An imp pulls himself out bed and stands in the middle of his room. He can hear the fading thumping of rain drops on his window. Having just woken up in the middle of the night he had sat under his covers trying to return to sleep to no avail. It is 1:15 AM and there’s no chance he’ll be going back to bed now. Through the grog clouding his mind he struggles to think of what to do next, or to even remember what his name is.

What is this imp’s name?

Your name is Cyle Darrops

You are quite enthusiastic about video games, especially those with convoluted almost confusing narratives. When you're not playing video games, or at the very least watching old playthroughs of them, you spend your time attempting to improve your art skills. You're not exactly terrible at drawing, but you could be a whole hell of a lot better. Though you aren't too invested in art you are completely fascinated with knives! You love to collect, restore, and maintain them.

As mentioned before it is 1:15 in the morning and it's unlikely you'll be going back to sleep. Not that it matters too much really as there isn't much you need to wake up for, nothing particularly special is happening in the morning. Still you've got a few hours to kill before the sun rises.

What will you do next?

You retrieve your copy of Arms from your dresser...It's actually only the case, which is fine since you don't have a switch to play it on. Those old human consoles are hard to come by, you play most of your games via emulators.

>Admire posters
Wonderful classics of the human era, you're sure in their time video games were lauded as high art. You can only get your hands on the few your emulator can run. These posters you managed to scavenge yourself, with the help of one of your friends they were restored to near perfect condition.

Killer 7 has to be your favorite by far. It's almost like some form of abstract poetry that no matter how many times you read it it still remains a complete mystery what the hell's actually going on. Luckily it's not poetry or else it would be boring and confusing, it's a video game so it's fun and confusing.

On the opposite spectrum is Let it Die, a game that's pretty straight forward and quite frankly really bad. However it's bad controls, pay to win design, and grindy aspects are all over shadowed by the amount of style that the game oozes. You love Uncle Death so fucking much. Despite being a shit game you're pretty sure your friend who sent you your mushroom plant still plays it, solely because of the games heavy use of mushrooms. You swear she's obsessed with those things.

You hop on your computer and try to open up your emulator to play and...oh GOD DAMMIT. Your emulator isn't working! You keep getting an error back every time you open it up, so much for wasting time playing video games. These pre-Rapture emulators are super spotty but you don't know where you can get a new one. Oh well, guess you need to find something else to waste time with...Hold on, someones sent you a message. You open Blasphemy to see who it is...

Chemical Chalice (C&C) messaged Deuces Daggers (D&D) at 1:20
C&C: You're probably not awake to read this, but I'll leave this as a message for you when you do wake up. I've gotten my digital copy a day early and will be ready to play as soon as you are. It seems the digital release was moved up so now we're all ready to begin soon.
C&C: I still don't understand why you guys didn't buy the digital version seeing as the rest of your games are already digital.

This game C&C is talking about, do you need your emulator to play it? If so, then you've got a problem.

Message C&C and tell them that you woke up just now and can't fall back asleep. Then explain that you tried to play some games, but your emulator isn't working! Ask if they know of a way to help you get it working.

The clock display doesn't sync up correctly most of the time. On top of that it doesn't even display the right date or year. That's what happens when you use an old refurbished computer. Despite that Blasphemy tells the time just find thankfully. You guess it must not work off of your system clock.

>>960232
>What game is she talking about?
One you've been waiting to play with your friends for a while. You didn't expect her's to get here for a while so you didn't think it'd be any time soon. Luckily this game doesn’t rely on any emulation, just your disc reader needs to work.

D&D: you say that but you had to wait until today to get it. besides i like having physical games.
C&C: Oh you ARE awake! Why are you up so late!
D&D: yeah i woke up in the middle of the night and could get back to sleep so i'm wasting time until sunrise
C&C: You're going to be groggy in the morning! Do we need to reschedule when we're going to play so you can get some actual sleep?
D&D: nah i'll be fine. just install yours and i'll go find mine and install it too.
C&C: You've had your copy of the game for longer than me and you still haven't installed it? Knowing you it's probably lost somewhere ridiculous in your apartment, plus after you find it you'll have to install it on that hunk of junk you keep hooked up to a keyboard.
D&D: shut up it'll be fine. besides i remember where i put it it's in the maintenance room of my apartment floor.
C&C: Again, lost somewhere ridiculous.
D&D: it's not a ridiculous place! i stopped by there to check on the heating and left my copy there. Lately it’s been on the fritz and there hasn’t been a maintenance bot up here in a while. It’s fine now but yeah.
C&C: But on a side note, don't make a habit out of waking in the middle of the night. It's a great way to ruin your already messy sleep schedule. G&M could probably make you some sleep tea, and I do have access to a number of sleeping medication.
D&D: it's not that serious yet but thanks anyway. download your game
C&C: On it, retrieve your game from whatever room in your apartment it's in
D&D: On it.

You left a physical copy next to the heater?! That’s a bad thing to do! If the heater gets hot enough, it can melt your game! Or if it’s not melted, it’ll get warped and won’t properly fit into the game console!

Your living room is the cleanest place in your apartment. Not because you're particularly tidy, but because you mostly spend a good portion of time in your room. Part of you's considered moving to a smaller apartment since you live alone, well not totally alone if you count your cat but your worried if you count your cat as a roommate you're one step closer to being a crazy cat imp and you're doing your best to avoid that. Speaking of your cat you haven't seen Cheshire all day, she's probably hiding somewhere.

Oh you know what this is. Somebody's being a BAD CAT and decided to wedge one of your doors shut again! Cheshire did this once with your bedroom door when you forgot to feed her, and again with your bathroom door when she felt bored! Once again you're confined to your house until she feels like unblocking your door. Maybe you can convince her to do it faster if you figure out why she's doing this? >What's with the trophies?
Accolades for surviving many a Live Action Death Game. Devils used to pit lower demons against insurmountable odds all the time for their entertainment. As time went on gladiator arenas and battles to the death had changed into the LADG genre you know and love today! You only ever really play the lower ranked ones so the chance of death isn't as high, though of course that also means the reward isn't as great either. For surviving ,and on one occasion winning, these games you were awarded with meager monetary rewards and these trophies which while shiny are worthless, demons can make gold no problem so these are little more than fancy flat ware. You like filling them with soft drinks and pretending they're worth more than they really are.

Normally you play these LADGs alone, but this newer one promises to allow for cooperative play with friends! You remember why you were so excited about everyone getting it! Now you really want to get out of this apartment and play.

You can't do that! The screw bit of the hinge can only be reached from the other side of the door if the door is opened. Which you cannot do with the door blocked! Besides, you're pretty sure those screws are Philips and not Flathead.

You return to your room to check the message on your computer. It looks like C&C got your drawing.

Chemical Chalice (C&C) messaged Deuces Daggers (D&D) at 1:29

C&C: Cyle! Have you somehow happened upon a piece of art from the old human era? Truly this is a masterpiece of the highest degree.
D&D: would you believe me if i told you that I, CYLE DARROPS, dre that master piece myself?
C&C: Impossible! The dimensions, the form, all of this looks like the work of one of the old masters and if not a bygone human then only one of the most illustrious devil painters!
D&D: i assure this is all me! i have finely tuned my artist skills and am now up there with the greatest painters of old!
C&C: So great you can name a few?
D&D: fuck no, I don't kno anything about human painters.
C&C: Of course not, you're so far above them why bother? I'm sure if you were alive all those years ago your work would be sat right in the Louvre perched atop a pedestal made from the other inferior works of so called art by the hacks of the olden days.
D&D: lol totally, i mean i don't know what a louvre is but it sounds like a lot of art is or used to be there so of course i'd have my masterpiece featured in it.
C&C: I'd love to talk about your shitty mspaint drawing all night but I'm wondering about your progress getting your game?
D&D: uh
D&D: i caught a bit of a snag
C&C: Is it not there?
D&D: i don't know i'm stuck in my apartment
C&C: Is Cheshire in a bad mood again?
D&D: yeah she was but she should be better now, but she's still not letting me out! I'm going to have to wait until she decides to unblock thee door at this rate
C&C: Far be it from me to suggest a method of escaping that could endanger your life but your apartment has windows doesn't it?
D&D: yes, but i don't live on a low floor
C&C: Well then don't climb down, climb up further, or into an adjacent apartment if possible and leave through there.
D&D: i'm still worried about falling!!!
C&C: Then look for a different way out. Or you could twiddle your thumbs until Cheshire says you may leave. I had no idea your life was controled by a cat, does she set a curfew for you when you leave?
D&D: yes but only because she worries very much

Yeah, they're oddly aggressive to one another. You think there's something wrong with their programming or something because they'll start fights at the drop of a hat.

Checking a number of systems on the floor. You managed to hack the login to use it, not the cool movie style of hacking but the lame kind where you guessed a bunch of passwords and looked through sticky notes to find the right information. All of the imps in the city live pretty spread out and most are solitary so it's not too weird. There are only about 1,000 imps and the city's big so there's a lot of empty space.

After answering your friend you return to following the trail of coolant through the halls of the apartment complex. Despite being a large building the complex is pretty easy to navigate even if you haven't been living here your whole life so there's no fear of being lost.

The trail eventually stops at a door with a disturbing amount of coolant pooling underneath it, well it'd be disturbing if you were a robot. You imagine this whole thing would be terrifying had the halls been filled with dead imps. Anyway, you have a feeling your game thief is in there.

So is that what you can do with your blood; deck-based item compression? How much have you tried to screw around with it (i.e. leave one in a normal deck of cards for some poor sap to find and de-compact a large object into their skull when they flip it over; "store" a flurry of punches; use it to "pocket" a fast-moving projectile coming at you, such as a bullet; "store" that same projectile's velocity for an instant ranged attack right back at them; etc.)?

What? No, this is just something you bought. They're fairly common, though you purchased a pretty cheap model.

>How much have you tried to screw around with it
Not much. The cards can rip if you're not careful and you'd have to buy or find more if that happened. Though you did find something else out before, if you bend the card and flick it like so...

SHIT! You knew that would happen, why'd you still do it? There go your trophies all scattered on the goddamn floor. Well you're point's made, flick the card right and launch whatever's inside. It's neat at times but things that are really big or heavy have a good chance of shredding the card they're in. You used to have 8 of these things.

You return home and back to your room to install Echelon.

Oh! It looks like Cheshire brought you a little gift! The remains of a dead robot how thoughtful and totally not inconvenient at all!

Great that chemical smell of the coolants going to soak into your rug, you don't know how Cheshire doesn't hate that smell but she comes home covered in the stuff all the time. You're just glad she's learned not to try and lick it off or else she'll get sick. Anyway you should have some towels in your closet.

You don't really want to store them, you place them on the cabinet instead so they're out of the way.

You open your closet in search for a towel. There are a bunch inside piled on top of your old arcade machine. You planned to fix it up and get a game working on it, but your knowledge of technology wasn't extensive enough to finish the job so now it just sits in your closet. D&D: live action death games? yeah
G&M: Well how do these work? I've heard you talak about them a bit before but most of the time wwhat you say goes over my head.
D&D: well this one's supposed to be different from regular ones because its made for us to play together and a lot of them do different things too. but they always involve combat in some form and of course the threat of death is always there too.
G&M: Well then that doesn't soundd too bad!

You install Echelon onto your computer and message C&C to see her progress on downloading.

Deuces Daggers (D&D) messaged Chemical Chalice (C&C) at 2:41

D&D: hey C&C, you haven't started yet have you?
C&C: I couldn't if I wanted too, the game only allows a session to being when at least two players have logged on. So we cannot start until either you, C&A, or G&M join too.
D&D: well im almost ready, just need the game to download. don't know about the others tho.
C&C: Don't worry, If you and me are going to be the first ones ready then we can begin the session together and then the others can join in later. D&D: y'know these sort of games don't normally have so much set up
C&C: They aren't normally made to be played with other's either. I don't know what prompted a game like this to be made. A new way to torment imps maybe? Have you considered that this game allows us to play together to pit us against one another?
C&C: Follow up question, if that is the case are you prepared to be absolutely "thrashed"? I'll warn you many of the acids I've developed are quite good at eating through the metal of knives.
D&D: that's a bit of a scary thought i wouldn't want to fight any of you guys! not just because we are friends but because you are all crazy and probably would kill me easily
C&C: Have a little faith in yourself Cyle, I probably wouldn't be able to see you coming under the right circumstances. You embody all of the negative properties of an imp, but carry them with such skill that they become strengths instead of weaknesses. When you shirk away into the shadows it is not cowardice but cunning stealth!
D&D: i honestly can't tell if you know what youre doing or not
C&C: Isn't that part of the fun of being my friend?
D&D: no! it sucks!
C&C: Well, hopefully we won't be forced to kill each other in terrible gladiatorial combat. We'll see when your game's done.
D&D: by the way, soon I'll have to send G&M a replacement battery for her laptop, apparently the thing fried at some point so she'll take a little longer to join
C&C: That's okay, hopefully the delivery will be fast. What's your progress by the way?

Once the game is finished installing it connects to your Blasphemy client and lets you find C&C's room

C&C: Okay, now that we've entered a new screen first thing I've noticed immediately is the presence of the team section.
D&D: oh
D&D: yeah that make me a little nervous
C&C: Now my jokes seem a slight bit more in poor taste, Still we don't know what the point of these teams are yet so let's not jump to any conclusions. How would that even work when we are nowhere close to being near each other?
D&D: still I was hoping this would be entirely coop and not teams
C&C: Do you still want to play?
D&D: yeah, we waited this long
C&C: Good. Now, since you and I are the only two ready, for us to get any progress I suggest we pick opposite teams.
D&D: we'll be team captain!
C&C: Yes! That is if your teammate will be willing to listen to you. Speaking of which, who will your partner be?
D&D: shouldn't we wait for them to choose what team they want to be on?
C&C: We could, but traditionally team captains pick their teammates. You can choose first since playing was your idea, but if you decide against picking someone I'll also wait until they choose themselves.
C&C: So what'll it be? Choose G&M or C&A, or let them pick for themselves later on?

D&D: i don't know if i can pick between my friends!
C&C: Would you rather I picked first?
D&D: no no no im still gonna do it, just gotta think is all
C&C: You know if you picked C&A you'd get the benefit of his superior physical capabilities at your disposal. Plus I have on good authority that he considers you his "Best Bro" and as such I'm sure he would follow your orders to the best of his abilities
D&D: is this you tricking me because you know something I dont?
C&C: I am simply offering friendly advice. Well, if you need more time to think I can wait. Remember you can choose G&M, C&A, or let them pick for themselves should they want to.
C&C: Alternatively, you can let me pick my teammate first. Which for you won't be too different from letting them pick themselves.

so from what I'm getting is cyle is sneaky sneaky stab stab type of imp, D&D is an alchemist?, CA is a brawler, and I am drawing a blank on what GM does exactly outside of working with fungi and maybe the dead... druid necromancer combo maybe?

Maybe CA would be best as a partner to act as a distraction while you can sneak behind people to do your thing but without knowing what exactly each person can do I don't have full confidence in either picking a teammate to complement your style or to pick one to deny D&D some synergy.

You definitely do a totally sick back-flip from your room out into the kitchen, but it was off screen so don't ask about it. No to find where you put the battery, you guess you'll check the pantry first...

You open your pantry and move around bags of barbecue chips and other junk foods, along with a few healthy snacks C&A sent you to make sure you keep a balanced diet. You don't have the heart to tell him you haven't even considered opening a bag of vegetable fries, whatever those are...

D&D: seriously i think my patience is starting to run a bit thin with this game and we havent even really started playing it yet D&D: like come on this is going to ruin the table, this is a good table! i found in the alley outback one day in near pristine condition and now some fucking tutti fruti bubblegum pink ectoplasms gonna give me more shit to clean up
C&C: Cyle, you're rambling.
D&D: YEAH BECAUSE IM MAD
D&D: being attacked by genetically monsters is one thing
D&D: but having my home made a mess of with all of this gross shits pissing me off
C&C: Cyle, you have two full trash bags sitting right in your room.
D&D: that is a controlled mess, nothing slimy, greasy, or sticky is in those bags
D&D: THIS is a gooey pile of shit that's going to stain my nice table
C&C: Okay, enough about the table, what's the substance? Can you find any other words to describe it better than just "blob of pink bullshit"?
D&D: uh
D&D: not really
D&D: ykno what? Im just gonna send you a picture
D&D: *attachment sent*
C&C: Yeah, that's pretty gross. Nothing I've seen before either. Can you get some of the slime dripping off of it and mail it to me? I want to get a closer look at it in the lab

D&D: THIS IS SO GROSS
C&C: Cyle, calm down.
D&D: ITS SOME SOSRT OF WEIRD FUCKING SLIMY THING SQUIRMING AROUND IN MY HOUSE I CANT BE CALM
C&C: It looks like it's an embryo of some kind. This is interesting! Do you think I'll get one myself once someone becomes my "Mastermind"?
D&D: honestly? i hope so
D&D: i need confirmation this is something that happens to everyone and not just the game fucking with me
C&C: I probably won't need you to send me a sample then…Still I'd appreciate it if you did!
D&D: hell i could send the whole thing to you i dont want it
C&C: No! You need to keep it in case you having it is important to the game. I doubt this would just be dropped into your house if it wasn't necessary, maybe find a box or a jar or something to put it in to keep it safe? I doubt you have any incubators around but maybe it won't need one?
D&D: how in the hell could this thing be important?
C&C: Who knows? But it's best to err on the side of caution, especially when the person with the most experience on the subject is just as confused as someone with none.

Get a pot or pan from your kitchen along with a spatula or serving spoon. Hold the pot or pan up under the edge of the table and use the spatula or spoon to push the embryo-thing into the pot/pan. Put lid on pot/pan to keep Cheshire out of it.

After that, get cleaning supplies and start to clean up your table before whatever else the game throws at you shows up. ...But first, move the table away from under the point the embryo-thing arrived at. It's possible the game settled on that spot as the "spawn point" for anything else it'll drop in, so you don't want to stand under that or leave the table there while you're cleaning it.

The bridge babies in Death Stranding were human! This isn't! Besides, you have no idea what C&C did to create her blueprint or whatever. You do hope it didn't cause this though, you'd hate to think this was avoidable and you got unlucky.

The Arsenal of Few Things is a useful tool for those with lots of weaponry to manage. It freely holsters any weapons you have with no real upper limit. However, once again, the model you have is a cheap one and the deck only holsters weapons of one type. Since you're only really proficient with wielding knives, it is set to hold knives.

Also the flick and launch flaw that your Deck of Few Things has is not present in your Arsenal of Few Things.

That eventually does the trick. Inside the safe you find two heavy duty mail delivery drones! You card both of them and decide now is a good time to message G&M that her battery is on the way.

Deuces Daggers (D&D) messaged Grave Mycologist (G&M) at 3:11

D&D: G&M, two things
D&D: first your battery should be on its way soon. just got my hands on a couple of mail drones and i'll be sending it your way shortly

G&M: That’s GREAT 0D!
D&D: and second, youre on my team
G&M: Of course I'm on yourr team Cyle you're my friend! I'm on everyone's team all the time!
D&D: yeah but i mean in the game. there are teams and youre on mine
G&M: Oh! Okay! So you and me are againsst C&A and C&C?
D&D: yeah but not really i don't think
D&D: we don't know how the game really works yet or what being on different teams really mean so for now its arbitrary
D&D: were only on teams because the games says we gotta be

G&M: That's good to hear, this would've been a ltot less fun if we had to be supr commpetitive and junk
D&D: yeah that'd suck all of the remaining fun out of this whole deal
D&D: i didnt tell you about the fetus that dropped in my house yet did i?

G&M: WHAT?
D&D: yeah the game dropped a squirming embryo in my house
D&D: C&C thinks it might be important to the game[/color]
G&M: That's a good assumprtion tho, why would an embryo be dropped in your hose other wwise?
D&D: aside from the game makers just wanting to fuck with players who knows? anyway, let me send this drone out
D&D: wait
D&D: okay fuck somethings wrong

G&M: Oh no!
D&D: the signal won't connect on the first floor for some reason
D&D: i think the storms starting to roll in

G&M: Theres a storm?
D&D: yeah but don't worry it's harmless, just means i'll be staying in for today til it passes
D&D: the bigger issue is im going to have to head to the roof to send off these drones

G&M: I can wait a bit longer! But PLEASE try not to get struck by lightning when you're up there!
D&D: no promises, if it looks fun i'll give it a try

Once you've finished messaging G&M C&M decides to message you. It's hard being this popular.

Chemical Chalice (C&C) messaged Deuces Daggers (D&D) at 3:14

C&C: The blueprint has finished loading.
D&D: cool but im not at my computer so i don’t think I can see any changes
C&C: Oh right, you must be in your mailroom. On your way to sending me the embryo sample?
D&D: yeah but i gotta make it to my roof for a better connection
D&D: a storms rolling in and its fucking up the mail drone signals

C&C: If it's too much trouble you don't have to.
D&D: no i have to send G&M her battery anyway so either way i have to go up there
D&D: dont sweat it im used to you being a giant burden

C&C: Fuck you.
D&D: >0o
C&C: Was that too genuine?
D&D: jusst a bit unexpected is all
D&D: is your screen different now that the blueprints donee loading?

C&C: Yes! It looks like it's showing me the VALUE set by the options I picked for the blueprints, and some bars that are all empty. Your laptop probably has stuff more relevant to you.
D&D: yeah ill check on that when i can

Though you thrive when your presence isn't known you can still hold your own with a knife in combat. That being said this guy seems to outweigh you in fighting expertise.
