I’m almost there. I’m inside friendly lands, it looks like my lord surely took care of his territory in my absence. Now, After many fights, I’m back to serve him. Although I’m a somewhat late for the twin’s birthday… I had sworn to be with my lord’s family every time wherever they go, and even if it was on my lord’s command, I’m still bothered for that fact.

Every step gets me closer to my destiny, until I’m afraid that I can’t do another one without getting into trouble.

???: Hold Right There!

A bandit, a bounty hunter or someone chasing me for my past? It doesn't matter much; my spear was ready even before he talked. There is no point on taking risks.

???: I Got you now! Finally I’ll have my revenge. You will regret ever killing my father, you filthy pig!

…Perhaps his revenge would be more meaningful if I knew who he is, or who his father was… Anyway, He shouldn’t be a threat, his equipment is of good quality, and he has Training, yet he seems stubborn and lacking of experience, so I’m pretty sure I can handle him on my own.

Now… How should I approach this situation? I would like to not waste my time with him, but it seems unavoidable.

Tell him that before you fight, he should at least be sure he has the right man, and that you remember what you did to deserve this. Ask him to describe his father for you, and the circumstances of his death.

I might as well do him a favor.

Santios: I’m Afraid I don’t know your name, let alone your father’s. Allow me to introduce myself, As you may have the wrong person: I’m Santios, “Adalid” of my lord, Toristan, ruler of these lands.

Cert: I’m Cert, and I do know you, and I don’t have the wrong person.

Santios: Then my apologies, but I have no memory of your name. Who was your father? If we are to fight, I would like to know the reason behind your aggression.

Cert: You humiliated my father one year ago, before killing him, in the Castle of the Giant, My father was Cerílian

Ah… Now I remember… I didn’t knew he had a son though.

Santios: It was a duel that he accepted, my lord and yours accepted to avoid needless bloodshed in a duel. It was I against him… For whatever it helps, He was a good fighter.

Cert: I don’t care about what you say, he was humiliated in front of everyone, and my family’s name stained for that defeat. Now I shall avenge him. Defend yourself!

Well, if that worked for something, It was for him to be even more impatient.

I parry his lance’s thrust and make sure it disrupts his shield movement, and then prepare myself for a strike. He seeing this tries to cover his arm with his shield, yet his arm wasn’t my target, I hit him with the other end of my spear on his head.

It seems to have disoriented him. I could have CUT HIS THROAT … gone for a strike on his neck to end this quick, but I guess I was slow…

He goes back to his rather common stance. This time he tries a thrust, but clearly with the intention of using his shield in a more offensive manner. I parry his lance, this time without blocking his shield movement, and as soon as he raises it, I get too close for it to be effective, and then I break his balance.

>>721613
I don’t really have my foot on his neck, but I guess a pointy spear should suffice.

Cert: … I’ve lost…

Santios: You would still need more experience if you wanted to defeat me.

He doesn’t necessarily seem scared… Perhaps he is more disappointed than afraid of A SLOW death?

Cert: …Fine, End this now.

What should I do…? Should I leave him alive and TORTURE HIM … leave him go? Or Should I MURDER HIM …End this quickly? ...Or are there NO other options?

Only kill him if it will end the bad blood between you and his family. You don't want to have your travels continually disrupted by more of his kin. That should be the priority. Heck, ask him if there is any other way to settle things between you and his family.

Santios: Are there any other relatives to you of whom I should be aware of?

Cert: No, I was my father’s only son… My mother still lives, but I’m sure she won’t give you any trouble…

So, if everything is as he says, then I wouldn’t receive further interruptions from his family if I decided to end him... ...sl...ow...ly...

>>721726
Santios: Does your mother even know you are here?

Cert: She probably knows. I didn’t tell her about this, but she probably is smart enough to find out on her own...

Santios: Where did she live? Shall you die here; the least I could do is give her compensation...

Cert: ... She lives near the Castle of the Giant... Working on an INN called “The Giant’s stop”... She will probably come out if they say my name...

Good.

Santios: now, isn’t there another way?

Cert: ...What do you mean?

Santios: Shall I choose to let you live; Is there a way to avoid further confrontations between us because of your thirst for revenge?

... He seems rather surprised by that.

Cert: ... By the lord! Do you really want to help?! You don’t hate me even after I tried to kill you?!

Santios: I will only hate those who threaten my lord or his family. You only attacked in order to restore your honour.

Cert: ... Well, I thought that If I failed to do this you would have killed me without hesitation... I really don’t know what I would do now...

Well, We have something in common now...

I have beaten him without spilling blood, which means I have nothing to clean, and I have no need of showing everyone that I have beaten him. In fact, if someone feels proud of defeating someone weaker than themselves, he is the one that should be ashamed. If I marked him, more than a mark of pride, it would be a mark of shame, and I’m pretty sure he learnt his lesson.

Also, I would like to not lose any more time with this.

>>721820
Santios: If you swear to not come back to me with ill intentions, you are free to go...

Cert: ...I swear, thank you...

Santios: ... If your shame is too great to bear, you may come back and we will fight in a duel, Non-lethal, but you still need more experience and training if you want to stand a chance against me. Farewell.

Cert: ... I will tell my mother about this, not with shame... Perhaps I will be able repay your mercy someday.

...Perhaps....

My journey continues without any further interruptions, which is nice, I already wasted a lot of time. I met one or two caravans travelling through the road, but I hear no interesting news, mostly about the prices of food and other goods, others were probably just rumours.

Finally, I get to more paved roads, which means I’m getting close. After two farms and another town, I finally arrive.

Guard: OH! Welcome Home, my lord!

... I don’t know this guard, and I knew every guard on this palace.

Santios: ... Excuse me, How do you know who I am?

Guard: The captain told me about you, if by any chance you came back during my round. It’s an honour to meet you.

Santios: I see. My apologizes for being rude. You were hired during my absence, correct?

Guard: I would think so, my lord.

Santios: I’m not a lord. Just call me “sir” if you wish. How many other guards were hired while I was out?

Guard: I think we were around 20, sir.

Santios: Good. Now I msut go to see Lord Tristan, farewell

Guard: Ah m-emm... Sir! Lord Toristan isn’t here at this moment.

Santios: ...? And where is he?

Guard: He, with his fiancée and the twins and accompanied with the captain and some guards, went out to camp, they should be coming back in some hours, sir.

Santios: ... Alright, thanks soldier, you may go back to your duties.

Guard: Yes, Sir.

Hmm... Well, what should I do now? I could go to the stables and get a mount to try to arrive where my lord is, yet that could be rude as they probably aren’t expecting another guest. I could go to the training grounds and practice some more, there is never enough training. I could also go to the barracks, perhaps meet the new guards. There is also a bath which I could make the servants prepare, a garden where I could just wander around, a main hall where dinner is served, next to the kitchen, and a big etcetera. Or I could just wander aimlessly like my lord tends to do sometimes.

They ... They seem to appear randomly... When I'm angry, disappointed, annoyed... I was very disappointed for having to spent time with that warrior while I was doing something else, although it has been a long time since the last time it happened.

Those... “Impulses” are just a mere residue of my shameful past... I have been able to control them, yet when they come back, I feel them... like they are crawling on my back and Whispering to my ear. I can’t let them win; I’m no longer what they want me to be...

My paranoia strikes again, yet it's better to be sure.

Santios: how was Stratos doing?

Guard: The captain? He was doing fine, sir.

Well, he sounded calm, and didn’t hesitate.

Santios: Alright, thanks. I will leave you to your duties then.

Guard: Of course sir.

I enter the palace, and soon after every suspicion about an ambush are discarded at the sight of other guards and servants that I do know and trust. Then I head towards the barracks, I don’t expect to meet all the new guards, but some of them are sure to be around.

I get to the courtyard near the barracks, where I find 4, no 5 new guards resting and talking to each other, I was about to talk until one of them notices my presence.

Guard 4: Emm... Excuse me mister... Who are you?

Santios: I’m Santios, the...

Guard 1: Oh Shit!

Suddenly, he gets up, followed by all of the others. They struggle a bit, trying to find their helmets, shields and spears, and then forming up in a line.

Guard 1: Ready for duty, Sir!

Guard 2: Dude! Your spear, My Feet!

Guard 3: Sorry. Ready and willing, sir!

Guard 4: … I thought he was larger…

Guard 5: …

Well, they seem Eager at least.

Author: The guards are still numbered as they were in the last update.

Santios: Well, I would like to know your names.

Rob (Guard 1): My name is Rob, Sir!

Zeit (Guard 2): I- I’m Zeit sir.

Amirr (guard 3): I’m called Amirr!

Sand (guard 4): M-my name is Sand

Kelo (Guard 5): ... My name is Kelo.

Sand: Emm, sir... Are you really the Santios? Adalid of lord Toristan?

Santios: Yes, is there something wrong?

Sand: Well... You look... less intimidating than what we were told...

Rob: Silen-.

Amirr: He doesn’t look intimidating at all!

Zeit: I thought that as soon as you saw us just sitting here you were going to punish us...

Rob: ... Well... The other guards told us that at least...

Kelo: ...

...Am I really intimidating for those who know me, or they just fell victim of a prank...?

Sand: Well, I’m relieved actually....

Kelo: ... I’m kind of disappointed... I expected a powerful warrior; you don’t really look that strong.

Rob: Kelo!

Kelo remains silent... I don’t really feel offended by what he said, it’s not my intent to look strong, but even so, he may do well on watching his tongue, I will not tolerate insults to my lord, nor will many others.

Santios: So, when does your round begin?

Rob: We weren’t assigned any round, sir. The captain gave us orders to follow your lead.

Santios: To follow my lead? Why?

Amirr: I think it was ordered by Lord Toristan, sir.

Rob: what? How do you know?

Sand: We... listened to them

Santios: ... You spied on them?

Amirr: I-It wasn’t on purpose!

... They don't seem to be lying... That’s strange; normally every guard is under the captain’s command, they would obey my orders, and those would have priority, but I never had people under my direct command... Makes me wonder why my lord did that...

>>722710
Santios: Then what about the crests on your shields?

Rob: The captain said that you may want us to have a difference to other guards in order to recognise us, so he told us to wait before painting our shields.

Well, I rarely used the family’s crest where it could be seen, because I rarely use shields or anything else that could hold it.

I will have to ask this to the Captain and Lord Toristan about this... Meanwhile, what should I do with these guards...? ... Actually... I Think I’m somewhat hungry... I hurried after my encounter with that other warrior, not stopping even for eating, yet I'm interested in seeing how these guards are trained, and what Should I expect from them.

Alright, let us see what they can do.

Santios: Since you are under my orders, I would like to see how well you are in a fight. We will head to the training grounds.

Zeit: E-Excuse me sir but... Didn’t you just arrive recently? Shouldn’t you take some rest?

Santios: I can rest later, after the training.

They follow me in line; the Training grounds are pretty much next to the barracks so it isn’t a long trip. Once we arrive there, we leave must of our weapons aside and grab the training gear.

Santios: Alright, Are you all ready?

Rob: Sir... Are you going to have all of us fight you at the same time?

Santios: Yes, It will be faster that way.

Amirr: That doesn’t sound...

Santios: Alright, The rules are: no strikes towards the Face. First strike to the legs or body means you are out, crawl or walk out of the fight zone in order to avoid getting more hurt.

Zeit: But, 5 against 1?

Santios: Yes, Shall we start? Remember, Do your best.

They seem unwilling at first, even Kelo. But they seem to change their mind about it when I strike first. They dodge it, but it wasn’t my intention to hit them, not yet.

They start preparing themselves. But the Fight has already started. Rob seems to be trying to organize them, but I won’t let that happen.

He blocks my attack, although somewhat rushed.

Rob: Fuck!

Zeit: I’m on it!

Santios: Don’t Talk! Act!

I block his strike, His defence crumbled, but I cannot just take him out yet. I back off, and strike Amirr, Who was trying to get on my back, while Sand strikes me from my right. Block all of them, and on the retreat again. Kelo, who was most away from the others, tries to stop me; I already got enough space between me and the others, so I get the chance to fight him, before having to backing off again.

Now all of them are on guard and ready. Now it begins.

This time, they are the ones who will strike first. Rob tries again to organize them, but it seems that only Sand and Zeit follow his orders.

Amirr keeps trying to sneak up behind me, he clearly has some ideas but, he lacks of good reactions when plans go wrong! One less to worry about. We will need to work on his defence.

I face Rob and the two others that are getting closer. I avoid their confrontation, as Kelo was about to strike me from behind. I put Kelo between the trio and me, and proceed to hit him again in the knee, while avoiding two strikes directed at me. He seemed to be very strong, yet lacking of technique and experience, summed with his over-confidence, ended up in his defeat.

Only Three left, they are backing off. Rob seems to be the one doing the defence; meanwhile the other two are using their reach to try to attack me. A very basic formation, Rob clearly knows what his trying to do, yet I want to see how the other two will react when their leader falls.

I use their numbers against them. Making their staves block each other, and proceed to get Rob, who with his steady defence, was incapable of reacting to that attack fast enough.

The two remaining back off, and are right now one on each side. Sand seems scared, for some reason, while Zeit seems to only be stressed.

My hunger and tiredness is starting to slow me, But this hasn’t ended. I see that somehow Zeit and Sand have come to an understanding. They decide to strike at the same time from both directions.

Sand is more dubious about attacking me, while Zeit seems to be more solid and cold, even though it’s an act. I prepare myself to defend against the strike, but it seems that I have underestimated my tiredness though. I can defend myself from Sand attack, yet I was unable to stop Zeit’s. Knowing this I tried to hurry to strike him, but we ended in a draw...

Santios: Good move.

Zeit: huh... thanks...

Sand: Y-you made it?

Rob: Hah! At least you got a draw.

Amirr: HA! I can’t believe it; you, of everyone, was the one who got closer! Not even Kelo could.

Kelo: ... You were just lucky...

Santios: Congratulations. Now, I’m pretty sure everyone is tired; you all may rest for now, I will give you more training later. I going have to eat something before I starve, if you want to come with me, feel free to do so.

Amirr: wait... You were tired and hungry this whole time?

Santios: It was a long travel, that’s why I didn’t want this to last long.

We move towards the dining hall, they have almost finished the preparations for the Third food of the day. I take some fruits to eat a something, but not enough to satisfy my hunger, I don’t want to offend the cooks by not eating anything once the food is served. I meet some servants and other guards; I think everyone knows that I’m here already.

My lord considers that every meal is important, I’m sure he is already on the way here; I wonder how Varo and Vero are doing.

Varo and Vero are my lord’s twin sons. As it is my duty to protect and follow my lord, it’s also my duty to protect them.

I have always been around and they know me very well. They went as far as calling me “uncle” even though we are not related, I don’t understand why they do that, but I have never asked them. They are always trying to stay together, and they are always helping each other.

Varo was born with eyes of different colour, I don’t know how the scholar called it, some say that those are capable of seeing the future, but I wouldn’t believe what people says. Varo is weak physically... and very susceptible to diseases, which used to make me keep an eye for him. I know they took him because he wouldn’t lost a camp trip for nothing, and he is smart enough to keeping himself safe, most of the time at least. I tried to teach him some combat, but it’s proving to be hard, as he is quite fragile, even if I somehow managed to teach him everything I know, I don’t see him winning any fight by speed or strength, I hope he doesn’t have to.... Despite all of that, he is very energetic, not really restless, but he is willing to help in any ways he can.

Vero on the other hand, is very strong and is always trying to prove himself. He also gets himself and his brother in trouble, but never with ill intent. I imagine him trying, and failing, to convince Varo to stay in here, and, right now, taking more care on him that of his own. He is very good on martial arts, I taught him combat and he even adapts himself quite well. I feel like with time, he could become even stronger than me... and whatever it’s on my mind too, shall it come back. He’s always worrying about his brother too, he doesn’t say it, but you can see him worry every time Varo gets excited about something, which isn’t very rare, yet they get along just fine.

They leave and, before I could say anything, the kids start talking.

Varo: Uncle! Y saw a Blue bird; Mom says it’s of good luck.

Vero: And dad taught us about how to ride a Lagiar, If one decides that one of us will be their rider.

Varo: But... I don’t think I could ride one though... Even father’s one isn’t very comfortable with me.

Vero: I don’t understand him though; He wouldn’t mind me at all...

Santios: Lagiars are very strange on their behaviour.

Vero: That’s right. You don’t have one either, right?

Varo: ... Do you think one will accept me as their rider?

Lagiars aren’t comfortable with me either, but that’s fine, if it were for me, I would stay away from them too, but at least it seems that the ones in the stable and I have an agreement; as long as their rider is around they will get me anywhere, otherwise I mustn’t bother them.

... After trying to communicate with my lord, he looks back at me, and shrugs while smiling... I guess I’m on my own in this one... I will try to do my best to make it more likeable for a kid...

Santios: Alright. I think we have enough time for this, so listen well. It was a many years ago and I don’t remember all the details, so excuse me if something seems misplaced

“I woke up in a cavern... It was mostly pitch black with the exception of the entrance, which seemed to be far from where I was, where I could see some sunlight.

Not far from where I was, there was a person... If we could call it that way, He was evil in many ways. I was one of the many that went after him, yet even if he lacked of the skill and training that many warriors had, he was fast, cunning and deceptive... He defeated me, as so he did with many others, yet for some reason I was left alive... I never discovered why...“

... The Truth is... And it shames me to remember it... It was me... Well... Not really me... We could say that “I” didn’t exist at that time... It was just a savage, a monster, who wouldn’t care for anything else but itself... Killing people like they were animals... Torturing, enjoying the pain it was causing, the blood it was spilling... Every new victim was a new possibility... I don’t remember much of it... I don’t remember how long it has done that, how many were killed... Or if it even had a reason to do all of that... Perhaps I’m afraid of remembering...

“I tried to find a way out, but every time I looked at him, he seemed passive... Like waiting for something. Holding to his sword, not looking at the entrance of the cave... But looking at the darkness. Before I could do anything you father appeared coming from outside, still using his twin swords that you know that he always carries wherever he goes. He gave a warning to this man... But he didn’t listened. I would have tried to do anything, but I was weak, and I would lie if I didn’t say I wasn’t afraid... “

Truth be told... I don’t remember why I was there in that cave. I remember there were a lot of dead bodies... Probably “My” victims... Sometimes whole bodies.... Other times, only severed limbs... It smelled to blood and death, for it, it was delicious.... My lord did give a warning, but it could see in his eyes the fear... The entire cave was surrounded with soldiers; I don’t know what madness drove my Lord to go in alone. It knew it was its end and a trapped beast draws the strength even from where it can’t get it...

“Your father was a very strong warrior, but he was alone, and fighting in the darkness of that cave. That man knew that and used it to his advantage. Attacking unexpectedly, He was being able to slowly push away, or get closer, to your father as he seemed fit... I couldn’t do anything more than watch and see how another warrior felled before him... As your father was perfectly capable of defending himself from any normal attacks, yet he found himself in trouble against the tricks and deceives from his opponent...”

...Not Only that... it didn’t even care about its wellbeing... It knew it was going to die, but some more moments of pain and blood spill was far more tempting than just defeating his enemy... It liked that game. Using its superior speed and precision, he could strike with everything, sword, fists.... and teeth... It broke through my lord’s defences, and bit his arm... I think he still has that scar. It fought against many others who tried to use two weapons... his opponent would think that he is exposed so he will strike with his free hand, but it would strike faster with its sword and end the fight, but not the life. Luckily, my Lord found out about this, somehow, and instead of attacking he stopped its strike, and then he strikes it with the hilt of his sword, painfully freeing himself from its maw...

“Every time Your father escaped from one of his tricks, that man seemed to have another up his sleeve, and instead of getting tired, he seemed to get even more faster as the fight lasted... and Even when your father could successfully strike back and get him, it didn’t seemed to do much... “

“He was fighting bravely, yet He wasn’t doing progress, and was losing ground. I was afraid He wasn’t going to win... Yet he had many chances to run away, and refused to do so... I didn’t know what he was thinking... Meanwhile that man continued to strike and strike relentlessly, and your father was barely being capable of defending himself...”

It enjoyed that... It saw my lord’s eyes, even through the darkness and saw despair; it wanted more of it... Perhaps he would save it, his screams and pain could scare the other ones off, and it could escape unpunished...

“... Until a small light of hope appears... between the rocks at top of the cave, a small, almost unnoticeable, ray of sunlight gets trough... Your father as soon as he saw it reflected it with his sword towards that man’s eyes... He managed to blind him for some time, not a lot, but enough. That man was now on the defensive, having to stop your father’s attacks, and still trying to adapt his eyesight to the darkness of the cave. Not before too long, that man fell defeated, and your father was victorious. “

Perhaps it sounds very poetic, but it was the truth. It didn’t notice that ray of light, while my lord did. Shortly after, it was blinded, and then every attempt of defending itself was futile... And now it comes to the part not even I understand...

“... After that... He went in, and rescued me, He wasn’t that badly wounded as I expected him to be, yet he was still hurt. Between the two of us, we managed to get out of that cave. He saved my life, and since that day, I sworn to follow him and protect him and his people. Giving my life if needed...”

... He spared me... I didn’t know why... It didn’t knew why... he was wounded... It still had the taste of his blood in its mouth... It would threaten him, insult him, even try to attack him again but he wouldn’t kill it... Even I consider that the correct choice would have been killing it... even if I would have never existed if that happened... He came out of the cave... The soldiers seemed surprised to seeing him alive... They didn’t recognise this body... As they knew not what exactly they were fighting against, only that it was a murderer... They thought I was just a survivor, and that the murderer was death inside the cave, otherwise my lord wouldn’t be alive...

... Toristan allowed me to exist, and I thank him for that. I still don’t know what madness drove him to let it live, and when I asked him about it, he wouldn’t answer me... Perhaps I should insist in the question, but the last thing I want is to bother him...

I have done a lot of damage to a lot of people... The only thing I can do right now is try to pay my debt with my lord, and try to fix things right as much as I can, yet this world isn’t pacifist... Wars rage on, murderers are still around... I will do as best as I can. If there’s a heaven or hell, as the people says, I will probably go to hell, no matter what I do, But that’s fine, that’s how it should work after all...

Varo: ... Thank you for telling us the story, uncle...

Vero: I wonder why dad didn’t want to tell us about it...

Santios: Neither I do, Perhaps he didn’t want for you to do reckless things as he did back then. Please, don’t do something like that, if you know there is trouble, ask for my help, alright?

Varo: Yes Uncle, don’t worry, I will keep Vero out of trouble.

Vero: What?! If there is someone who is reckless here it is you!

Santios: Perhaps we should start moving, or they will begin without us.

Varo and Vero: Oh Yes, Sorry uncle.

Well... That went well, right? We move inside the dining hall, I will have to report to my lord, and then perhaps I will have some rest of my travels.

[You may pick who to follow now: Varo, Vero or one of the five guardsmen that Santios has under his command]
