“Good morning, Mayor Guts!”

I wish she’d stop calling me that.

“In Meatcube, it’s Tuesday, September 15th, and the current time is 2:58 p.m. Well then, shall we get started?”

“.....”

“Wonderful. Let me get you set up …”

Her voice echoes in the dark space. Guts waits.

“OK, all set. Oh, and that’s right...”

It’s too hot for September. Guts locks his door behind him and steps out onto the rickety wooden walkway in front of his house.

>kill isabelle
I do have an axe … but if I kill Isabelle, I don’t know what would happen. Everything might fall to pieces. Like, literally. And even if not that, things will fall to pieces on a bureaucratic level. She does everything around here.

>does anyone even care about tex
I mean … I do. He’s my best friend.

>save tex
I don’t think I can. Every time Isabelle’s told me someone was going to die, they do, like clockwork. Even if I trick her into thinking her clock is wrong … like I did last year. I can try to go back, but they die anyway, like time is still moving forward.

Maybe, like she said, all I can do is say goodbye.

Guts thinks, briefly, about stopping by Town Hall and needling Isabelle for information - but he’s tried before, and she never gives him anything beyond what she shares at the beginning of the day. Instead, he decides to walk to Tex’s house.

It’s on the southern edge of Meatcube, right on the cliff, just like his. The southeastern corner of town - where Guts lives - is packed, with Town Hall, the thrift store, the coffee shop, and the town square all in the same stretch of land. The western half, where Tex lives, is quieter, and villager’s homes are dotted out in a more leisurely way than the claustrophobic crunch of Guts’ corner of the woods.

As he walks, an eye always out for the glimmer of insect wings, Guts thinks about the other residents of town. Sharing his side of town, there’s Cube, a penguin with a pronounced stutter; and north, by the river, another human girl, Babette. Most everyone else lives west of the river - Dotty and Tiffany, inseparable rabbits; Genji, another rabbit who keeps more to himself; Lucky, a dog whose name has always struck Guts as a clear misnomer; Zell, the smooth-talking blackbuck who Guts wishes would leave him alone; Annalisa, the soft-spoken anteater who works at the coffee shop; Agnes and Mathilda, both of whom he’s never really talked to; and the final human resident of the town, Sage, whose sprawling garden does little to combat the heavy stench of the durian trees that overrun Meatcube. People come and go, but these are the ones who seem to be sticking around - or at least, for now. Guts thought Tex was going to stick around, too.

There aren’t any bugs that catch Guts’ eye on the way over. He guesses he’ll have to wait til evening, when the bell crickets come out.

He knocks once on Tex’s door - a pleasantry, at this point - before putting his net away and stepping inside.

The room is cleared out, everything shoved into boxes and lined up against the walls. Tex looks up as the door closes behind Guts, and gives him a tired smile.

“Hey, picante.”

“Isabelle let you know?”

“Yeah. This morning.” He sighs and sits down on one of the boxes, gesturing vaguely. “I’d offer you a drink, but …”

“It’s okay.” Guts crosses the room to stand by him, tugging idly at the hem of his skirt. The art of conversation has never come naturally to him - he’s always just let Tex fill the silences with whimsical rambling and unbidden compliments, which he was always happy to do. It made them a good team.

“You know, I was thinking,” Tex says, and Guts is already thinking No, no, no, “Do you want my jacket?”

Guts says nothing. Tex is already standing again, shrugging the letterman jacket off his shoulders. “Something to remember me by, right, picante? I mean, we still have the rest of the day to spend together and make some really good best buddy memories, but …”

Stop it. Don’t say shit like that.

Guts bites his lip and looks away. His throat hurts. There’s so many things he can’t make himself say, so he thinks them as fiercely as he can. Don’t give me your stuff. That’s like giving up. Don’t talk about making memories, like I’m gonna forget you if we don’t.

Tex’s smile falters, and he tilts his head, looking up at Guts’ slowly reddening face. “Hey? Come on, don’t give me the cold shoulder. Everything okay, picante?”

Guts tried kissing Tex once, last summer, on the beach after the line on his fishing rod broke. It was weird, and something they decided not to do again, and not just because of the beak.

Tex pushes the jacket back into his hands, and this time Guts takes it, and when Tex smiles at him he bursts into tears.

“No, it’s not okay,” he manages, and his voice is brittle, “nothing’s okay - you’re my best friend and you’re gonna die - can’t we do something? W-We can - hide you, or get on the train - we can run away -”

Tex is rubbing his back in slow circles. “You know that’s not how it works, pal. At six in the morning, everything resets, and whatever’s supposed to happen will happen. You’ll wake up back in your house, and I … well, I won’t.”

Guts can’t do anything but hiccup into his hands. Tex sighs and leans his head against the mayor’s shoulder. “It’s not Isabelle’s fault or anybody else’s. When your time is up, it’s up.”

He lets Guts sniffle and sob for a little longer, then gives him a firm pat on the back. “Hey, but come on, let’s not waste time, right, picante? There’s a lot of stuff we could do! We could go down to the beach and fish a bit - or we could go back to your place and listen to CDs! You got that new K.K. single, right? We can stay up all night, straight through to six, and we won’t waste a minute of it. We just gotta decide what we want to do!”

Guts has finally stopped crying. "Let's go fishing," he says.

The walk to the beach is so short from Tex's place. The days are getting shorter, but the sun is still high in the sky. It's one of the only times Guts has ever wished the sun would set slowly.

They sit on the beach and fish one-handed so they can clasp their free hands together. It's easy because nothing's biting.

Dread is puddling in the pit of Guts' stomach, heavy and damp, because every time he looks down, the shadows stretching away from their hands are a little longer. Normally he likes how quiet Tex can be, how even despite how chatty he is he never feels the need to force Guts to talk, but right now that silence feels stifling.
