of?

>Background Task:
Start working on a group portrait of the Runecrafters and everyone staying in the house for Ignis. I feel like he would really appreciate it. Maybe put him in the center.

>>1007251

Just want to point out on this note that I added 3 more possible books in the discussion thread if anyone thinks they would be useful for this.

how did we make the ceramic plates again? Did we use the black smith's forge or did the runescripters make them on our own? Because that might actually be a good way to make some quick money without changing things TOO much. I mean they're simple to make and cheap(ish) so if nothing else the group could make spares in their free time to sell to maybe set up a group fund so we wouldn't have to keep paying for things out of pocket all the time. Because things are starting to become expensive.

> Further thoughts on PSYCHOLOGY
I can actually see how he'd be PERSUASIVE about it without coming off as pants-on-head dumb - maybe there are observable psychological trends among the different types of kin? But Mr. Teacher said it himself; that those raised among other kinds may end up breaking their mold.

Ergo, it's not difficult to realize that his assumptions regarding these trends are a classic case of CORRELATION NOT EQUALLING CAUSATION (a phrase Saba oh so loved to use during his gadfly professor days). That is, these observable traits are far more likely to be a product of a kin's environment and upbringing than of their biological species. It's not hard to assume that the supposed GREED displayed by humans are more HISTORICALLY SYSTEMIC in nature than that of NATURAL DISPOSITION. (This is all assuming that these trends EXIST as he says it does, to begin with.)

In fact, some of your colleagues have even theorized that CANUS EDUCATION HAS BEEN ACTIVELY SABOTAGED by an outside force.

Heck, you might even suspect that the teacher was PROJECTING HIS PERSONAL PROBLEMS onto what ought to be an impartial field of science that supposedly aims to study PEOPLE, not ANIMALS.

The UNFORTUNATE TRUTH about psychology is, however, that regardless of what conclusion you come to, IT'S ALL GUESSWORK. ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE has NO PLACE in a respectable field of scientific study, but that's all PSYCHOLOGY has to work with, at least for now. You're not even sure what anyone is thinking, trying to take that course in this day and age. Though you suppose SOMEONE has to make progress of some kind for things to start improving.

If you ever retake the class or encounter the teacher or more receptive students as you go about your day, you're not sure if your PATIENCE is enough to stop your PRIDE from speaking out regarding these conclusions you made.

Or maybe you already wrote all of this as such in your positively NUCLEAR review of him. Heck, maybe THAT'S what you were working on instead of your final exam - the beginnings of a 10-page MONSTER of a peer-review paper titled "A Concerned Student's Assessment of Both Teacher and Subject," wherein you bring all of your ANGER, STRESS, PRIDE, LOGIC, KNOWLEDGE, and CREATIVITY to bear in systematically outlining each of his major points before proceeding to tear into every single one of them in every way you can possibly conceive, concluding with a scathing accusation of him achieving THE HEIGHT OF ARROGANCE for instantly failing so many students for daring to disagree with him in such a GUESSWORK-RELIANT field of study. You're PATIENT enough to try and keep your language polite for the most part and hold off on the more PROBLEMATIC ad-hominem attacks you could have included; the last thing you want is for you yourself to be accused of discriminating. Still, anyone with half a brain for reading comprehension is liable to GET THEIR FACES (figuratively) MELTED OFF by the sheer animosity implied by the plain contents upon reading it. This ought to be AN ACHIEVEMENT IN VITRIOL, the likes of which this field has never seen (in this world).

Okay, there's only one possibility that would redeem him. His goggles might have been sabotaged to show the wrong colors. I feel it is incredibly unlikely though.

Guile training with Riichi.

Also make sure Nico is alright. Something red coming out of his mouth implies he was injured.

Oh, Ignis and William want to spend time with Chi... This year is going to be mostly full of Guile training though. Where can we fit in the time?

Hmm, I think next update we should take the second Negotiation class to get rank 3, and spend time with one of the boys instead of guile training. The update after that, spend time with the other one instead of taking any classes, and finish off guile training.

-Guile with Richi
It's our last opportunity to do so without having to pay her for travel expenses and trouble and what not. Also, we seem to be entering a point in our life where we're gonna need it.

Invent
A water breathing apparatus is somewhat more complicated than it first lets on. There are 4 main challenges:
Oxygen
Regulation
Pressure
Swimming Capability

Notably, as a Wing Kin, our HOLLOW BONES seriously differentiate us from our mammalian counterparts in regards to diving. We get BETTER oxygen capacity, but REDUCED Swimming capability and Pressure Resistance. The pressure issue in particular is WAY more dangerous to us than to a mammal. Descending too quickly can CRUSH US. Ascending too quickly can cause our bones to outgas or EXPLODE. Not that we can normally get that deep anyway, since we should normally be to buoyant to dive reliably.

On the oxygen side of things, a regulator that doesn't rupture the lungs should be doable enough with a pressure sensor and a trigger rune, but we're missing OXYGEN STORAGE. Unless we want to shell out for STEEL, we need to experiment to find a Rune that can hold physical matter. I'm thinking Storage + Null = Void might do it. Obviously we need this for an OXYGEN TANK design, but we'll still need at least a small amount of storage to make a reliable GILL SYSTEM, though a small steel tank might be more viable there.

Personally I suggest a 2 Part Solution. A GILL system based on SHARKS, and a DYNAMIC PRESSURE BARRIER.
Sharks breath through constant motion, forcing water through their gills as they move.
Likewise, we can make a propulsion device that passes large volumes of water through a set of runes that extracts the dissolved gasses. Solving the OXYGEN and SWIMMING CAPABILITY problems together. Experiments will need to be done to find the optimal speed and exchange surface. In Saba's world oxygen density dissolved in water tended to be about 20 times less than in air. Since thermodynamics seem to work differently, that ratio here will also probably be different.

As for the DYNAMIC PRESSURE BARRIER, two pressure sensors, one on the inside of the regulator, one on the outside of the body, tie in via wires or mana links to a Harness. The harness not only mounts the SHARK GILL system, but contains runes that either draw in or push out the surrounding air of fluid to slowly equalize the the pressure on the body. The core device will likely actually be three separate devices: Pressure up, Pressure Down, and the Power and Control Hub.

This is all pretty extra when compared to a simple scuba tank and pressure outfit, but I think it would be worth it. Not only would we be able to visit our friend, but this would enable trade and diplomatic outreach between our nations. We'd basically get a guaranteed spot as Magitech Scientist during queen selection, our nation would finally get an edge on those damned humans, and we'd surely be given a shitload of money by the royalty. All while we are still relatively under the radar. I fear we will start getting watched by the humans MUCH more closely once we start teaching.

I have a bad feeling about this. I honestly think we should spend a little time practicing our martial arts so that we can have a decent chance of protecting ourself if we need to.

And maybe meditate to reduce our stress.

We still haven't taken the second hunter course? We're going to be woefully underprepared for expeditions. That takes priority over all else while we're in the academy!
Charisma path: Be charming. Be the opposite of whatever professor bugbear was doing, work on that Patience so you could stand up to him without resorting to yelling. Is Patience a charisma skill? Later, we should use Meditation to build a room for it, maybe while we're practicing charisma with Ignis.
Understanding task: Study Drift and internal mana circuit function. What happens when you complete the circuit?
Drift may be lazy, but this is a useful quality on the runescripting team - assign him tasks that could stand to be automated or optimized, who knows what clever solutions he will prototype.
Background task: Take on library memorization. The upside of our luck is an additional use of the library ticket, so take the big book of everything, or the legendary starlight songstress. Maybe some speculative fiction will spark our creativity. Heck, ask the librarian if she recognizes Riichi's story.

> WARDROBE UPDATE
You decide to get a MAGITECH HAT, it looks exactly like a WIZARD HAT from your old world, but it’s waterproof. It’s covering up the more unruly parts of your head-feathers but you think it looks nice. There’s nothing special about it, but you could always do some RUNESCRIPTING on it later to modify it if you want. It’s PINK just like your hair clip, you get a BLACK PIN that matches it and pin it to the hat. You like the symbolism of your MANA VEIN’S color being on it. It costs you [40 SHINIES] to get it custom made by CHIPPER. At this point you’ve developed a good working relationship with CHIPPER from frequent shopping.

You’ve developed a CONTACT with CHIPPER starting at rank 3
- Chipper will make you things at a discount
- Chipper will let you in on the occasional cool deal when you use his services
- Chipper can help you get manufacturing services at reduced rates
CONTACTS are like bonds but specifically related to businesses
You can tell that CHIPPER just really likes working, it’s not that he doesn’t want a normal bond, it’s that he’s INDUSTRIOUS and a WORKAHOLIC. You imagine if you hire him in a more permanent sense in the future it will be possible to form a normal BOND with him.

> BACKGROUND TASKS
You decide to pick up the task LIBRARY MEMORIZATION, you’ll memorize [6 TP] of books this year and be updated on which ones you’ve memorized. You can drop this task at any time and you’ll be updated with the books up to the time you’ve spent.

> THOUGHTS
You had a few fleeting thoughts in the last bit of [TIME]. You were thinking of giving PAWN the library ticket in an attempt to befriend him. Maybe he’ll see it as a peace offering and that you’re actually more interested in benefiting everyone then being super greedy? You’re unsure, but it could be a good first step.

You were thinking of having dinner with HOOK at some point to maybe discuss the Queen competition. But the thought occurred to you that you could also try to discuss it with IGNOLIA or any of the other candidates should you meet them. There should be one in the TACTICS class, and there should even be some ADULTS that are going to make their bid for queen. Though you doubt anyone older than 26 at the time of the competition is applying based off of what you know, so it really might just be those of your generation and BELOW. Maybe you’ll meet one as a teacher.

You also think about the FINANCIAL side of things. You’re going to need money soon. Since this plate’s exports are typically HUNTERS and SHINIES, it might be a good idea to mass produce the CERAMIC PLATE VESTS, or see about finding someone interested. You definitely think the HUNTERS would be interested, and know without a doubt that the ROYALS would be interested too. The modularity of the design means some spaces can be protected with other materials whilst keeping the light weight.

There’s also the CHI-LLERS, and a similar conundrum occurs, you talk with PON and he doesn’t think it will affect his margins, he’s already got a pretty popular client base and cheap prices. He says the food markets are already heavily interested in what his CHI-LLER can do after their several discussions with him. He’s actually pretty popular amongst the older women of the community and blushes a little bit when you poke fun at him for being into older ladies.

You’ll need to spend a [TIME POINT] on financial negotiations though, this includes negotiations between your fellow RUNESCRIPTERS as for their cut of the funds. The CHI-LLER was all your design and PON doesen’t need a cut. You think the better your GUILE, CHARISMA, and PURSUASION, the easier it will be to negotiate with others. Or you could hand the job off to someone more experienced like IGNIS or WILLIAM as a BIG FAVOR or for a CUT OF THE PROFITS. They’ll be preoccupied for the TP required for the negotiations and can’t help research though.

You’ve unlocked a CHALLENGE: INCORPORATED
- Negotiate with the any of the following groups to establish the foundations of your business
= The HUNTERS
= The ROYALS
= The FOOD VENDORS
REWARDS: Establish Business relations and their initial orders
TIPS: It takes 1 TP to negotiate with each individual group, these are just the groups you and your companions know of right now, there are more that you can discover.

[UN LOGIC] I’d finish up classes and get all these ducks in a row before committing yourself to negotiating
[UN LOGIC] And while you might get more control over the deal, maybe its better to delegate if you’re in a rush
[UN LOGIC] We do have time until our debt is needed and we won’t have to worry about classes next year, just teaching
[UN LOGIC] Which means steady income.
[GUILE] One thing to keep in mind too is that each group wants and would pay different amounts for different things
[GUILE] The HUNTERS probably want WEAPONS and ARMOR and will pay more for those
[GUILE] The VENDORS probably want the CHI-LLERs and will pay more for those
[GUILE] The ROYALS probably want EVERYTHING but will pay less than the others

AUTHORS NOTE: So I was thinking of a few ways of doing this and came to a final conclusion. You’re going to get a skill check if you do the negotiations. The better you do, the higher your profits. You can hire someone like IGNIS or WILLIAM to do the negotiations for you, however they’ll take a cut of the deal as they are putting in the work. Only one Kin can do this task, and their roll will count as the results for all the financial stuff that’s yet to be decided. You could also try to convince them to do the work for you for free, but they might make demands of you in the future.

Once that’s done you’ll have a seperate EVENT where you will decide method of production and how much time investment you want to give based off of the order. Automation is possible, but requires HIRING OTHERS and spending a TP on MANAGEMENT. You could also HIRE A MANAGER or assign a Runescripter, but that requires more payment. So you could earn more by doing as much yourself as possible, or delegate to earn less and have more free time.

> MEAL EVENT - GLIDE HQ DINNER
You take GLIDE out for a meal, this time its a series of kind of fancy food stalls, there’s a big variety of small snackish food that you are expected to buy piecemeal from different stalls. It leads to a lot of good walking and talking. The two of you just sort of babble about different things you’re interested. Really you just shoot the shit as it were. It’s a very casual relationship that the two of you have. You get the feeling that GLIDE is kind of an INTROVERT. But mostly the kind of introvert that just wants to be lazy, if he can be lazy with others he doesn’t mind it, but its more of if his friends are too demanding or need too much attention he just gets drained.

You ask him if his mom is some kind of Martial Artist or master of something since he talks about her making him do stuff a lot. He laughs at that.

Glide: Well, she was.
Glide: She was like… a savant I guess you could say?
Glide: The long and short of it is that she’s disabled now, so she’s kind of living through me?
Glide: It’s a weird relationship and I’m kind of at the age where I wanna do my own thing you know?
Glide: Love her to death, but she can’t keep living like that. Well, I guess I’d feel similar if I lost an ARM and a LEG.
You: If you don’t mind me asking, how’d that happen?
Glide: Eh, I don’t want to get into it.
Glide: Let’s just say monsters were involved and leave it at that.

The conversation doesn’t skip a beat as it continues to flow naturally. You thank your CHARISMA and GLIDE’S LAID BACK ATTITUDE that it didn't turn into a faux pas. By the end of the night you’ve had a good time and Glide hands you [10 SHINIES]

Glide: I felt bad you were paying for everything and yer not even my girl or anything.
You: Oh, you sure? I mostly just wanted to kind of BOND, get to know you. I usually pay for my friends.
You: Everyone’s so busy all the time so moments like these are hard to come by.
Glide: Yeah I get that, and I’m sure, don’t wanna feel like I owe you or anything.

Your BOND with GLIDE has reached rank 3!
- GLIDE will occasionally help you on tasks you are having trouble with
CONGRATS! You’ve completed the goal - GET YOUR REASONABLY ACHIEVABLE BONDS UP TO RANK 3!
- You’ve made bonds with a lot of kin now, they appreciate the attention you’re giving them.
- You’ve gained 3 GP!
- Your current GP is 9/10
You lose 1 STRESS from the nice meal

> FREE TIME - GUILE WITH RIICHI
You spend more time with your mom. She’s glad you’re taking the whole spending time with her thing seriously. You’re starting to get a pretty good grasp on BLUFFING, opponents you were having trouble with before are becoming more easily readable. The main game this gamble house plays is something reminiscent of a MAFIA game. They call it UNDERGROUND, the rules are pretty simple. Each character has a role and a task. There are two teams, one is the UNDERGROUND, the other is the ROYALS, their objective is to eliminate the players of the other team. The surviving members of the winning team earn the pot split betwixt them. You remember something similar from Saba’s world, he was always REALLY BAD AT IT. It’s a game about DECEPTION. However one of your opponents, whom you see quite frequently in fact is a master of a different guile tactic, INTIMIDATION. Threats and misdirections are par for the course with him. His name is RUFIOH, he’s a penguin, which is another flightless wing-kin.

Playing against him is honestly pretty stressful and half the time he has you questioning what you already know about your opponents. Even when he’s on your team there are times you question his loyalties, as it appears his objective is to get everyone to turn on each other so that he’s the last remaining player to win it all. To your surprise, the tactic of removing him early doesen’t do you any favors as he then turns your allies against you. Its a bit stressful in a mentally stimulating way. You LOGIC your way through most scenarios, but it’s hard when you’re not sure what’s the TRUTH or whats a LIE. Another thing that pisses you off about the guy is that he’s filthy rich, the amount of games he’s won makes you assume he must be loaded as he continuously preys on the lower skilled players. You wonder how RIICHI and SHIMON would fair against him.

Your [COURAGE] apologizes to you frequently as it fails you, the penguin is quite INTIMIDATING and you’re not able to hold up too much against his tactics even though your logic is sound. It’s a fine balance between revealing what you know, and staying silent to ensure victory. Your Mother is proud of your guts to stick through it to the end and coaches you in between the short 5-10 minute rounds.

Your GUILE stat has increased to rank 4
- You get the feeling it will take more than one session to rank your GUILE up again
You’ve learned a little bit about INTIMIDATION, the art of scaring your foe into doing what you want
You’ve learned a little bit about DECEPTION, the art of LYING
- You get the feeling that breaking your GUILE stat’s SOFT CAP will require learning BOTH.
You gained a little COURAGE EXPERIENCE through the process
You gained [1 STRESS] from the INTIMIDATION TACTICS of your opponents
You lost [58 SHINIES] from gambling against a stronger foe

You ask RIICHI about the book that story was from, but she says it hasn't been that long in her search so she’s not come up with anything. She’ll let you know when she finds something. You pout a little bit but understand.

[GUILE] Thanks for investing in me, you won’t regret it!
[STRATEGY] Sobs incoherently

> CLASS - ARCHEOLOGY 3
You’ve learned about what ruins are, the theories we have behind ancients, the history of ruins, how to bargain with others to gain companions and safe travel. Mizu claims the third class seems to be the most important, it’s about the designs of dungeons and their most dangerous elements, TRAPS.

She once again talks about the basics, pitfalls, spikes, arrows, and generic traps. These are all something she calls LABELLED TRAPS. Before most of them, if you pay attention there is usually RUNESCRIPT that directly indicates there is danger. The RUNESCRIPT sometimes can be deciphered and will tell you what the trap is, other times it tells you how to disarm it. On these simple traps the disarming instructions are almost always accurate. These are normal, however, the deeper you go, the harder it is to trust these signs. They ALWAYS indicate either the contents of a room, or that a trap is near, sometimes both. She tells you things to look out for, spots to be wary of, potentially hidden signs due to terrain and the works. She then describes two of the deadliest traps she’s ever witnessed. She pulls out some diagrams and pastes them to the wall.

Mizu: The first is a seemingly innocuous orb.
Mizu: If you see one, do not get close to it without some HEAVY armor.
Mizu: For the sake of reality, these are basically dead ends.
Mizu: The devices are simple. On the surface are many small shards of SHRAPNEL that are vibrating
Mizu: It might look to the keen eyed of you like a ball of squirming worms.
Mizu: Get too close and the shards eject with a velocity similar to an arrow and a similar piercing power
Mizu: But it gets worse, the pieces are all vibrating, so the pieces in you hurt you even more.
Mizu: And after a few moments if you haven’t left it’s range, the SHARDS are pulled back, hurting you even more.
Mizu: I lost a few kin that day, consider this my biggest warning, your lives are more important than treasure.

There’s a pause at that, you know there were a few students in the room who were still thinking of the treasure, but they grow silent at hearing the distinct possibility of death being brought up again. She continues.

Mizu: The second, is easier to spot in some cases, harder in others.
Mizu: Does anyone know what a LASER is?

You raise your hand at that.

Mizu: Makes sense the RUNESCRIPTER would know, please enlighten the class as to what one is.
You: Uh, imagine a beam of light
You: Now imagine it’s concentrated so heavily that it could cut like a knife
You: Though it requires massive power consumption to work properly.
Mizu: Okay, now imagine around 12 of these coming at you slowly
Mizu: Not a big problem right?
Mizu: Well what if the door behind you closed.
Mizu: You’d have to contort yourself, but if it touched you,
Mizu: the resistance of a knife isnt there, it would go right through you.
Mizu: And then there’s the invisible variants, I’ve only heard rumors,
Mizu: but the telltale sign one is near is a SHARP WINDY SOUND
Mizu: I theorize its compressed air, but have never seen one with my own eyes.
Mizu: I repeat, this is serious, go too deep and you could get lost or even die.

Mizu then goes on to list the occasional monster that lives in the dungeon, for the most part they are UNIQUE CREATURES. Sometimes it’s something you could find on a plate, other times they’re these pure white monstrocities, some have been dyed red by the blood of the ones it’s slaughtered. She tosses out a tooth soaked in the blood of something, as if her words weren’t enough. You’re able to keep yourself collected, you expected as much, but others in the class are looking sick and leave. Eventually you’re the only one left in the class.

Mizu: You’re sticking through it? You know it’s going to be hard right?
You: No path worth walking has ever been EASY, has it?
Mizu: That’s true.
Mizu: You’re probably going to become one of the most qualified ARCHAEOLOGISTS if you ever pursue the path for real
Mizu: You could probably create tools to prevent harm from most of these traps
You: I’m already thinking of a few solutions, but need many iterations to come to something that works.
Mizu: If you can come up with anything to make archeology easier I’d appreciate it.
Mizu: I know some kin who’d pay, so keep me in mind when you do.
Mizu: I’ve retired for the most part, hence the teaching job, but I know a few kin with some fur in the game.

You thank Mizu as you finish the class, it was enlightening and you feel your senses SHARPEN ever so slightly.

Your PERCEPTION skill has increased to RANK 2(+1)
- Due to your specific training you now have a bonus +1 to detecting TRAPS and STRANGE THINGS in RUINS
You’ve completed the ARCHEOLOGY COURSE!
You’ve gained MIZU as a CONTACT at rank 1
- Mizu is your contact for ARCHAEOLOGISTS and can get you information related to it
- Mizu has left you with a standing request for anything that can make ARCHEOLOGY easier.

> EVENT - MIND AND BODY DOJO III
You’ve had some gains this year due to your training, there was no duel scheduled this year as you won your last duel. LOU XIN is waiting for you to MASTER the CLAW before providing you with a decent CHALLENGE. She worries the other DOJOS will try to pull something, so she wants you in tip-top shape. You instead spar with her and other members of your DOJO.

Your CLAW skill has improved to rank 5
- You have the feeling getting from 5 to 6 will be harder then the others
- But there is no SOFT CAP blocking your way
Your TENACITY stat has improved to RANK 2
- You have the feeling that it will take twice as long to improve from rank 2 to 3 and so on
Your body is becoming firmer and more muscular, especially in your LEGS and THIGHS
- you think you could take a proper beating and still maintain coherency throughout it.

LOU XIN says that if you want to continue to improve at this pace and are willing to pay an extra 180 SHINIES a year, she can teach you more intensely. But you will gain a guaranteed 3 stress at this point [end of TP 4] every year from the extremely rigorous training.

> EVENT - ANIMAL FRIEND
You’re heading home one day when you see a small MEOWRET in a box. It’s cold and alone with a sign that says FREE next to it. You examine the creature more closely. It’s got features similar to a FERRET, being small and rather lanky with CAT-LIKE ears, two tails, and four paws. It looks like it hasn't eaten in days but its giving you the cutest expression it could possibly muster. You could take it home with you and keep it as a pet. Or give it to another kin, you’re sure PON or NOODLE wouldn’t mind a small animal friend to take care of, and it could add some livelihood to the house. On the other hand you could also bring it to the OUTREACH SHELTER, they take care of small animals like this.

[KNOWLEDGE] Oh, these things are pets you normally find, normally they eat small rodents that get into farms
[KNOWLEDGE] Or into houses or pantries, typically they’re GOOD OMENS
[KNOWLEDGE] The only problem is they require a lot of time spent giving them attention or they could get depressed
[KNOWLEDGE] They also squeak and are pretty fast, meant to be outdoor and indoor pets
[KNOWLEDGE] Oh and like to hang off your shoulder or hat, close contact is just something they really like
[CREATIVITY] It’s so cute!
[ATHLETICISM] For starving it looks pretty strong for a little guy
[KNOWLEDGE] Actually all of the species are hermaphrodites, no males or females, though I guess you could call them whatever.
[???] Its… So… PRECIOUS!!!! <3 <3 <3
[CHARISMA] You’re way cuter then that thing
[PRIDE] I agree, none are cuter than we!
[UN LOGIC] We don’t really *need* a pet… We have William and Ignis for that!
[SEVERAL STATS] Bap [UN LOGIC] on the metaphysical head

AUTHORS NOTE: Taking care of a pet requires either one time point a year dedicated to it, or a background task slot alloted to it. Each update you have any pets there is a 50% chance nothing happens, a 30% chance of losing 1 stress or gaining 1 FUN POINT if you are at 0 stress, a 15% chance of gaining STRESS from pet based shenanigans, and a 5% chance of a SPECIAL EVENT occurring. You don’t get the bonus if someone else is taking care of the animal. Your lifestyle expenses will also increase to cover the costs of raising the creature.

If you do adopt the animal friend, you better pick a name for them, or someone else will! Oh, and one last thing, if the pet dies you’re going to take a large amount of STRESS depending on how long you’ve been with it.

>Adop
YES
You relieve stress so easily with just one pet
For some reason, you have the urge to call it Izzie the Reaper
If you don't want to keep them, do not give them to the shelter. They're basically a glorified euthanasia center.

-1 TP Use a Favor from Ignis to help you start your business with Royal contacts
-1 TP Take a negotiation class to show you're serious about future business courses.

IDEA: we'll work on inventing after next year begins and we see what progress and inventions was made in the research task. afterwards, we'll spend a timepoint to make that breathing apparatus to perfect it in time to visit Dopus. (I'll think up some invention ideas until then

Still want to give our library ticket to Pawn as a peace offering. Maybe once we bond with him, he'll someday teach us microscripting.

I'm thinking we can form a business with Pon and use our runescripting mainly to invent things to enhance the quality of food with Pon. But we'll cross that bridge after classes as UN LOGIC recommended, so next year we'll negotiate with food vendors, or any other business. We'll need negotiation class first before we do that.

I wouldn't recommend hunting class, we're already getting training from the dojo, we can always sign paperwork to leave the worldplate without a hunters license, and we have Pon, Noodle, and maybe Glide to protect us with their knowledge of monsters. (plus library memorization can help us learn hunting skills if there are some hunting books)
------------------------

TIME POINTS

- TACTICS CLASS (with a tutor) TAKE THE CLASS WITH HOOK so she can be prepared for the challenge: Can we give Strategy some love? He's suffering from depression. To make up for it, The tutor according to >>1003877 gives a 1x to 4x bonus to efficiency bonus, so we should use that tutor since we've been neglecting it since childhood when we took that aptitude test... wow, that was many many years ago. Plus we'll need strategy when shit starts hitting the fans with Canus trying to stop us from teaching... and black lotus

- our yearly MEDITATION quota needs to be filled, and will help reduce stress. Lets work on our mind palace. Any will do... maybe ANGER’S DOGHOUSE? (Anger will probably be angry with us when he finds out it's a doghouse we're building as a place for him. Hopefully he won't become the ANGRIEST DOG IN THE WORLDPLATE and reach a state of rigor mortis.

-----------------------

GOAL: Find a way to breathe to take Nub's offer to visit Dopus
GOAL: Find a BOYFRIEND/GIRLFRIEND (begins at year 16)

------------------
Pet? I don't know... I'll let the others decide or figure out later. But call it RHODIE if we do... something about that name seems familiar...

Bring it to the outreach center and do your good deed for the day.
Take the Hunter class now. We can finish up one more class this year and then we'll be very busy making contacts and starting up businesses. Say goodbye to our free time...
Negotiations can wait, I want to do at least one ourselves before going to Ignis or William about it.
The ticket is... well, we could certainly use that as a bargaining tool, since we have other, unique means of utilizing the library. How about offering to sell it to Pawn for a discount, half price or more? Use the excuse that you can get plenty more time due to your teaching job.
Begin the intensive training with Lou Xin, and ensure you have a means of stress reduction.

Spend the last of our break time with Ignis (not a date, since we are not 16 yet, just hang out) he has helped us so much with stuff, that he deserves some attention. Maybe we can ask him for charisma advice?

Tactics class with tutor. We can scope out Hook's competition that way too.

Dunno if we can be responsible for the li'l guy... I ultimately have no clue what we should do, so I abstain from voting on this topic.

> GOALS
NEW GOAL: PAY OFF YOUR DEBT
NEW GOAL: START A RUNESCRIPTING FIRM/COMPANY/GUILD/WHATEVER (< Whichever of these can potentially be folded into an official branch of the crown.)
May as well make it all official.

> FREE TIME
More GUILE TRAINING WITH RIICHI for [TS 5]. I want to reach Rank 5 by the end of the year (though we can easily abort finishing that next chunk if we think Chi needs to HECKING RELAX before she takes the TEACHING CHALLENGE, paying to finish our training with Riichi later at home if we must).

For [TS 6], since we won't have time to do both during the next chunk of time (what with the TP needed for the teaching challenge), let's SHORE UP OUR PREPARATIONS FOR TEACHING. We don't want to stumble when we make our educational debut if we can help it. Set up a SYLLABUS AND CLASS EXPECTATIONS that you can spend the entire first session of class explaining; EXPAND THE SUBJECT TO THREE COURSES, appending a class onto the beginning that focuses on teaching everyone the basics of Manual decoding with a uniform (and simple (likely TRIGGER)) Black Manual - they won't be able to make much with a single rune no matter what it is, so this is fine - then moving on to other Black Manuals if a student completes it early, then the second course is when you introduce them to other syntaxes, with the intent to learn them all six main ones (with passing mention to how we (Tengu) have yet to unlock the secrets of Gold and Prismatic Syntax), with the last course being mainly similar to Shimon's, but without the out-of-hand dismissal of logic gates; SCOUT OUT POTENTIAL STAFF/TEACHER'S ASSISTANTS, because goddess knows running (and taking) this class alone may get overwhelming; WORK OUT A DISCIPLINARY PROCESS for the inevitable problem students you're going to be sent; and MAKE SURE YOU'RE STOCKED WITH THE MATERIALS YOU NEED, even making the manuals yourself if you have to.
Ask WILLIAM & IGNIS for help with this if you have to (regarding the materials and staff search - the lesson plans and procedures are all you).

We can totally take HUNTER II as our teacher's class for the year next year; let's not sweat it.

>increase intensity of training?
Maybe when we have a better way of reducing stress, but for now, my answer is no thank you.

>adopt Meowret?
I don’t think we should, I’d be worried for the Meowret‘s safety. I know it’s only a 15% chance for a pet related shenanigan to happen, but since the Meowret would spend most of its time in our room, it could be dangerous during those shenanigans!

Our room is also our lab where we experiment with Runes. If the Meowret bumps into something or knocks something over or sits on something we’re currently working on, it might activate a Rune and set itself on fire or something! I’d feel terrible if it ends up getting hurt or killed by some Rune related accident in our room!

Of course, I don’t want to leave it here or take it to the Outreach Shelter, so I think we should bring it home and let Pon or Noodle have it.

>pet
Uh... I don't know. How likely is it to break some of our stuff? Magitech inventions are expensive. If we can keep it out of our fragiles, then sure. Everyone should own a pet at least once, it's a good learning experience! After the gambling background task ends we can use that slot for the pet.

>[???] Its… So… PRECIOUS!!!! <3 <3 <3
Hmmm... Maternal Instinct? Love? Hormones? If Anger can be a stat, then I don't see why Love can't be one.

>guile stuff, soft cap requirements
Why only intimidation and deception? What about stealth and lie detection? I wonder if Noodle has learned much about stealth, maybe we can ask her for advice.

>goals

Befriend Pawn, or at least get a Contact relationship with him

>UNDERSTANDING's task
Find a compound rune or special runescripting skill.

>time points

Bond with William. Ask how his goals are going, and if he has decided how he's going to build Karma. It should be obvious what you're doing, by now, and it seems like Marth is taking a path of violence. Nothing wrong with that really, so long as she stays true to herself.

New goals: Business time! And while we’re at it, goal: get an edge over the human kingdom. Probably some invention of runescripting you’ve solved and they haven’t! Publicly anyway.

I agree with others, Chi's household is probably not the best for a pet.
Might wanna tell our friends in case they want a go at it, though.

Adopt the meowret and take care of it as a background task. Yes to the enhanced training.

Oh yeah I'll vote yes for the intensified dojo training as well. Stress can be managed while being productive, thanks to meditation, the mind campus project, and book memorization.

AUTHORS NOTE: You can only have 3 BG tasks going on so if you adopt the pet you'll need to drop a BG task since you're full, or spend at least 1 tp a year with them, so keep that in mind.

Pet: I don't know if its as great for us... but Pon could use a mascot!

Go for the intense training.

I'm against a pet at this time, though I'm not against asking if our roomies want it before taking it to the outreach folks.

The pay off debt goal suggested is reasonable.

I think we should put aside a time slot for Ignis. That's all he really wants despite doing so much for us. We should show him that we appreciate him.

I also think we should meditate. We recently had another weird migraine, that usually means we need to do something mentally.

If we do the negotiation class this update, id say do it with a TA instead of a tutor.

I want to save our tutor money for Tactics class as our last class next time (if we do that class after this update as one of our final time points. Otherwise we'll save the 2000 for ignis). Strategy and Guile works well together, so raising strat up as much as we can with the tutor will be very helpful

Why do I feel like we could become Chun Li if we keep training like this? We might be able to emulate some of her moves and start kicking really fast!

>Pet
I agree with everyone saying that it'd be too dangerous for us to keep it. For now, let's bring it home and see if one of our friends wants to adopt it.

> NO PET
You’re concerned about adopting this poor fellow, you’re always so busy and you handle volatile materials frequently that you’d be worried of it HURTING ITSELF. You think it would take you SEVERAL TP to train the thing, maybe less because you are GOOD AT TEACHING. But you feel bad for it and think it would be cute if PON had a mascot, so you bring it home and talk with your friends. It slinks around you curling around your arm and neck eventually settling on your hat. It’s a cute little creature. After some discussion at home PON decides to adopt it with IGNIS’S blessing, so long as it’s TRAINED PROPERLY. PON decides to name the creature DORA. It squeaks excitedly and seems to enjoy it’s new home. You keep your door closed for the most part while it’s being trained just so it doesn’t get hurt by your inventions.

> NEW GOALS AND BG TASKS
You decide to set yourself a new goal, PAY OFF YOUR DEBT EARLY. You were already planning on paying it off, but setting a personal goal to do it faster will put a bit of a fire under your tail-feathers. Perhaps the emotional reward will make it feel better.

Your torn between what to do for your second goal, but feel like the general idea should be STARTING YOUR RUNESCRIPTING BUSINESS. You’re not sure if it will take the form of a GUILD, or a COMPANY, you think that it’s important. You’re also completely fine with whatever you make being eventually folded into an official branch of the crown. You’re not in it for the money at this point, but for the betterment of your kin, and as far as you know, the royalty here hasn’t been as corrupted as countries have in your past life. This might have to do with them being a FLEDGLING NATION, but it gives you HOPE.

You also don’t reach a consensus on intensifying your training. You’re at a 2-1 vote mentally towards pros and cons for it, so you decide to hold off for now, but maybe that’ll change in a few TP. And as for the TICKET and PAWN, you’re torn between SELLING it to him and GIVING it to him. You’re not sure which approach would lead to a more favorable outcome and you’re floundering on it, it’s a bit of INDECISION that’s bothering you. You really need to put your foot down on this and decide, so you consult your STATS and others. No one else knows about your PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY, but they know about your LIBRARY VISITS, so when you say you have a ticket on offer, wanting to give it to PAWN, they suggest either a trade, or offer it to him in good faith to have him join the RUNESCRIPTERS.

[CHARISMA] I don’t think he’ll join us until we get a strong BOND with him
[CHARISMA] He seems to care about the plate as well,
[CHARISMA] maybe a gesture that shows we also care about the plate to him will move him.

You’re not sure what PAWN is going to be doing next year, but he will be graduating. You assume something MAGITECH RELATED, probably in the city. You might not have a shot of BONDING with him if you don’t act soon though.

> FREE TIME - IGNIS
You dedicate a significant chunk of time to IGNIS. He’s been a part of your life for a while now, hes been supporting you, offering loans, and being what would generally amount to ONE OF YOUR PILLARS OF SUPPORT, both emotionally and realistically. The two of you spend some time flying throughout the skies, just sort of drifting, enjoying yourselves some days. Others you mess around and try to make some less serious RUNESCRIPTING INVENTIONS, one day IGNIS makes a FARTING DEVICE that makes it sound like you shit your pants when you sit on it. He laughs and laughs and eventually you laugh too whilst everyone present generally also got in the fun times. He confides in you his concerns for the plate some times, he’s deeply worried about the state of things, coming from a more MILITARISTIC PRIOR LIFE gives him a unique perspective.

Ignis: We’re alright in the interim, but some things truly worry me.
Ignis: Did you know that there are some plates that are CRUMBLING faster than others?
Ignis: This isn’t happening on colonized plates, but some of the outer plates with MONSTERS are starting to shrink
Ignis: One has even VANISHED, leaving no TUNNEL.
You: That’s really strange, and with how restricted we are I doubt we can actually figure out the cause
Ignis: That’s what worries me. What if it happens to us, what if it happens outside of CANUS
Ignis: It’d be great if we had one of those PLATE DETECTING DEVICES, but that’s a distant dream at best.
You: SIGH, I wonder if there’s something we missed, a hidden piece only WING-KIN could get to
Ignis: No one’s seen the true bottom of the plate, it’s possible, they just get TELEPORTED when they get too far down
Ignis: There’s also deep underground caverns, but the easily accessible ones are already mapped.
Ignis: I just worry about escalation, if the HUMANS are doing this, doesen’t that mean they’re hiding POWERFUL WEAPONS?
You: The bigger stick can enforce things the way they want after all
Ignis: We don’t have a big enough stick, but that just leads to harder escalations
Ignis: Why can’t things be simple like with CANUS and DOPUS, somewhat reasonable regional relations
You: And making the biggest stick doesn’t guarantee it wont get used without the creator’s consent
You: It happened in my old world, I’m sure it will happen again.
Ignis: I just have a bad feeling is all, I have a big sense of uhh I guess its NATIONALISM
Ignis: A holdover from that other life.
Ignis: I’m worried our way of life will be overwritten like CANUS is, or that it will happen to DOPUS.
Ignis: If we can come up with water breathing devices for the DOPUS expedition, why can’t the HUMANS?
Ignis: What reasons are they not pushing harder on our plates, it’s things like this that keep me up at night.
You: Whose to say they haven’t? I’d bet a large amount of SHINIES that they have.
Ignis: And yet they don't engage in trade with them, this isn’t speculation mind you, this is hard facts
Ignis: You know we’re in negotiation with them? A mutual research agreement and trade?
Ignis: But there’s heavy push-back from the HUMANS and CANUS, they might intentionally sabotage it.
Ignis: And for what? To keep us from progressing? Why?

There it is, that feeling again, it’s like seeing a shadow at the periphery of your vision. You can almost make out what it is, but the moment you truly look it’s gone, as if it never was there. You can tell IGNIS is in a similar position. Your [UNDERSTANDING] is straining itself, but you’re drawing a blank. There’s more talks, a few debates and even a single argument with IGNIS over something kind of stupid. He’s stressed over many things and is trying to juggle what he can. From your perspective it seems he’s genuinely concerned with the progress of your people, but knows that working with you on MAGITECH and it’s processes will be his best way to impact the kin in a significant way. Eventually he brings up something that’s been bothering him.

Ignis: Hey Chi, can we talk?
You: Sure, what’s up Iggy?
Ignis: Can I be in charge of NEGOTIATIONS for our business.
Ignis: I know you’ve been talking about taking NEGOTIATION classes so you can do a better job
Ignis: But this is what I’ve been training myself for.
Ignis: I- I trust you a lot, but I want you to trust me on this
Ignis: That I could do a good job on it
You: I was thinking about asking you for a FAVOR for you to do it
You: But I held off because I wasn’t sure if it was time for us to do it yet.
You: Not because of the financial, but I guess my STATS told me to wait?
Ignis: STATS?
You: Uhhh, mind, my thoughts, sorry, there’s a lot in here, imagine a bunch of voices
You: Not in a crazy way or anything!
You: Uh you know how you have an internal monologue going sometimes
Ignis: Yeah, sure, everyone does.
You: It’s like that, only it perks up in different situations
Ignis: Sounds convenient, I only have the ONE VOICE
Ignis: And it’s mostly just CHARISMATIC
Ignis: Though sometimes I hear small inklings of LOGIC which used to be my worst subject and TACTICS
Ignis: Honestly if it wasn’t for you I probably wouldn’t have figured out RUNESCRIPTING
Ignis: but now I know it like the back of my mycellium. Uh, hand.
Ignis: But uh, think on it would you, I’d appreciate being given the opportunity to flex my skills.

Ignis and you spend the remainder of your time together visiting various diners, you see him perform his SINGING, he’s got quite a beautiful voice and can be both deep and light in tone depending on the situation. It turns out he does know A LOT of kin, most kin you come across in these places really. He’s 17 right now, almost 18. You forget that he’s 2 years older than you sometimes. You ask him for some tips on breaking through your CHARISMA DEADLOCK, he says it’s not too hard, that if you take the SINGING class he’d be willing to act as a PERSONAL TUTOR for FREE to help you break through in one go, or you could spend another TIME POINT or TWO with him to get it done outside of a class. You get the feeling he could help you with PURSUASION as well, but that he wants to show you his skills to prove his competence first. You get the feeling he would be A LITTLE UPSET if you used him to learn PURSUASION and didn’t at least let him help or attempt a negotiation on his own.

IGNIS has issued you a REQUEST, [LEAN ON ME] there is no time limit
- This REQUEST fails if you NEGOTIATE for your business without allowing IGNIS to attempt on his own
Your INTUITION warns you that rejecting this offer will cause IGNIS’S TRUST in you to drop significantly
IGNIS is willing to act as your PERSONAL TUTOR for SINGING to give you CHARM at RANK 3

> FREE TIME - MEDITATION
You were torn between what you wanted to do this [TP] but go with MEDITATION for now. You dont use the MIND AND BODY technique for this one, wanting to see just how STRONG your MEDITATION is after ranking up. You decide to be a bit cheeky and establish what you’re lovingly calling [ANGER’S DOGHOUSE] it’s a slightly large doghouse with a nice open roof and open entryway. You make a little grass path on top of the wood or whatever ethereal material it’s made out of to give it a sort of Hobbit-house look. It takes you about half of your meditation time to make this, you imagine this to be a [RANK 1] building. You get the feeling that you can easily expand it later unlike the MIND DORMS for some reason. You also manifest a few decorations when you feel a slight warping occur, and with a POP you hear a [STAT] speak to you.

[ANGER] Did you seriously fucking build me a goddess damned doghouse
[ANGER] WAIT, I’M A DOG NOW
[ANGER] ARF WHAT IS THIS DOGSHIT
[ANGER] I’m only kidding I was already going to use this form
[ANGER] I Guess I should thank you for building my place first but you made it a fucking doghouse
You: Uhhhh
[ANGER] Fine, fine. Thanks “MASTER” Is that how you get your sick kicks, don’t adopt a real pet so you adopt your SIN?
[ANGER] Whatever, I have a place now. At least this means you like me more than PRIDE.
You: So like, ummm, HI I guess?
[ANGER] Yeah, hi. Don’t expect much from me, I’m fairly weak and doubt I’ll ever be important to you.
[ANGER] At least now I have a place to sleep, but can I get like a cushion or something

You will a cushion into the doghouse, she heads in and lies down.

[ANGER] I’ll go bother [UNDERSTANDING] later, you can just ignore me
[ANGER] I want to help you in the long run anyway, so I’ll just stay out of the way

Seeing as how finishing a room for a STAT appears to make them manifest you spend the rest of your time building a sort of QUAD, a meeting area, it’s really bare, some tables, a big tree in the center and some flowers. It’s cozy, kind of the CAMPUS SQUARE as you’re calling it. You’ll probably add to it more and more as time goes on but you get an idea for something. For a CAMPUS GATE. You’re not sure WHY you want one, but you slap down a rudimentary one anyway in front of the MIST. The Gate is a simple arch made of stone of a similar color to that of your DORM. You think about making a FLAG of some kind to represent your mind but wonder if that’s too PRIDEFUL or SELF ABSORBED. You turn to the mist as your time here draws to a close, It’s fluctuating, but attempts to enter it are met with you being pushed outside of it. You suppose you’ll have to keep waiting to find out what the deal is.

You’ve provided housing to your ANGER
- Despite it’s complaining, it seems quite pleased with the arrangement
- Your ANGER is too weak to provide any bonuses
- Your ANGER says it will try not to be a BURDEN
You’ve created a CAMPUS GATE and GATHERING AREA
- Your STATS will occasionally congregate in this spot
- You’re not sure if this will have any effect in the future
Your MIGRAINES are a problem, and would have given you [1 STRESS], but your MEDITATION removes [3 STRESS] instead.

> SOMETHING STIRS IN YOUR MIND
It’s late at night when you get an intense flicker of pain, a migraine like before. Instead of being constant it’s throughout the night, it interrupts your sleep and is annoying as all heaven. You later find out that something similar happened to WILLIAM and IGNIS. It’s suspicious, your [UNDERSTANDING] Says that maybe you are [LINKED] by something that is causing this pain. Only time will tell what exactly it is that is happening. The GEARS ARE TURNING in your mind, not only do you feel something coming in what is quite possibly the other INNATE SKILL, but it’s as if a fundamental REVELATION is coming to you as well, but you’re just missing that last damn piece and you’re not sure what it even is really. Is it related to the WORLD PLATES, is it related to the HUMANS, is it related to KARMA, you’re not sure, but you feel like it will provide a small but impactive PUSH to you in the near future. For some reason in this moment you think of two things, NUBS, and your world plate TENGU. You dismiss the thought a moment later as it fleets away from your memory, which it by all rights and purposes shouldn't given your impeccable memory.

Speaking of memories, you’re nearly at the end of SABA’S just a few more TP and it’s done. You’re not sure if there’s anything left to learn as you’ve already absorbed all of his KNOWLEDGE and surpassed his EIDETIC MEMORY gaining PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY. You suppose the other LOGIC skill you haven’t earned yet, VISUAL CALCULUS would be a good thing to gain, there’s also that LOGIC SOFT CAP you still have to break, but maybe you’ll get something that SURPRISES YOU in the final moments, a gleaning of INSIGHT perhaps.

Yeah, we'll take Ignis up on having him be our negotiator... And after hearing Ignis talk so much about negotiating, I don't think I want to take the negotiation class anymore and just have Ignis handle negotiations to make him feel important. Plus I don't want him to feel upset if he finds out we take a negotiation class. So I'll be against taking a negotiation class. He'll handle that weak part about us so we can focus on other things. That's what the BONDS are for after all. We can just learn to sing from him and get our charisma to CHARM.

and give Pawn the ticket for free to help build bridges.

IMPORTANT:
STRATEGY is still at LEVEL ONE, and this is probably our LAST CHANCE to level him up easily before the academy arc is over. Poor guy has been at level one since year 5, so I propose for his tenth birthday, we take a TACTICS CLASS with a TUTOR. Tutor gives a 1x to 4x bonus in efficiency, so maybe we might get lucky and have that level up more than one level to make up for neglecting him? I think he deserves it for waiting 10 long years to be given attention.

Strategy I feel will be very helpful with planning things especially when Canus and the Black Lotus starts becoming more of a problem. Plus, Strategy was very helpful as a tagteam partner with GUILE when against Shimon with that pincer strat during planning >>1006145 though I think he could have been better if he was stronger. Imagine what it could do if it was stronger. soo

TIMEPOINT 1: TACTICS CLASS WITH A TUTOR (take it with Hook maybe)

TIMEPOINT 2: REST WITH GRADUATION PARTIES with our friends, Chi deserves this after completing the academy, plus it'll be fun to hang out with friends and reminisce the good times we had. These moments with friends are always heartwarming.

or ENERGY THEORY CLASS for timepoint 2 with Ignolia

but my main choice is graduation party. we can't have a graduation without one.

------------------

Our background research projects are almost done. After that is done and we see what inventions chi and the runscripters came up with, then we'll spend a timepoint to perfect them.

That said, for now, I propose we all come up with wacky invention ideas and runes for breathing underwater they came up with for the background resarch. shape runes with wood helps with water breathing if I remember. I'll come up with some ideas later.

> WHAT ARE WE READING?
If nothing else, the first book we should be analyzing is THE BOOK OF ORDERS (for that sweet GUILE and KNOWLEDGE OF OUR LIKELY ENEMIES). (Although I was sorely tempted to suggest THE FANTASTIC ADVENTURES OF KAMAL LIN: OMNIBUS - that 8-TP monster of a book - for both the random stat gains (including almost certainly GUILE at some point) and the fact that it's almost certainly where PAWN got MICROSCRIPTING from.)

> FREE TIME
This may be our last chance to IMPROVE OUR LESSON PLAN before we make our teaching debut. This is where you incorporate some concepts from SABA'S world that are actually kind of useful, such as making a SYLLABUS for each class and dedicating the first session of class to going over it, including CLASS EXPECTATIONS, SCHEDULING, GRADING AND DISCIPLINARY METRICS, and COMPLIMENTARY COURSE RECOMMENDATIONS (such as MANA THEORY, ENGINEERING, and ONE OF SEVERAL CRAFTS CLASSES). Draw up a THIRD CLASS that goes before the first two, that goes over the basics of decoding a manual, with everyone starting with the same black one (likely [TRIGGER] - it's not like they can do much with a single rune no matter what it is, anyway), while moving on to other black manuals if they finish early, and RETOOL THE SECOND CLASS to be about learning your students all six main syntaxes (with passing mention to how GOLD and PRISMATIC syntax are beyond our knowledge for now). The LAST CLASS is mostly unchanged, except for dropping the outright dismissal of LOGIC GATES. Maybe ASK SOME FAVORS to ensure that you HAVE THE REQUIRED MANUALS AND OTHER MATERIALS for this class structure ready, along with potential TEACHER'S ASSISTANTS we can hire.

The TEACHING CHALLENGE may happen on [TS 8] this year, but if it's not - that is, if it's actually [TS 1] next year - then let's spend the last slot of this year ensuring we aren't going into this challenge STRESSED - for specifics, let's do FOCUSED MEDITATION: VISUAL CALCULUS. I want to knock out the last skill we've yet to inherit from SABA before we're done absorbing him, especially since it might have been a critical part of his ability to use [UNDERSTANDING] in tandem with his INVENTION skill.

> WORLD-BUILDING
(Speaking of - making a WORLD-ESTABLISHMENT suggestion to propose incorporating PICTOGRAM CHARACTERS into CANON's writing system, on top of the PHONETIC LETTERING borrowed from ENGLISH; I can't imagine CALLIGRAPHY even emerging as a viable style, otherwise.)

Haha, and who says we don't have time for pets? Oh wait, me, I did. Well, set Ignis to the task of negotiation! I say he does two, we do one (the food vendors?) just for practice. And learning to sing with Ignis sounds like a Disney princess moment, do it.
Speaking of housing pride, since you do need to manage that too. You should give it a humble abode. Maybe an office under the stairs.
Well, you still didn't take the hunter class. So take the hunter class! Seriously! Just get it done with! Bookend your education, I guess!

In the meantime, ponder what your first official inventions as a business will be. For something that could benefit archaeology, how about a life decoy? A deployable object that will mimic the signs of life that commonly serve as trap triggers (body heat, humanoid weight, movement and breathing) and possibly prematurely trigger traps, letting adventurers know where it is and possibly get by while the trap is on cooldown, or study its effects. The royals could also use these to create false troop movements for anyone that might be scouting the worldplate out using remote sensing technology. And the hunters... well, they can use different shapes of decoys as bait!
You'd need a run that can make something heavier, a shape rune could project breath and/or a humanoid silhouette, the warmth rune would simulate temperature. Lastly, you could optionally add a method of self propulsion or just design it to be thrown at a spot and unfold/project itself there. Perhaps you could use that wingkin's method of an air skirt, like a hovercraft. The skirt would probably need rubber in order to build.

Get TACTICALLY TUTORED! Probably gonna need that if you ever go into the ruins, you might not be good enough to direct tactics, but at least you'll be able to understand them.
>TimePoint 2
I think one of our timepoints is being used by the teaching initiation, but if we still have another then...
Meditate on VISUAL CALCULUS. This seems like a good practical skill to have in ruins as it may help you deduce if there's a trap or how a trap works if you can't decipher it with runes. Also goes hand-in-hand with strategy, as you could tell how soon something's gonna go somewhere, and where it'll go simply by calculating it's trajectory, so this plus strategy may improve your dodging capabilities.

I feel like an office might be troublesome, as it promotes boasting to work partners and such, so maybe make it a cozy homely place, as I feel pride is useful if we keep the prode for ourselves, but don't spread it around by boasting and all that, simply knowing that we're competent is enough, and we don't need to let others know.
A personal pride rather than a boastful one.

Yeah, we should let Ignis handle negotiations, he’s going to be way better at it than us.

And take him up on his offer to teach us singing for free.

We should try and make something for Pride. It’ll help us control our boasting so that we don’t start doing that during the classes we’ll be teaching.

Wow! That could cancel out the 3 stress from the intense training with Lou Xin!

I say we should start the intense training! This might be the final push we need to finish out Basic Mastery Goal!

>>Ignis's Plate worries
Wow. A lot of information to unpack here. That point about the uninhabited plates disintegrating faster, I wonder if theres something about not having kin on a plate or having a lot of monsters on a plate that makes it deteriorate faster?
And about the Humans...Ive been thinking, you know that theory the group came up with about how runecrafted items degrade, and how there might be a rune keeping the plates floating somewhere and thats why they're crumbling? The Humans have been using runecrafting a lot longer, what if they had the same theory, and thats why they want to discourage others from developing runecrafting? Maybe they think theres a finite amount of mana or whatever , and runecrafting uses it up faster. It'd be pretty hypocritical of them to keep using it themselves in that case, but that'd e pretty in line with what we know of humanity still. Also, if Monsters use up a lot of mana, it'd make sense why their cores contain so much and why the plates with only a lot of monsters would crumble faster.
Alternately, maybe the Human's super aggressive trading has less to do with greed for currency, and more with them wanting the Shinies themselves, like, as an object? Maybe they want them for some other reason.
Hey, did we ever look at Shinies with the Mana Goggles? Where exactly do the things come from anyway?

>>Let Ignis negotiate
Thats a big yes, though if he coould let Chi help if he ever makes a deal with the Hunters it would be nice, seeing as half of CHi's family are Hunters.

>>Time Point 2

Since we are nearing completion of the breathing apparatus research task, I’m Trying to figure out the breathing apparatus invention.

So overall, I’m thinking as far as materials go we will need:
-WOOD
- METAL (since metal can be the only one that stores energy)
-TUBES
-SOIL (only if we do the green absorption rune)
-GLASS (only if we do the green absorption rune)
-GLASS BULB (only if we don't do the green absorption rune)
(though EARTH might not be needed if we absorb something like light with a yellow absorption rune or regular energy with a white absorption rune, plus it could cause weight issues if we filled a tank with soil, mainly those as materials to make a rebreather or oxygen tank of some sort.)

Then, for runes, we’ll need
- ABSORPTION (either green, yellow, or white)
- STORAGE
- TRIGGER (BLUE SENSOR and INTENSITY),
- SHAPE (WOOD for AIR)
- LIGHT (only if we don't use green absorption)

Now it would be easy to just have the absorption absorb water for energy, but if we mass produce these, this could drain the water of Dopus which we don’t want to do. That is what the storage is for, to take energy from outside, store it, and the activate the air when we’re under water with the shape rune.

Here’s what I’m thinking how we’ll do it: we’ll make an enclosed metal container and connect some wood inside it, and maybe some soil in another compartment of the container if we decide to use the green absorption rune.

Then, We’ll put a GREEN ABSORPTION RUNE inside the compartment that contains soil so it can absorb earth (The glass is to show us how much soil is inside left before we have to refill it), or a yellow or white absorption rune outside of the container to absorb energy from the light or natural energy outside.

We then link whatever color ABSORPTION RUNE to a STORAGE RUNE inside or outside of the container to keep the energy stored for when we need it later.

Afterwards, link the STORAGE RUNE to a BLUE COMPOUND SENSOR RUNE so that when it detects water, it will activate the storage rune and give energy, and an INTENSITY slider so we can control how much air we’ll get, and energy we’ll use (unless intensity and sensor doesn’t count as one rune, in which case, forget intensity). Connect the BLUE SENSOR RUNE to a GLASS BULB (maybe if we don’t use a green absorption rune since we’ll see how much soil is left) with a LIGHT RUNE So that we can get an idea of how much energy is left before we have to surface for air before the tank runs out of air. If the light starts dimming, we’ll need to surface for air and more energy before it runs out. Then, have that BLUE SENSOR RUNE also connect to the SHAPE RUNE on the wood inside the container that we inscribed on so it dispels an air bubble inside once the SENSOR activates from detecting water. We will be able to breath through the tube from inside the container.

ALTERNATIVELY: if it is just us and our friends visiting Dopus, and metal can’t be gotten to store energy, we could just have it be a different material instead of metal as the container with a BLUE ABSORPTION RUNE to absorb water around us when we’re diving, and link it to a SENSOR, and connect that to a SHAPE RUNE on the wood to trigger the shape rune to give us air from the water around us. Though keep in mind this is just for Chi and her friends to use temporarily, and will need to come up with an invention so it doesn’t absorb water when we mass produce it with METAL.

So for the alterantive solution: a non metal container with a BLUE ABOSORPTION rune on the outside, linked with a SENSOR RUNE to detect water, as well as an INTENSITY SLIDER to adjust how much air we can be given so it isn’t too much or too little, and link that to the SHAPE RUNE ON WOOD on the inside to give us air to flow through a tube we can breath through from the container.

Hmm... Sounds like humans are only interested in plates they can exploit... Or Dopus is fucked. We'll find out when we go there.

Increase the training intensity, three stress over a year isn't terrible.

Give pawn the ticket, don't mention we can memorize books, he'll likely be resentful if that.

Let Ignis Negotiate. He wants to and we trust him.
Royals are probably best bet. Less money, but more freedom and protection.

I think we should spend a time point refining our lesson plan and making sure we have the proper scripting manuals, perhaps making copies secretly just in case the old ones disappear...

I think we should also do the metalworking job for a time point. Less for the money more for the crafting experience, the money is good too though.

A thought strikes me: What if we manifested all 7 sins? Would that not be it's own form of enlightenment? We would effectively gain strength from every mistake we ever make.

If we're working on the lesson plans, we should talk to MINNIE for advice, and moral support. tell her we're nervous about our first day as this was kind of our life's dream to become a runescripting teacher.

We should consider giving students scripting runes that match their color of the mana veins

Still having my vote be tactics with Tutor and Hook

but changing the second timepoint be meditation on VISUAL CALCULUS since more people are voting for that, only if we can have a bonus event for a graduation party (doesn't have to raise stats, or anything, just a cutscene)

You look at some SHINIES with your goggles, not having thought to do so before. When you look at them you actually see some MANA in them, just like when you look at a chunk of ARCANUM or something you’ve RUNESCRIPTED. You use your LOGIC and UNDERSTANDING to come to a conclusion, that it might be possible to extract MANA from the SHINIES. But you’re not sure what the conversion rate would be. They’re not THAT DENSE, so it might take a lot to equate a chunk of ARCANUM. And you still have the whole BATTERY problem, meaning you still need to make one. You’ll start with SHINIES, but if you can get access to MONSTER CORES you could do research there as well

You’ve gained the RESEARCH TASK - MANA DENSE MATERIALS I [SHINIES]
- This task costs 4000 SHINIES worth of materials to do
- This stage costs [1 TIME POINT] to do
You’ve gained the RESEARCH TASK - MANA DENSE MATERIALS II [MONSTER CORES]
- This task costs 16000 SHINIES worth of materials to do
- This stage costs [1 TIME POINT] to do
- The cost can be reduced by owning actual cores

> MULTI SKILL CHECK - GIVE PAWN THE TICKET
You visit PAWN one day, he looks stressed. There are papers everywhere in his apartment. He moved out of the grad dorms a little while ago and has been living here whilst attending his final classes. To your surprise he’s happy to see you and pours you a cup of tea. You take a look at the designs all around the room, it’s hard not to. The one you look at is a HYDROMANA CONDUCTOR, taking the flowing movement of water to produce energy. There’s a RED X on it with a note that says, AQUEDUCTS NOT POWERFUL ENOUGH. There are several diagrams for attempted PERPETUAL MOTION MACHINES, but all have RED Xs on them, saying NET LOSS on them all. The last has a YELLOW SQUARE, it’s of something he calls a ENERGY CONTAINER. The actual cost of the materials is rather expensive, it’s a crude unoptimized thing, but just by the design you can tell that it should work in theory. Pawn’s been busy. He walks in as you’re looking at that design.

Pawn: Oh yeah, sorry about the mess.
Pawn: It’s been kind of a haze lately
You: These are some good designs, you’ve been busy!
Pawn: Yeah, most of these are failures though, or cost too much
You: What are you trying to generate all this energy for?
Pawn: Well, LIGHTS, WATER, and HOT PLATES, if we can somehow get it into kin’s houses it could really revolutionize things
Pawn: It’s hard, but rewarding work. But you came here for something, you considered my offer?
You: I, I think we got off on the wrong foot.

You hand over the Library Ticket and he looks confused.

You: I don’t want to be antagonistic with you.
You: If we can work tangentially, or even together I think we could achieve more good then anything.
You: I kind of just…
You: I want to make the plate a better place to live
You: I want to try forming a more coherent BOND if that makes sense
You: Or failing that have each other as CONTACTS, able to trade information if need be or help even.
Pawn: Uh Huh.
Pawn: I won’t say its impossible for us to get there or anything.
Pawn: We kind of did start off on the wrong foot after all.
Pawn: It’s just…
You: Just what?
Pawn: All the other RUNESCRIPTERS kind of suck
Pawn: Not your group, but like the totality of the kin that learned the trade.
Pawn: I’d say that your group, me, and like 2 others are actually competent enough to do something.
Pawn: The rest kind of just… Don’t know what to do with the knowledge?
Pawn: Ever notice how the kin taking the second class was nearly nonexistent, or at least the ones that passed it?

You think on that for a moment. You can probably count 20 kin that you remember passing it that used your services. And of those 20, potentially 8-10 that you could see becoming scientists. A lot of the kin here did treat it as a hobby more then as an actual career field. Pon was kind of like that, only using it as a supplement to his cooking, rather then diving deep like you were. And those that passed the first class, even with your efforts, kind of just seemed to drop it due to the difficulty and LOGIC needed. It’s not your fault, the teacher didn’t do a good job of even explaining what you could be capable of doing with the knowledge.

You: Yeah, I kind of get what you mean.
Pawn: Then I see you, the first kin to pass it, actually doing stuff with it
Pawn: It’s just frustrating. It takes me like 2x as long as you to do the same thing.
Pawn: So you get why I’d be at least a little competitive, flustered, or JEALOUS?
You: Yeah.
Pawn: Listen, the other two girls that I was talking about, they tried to get me to join them, but their offer was just.
Pawn: Let’s just say it sounds like SLAVERY more than anything, and I don’t SIMP for girls like that.

You wonder BRIEFLY where PAWN learned about SLAVERY and SIMPING as those are two distinct things you haven’t heard mentioned on your plate. Pawn recognizes your expression of confusion.

Pawn: Ah, I learned those words from a book, basically SLAVERY is restricting a person and forcing them to do what you want
Pawn: And SIMPING is… Well I’m not sure, something about blind worship?
You: Uh Huh. Yeah, I know the terms.
Pawn: OH! So you read the OMNIMBUS? What was your favorite part?

[GUILE] You’re in the process of reading it (lie)
You: I’m in the process of reading it, can I get back to you on it?
Pawn: Aww, yeah sure.
Pawn: Well, if we can be amicable like this then maybe I can help you out later on.

Eventually you leave him after offering some advice on a few of his designs. He says that he’ll be around his place for a while, he’s getting a job to pay off the bills but he’s vague about what it actually is. You can feel a BOND forming with PAWN as his attitude shifts from ANTAGONISTIC to NEUTRAL.

You’ve formed a BOND with PAWN at RANK 1
- You know that PAWN is seeking employment so that he can RUNESCRIPT
- You’ll either need a GOOD PITCH to hire him, or INCREASE YOUR BOND to find out his terms
- Spending time with PAWN will be helping him with his EXPERIMENTS and BLUEPRINTS

> LET IGNIS NEGOTIATE
You decide it’s a good idea to let IGNIS negotiate. He’s fairly good at interacting with KIN and he really wants to show you his skills. He’s ecstatic at this and promises not to let you down. You should hear back from him at the end of [TP 1] of NEXT YEAR. He plans to make preparations, find key individuals in the royalty, and get the best possible deal.

> CLASS - TACTICS + TUTOR
You decide to take the TACTICS class, you invite WILLIAM along and he joins, noting he hasn't been in the class for a while, so it should be fun. The class is… Not what you’d have expected at all. There’s about 11 students in total in the class if you include WILLIAM and YOURSELF. The first class is a short lecture on rules, then all of you are issued a 20 page or so manual. You’re told this is the latest version of what he likes to call PLATE TACTICS. It’s a tactical and logistical game of his own design meant to test battlefield tactics and orthogonal thinking. It plays eerily similarly to a few other games you remember from Saba’s world. You have a single plate on one of 6 tables in the room. Apparently there are more tables in the back if there were more students, ready to be put out. Then you have a variety of tokens of various colors and shapes. Each side will have an opposing force. One is the DEFENDER, the other is the ATTACKER. You have points to spend on units and some units do specific things. Then you have the duration of the class to settle the conflict. Some kin take a full week to play out one skirmish, others make a CAMPAIGN out of it. This is just BOARD GAMING. You try out the single class matches at first, playing against each student that’s interested in turn, then you start week long matches with one kin in particular. She introduces herself as TINUPTUA DE PHANTOM RANDOLPHUS, 6th to the throne. She points to her sister and brother VICKY and GOOB, 5th and 7th, respectively. She seems nice enough at first, but is extremely fierce when it comes to these tactics games.

Now, you’re a LOGICAL person. And you tend to play these games in the most LOGICAL manner. But TACTICS is a branch from LOGIC that requires a different mindset. Every individual you play against sans the teacher, who is very obviously holding back, royally kicks your tail-feathers in these games. William is no different. You’re left questioning nearly every move you make, what’s right, what’s wrong, you cave and get a TUTOR for the class, spending the [2000 SHINIES], your PRIDE almost refused to let you, but you’re desperate. The teacher ends up being your tutor directly, so that it’s as unbiased as possible. He spends the classes giving you tips, tricks, openers, platoon formations, and the like. But the problem is that he’s TOO familliar with the game and is more BACKSEAT GAMING you, giving you directions but not GUIDANCE. It’s frustrating, it looks like you didn’t get a GOOD TUTOR this time. William steps in every now and again to give you ACTUAL ADVICE and you cut the TUTORING in half, getting some SHINIES back because you can tell it’s not really going to be useful and WILLIAM is way more capable at helping then the teacher.

In the end you do end up learning about TACTICS a bit, but the progress is a lot slower then you would have preferred. You feel a little sad about that. In the past you prided yourself in your LOGIC and PLANNING, but you never lead large numbers of units, not in this kind of way. This kind of WARFARE is different from what you’re used to, you think it will probably be one of your weaker links in this life.

Your STRATEGY stat has increased to RANK 2
You spent [1000 SHINIES] on tutoring, refunding half due to bad teaching
You did not form a BOND with the PHANTOM RANDOLPHUS TRIPLETS
- You think they’re a package deal, and that to form a bond with one of them, you need to befriend ALL of them
- You’re an acquaintance to TINUPTUA, just two more to go

> END OF THE MEMORIES
You finally absorb the last of SABA’S memories. He lived a fairly long life, 65 years. There were lots of ups and downs, mysteries he never solved, and lives lost. But he impacted everyone in bits with his research. You’re proud to have been him for what its worth. You feel the memories have one last gift to give you, the knowledge of VISUAL CALCULUS.

You’ve gained the VISUAL CALCULUS skill!

- You feel like the FIRST of TWO barriers has been broken towards completely removing your LOGIC SOFT CAP
Your mind has fully integrated it’s past memories, your second INNATE SKILL will now awaken.

The headache comes, but you’re meditating at the time, in your MIND CAMPUS and you watch as streaks of light break through the mist. Many ripples go out knocking you, ANGER, and UNDERSTANDING to the ground. It’s several moments of pain, then it dissapates. A few minutes later it’s stronger pain, you think you hear something in reality, but you’re concentrating. You think it’s Ignis and can feel someone sit next to you. The pain ebbs and flows for a bit in a much more intense fashion than before until suddenly a cool and refreshing feeling washes over not over your mind, but your body as well. But it doesn't stop there. You see the Prismatic egg now, it’s coming out of the mist and heads to the center of your CAMPUS SQUARE, above the big tree. The tree bends and morphs to become more nest-like and the egg CRACKS. You see two things pop out of it, one is a rather large CRYSTAL-LIKE object. It’s almost like a FOUR POINTED STAR. Two of the points fire a beam out into the darkness, you’re not sure where to. The other thing that pops out of it is a girl. No, It’s YOU. But like [UNDERSTANDING] it’s abstract, like a painting, spritework, and illustration all at once. The girl stands up and walks over to you, [UNDERSTANDING] is close by and is watching.

[LINK] Heya, I’m [LINK]
You: Uh, Hi. Are you my new INNATE SKILL?
[LINK] Basically, yeah.
You: And this uh?
[LINK] Oh, I was just being theatrical!
[LINK] You only get to introduce yourself once right?
[UNDERSTANDING] This is very interesting, Hello there!
[LINK] Heya yerself.
[LINK] Yeah I can either let you just like intuit how I work or explain stuff
You: Explain please.
[LINK] Coo. Coo. Coo.
[LINK] So I’m a manifestation of your desire for BONDS
[LINK] I’m also a manifestation of your FEAR of losing TIME
[LINK] Honestly if you didn’t try so hard in the beginning I probably wouldn’t have popped up
[LINK] There was even a time when You almost abandoned getting your BONDS up at all
[LINK] But I’m rambling.
[LINK] I link to up to 4 karmalings that you’ve BONDED with.
[LINK] I picked two that you seemed to like to start with.
[LINK] Then those you’re linked to grow FASTER.
[LINK] You kind of had a ridiculous growth rate there for a while
[LINK] So that’ll be slowing down a bit now
[LINK] Not skill growth though, just STAT growth.
You: Uhhh, that sucks
[LINK] You got like 80 STAT POINTS already, you’ll suck it up I’m sure.
[LINK] Most people get to 40/50 by the time they’re 16, you just got a head start.
[LINK] Oh, but there’s also good news.
[LINK] If they have an INNATE SKILL you get a portion of it.
[LINK] It’s why I picked these two.
[LINK] Oh, and you can remove a link for free at any time
[LINK] But you can’t add a new link to that slot until 4 years have passed since someone’s been set in it
[LINK] That doesn’t count for the IGNIS and WILLIAM ones, but I doubt you’ll be changing those.

An image of WILLIAM and IGNIS appears in your mind. And you [UNDERSTAND] their innate skills. You also realize they can feel the LINK between them to you. You feel like if you just… tug on it. William’s doesen’t respond, you think he’s too far away physically. But Ignis is right next to you, and you hear confused squawking from the CAMPUS GATE. It’s IGNIS. Wait, he’s in your MIND CAMPUS?

[LINK] OH, you can do that?
[LINK] What is this place even?
[LINK] I don’t think I’ve ever seen a
[UNDERSTANDING] *AHEM*
[LINK] Ah right, I forgot.
[LINK] Anyway, I’ll let them tell you what they can do, and you’ll just know what you get out of it.

Ignis: What in the 8 heavens?
Ignis: Uhhh Chi? Chis? Are we in space?
Ignis: Is this a spacecraft?
You: No, No, c’mere Iggy!

Ignis comes over and you introduce him. He’s got an intense expression of confusion on him, but calms down as you explain the situation. He’s in your MIND DORM, some sort of metaphysical representation of your mind. He takes it in stride after his panic dies down as you’ve talked briefly around the subject before. He’s surprised at the abstract-ness of your INNATE SKILLS, but greets them politely. That’s when a look of excitement appears on his face.

Ignis: SO YEAH
Ignis: I came to you because the headaches were back and I was worried you were having the same problem
Ignis: So I just sat next to you because you seemed to be handling it well and copied your meditative stance.
Ignis: And I like just kind of instinctively KNEW what my INNATE SKILL was.
Ignis: The weird thing is that apparently it’s been affecting me for a while now, but now it’s supercharged.

Ignis explains his INNATE SKILL. It turns BONDS into POWER. Anyone IGNIS is bonded to at rank 3 or HIGHER gives him a BOOST to his stats based off of that kin’s main stats. It essentially adds floating points to his stats making it so he acts as if the stat was higher, its easier to learn new things, and skips caps if he knows the right kin and the bond is HIGH ENOUGH. Like for example, because you’re so close to IGNIS he gets LOGIC AND PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY from you. He’ll always be acting at least at RANK 7 for LOGIC rolls.

You instinctively know that this bond is heavily restricted for you. You only get IGNIS’S main stat, CHARISMA. It’s at a whopping 8, which means your CHARISMA checks will always operate at that rank, and breaking past your soft caps will be even easier. You feel that if you were to get closer to IGNIS you’d get more gains, and potentially even get to use this on others you are LINKED to.

After a bit of time passes you gather at WILLIAM’S house, or you would have if William hadn’t appeared at your door with a worried expression on his face. You invite him to your MIND DORM and are seated near the tree. William’s INNATE SKILL is that of a BATTLE TRANCE. When in combat he can ignore intense levels of pain, and even debilitating injuries, allowing him to fly with a broken wing, or eke out a final strike with the last of his willpower. However as soon as he’s to safety he will collapse and suffer from those injuries as they’ve most likely been exacerbated by his movements. William has always been a pretty fierce warrior, he’s been floundering in a few fields lately but eventually settled into trying to become a GENERAL or LEADER OF THE GUARDS. He mentions that it feels like he had a lower form of this skill already, before it awoke, but now it’s more complete.

[UNDERSTANDING] So if you’re destined for an INNATE SKILL, it can lightly manifest in advance?
[UNDERSTANDING] Though I guess it was a bit different for us since I’m around.
[LINK] Cause I’m the best!

You instinctively know that this bond is also heavily restricted for you. WILLIAM has no time limit on his BATTLE TRANCE, the only limit is his STAMINA. You can use a weakened version of his, for 10 seconds, but this doesn’t have to be in battle. So if you’re injured and broken but need those last 10 seconds to do something, anything, you’ll have them. The three of you chat amongst yourselves, wondering what even to do right now.

You: So, got any secrets you guys were too scared to share in the real world?
You: I get the feeling we’re going to stick together, and this is kind of a, well, unreachable domain.
Ignis: You know what, yeah, I’m down, I trust you guys.
William: Trust trio? Yeah. We’re bound to each other now.
Ignis: So I heard a rumor from a human spy we have
Ignis: It’s that the HUMAN PLATE actually MOVED at one point
Ignis: Apparently it was around 154 years ago and caused a big cacophony

[KNOWLEDGE] That was a few years before our plate met the humans.

You: That was right before we met the humans
Ignis: Yeah, weird right. But what caused them to move?
William: I feel like this is on the tip of my tongue.

[UN LOGIC] Didn’t the Humans only discover RUNESCRIPTING around 200 years ago?
[KNOWLEDGE] They existed for more than 1200 years, and got it 1000 years in from what MIZU said so, yes.

And thats when it hits you. Your brain has been floating around these puzzle pieces for a few years now, but it was like making a puzzle in the dark, with only a dim back-light to show you the way. You look to [UNDERSTANDING], the both of you coming to the conclusion at the same time.

You: They used RUNESCRIPTING to move their plate.
Ignis: What?
William: Is that even possible?
You: Think about it, we theorized there’s a rune keeping our plate floating right?
You: What if-
Ignis: What if-
William: What if-
Everyone: What if they found the rune?

[UNDERSTANDING] This is all conjecture but a lot of this lines up.
[INTUITION] What if they didn’t find the rune?
[INTUITION] What if they made a rune?
[UN LOGIC] That’s another possibility
[UN LOGIC] Though, thinking about this now, they must have been able to contact other races before that
[UN LOGIC] and ARCANUM is rare
[CREATIVITY] Could it have been more than just a move?
[CREATIVITY] What if the move WASN’T INTENTIONAL?

William: We’re just in conjectures at this point. But if this is the case.
Ignis: It’s a good argument for why they wouldn’t want us to learn RUNESCRIPTING
Ignis: So we couldn’t LEAVE?
You: But couldn’t they just follow us?

That silences the group of you. If they could just move like you theorized, then why haven't they done that to invade other plates, to invade HIVEN, or TENGU even? This brings more QUESTIONS then ANSWERS. Eventually you stop meditating and continue your conversation outside, things have changed for you all in a kind of significant way. That night your [INTUITION] speaks to you.

[INTUITION] You need to use one of your remaining two bonds on a DOPUS kin.
[INTUITION] No, please, trust me, its like. It’s like something’s screaming at us, in our metaphysical head.
[INTUITION] If we don’t do it with at least 1 kin from DOPUS
[INTUITION] I know you don’t believe in prophecy but I get the feeling only bad will come from NOT doing that
[INTUITION] But only GOOD will come from doing that

You think on that, there is NUBS that you could [LINK] with. And you are visiting DOPUS in a while, maybe you’ll find another INNATE SKILL USER there. You wonder why your [INTUITION] thinks this is a good idea, shouldn’t you just go for whoever gives you the max gains possible? Or maybe the kin you care the most about that will be involved in your day to day? You hope your [LINK] can evolve, or that you can invite others to your [MIND CAMPUS] from farther away if your BONDS are higher or something. You’ll have to try this out at some point.

You’ve gained the INNATE SKILL called [LINK]
- You gain the ability to create links between you and 4 kin
- Links provide a passive multiplier to their STAT GROWTH
- After a short adjustment period all linked Kin will have their stats adjusted to be SIMILAR or GREATER than yours
- Depending on their current stats
- You will also gain a portion of the linked individual’s INNATE SKILL should they have one
- You can invite LINKS to your MIND CAMPUS if they meditate in close proximity to you
- You can force a LINK with someone non consensually, but this could have unintended consequences.
- You can terminate a link at any time, but a link slot cannot be set to another kin until 4 years have elapsed
- WILLIAM and IGNIS as links does not count to this for now and they can be removed and reset at any time
= Though you get the feeling they both wouldn’t appreciate it and it might not be the best idea to do so

> RESULTS - UNDERWATER BREATHING
You and your team have come up with a few prototype ideas. Like before they have their pros and cons.

You come up with a REBREATHER design, it involves a mouthpiece, a tank that stores energy to convert it to air, and tubing. Unfortunately there are several problems with the design. And they mostly come down to NOT HAVING RUBBER. William’s been searching and he says that there’s still a few areas with different trees that there MIGHT be some at, it’d go a lot better if you could pay an expedition to look for it instead, but you’re all strapped for SHINIES at this moment. This design would have been pretty good, but your BIRD BEAKS can’t make seals whilst clamped on something without some sort of rubber or waterproof sponge to block it and prevent drowning.

The second prototype idea comes from DRIFT and involves making a headband that uses about 1/3 an ingot of ARCANUM. It will create a bubble of air that will surround your head and should last long enough for you to get down there and up several times. You think with clever rationing of ARCANUM you could probably make 3 per ingot, but this is the expensive yet safe alternative. This could also be made into a CHOKER with relative ease and he implies that it might be safer that way.

The third prototype is unique to say the least. WILLIAM came up with it, It requires making a literal helmet out of wood with a glass window and some straps. You can strap this over your head and the inside of the helmet will produce air by absorbing water from the outside. There are major safety concerns with this one though and it all comes down to lacking RUBBER. You don’t have a way to make a seal. And you don’t have a way to accommodate for water pressure the further down you go, so you’re worried the wooden helmet might rupture the deeper you go.

IGNIS came up with another option, one based off of a pressure suit he vaguely remembers from his past life. It’s a GILL and PRESSURE system. Several points along a suit are inlaid with runes to absorb water via motion, your swimming. Motion makes oxygen go into the suit and he even has a few ideas for regulating pressure depending on the water level. His dreams are also dashed from the lack of WATERPROOF MATERIALS THAT YOU CAN SEAL. You have glue, but it’s water soluble based off of your tests. You’ll need to INVENT a new glue that isn't along with the RUBBER. You’re starting to get upset that all of your good ideas are being shut down by lack of resources.

Then there’s a 5th option, an alteration on the second, a large carryable device that eliminates the water in the area, you’d have to stay close to the other kin, but then you could walk on the floor of the water without it ever touching you. You also have to make a light, so you add a lantern to it, which only increases the power consumption. You sigh, It all comes down to money again. You’re out of personal ARCANUM, and the last 1/3 that remained from before is getting passed around and reused until it runs out. You hope your dad has good news from his hunt, or that IGNIS can come up with a good trade with TENGU, you let him know to mention this part to the ROYALS as part of the deal in case they’re interested.

You can decide between making a HEADBAND OF AIR or a LANTERN OF BREATHING
- HEADBANDS OF AIR cost around 5000 SHINIES in materials to make (1/3 an ingot of ARCANUM)
- LANTERNS OF BREATHING cost 15000 SHINIES in materials to make and let you bring multiple kin with you
= But you have to be careful, accidents could happen if you’re not tethered together.
You might also want to bring along a SUN SCEPTER so you can see in the dark as this is underwater

You bring up these ideas and concerns to NUBS and she lets you know that the kin they brought, the one that was drowning, they were able to safely bring them down at high speeds without any problem by giving them constant mouth to mouth. Which almost didn't work since they had a BEAK and all, but that she’d prefer not to have to do that as the process is a little demeaning and highly risky. At least you know that WATER PRESSURE won’t kill you at the depths you’ll be going to for the city. Nubs says that she’ll see about getting some SHINIES so you can make 3 HEADBANDS. You’re obviously putting in the effort that excites her, making her want to also put in the effort.

> RESULTS - SCRIPTING PEN RESEARCH
Your scripting pen research provides partial dividends. You figure out a way to modify it so that you can make THICKER and THINNER rune-scripting inscriptions. The effect of drawn runes is the same, but now you know that if you learn MICROSCRIPTING you’ll actually be able to inscribe things much smaller then even PAWN could, unless he also knows how to do this. You use your goggles to check and it’s possible to make barely visible inscriptions with this. You can’t figure out how to siphon other color mana yet, but if you learn MICROSCRIPTING you can make a more STREAMLINED SCRIPTING PEN. The ones you are all using are unwieldy, tattoo-gun-like things. MICROSCRIPTING could let you turn it into a more traditional ballpoint pen or pencil.

> RESULTS - PIERCING THE MIST
Your father and his team comes to your house a little before the end of the year, he’s got a satchel he puts down and you look over the team. They look a mixture of EXCITED and FRUSTRATED. You look to the group and your [PERCEPTION] spots something. SNOW PEA is missing one of his feet. You ask what happened and he looks embarrassed.

Snow Pea: It’s my fault. I… I got pulled into the mood, everyone was so excited with their new gear
Snow Pea: I forgot my claws weren’t modified too, this is my hubris.

[GUILE] He’s lying, hiding something

Snow Pea: I’ll probably become a trainer or a guard now.
Snow Pea: This is a risk of Hunting after all.
Snow Pea: But other then that it’s good news, great news even!
Draco: It was terrifying, but yes, other then this AVOIDABLE INJURY
Draco: It was successful
Draco: You know I love you SNOW PEA, but that scared the shit out of us
Gungnir: Us giving you shit is how we show we care y’know.
Snow Pea: I know, I know.

[GUILE] It’s subtle but I don’t think he lost his foot from a PUMA

Your father explains how they entered the mountain and stalked for weeks until they found the lair of what they thought to be a single Puma. It turned out to be a PRIDE of them, there were at least 10, but using your gear many of them froze and were cut down with ease. Draco pulls out a softball sized peach-pit like object. A Monster core.

Draco: And this. This was the LEADER’S Core. You said you wanted one, well this is the best we could get.
Draco: All the cores are in here.
Draco: There’s also a few bones, claws, etc. There’s also the pelt of a large one in there, it’s a heavy bag.
Draco: I figure you could make something out of the stuff with your MAGITECH

You’re told that the parts from a single MIST PUMA sold for between 4-6K SHINIES without the CORES. The cores themselves are normally worth 2-3K SHINIES and are about fist sized. You look at them with your Goggles and they are DENSE with MANA. You don’t have accurate data on them, but you imagine that one of these cores has more or less around 1/3 of an ingot of ARCANUM’S worth of MANA in them. But the LEADER’S core might sell for as low as 30K SHINIES or as high as 100K SHINIES. That one is much denser then an ingot of ARCANUM that’s for sure. The surplus parts from the leader gave them a bonus of 10K SHINIES and that was a very pleasant bonus. Unfortunately, due to SNOW PEA’S injury, the funds they were going to give you as compensation are being given to him instead so that he has backup funds. In total they earned over 66000 SHINIES from that one endeavor.

You ask them why the trip took so long, they explain it was [1 TP] of traveling to come there and back, [1 TP] of scouting for the location, [1 TP] for the encounter, and the other [3 TP] was for a separate job. And with that the entire group thanks you and wishes you well. Your father remains behind and tells you that he left you another surprise in the bottom pocket of the backpack. He leaves and you open it up. There’s a single ingot of ARCANUM there and a note. The note essentially says that your weapons were beyond amazing, so he spent his share of the gains on an ingot of ARCANUM to pay you for the enchantments. He couldn’t say it in front of the group because they agreed to hold onto their shares and he’s the leader. And that you shouldn’t worry, the other job paid as well so him and your moms won’t go hungry. You’re touched by your father’s kindness but still feel like something is off.

[INTUITION] I don’t really think confronting him will gain anything, he’ll probably tell you when he’s ready
[UN LOGIC] That does tend to be how macho men act.
[CHARISMA] Not PON tho!
[CHARISMA] He’s a softie!

> RESULTS - GAMBLING
Your mom is heading back home soon, so you squeeze a lot of time for her this year. You also gamble a non insignificant sum of [700 SHINIES]. It’s time to see how you did. You avoid some of the higher roller tables, avoid that penguin guy who keeps messing your games up, and play the long, safe game. You don’t take TOO many risks. Some might say you played it TOO SAFE, but not you. You came up with a profit of [635 SHINIES]. Your GUILE doesen’t increase this time, but that just means you need to gamble more! Your mom says you need to take more RISKS when you’re at the lower end of gambling. It’s the best way to improve faster.

You gained [1335 SHINIES]

> EVENT - GRAD PARTY
You and your BONDS decide to get together after the last day of classes. You all take that weekend to relax, have fancy meals, and party! Your parents come, their parents come, it’s generally a good time. PAWN even shows up at your invite and after a few minutes of awkwardness ends up being rather sociable with the others. Nubs is there, celebrating with you even though she still has classes.

16 years. You’ve certainly grown up rather fast these past 16 years. So much has happened, from a baby bird to nearly an adult you’ve gone from putting things in your mouth to putting things in the minds of others. A TEACHER. It’s a noble goal. Some kin might not like what you’re doing, but you’ve got STRONG BONDS. Good CONNECTIONS, and tons of IDEAS. There’s no doubt in your mind that you’ll bring CHANGE to this plate. Sure you’re a bit PRIDEFUL, but your LOGIC is KING.

So what if there are CONSPIRACIES abound? You can UNDERSTAND them. Armies? You’ll ARM your PLATE and protect them from the back lines. Who knows it will come to any of that, but you’re preparing yourself and those close to you as best as you can. Is it weird that you feel more IN CONTROL of your life this time around? In your previous one, you were just a leaf floating on the breeze. A leaf that got shocked with Electricity and grew powers, but a leaf nonetheless. Holes eventually appeared but you were still floating along the breeze. That is until that same electricity came and burnt you to ash.

This time is different. You’re a literal bird in the sky. The sky is the limit, you have FREEDOM, you have KNOWLEDGE, you can make things BETTER. Though this might just be your PRIDE speaking, you don’t think its far off.

AUTHORS NOTE: Wow unholy shit, thanks for reading everybody. SHARDS was meant to be a simple side quest I ran whilst doing the CATALYST INTERMISSION, but it ended up as so much more. It became this strange, really in depth life sim. I certainly learned a lot by running this, and I’m hoping to apply what I’ve learned to the future of SHARDS. For example, TIME POINTS, I went really in depth with some of them and it kind of caused bloat, but I tried my best not to make it all fluff and apparently you all really enjoyed that.

I thought up the idea for this quest because I was inspired by WUXIA, REINCARNATION, and ISEKAI stories. I wanted to tell something that I had floating in my head, of a universe that only cared if you paid it (lmao) and thats kinda how KARMA works, it doesent care how you get it as long as it feeds the machine in the end. I think the decision to become a teacher is going to be an interesting one and lead to some interesting plotlines.

I’m really looking forward to part 2. I have a few events planned that I think are going to be pretty interesting. Including a few ADVENTURE styled events where you play as Chi in a more CATALYST style, exploring an area like DOPUS and doing things or meeting other kin. There’s also a few ruins I’ve got planned, and if you trigger a few scenes there will be a major plot event and slight tonal shift. Can’t be a happy peaceful life all the time. Well actually it could, but it requires both doing some things and not doing others, which I of course won’t spoil for you ;).

Thanks for sticking with me these past 2.5 months, this thread went on longer then I expected, heck I was originally intending to speed through your adolescence and jump into an entirely different quest but you guys came up with so many cool and unique setting bits that I just had to make it the main thing. Sometimes the coolest ideas can come from allowing your first idea to float away, and I think this is a good example of that.

Stay tuned for PART 2, we’ll hit the ground running with TEACHING INITIATION and also any missing resolutions like what breathing apparatus style you’re going with, what’s your new research, books, etc. I’m probably going to have [TP 1 and 2] get used during the first update just so we can do the syllabus and the first class all in one, but we’ll see.

~Later~
