Currently, you are Bruliod, a smaller than Plancton creature that usually travel around separately and mate whenever they run into each other. Found close to the surface of the water.
Sparse population is making mating less and less likely which reduces the rate of evolution.

Suggest a trait to evolve (within the bounds of reason)

Poisonous skin to increase survival chances

Develop "Advanced Senses" to stimulate brain growth from natural selection of the smartest Bruliods! That is, the ones who know how to use what they see coming.

Ability to emit a subvocal resonance by cell vibration.

Ideally at a spectrum unique to Bruliods

High concentrations of bruliod appear as milky patches on the surface of the water attracting predators such as the Spoon-billed Markeet.

Let's develop a neurotoxin in our livers. Like a pufferfish, it will be extremely lethal despite our small size.

Better yet, develop mating pheromones and a resistance to Markeet intestinal fluids, and some nonlethal burrowing techniques. Let's see if we can get the Bruliods to NEST IN THEIR YOUNG.

step one, body becomes highly resistant to acid, this results in bruliod that can occasionally survive the churning guts of the markeets and come out in the poop. not very often due to lack of other adaptions, but possible if lucky. this also allows some genetic dispersal as bruliods from one colony cluster can interact with much further clusters then they could normally swim.

Bruliod has evolved an acid resistant dermis. Furthermore, primarily resides in rock pools on the coast of continant 4. Subsiquenly has had to evolve better eyesight and larger mouths.
Most scientists agree that this transition is great enough to be considered a new species: Murloid.
Markeets no longer attack Murliod as there is little to no nutritional output and have subsequently gone extinct

I would discourage poison or acid because it generally removes both prey and predators from your vecinity.

Murlod increases in speed and becomes an opportunistic carnivore. Subsequently, they have increased in size and now eats Rock Minnow aswell as small plant matter.

There's gotta be decaying matter outside the pools, too...

If only we could navigate outside enough to drag it back.
Maybe we could get a pair of webbed feet or something.
