Known sometimes as The Friendly Wilderness, Eraname is a small plane in a sea of hundreds of individual planes of existence. A small hospitable patch on an otherwise fiery planet, The Friendly Wilderness exists in a state of perpetual and temperate summer, and for nearly 700 years now, life there has been quiet, peaceful, and simple.

That may be about to change. The Elven Dynasty, fearing an invasion on their home plane, has turned to verdant Eraname in their search for resources to make preparations. The Nature Spirits of Eraname, however, do not like their resources being taken in this volume for this purpose, and some, more loyal to the plane than to the Dynasty's Emperor, have taken up resistance.

This conflict, while brewing, has not yet reached its breaking point. It seems as if it's only a matter of time before it reaches full-on conflict.

We may be getting ahead of ourselves, though. We have our stage and our script, now all we need is our leading actor.

Ah, there you are. Our leading actor. That rain looks terrible, I certainly hope you aren't caught in it for too long. It isn't due to start for another few days yet, though. I wouldn't worry about it.

Before you were caught out in that storm, and certainly before you became who you would become, you were first a citizen of Eraname just like any other. Think back, if you don't mind, and tell us about who that was.

Let's start with the physical.

There are several species with noteworthy populations on Eraname, to which of these do you belong? Listed from most to least populous.

- Elf (adaptable, far-reaching, ubiquitous everymen.)

- Dwarf (skilled craftsmen and warriors blessed by their gods, deeply xenophobic.)

- Human (tenacious survivors recovering from extinction.)

- Gnome (fey-touched, endlessly curious, bordering on manic.)

- Aasimar (angelic by blood and by reputation.)

- Tiefling (devil-blooded nobility and masters of arcane secrets.)

- Half-Elf (welcomed by both families, but rarely fully understood.)

- Planetouched (shaped by the innate magic of an elemental plane or the shadowfell.)

- Half-Orc (welcomed by both families, but likely separated from their Orcish heritage.)

What is your age? (Young Adult, Adult, Middle-Aged)

What is your physical build?

Race: Aasimar. We're exotic, we're alien, we've got a connection to the outer planes. But that doesn't mean we're as holy as we look.

Age: Young Adult. We're skilled, but lacking in experience. It's time to set out into the world and discover who we are.

Build: Medium height, slender, femboy. We don't take up too much space, but we're pretty enough to draw attention.

Taking votes from here and MSPFA, we've got: 2 each for Human and Aasimar, and 1 each for Dwarf, Tiefling, Gnome, and Planetouched, I'm going to use the planetouched vote to count as a tie-breaker and pick Aasimar for our MC. In addition, middle aged won with three total votes, against adult and young adult each getting two, and the votes seem to be leaning towards a slim-to-skinny build.

I did forget to include gender as a question in this set of questions, so I'll try to find somewhere else to fit that in later on in chargen. Or I'll just start drawing and see what comes out.

There are a number of settlements scattered across Eraname's small habitable area, but only one of them is your home. As an Aasimar, that's an easy conclusion to draw - they are the majority on only one settlement. Even those of you who were born elsewhere on the plane tend to find themselves making their way to Aalen Monastery, one way or another.

Originally started as a retreat for monks and druids, over the last 700 years a village has sprung up around the Monastery, and it continues to draw servants of the divine, arcane researchers, and students of martial arts. It is a quiet, peaceful sort of town, and its people tend to be welcoming, if disciplined. The notable exception here is their leader, a woman who has been here since the Monastery's founding, and insists on regular parties in the grand hall.

Everyone has training in one form or another, whether that's years of formal education, pure life experience, self-taught skills, or innate abilities. Yours will be turned to the purpose of something incredible eventually, but we all start somewhere. Let's see where yours stand at the beginning of your journey.

In combat, what role can your party members expect you to fill? (Melee damage, Ranged damage, Tanking, Support, Debuffing/control)

Out of combat, what role can your party members expect you to fill? (Party face, Knowledge, Scout, Crafting, etc.)

How much of a focus on magic do you have? (None, Reduced casting, Half casting, Full casting)

We're almost done with these questions. Just one more left, and we can finally begin telling your tale.

You might not put much stock in things like stars and the fates written within them, but the fact remains - the stars have things to say about you. Every one of us has a constellation that marks our birth, and while many people don't believe this changes much about the shape your life takes, we know better, don't we?

So - which constellation were you born under?

The White Flag: Consists of 5 stars arranged in the form of a ribbon waving in the wind. those born under the sign of the White Flag exemplify the teachings and gifts of their family line, and are considered the culmination of their ancestor's efforts. Indeed, this sign imparts a heavy responsibility, even if the family has no true history to speak of - for the role of granting greatness to the family now lies in the hands of the newborn.

The Radiance: Consists of 10 stars in the form of a phoenix with wings unfurled. Those born under the Radiance are invariably blessed by the divine in some way, and spread this blessing to those around them through generosity or the direct evangelization for the divine. They tend to overexert themselves for their goals, though, and must fall back on the kindness of those they aid at least once and a while.

The Truestrike: Consists of 5 stars in the form of a cloud. Those born under its sign bring resolution as part and parcel of their fates, signaling either the beginning or end of a kingdom, a prophecy, a war, or even perhaps an age. They are difficult to predict, as they have few traits of their own, instead blending in seamlessly into whatever society birthed them. Even those well-versed in the signs rarely recognize one born under the Truestrike until it is too late, and their fate is already complete - after all, they do not need to be central to the event that they herald. Indeed, all too often a bystander of some pivotal event bears this sign, and thus cements its happening merely by being there.

The Tyrant's Trident: Consists of 4 stars appearing as a trident, held aloft. Those born under its sign will experience a significant loss in their life, for the Tyrant's Trident only appears for those who must pay in karma for their past life. As if to make up for this, they have an undying ambition, guaranteeing that they will gain enough to lose - and that they will likely continue past that loss. This ambition is cold, however, and though they may amass friends and family as part of their goals, they will never be truly understood.

The Saffron Feast: Part of a midnight blue nebula, consists of 9 stars forming a table laden with food. Those born under its sign live at the mercy of their own emotions - bombastic, hedonistic, and as mutable as quicksilver. Their lives are a series of dramatic scenes and a trail of broken hearts, and those that are charismatic and lucky enough to play this to their advantage will rarely have a difficult day in their lives. Those who cannot manage to charm their way through the days invariably destroy themselves.

What was the result of the previous choice? It seems that some constellations are more fitting for certain character concepts.

Without further information, I choose The Saffron Feast. We have a little piece of Heaven in our soul, and we seek to find our own Heaven in the joys of this mortal realm.

But that might be ill-suited to the quiet, thoughtful character that was suggested previously.

I hadn't planned on posting the results until I did the wrap-up with the full design, but you're totally right that the results might color what people want to do.

So, the winning combination was that Support/Crafting/Full Caster combination. Saffron Feast as a result might pull a bit away from the fully quiet and introspective idea suggested there, but certainly doesn't negate it entirely!

I think we've got the idea - ah, and there you are. In the right place and time for the beginning of this story, this time.

You are one of many aasimar living in Aalen Monastery and its surrounding village, where you have been working for a few decades now as an herbalist and a healer, aided by alchemical knowledge and the spark of divine magic you have been gifted with. You were born under the sign of the Saffron Feast some 150 years ago, and while once, you were the very picture of mercurial, hedonistic excess that the sign usually evokes, it is behavior you have largely grown out of.

The hangover you are currently nursing is unrelated.

Today is Arslux, the 26th of Mahmijin in the year 1590. Two weeks ago, the plane called out for help, and only six days ago, the first act of outright aggression occurred outside the gates of the human town of Odeslani. The world feels as if it hangs on a sharp precipice, a collective breath held until whatever shoe drops next.

You will inevitably be at the center of whatever is to come next, Hero.

When they sing of your deeds, what will they call you?

(Looking for a name and gender/pronouns. Aasimar in the Ninefold setting are usually given names in the Celestial language, which bears a strong resemblance to Icelandic.)

Your name is… Oh, now that is interesting. Quite an unusual name for one of your kind, it almost sounds like…

… Well. Never mind that. I'm sure it's fine.

Your name is Yriel, and while events are going to get very interesting for you very soon, right now, you are at the beginning of a day very similar to any other.

You stand in your office, something between an infirmary and an apothecary's. This is where you do the bulk of your work, where you take the plants you harvest or buy to process, and where you treat your patients when you have them.

You currently have two patients under your care. One of them is a young monk of the monastery, whose business you see a little too much of, and the other, a strange newcomer to town who likely wouldn't need to be taking up one of your beds if he wasn't sleeping off the same hangover you're currently dealing with.

What will you do?

A healer's first duty is to check on our patients, of course. Particularly this strange and interesting newcomer. If there's one thing we've learned from our lively youth, it's that the mortal body is an intricate work of art which requires constant care.

Then we take inventory of our medicines and tools in case there's anything we need to restock. We mustn't be caught unprepared in a time of need!

The newcomer is asleep, still, snoring lightly, but the monk is awake, although she sits in meditation while she waits.

Her name is Iantha, no family name you’ve ever heard her mention, and even if she didn't need you to make her weekly doses of medicine, she'd be here to see you with alarming regularity. If it wasn't the medicine, it would be one of her near-constant injuries, or it would be one of her semi-regular episodes where eating or sleeping upsets her too much to attempt.

You have no idea who raised this girl, but apparently, they did so absolutely absent any of the usual survival instinct one might expect from a living being.

You joked, once, that she might be making up reasons to come by more often for your stellar company and good wit, but you're not entirely sure she knows how to have an ulterior motive.

While you're up and walking around your office anyways, you take stock of your supplies — most of your fresh herbs are supplied by the monastery gardens, you rarely have to worry about running low on those. The things you do have to be concerned about are ones you can't get your hands on without more than a day or two's travel, and those, you don't try to gather on your own. Aalen sees travelers often enough, and enough of those travelers are people making their way in the wilderness that you can get your hands on some further-ranging herbs and supplies commonly enough.

You do note that you're running low on winterbite. It grows easily, and would be plentiful and easy to find on any plane with a more varied climate than Eraname, but as it is, travelers have to get almost to the peak of Mt. Firelash or Mt. Stoneblade to find it. You'll have to see if anyone coming by soon is headed that way.

He has given you a name to use. You doubt it's his real name, or even a real name at all, but when prompted, he introduced himself as "the humorous and honorable Captain Stand!" along with a bow so dramatic, you thought for a second that he might just throw himself face-first onto the ground.

Well, this strange man from the nearby island is certainly an interesting fellow. I wonder what brings him to these parts. If we were just a little younger, we'd be feeling smug that he's already passed out in our bed. OK but make it quick and shut the door, we still haven't found that scorpion yet.

What's important is to not acknowledge the pirate's new scars. He's always had those. He is a pirate after all.

This isn't an assignment to conveniently get rid of some misfits is it?

well I doubt he's here to arrest anyone since he's by himself and didn't start the conversation by kicking down your door so let's hear him out.

just make sure you pocket that charcoal and if anyone tells the pirate about his face just tell him he came in like that and you haven't removed it because you weren't sure if he drew it on himself or not and didn't want to upset him. and if he did want to remove it point him to a wash area and say it should wash off fairly easily.

Mirror his pose and give him a gentlemanly fist bump. It would be rude to leave him hanging like that.

He might indeed find the three of us here, presuming of course that we are the three he's looking for. Who is "Palla", and why the interest in us particularly? An herbalist, a monk, and a drunken newcomer in our bed don't exactly have much in common, skill-wise. At least, I hope we're being requested for some special task; the alternative is that we're all involved in some sort of incident, and that spells trouble which may or may not be the fun kind.

Sverrir looks a bit worn out. Does he seem healthy to us? We're a healer, we've got to check.
