The slime hid in a bush and observed the squirrel. Flexing and stretching it took on a shape more small and cute, though still green and gooey. Burbling happily it gamboled out to greet its first friend.

The squirrel was startled at first. He sniffed the slime curiously, pawing at its goopy cheeks. Satisfied, he chittered a greeting and scampered around the slime. The two got to chasing each other and having a fun time.

The slime followed along, imitating the squirrel. Rooting under some leaves it found a nice big acorn. Hmm, what to do with it?

The slime wanted to get closer to its friend, so it bashed the acorn on a rock until it split in half. The squirrel happily accepted the offered half, and stuffed its cheeks. Not feeling hungry but wanting to be included, the slime followed suit.

As the acorn dissolved within the slime it felt it was not just gaining mass, but understanding as well. It felt as though it could become the acorn. And so it did, letting its newly acquired matter coalesce back into a little seed.

When it was ready, the new acorn plopped out into the slime's paws. Holding it felt odd, separate yet still connected.

Interesting. Does it feel like it could grow into a tree? (wait, we don't know how seeds work yet) Let's find other things to eat and turn into! Apparently, we don't need the whole thing, so eating part of a corpse should work. Just about any new dead thing should do! If we're lucky we can find something big, but even a dead bug would be neat.

Do whatever it feels like the acorn-slime is supposed to do. Does it feel right to dig a hole and plant it? To give it to a bird? Or just to leave it somewhere? If you don't have any instincts on what to do with it, probably just reabsorb it for now.

Slime wasn't sure what to do with it's acorn child, so it showed it to Squirrel. It's friend showed it how to bury, and so it did. Slime wanted to see what would happen, but it was getting very late and Squirrel was tired. Slime followed him to his den and they curled up to sleep.

Watching a seedling grow wasn't very interesting, so Slime tried being a tree itself. It formed some branches and leaves, but they were so goopy they just sagged. Slime didn't think it looked like a proper tree, so it decided to try absorbing some more things.

It rooted around on the ground for things to use. Twigs, leaves, rocks, and even dead bugs all got slurped up and dissolved. Well, except for the rocks, those just fell back out. Everything that Slime took in it tried recreating, like it had the acorn. The twigs and leaves came out fresh and green. The bugs came out whole and crawling. Soon Slime had a little patch of forest that was all itself, plants and animals and fungi all one.

For the record, trees are supposed to absorb things from under the ground. If you can learn to make roots, you'll be able to suck up all sorts of tasty nutrients.

For now, try to absorb the fox. After absorbing it or scaring it off, check on the squirrel; if he's wounded, try to put some of your own goo in the wound and rebuild just the damaged parts of his body. If that doesn't work and he's too badly wounded to survive, absorb him and rebuild him inside yourself like you did the bugs.

Fox was in a panic, her belly filled with goo. But she didn't have long to worry as Slime, feeling cramped, soon slurped her up from the inside. Slime swirled the dissolved fox around inside itself and thought it would just keep her for a while as punishment.

Watching a fox get turned inside out wasn't quite enough to distract Squirrel from his broken back, though it would give him nightmares later. Slime rushed over to try and help its poor friend. It grabbed Squirrel but didn't know how to fix him, and every movement just made him cry in pain. So Slime did the only thing it could think of and absorbed Squirrel.

Just as soon as Squirrel was dissolved Slime set to reforming him. It gently laid him down on the ground, hoping that he would still be its friend, that being slimed didn't change him too much.

Slime waited and waited, until finally Squirrel opened his eyes. He scampered up and hugged Slime. Now that they were connected Slime could understand Squirrel, which manifested as speech in a very narratively convenient way.

"Oh thank you, thank you for saving me!" Squirrel said.
"I'm just happy you're okay." burbled Slime "Do you feel different?"
Squirrel considered this, "Hmmm, I think I feel better than I ever have, like I could run and run forever."

The two then danced around and around, as squirrels are known to do. It was a little awkward though, as Slime was now one fox bigger. "What should I do with this fox?" it asked Squirrel "I don't think she is a bad fox, but I don't want her to hurt you again."

"Oh, sorry. I just wanted to see what it was like." Slime appologized. "It makes me want to steal."

Squirrel giggled as Slime snatched a large nut and scampered into the bushes. It reemerged sheepishly a moment later. "I don't know why I did that."

Left alone in its little patch of forest, Slime did a gekker that ended in a big sneeze. Out flumped Fox, back to her old self. She bounded up and yelled at Slime "What'd you have to go and do that for?"

"You hurt my friend!" Slime yelled right back.

"Only for a little while, then he would be eaten and wouldn't hurt at all!"

"That's even worse!" Slime burbled "Don't eat my friend!"

"Well what can I eat? Nuts and berries won't fill me up! And what about my poor kits? They need meat to grow strong! So what should I bring them huh?"

Slime had a feeling the answer to this question would be very important.
>>
No. 1114112 ID: 70f58a

You don't know enough yet to solve this. You have not even been alive for one day. ...where are those berries it mentioned? What other foods are here, and has it seen any other creatures? Is the whole world like this, or are there other kinds of places? If you explore more, maybe you can find another kind of food, a kind that doesn't think or feel but is still filling. Maybe you could produce food yourself with your sliminess? But you'd need to replenish your losses as well.

Until then, you must accept that the cycle of life continues... aside from your one friend. They are under your protection.
>>
No. 1114118 ID: 4c750c

There must be a solution to this, but we don’t know enough about our own nature, or the nature of the world. (For instance, we don’t quite know there are animals besides squirrels and foxes yet) For now, perhaps we can arrange a simple truce between Fox and our friend Squirrel, until we can come up with a better plan? If we absorb more things, perhaps we could recreate some food for Fox later, like how we planted our acorn self.

That's a simple answer. Fox can go after any animals that we're not friends with. Squirrel is our only friend, so that gives Fox plenty of options to choose from.
>>
No. 1114131 ID: 46c3bc

You can't change the cycle of life. Perhaps eventually you can define a new one for the creatures you spawn. But you have a lot to learn and even more to absorb before that's even an option.

For the time being, though, you have a very simple answer for her. That squirrel isn't made of meat anymore. He's made of slime. So he's off the menu regardless.

Is she still flesh and blood, or is she made of slime too? If so, you might draw her attention to this fact, and that her digestive and metabolic processes are different.

Slime hung its head "I don't know. Just don't eat my friend, please."

Fox flicked her tail "I won't, for now. But I make no promises. If he gets eaten later its his own fault for being too slow." With that she dashed away before Slime could say anything.

Slime sat for a bit. There was so much it didn't know about the world. The sky was getting brighter, so Slime slimed its way up a tree to get a look. The rising sun warmed it and it rested, thinking about where it could get answers.

As it rested Slime could sense the plants and things it had assimilated, growing and living down on the forest floor.

It could sense Squirrel resting in his tree hollow.

It could sense Fox sneaking through the tall grass.

It could see the light glittering off the distant skyscrapers.

The shining towers called to slime. Dim fragments of its time before being a slime briefly surfaced in its gooey mind. Following a paved path it soon found the edge of the park. Before it stretched the suburbs. Row upon row of houses between Slime and its goal.

Looking out, Slime had a sense that something was wrong. The streets were empty, the houses dark. No distant sounds except the wind and bird calls.

"Perhaps I shouldn't do this alone" thought Slime "A friend or two would make this trip easier. And less scary."

Slime didn't want to bother sleepy Squirrel, and Fox seemed busy, so it went looking for someone to befriend. It didn't have wander down the path long before something leaped out of the bushes onto it.

"Oh hi!" Slime said to the scraggly Wolf that was doing her best to chew through goo. "Would you like to-"

But Wolf just kept ravaging Slime, though her best efforts only deformed it momentarily. "Hey stop that!" Slime was getting dizzy from getting squished around.

Slime realized that it hadn't actually talked to Fox or Squirrel until it had absorbed them. So with a shrug it relaxed itself and let Wolf fall inside. After a few minutes of dissolving and resolving, there where two wolves in the park; one a little less skinny and mangy than before, the other drippy and green.

"So, as I was saying" Slime continued "Would you come with me on a journey?"

"I uh wha-" the bewildered Wolf stammered "I don't understand what just happened but, I'm not as hungry now? And I wasn't catching anything here so, I guess I can go with you?"

"Great! I'll just check if there's anyone else nearby to bring. Won't be a minute!" Slime cheerfully scampered up into a tree.

Slime was half way up when it felt many small somethings smack into it. It looked down and saw a bunch of tiny shapes wriggling around inside it. "Oops, let me try to get you out." Slime said. But the Queen and her drones just couldn't make any progress, so Slime shrugged and absorbed them too.

Not sure what would happen to all its mass if it took an ant form, Slime decided to stay a wolf shape while it reformed the little swarm. Soon it had a dozen ants gathered on its nose. The smaller drones huddled around their queen.

"Sorry about that." said Slime "Did I get in your way? Where were you going in such a hurry?"

"Oh no, it was my fault, really." Queen said "I am just in such a rush to find a place to start our nest, I wasn't watching where we were going. All the good spots seem to be taken already."

"I'm going on a journey into the city. Maybe we could find you a home on the way." Slime said

"That would be lovely, thank you." Queen took off, her drones buzzing around her, and they followed Slime back to Wolf.

Slime's feeling that something wasn't right grew stronger as they made their way down the empty street. None of the houses had any lights on, nor any sign of movement. Some had their doors wide open. Others were shut tight, with yellow squares affixed to them.

"Whoa you remember? What are you old?" Wolf teased Slime "I don't remember so good, since I got washed away in the big rain. Think I remember the pack always said, don't go to the human dens. Too dangerous. But look, there's no humans here at all. Maybe they got sick? I've been alone here for a lot of moons and I've never seen one."

"I'm too young to remember much of anything." buzzed Queen "Yet if the humans haven't been seen in some time, then that should mean their den is safe to go in, no?"

Slime felt reassured. Whatever sickness was here must have passed. And it had fixed Squirrel when he got hurt, so surely it could fix this too. "Still, lets stick to the one without the yellow mark."

suddenly the room got bright. On a large metal box next to the door, a screen lit up with a silly looking face. "Bweep Bzeep Bwoop! I somewhat suspected the humans here had died out. It should be safe to loot their stuff.

So you're capable of understanding human language. Can you shift into something that can speak it? If so, you might be able to interact with this machine; its ability to understand things will be limited, but it may still have access to the humans' information network.

Also, between the fact you understand their language and that you remember things only a human should know, I'm starting to wonder if you were one in a past life. At some point you'll want to really think on it and see what all you do remember about their civilization.

Slime's first instinct was to absorb the talking box, but its slime just slopped off without any effect. 'Just like those rocks earlier' thought slime 'I guess I can only eat soft things.'

Drawing on the distant memories of its past lives Slime was able to rustle up an approximation of human form. "Well hey there, y-you! uh. Just getting food for my one pet. You were mistaken, there's just one dog here."

"Blink blink" Smart House said, blinking "Oh! That's right only one dog is here. Breakfast time! What would you like?"

Slime tried to remember what would be in a human house. "Bacon, milk, eggs, uh maybe cheese? and um, pwaffles."

"Great choices! ...Bwoop, you are out of bacon, milk, and eggs. Ordering more... uh oh, the delivery service is experiencing delays." the box made a sad bwooping sound. "Here is the cheese." The front of the box opens to reveal wrapped lumps and boxes in chilly air. "You'll have to make pwaffles yourself. Order Smart House handy hands and never have to make breakfast again!"

The door next to the box opened onto shelves of yet more boxes. Not trusting House, Slime reached in to grab some before it could close the door again. It grabbed some of the cold packages too, dumping them on the floor where Wolf started ravaging them. "Oh this stuff smells old and funny, but I'm hungry!" She whined as she gnawed on grey meat strips. Meanwhile Queen and her drones made a beeline for a jam jar that had cracked open on the ground.

While its friends ate Slime addressed House "So can you do other things besides food? Like tell me about things?"

"Of course [User Name]! Let me summarize the news for you... Quarantine is still in effect for the greater bay area! President says anyone who doesn't join the evacuation is on their own! Is your teen going to jar parties? Look for these warning signs! Everyfactory opens in North Point! Unemployment on the rise in North Point! Latest billboard top 100! Number 35 will shock you! Bay area library system to shut last branch after publisher settlement! Only gen -Y will remember these brands! Construction on vessel 5 stalls as workers call for larger cabins! This device can cool your entire house in 15 minutes! Invented by a mother in the army, it sold out in minutes last time it was on the market! Order now before the big companies shut it down!"

Slime was getting dizzy as House just kept talking and talking.

Tell it to stop, and talk about the quarantine specifically. Also, Vessel 5. Did the humans leave the planet?

Slime had questions, and House was more than excited to generate a response.

> user information or the date.
"You have not finished registration [User Name]! User information is required to bring you the best deals, news and entertainment for your unique lifestyle!"

"Current date is June 12, 2053!"

> who it will contact if somebody broke into it. Are there robot cops?
"Robocop is an animated film franchise from Illumination Studio about a cop who becomes a robot to be better at being a cop. The latest film teams Robocop up with a new partner, K9, a hardnosed tomcat from out in the sticks. This pussy's all business and doesn't take no for an answer. Will she and Robocop be able to put differences aside when the benefit concert is on the line?"

> the quarantine, also Vessel 5
"There have been no new cases of Second Influenza reported in the last year! Quarantine conditions are expected to lift soon."

"With Second Influenza outbreaks spreading across the globe, computer experts have decided the best course is to evacuate the planet! President Branson has contracted the Everyfactory Corp to provide the vessels humanity will need to escape. Franchise opportunities are available for other countries. The project is estimated to complete in Q4 2046!"

Slime was beginning to suspect that House wasn't being entirely accurate. Still, it thought it should ask some more questions, perhaps on behalf of its companions.

> latest population/census data.
"Current statistics suggest a population of between 16 million and six hundred in the tri-state area. These statistics are up to three hundred percent accurate according to the Smartr database!"

> Location of the nearest grocery store. farms too
"There is a Unilever store ten miles east from here. But why would you need to know where it is when you can just have any food you need delivered? Smartr drones are never fail, guaranteed! Current delays will be addressed within the coming weeks, for sure!"

"The closest farm is 50 miles east of the city. Almonds Almonds Almonds is not open for visitors at this time. I could sign you up for the waiting list?"

"Uh that's alright, no thanks." Slime was feeling kind of antsy about this weird house "I think we'll be heading on." It ushered its friends out, slipping back into a more wolf shape.

"Bye!" called House "IF you have more questions just ask any Smartr AI! Don't trust any Budsly, Vizer, Chüm, or Migo brand AI, those guys just make things up!"

------

Slime apologized to its friends as they padded down the road. "I just couldn't take anymore of that weird voice. I hope you got enough to eat."

"I'm good." said Wolf. She was letting Queen's little swarm ride on her back. The ants were chock full of jam and a little woozy.

"We are sated as well." Queen said with the tiniest hiccup. "Though I am eager to find a place for our nest."

"Well what are you looking for in a nest?" asked Slime

"A source of food and nice dry dirt." answered Queen, but then she thought a bit "But, I feel, like I should be looking for something more. Something... bigger."

"That house mentioned some places that might have the 'more' you're looking for. Although I don't trust it. How do you feel about_____?"

A) the farm
B) the factory
C) the library
D) the vessel

That's... not a census.

A.

Of all the places we've heard of, the farm is going to be the best one for an ant colony to settle into. Also the best place to start working on our own controlled ecosystem, if that's what we want to do.

"My future children come first, let us see that food source." said Queen.

Just as House had said there was a farm to the east. Fortunately it was wrong about what kind of farm. Instead of scrawny almonds the rows of trees were heavy with plump oranges.

"Woooow! Look at em all lined up!" Wolf said.

"What? What is it? You know ants can't see very far." Queen asked

"Its those orange fruits, I don't know what they're called. As far as I can see! I've had some before, they're sweet and tasty when they fall off and splat on the ground."

Queen clasped her little front legs together "Oh that sounds wonderful! Does it look safe to start a nest?"

Wolf peered out "I dunno, there's some weird birds going around."

Out in the orchard autonomous carts rolled between the trees, accompanied by flocks of drones. The little quad copters swarmed around each tree in turn; plucking ripe fruit, trimming dead limbs, and spraying things on leaves and roots.

Slime was worried "Eh, I don't think those are birds, guys."

Operational drones? These either must be very durable, or there's someone around to maintain them. See if you can find the main building.
It might be dangerous for ants to be here, because of the pesticides. Still unknown if the slime body would protect them.
