A evolution quest for all the family!
I always liked these evo-quests so I thought id fire one up and let it spiral into madness as these things are wont to do. Go crazy people!

The planet we shall begin our quest upon, which we shall call Horizon for now, is a roughly earth sized planet that orbits a red dwarf star on the far edge of its habitable zone.

The star provides plenty of heat, but low light, being fuzzy and dim similar to earths sun behind clouds. Another draw back is the stars occasional flare that bathes the surface with ultraviolet radiation, watch out for that :)

The next hurdle for life on Horizon is the planets tidal locked orbit, one side faces the sun at all times, the other is frozen solid.

Because of this life exists in a narrow band on the.. horizon.. here the heat of the sun is enough to melt the ice, but not strong enough to sear life from the surface. Its here in this chemical rich ringed sea that life begins.

if that life wants to conquer the planet it will need to get around the extreme temperatures, sudden bursts of radiation and who knows what else! lets see if they can pull it off!

Our contenders are:
The Vim, a bottom feeding slug like creature
The Fill, a floating jellyfish type invertebrate
The Pim, a simple seaweed like plant.

Oh well, I'm going to look after the Pim because they look cool and I like plants!

My ideia is the Pim evolving into having roots. I'm not the smartest guy around and I'm sure that algae don't have roots but that could be a nice start. The Pim will take a lot of nutrients using the roots, the Vim will eat the Pim and the fill... The fill is going to float around, y'know, like your normal jellyfish baby.

Hmm, anyways for the Fill, since Photosynthesis isnt much of an option, how about Thermosynthesis? Changing internally to absorb heat alongside the usual bacteria and possibly algae if the world supports it, such as from a Hydrothermal Vent?

A year on Horizon is 400 earth days, its gravity is 1.3g, its about 10 light minuets from its star.

Atmosphere is currently thin, composed mostly of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, hydrogen and oxygen are present but in small amounts due to being frozen into water on the cold side.

Tectonic activity is present on all sides, with earth quakes and volcanoes being a hazard to watch out for, the cold side having several thermal vents melting the ice from below.

The vim develop tough patches on their hides in response to the fill's paralyzing stings.

A side effect of this development is the ability to go into shallower water, as the primitive scales give resistance to the solar bombardments.

I can figure something out for that. Here goes.

In a geologically active region on the cold edge of Horizon's habitable band, Fill would feed on bacterial mats situated near thermal vents. A strain of this bacteria developed a resistance to the Fill's digestive juiced and could survive within the digestive cavity. This would lead to a symbiotic relationship between this strain of bacteria and the jellyfish-like organism.

The fill is provided with food from the thermosynthetic bacteria in its digestive cavity. They get warmed up near vents and cooled off in the surrounding waters. The repeated transfer of heat is used to create sugars for the host. The fill will swim toward or away from a heat source as needed for optimal heat transfer.

Simply, they use heating and cooling to produce their own food supply. Location is important due to the presence of two extreme temperatures.

The Pim separate into two species, the rooted Pim and Pim algea. The algae branch becomes smaller and more numerous, forming mats of plant matter near the surface.

The Fill also split in two, becoming Domes and Tubes.

The dome Fill develop a membrane "shell" that keep's them stable and upright, with their stinging tendrils hanging down, increasing their hunt success rate.

The Tubes grow the same membrane, but a small mutation changes it into a gripping "Foot" that they Tubes use to anchor themselves to the sea floor, feeding on floating Pim

The Vim experience a small, subtle and potentially devastating adaptation, splitting into herbivores and carnivores, with the latter growing sharp cutting teeth, biting off the tentacles of Fill as they attempt to ensnare them.

Hello guys, this is my new OC, jazz-hands Vim.

Slightly based in a Velvet Worm, I think having small hook legs will help with eating Pim and fighting against Fill, grubby legs are always good, eh? I'm also thinking if we can change the tides to evolve the Vim to turn into a omnivore species, but I guess this is going for later.

A branch of jazz hands vim revert back to eating algal pim and other microorganisms near the ocean's surface in response to toughening prey.

To better navigate open water, this species developed their legs into primitive flippers.
Vestigial hooks from their predatory ancestry remain under the skin.

The patches along their top side harden and become shiny to reflect the dangerous solar radiation.

These guys also have anuses. I'm not sure if they did before, but they definitely do now :)

Some pim get stranded in shallow pools along the area where the star dips below the horizon.

This is both a blessing and a curse since these specimens don't have to deal with solar flares, but have to survive on the meager light that is reflected by clouds and diffused by the atmosphere.

They turn a deep purple to take advantage of as much light as possible.

These pim can grow on moist rocks above the water now that they don't have to worry about being fried by a stray solar storm.

A small but vital change occurs in the thermal Fill when they develop several fatty patches with weaker membrane, this the jazz vim to tunnel into those areas, encouraging them to stay away from the Fills vital areas in exchange for easy food.

In return the jazz vim attack other predatory Vim when prompted by the host Fill, becoming symbiotic instead of parasitic.

Thermal fill have become Hive Fill

ITS RAINING..RAIN?

The busy too-ing and fro-ing of life on Horizon has had a unforeseen effect. The worlds thin atmosphere has become significantly thicker, creating a insulating layer that spreads out the stars heat more evenly over the surface.

The extreme temp of the "poles remain, but the comfortable middle zone expands massively, with ice melt flooding the band and creating a true ring ocean.

The atmosphere also creates a permanent wind cycle, flowing from the Cool pole to the Hot, then rising and circling back to the Cool.

Essentially this means Horizon has a permanent south to north wind blowing, this causes waves on the sea's surface, and a slow current northwards.

The Fin Vim rapidly take advantage of the new living space, with their digestive tract becoming a simple tube connected to the mouth that functions like a water based jet engine.

The vestigial hooks become the internal skeleton for larger and more manuverable flippers, and the hard patches become a true shell.

They also develop several rudimentary eyes along their body, as nothing selects the ability to see faster then hurtling along a rocky ocean floor...

The hive fill adapts to better accommodate the hive vim, with centralized fat pockets and tubes to connect them.

In return, the hive vim adapt to be better caretakers by attacking bacterial infections, excreting waste that is beneficial to the fill and its thermobacteria, and even killing their host if it threatens to become a vector for disease to other hive fill.

A type of microorganism that feeds on dead purple algal pim evolves.
It leaves behind a crusty buildup as waste which the living pim then grows on top of.

Through the eons these two evolve into an organism not too dissimilar to lichen fond on Earth.

This pim lichen takes advantage of the developing atmosphere to spread on rocks up to 5 meters from the shore, so it is well on its way to becoming the first truly terrestrial species on Horizon

Responding to the grazing the Pim Lichen develop a outer casing of minerals, growing a metallic "Bark" around itself that also raises the lichen from the ground allowing it to angle and protect itself rather then relying on the rocks.

Life is nice for the Hive Fill, they get bigger and bigger and slightly fatter than the other types of Fill to get more and more Hive Vim, new tubes are formed and fatty patches make this symbiotic relationship as one of the only ones in this planet. While now the Hive Fill are slightly slower, they might be feared a bit.

Pim Lichen have big dreams and big jobs to do and one of theses dreams? Traveling the world.

Of course they're too dumb to actually have any dream, but this don't stop them making small fragile bags with tiny Pim Lichen inside that will fall off and travel throught the winds, it might lead to death throught entering in a not habitable place or being eat by Jazz Vims, yet, the ones that have the right conditions will help the Pim conquer the whole planet and grow up.

Jazz Vims meanwhile evolved their mouths to cope with the bark that the Pim Lichen does naturally, trying to ignore the bark to get near the Lichen.

Also Pim evolve three small sacks full of water that they can throw against predators and the Lichen. Theses sacks are visible and the bigger they are, the healthier the Jazz Vim is.

A subset of rooted Pim begin growing on the damp northern bank, adjusting to the lack of water and radiation by growing shorter with longer roots.

The roots develop tuber like growths that store the majority of water and sugar produced by the leaf, this allows the plant to survive droughts and regrow its leaf on the occasions the solar radiation sears it to a crisp.

The star flares up with a particularly strong burst of ultraviolet radiation, frying the surface with its lethal waves, several species now face extreme difficulty.

The Pim lichen is devastated, be coming severely reduced in numbers. the few surviving Pim lichens owe their existence to a random mutation that caused their lower membranes to be saturated in water and spongy.

When the burst hit the sponge contracted as it lost water, drawing the top most layer down the metallic tube, shielding it from the worst of the blast.

A few generation later and the reaction has become a deliberate response mechanism, with the Pim pulling itself back into its shell to avoid the solar bursts and grazers.

The Pim algae is likewise blasted, with only the tougher, less digestible algae surviving to spread into the new space. Creatures who feed on the algae will find it harder to eat from now on.

The baseline Vim slug discover that the northerly current has formed a thick band of rotting matter on the northern shore, here they find plentiful food and shelter, rapidly populating the entire northern shore.

The Pim Algae Grow hooked "hairs" on their thickened membranes, which cause them to stick together in gooey floating colonies. Near the surface, the top layers of algae will die and create a woody, protective, translucent "Shell". Pim Algea stuck in the central mass of larger colonies that die from malnutrition or other factors also leave behind these thickened shells. As the process is repeated over time this creates a soft woody superstructure.

As the Algal Pim naturally gravitate toward optimal conditions, in certain areas these colonies can get truly massive.

The Trifill are distinguished from ordinary Fill by their tripled number of limbs, which gives them triple the amount of poisonous stingers to defend and attack with. Some Trifill have started using their large amount of limbs to crudely grab their food and shove it in their mouths, speeding up the feeding process.
