>Pretend to be a lost pet or pretend to be wild?
Oh crap, I have to decide fast, the chameleon has already stepped onto the lawn to snoop around. Uh, well, the only difference it would really make is whether the chameleon can identify me as me and not Sky, Grass, or Root. I don’t think he’ll be fooled by the innocent dumb bunny act.
I hook my fingers around my collar. This is my biggest reminder of Lucy and what she means to me and if I have a choice I don’t want to abandon it!
>Bolt north
He’s coming straight for the bushes, I think he knows about my burrow. Before he can corner me I dart out of the ground and head toward the back of the house, toward the woods. Even if my brothers aren’t ready yet, this is good to get the chameleon to start searching in this direction.
No reptile can keep up with a sprinting rabbit, but this guy tries, boots stomping the ground as he charges after me. He’s not going to shoot while he gives chase, is he?
I don’t hear any gunshots and by the time I reach the edge of the neighborhood, I’m sure I’ve lost him.
That went pretty well! My heart is thudding but I don’t think I was in much danger since I caught the fellow by surprise. I slowly calm down in the cool shade, eat, and meander toward the scent of my friends.
I spot them lounging around a decent sized trench at the bushes at the edge of the forest and the field. Grass is grooming Sky and Root is sprawled out, all lazy happiness. They don’t know I’m back yet, and I feel a pang of resentment that they’re doing so well without me. That’s been the story of things since our escape, when I got separated. I’d just bring down the mood if I went to bother them.
A. Stay away until dark
B. Join them anyway
