Aurelius: "Actually I think will."

Emperor Hadrian: "Excellent, I shall have the litter bearers informed of where to take you. And I understand that you have been to the slave market this afternoon and made a few purchases?"

Aurelius: "Yes four of them."

Emperor Hadrian: "Ah, then you should have them get to work on preparing the home for when you return from the banquet tonight."

Aurelius: "Yes my thoughts exactly. After all, idle hands make bad servants."

Emperor Hadrian: "Indeed. Then I shall see you tonight at the banquet. Farewell Aurelius."

Aurelius: "Until we meet again, Emperor Hadrian."

As we departed from the Coliseum I still hear the people chanting both Caesar and Aurelius at the same time. The further we get from the Coliseum the less the chanting I hear, but it is nonetheless encouraging to know that I am so openly accepted by Rome and her people. Now I just got to make sure that I don't lose that trust and respect, when I get a chance to start thinking about all the ways that I can improve the standing of the Roman Empire. I have to make sure that their armies stay strong, their economy stays healthy, and that they aren't socially shunned by the rest of the world. I also got to make sure that we don't fall to scientifically behind the other three empires that are competing for this world. It's a good thing I'm technically immortal or I would be dying from the stress right now.

looks like this is going to be my new home. It doesn't look like it's anything to special as far as Domuses go. It's a single floor building with two tabernae (storefront rooms), which is pretty standard.

Aurelius: "all right, let's see what's inside. You two can stay out here while me and my servants take a look."

Praetorian 1: "yes my Lord."

Stepping inside, One thought comes to mind, the guy who owned this house last really did enjoy the finer things. The outside looks relatively plain but inside is magnificent. I don't see a single chip tile or loose brick anywhere, all the tile and marble in here is finely polished. There's even a statue of Fortuna, Goddess of fortune and luck in the Impluvium (indoor pond).

I should probably take a look around and see what the departed senator has left behind. Where should I start?

1.-2. Tabernae: storefront rooms that open out onto the street and are usually rent out.

3.-6. & 11.-13. Cubiculum: small rooms that usually functioned as bedrooms but were sometimes converted into private meeting rooms, libraries, storerooms, etc.

7. & 15. Triclinium: Dinning rooms.

8. Tablinum: Office/Study, usually where the familial and financial records were stored and worked on.

9. Culina: kitchen.

10. Peristylium: Open air colonnaded garden.

15. Exedra: Garden room usually used for formal entertainments and lavish dinner parties.

Aurelius: Right, business before pleasure. Entering the Tablinum, I immediately notice the large table in the center with a few scrolls on it. It seems to have a small storage area under it for additional scrolls, much like the shelves to my right. There also seems to be a bust of the departed Senator here, or maybe it's of one of his ancestors. Well, I should get an idea of what the Senator had his hands in financially if I am to maintain a steady income. Oh, looks like Itet had a similar idea.

Itet: "Oh! Pardon me my lord, I should have known you would have wished to see to the finances first." She steps back from the table and pushes away the open large scroll. It looks like there is another smaller open scroll on the table, as well as several bellow the table in some of the nooks.

Aurelius: "It's quite alright Itet, but I will trust you haven't disturbed anything in this room."

Itet: "Of course not my lord." She gives a small but humble bow.

Aurelius: "Now, let us see what we have here."

Aurelius: It looks like the scroll is indicating that the senator had been renting out the Tabernea out front to a specific vineyard for the past few years, One that he owned. It also looks like he was getting a lot of money from it, like more than he should have been. I wonder how.

I can think of a few reasons for this to happen. Either he's lying about where the money's coming from in order to launder it, like for example the vineyeard is a front for illegal activity... or he's lying about the profits in order to encourage investment in the vineyard or something.

>>714585
Aurelius: Hmm... Economics was never my strong suit, but it seems that the senator might have made false claims of financial succes to incourage investments. Or he could have owned the vineyard under an alias so he could force the merchants to pay out of their paychecks, thus they would only get paid half as much with fewer complaints. Either way it is hard to tell so I can't replicate his financial success. Oh well, lets see the other scroll.

Aurelius: Oh! Its the deed to the vineyard mentioned in the other scroll. Great! Now I have a reliable income. That is assuming it wasn't auctioned off yet. OK, what should I do next? Should I Look at more finance scrolls to get a better idea of how much the vineyard will earn me, Leave and go look through another room for more sweet loot, or get to know Itet for a while?

Aurelius: good idea.

Itet: "I'll leave you to your work then my lord." She starts toward the doorway behind her, but then stops when I speak up.

Aurelius:" Actually, If you have a moment I would like to talk to you."

Itet: "uh...of course my lord. Why do you wish to talk to me though?"

Aurelius: "I want to get to know you better, and I wanted some company while I went through these financial records. Speaking of which, could you hand me the other financial records stored below?"

Itet: "Ah. Yes my lord" she reached below the table and grabbed three large scrolls. "If it would not be to much to ask questions of my own."

Aurelius: "That seems fair, so tell me about yourself."

Itet: "I'm not sure what it is you want to know, I am 32 years old and have been a slave most of my life. I don't think there is much you would be interested in outside of that."

Aurelius: "How about your life before now? You must have been in the service of a few other lords if you've been a slave for most of your life."

Aurelius: " Well lets start by hearing of your life under your first master."

Itet: She seems somewhat reluctant but not entirety opposed to this. "It was somewhat demanding, he was the son of a rich merchant from the provinces in Anatolia. He wasn't looking for a servant as much as he was looking for a plaything. Something to toy with and look at, it wasn't until he came of age and his father started entrusting him with the family business that he started to play around with me less and less."

Aurelius: "He sounds like a spoiled brat, What happened after that?"

Itet: "Eventually their business failed and I had to be sold. I was sold to a merchant in Greece for a few months. It was physical demanding but to terrible, I did manage to see much of the empire after all."

Their was no day that I or the other slaves did not fear his wrath, we were only ever hopeful that he would get more slaves so that the rest of us would be spared his wrath over the smallest of miss steps. It was twice as terrifying for me as.... he was fond of me. " She is having trouble continuing.

Aurelius: "you don't need to say any more of him if it causes you pain."

Itet: "No. It is better to remember the pain so it can be avoided the second time." she seems to be holding strong despite the obvious pain of remembering. "He had done many cruel things, not one of them I will forget. Especially the loss of my child." Wait What?!

Itet: " He had forced upon me a child with what he claimed to be affection, A child I had planed to raise despite being born under a cruel man." her eyes start to well up with tears. "But after the birth of my daughter, Aneksi, the Governor learned of his son's death in a minor skirmish in the north. From that day forward his wrath was twice as fearsome and terrible, and I knew my daughter would not survive in his house. I brought her to a merchant who had shown me kindness and begged for him to raise her. ...To this day I still pray to Mut and Isis that I made the right choice."

Aurelius: "... I'm so sorry."

Itet: She quickly wipes away her tears. "Now it is your turn to answer one of my questions. What you and the Emperor said, were you actually approached by a divine being, are we truly in a new world, and is your life really tied to Rome?"

Itet: "WHY are you so kind to me and the others? You treat us as equals so readily, the last person who showed me any kindness like that was the merchant's son, but unlike him you seem to be genuine in how you treat us."

Aurelius: "If you must know, where I am from, the act of slavery has been a dead concept for at least 2 hundred years."

Itet: She then started to stare at me like a mother who thinks her child is lying. "Really? If it is a dead concept then why purchase slaves yourself?"

Aurelius: "It was better than letting the four of you be bought by possibly cruel people. I would have trouble sleeping at night if I simply walked by the four of you without doing something, anything to help. After all, doing nothing to stop that is as good as committing to such cruelty in the first place."

Not that dead. American Corporations and Federal Institutions have been occupying small city-states and island nations for about a century, reaping the benefits of rare / cost-effective resources while leaving the local civilians at the mercy of low-media capitalist slumhood.

But hey, there's a serious difference between (A) mashing someone to the ground with your boot because you recognize their potential and how they can steal your future (pissed off or not), and (B) outright denying their existence as a sentient being while burning them to death for sport.

So yeah. Progress.

>>715676
Maybe you should deal with this now. If you set fair wages, give a reasonable price for her slave deed (500-750 denarii?), and send her on free-reign missions (give her orders but let her handle how she completes them) she might relent for her time as your slave.

Well, a quick way to end this would be to tell her to stab you through the heart after asking her to let you take off your shirt... but it sounds like you'd rather fight.

Your regenerative blessing should dispel the dizziness very quickly, so just steady yourself against the doorframe and grab your sword. Fight defensively, tell her you'd rather not get blood on your clothes again and getting stabbed is painful anyway. Tell her you are not from Rome anyway. Not this Rome. Aurelius: "Part of having freedom includes the ability to define what you think freedom IS. I never said you were fully, completely free. None of us are, not while three other factions are planning to rape, pillage, and otherwise conquer us into submission. I've given you a rank, orders, and tools to complete them. It's up to you to determine what they mean, how you want to carry them out, and IF you want to carry them out." Think I found the shard, just.... gotta...

I don't see any discrepancies, this is actually pretty standard as far as Roman homes go, the only oddity I see is that the Exedra (15) and the neighboring Triclinium (14) are in the wrong places. So should I look at another room or look around in the one I'm already in?

1. Tabernae: storefront rooms that open out onto the street and are usually rent out.

2. Tabernae

3. Cubiculum: small rooms that usually functioned as bedrooms but were sometimes converted into private meeting rooms, libraries, storerooms, etc.

4. Cubiculum

5. Cubiculum

6. Cubiculum

7. Triclinium: Dinning room.

8. Tablinum: Office/Study, usually where the familial and financial records were stored and worked on.

9. Culina: kitchen.

10. Peristylium: Open air colonnaded garden.

11. Cubiculum

12. Cubiculum

13. Cubiculum: I am here!

14. Triclinium

15. Exedra: Garden room usually used for formal entertainments and lavish dinner parties.

I'm thinking flamethrowers in rooms 3-6 and four turrets in room 10, if we can research the technology in this campaign.

Turn the stalls into window display cases with model airplanes and wax fruits. Get the investors interested so you can get started on upgrading Rome.

Inventory continues. Time to check which cubiculi contain what (bedroom, storeroom, etc.), and then check the state of the tabernae (have they been completely vacated or is there evidence that the vineyard's salesman still renting them and waiting for the house to be open anew).

Also, check the sleeping arrangements/hygiene features/etc.,

I doubt we'll be able to get that far technologically until the war is long over. Besides, I don't really see much need to fortify our home, it's already inside the city and the only important person living in it happens to be immortal.

>>728485
This. Then we can get to work on "inventing" some stuff, or at least making the preparations to "invent" some stuff.

Aurelius: ....OK...That's kinda outside of my capabilities at the moment, and sorta pointless seeing as Rome is in no real threat of being attacked at the moment. But, yes I can see how having one of the two store fronts filled with models and designs that people can invest in would make for a productive means of "modernizing" Rome. And It might be a good idea to convert one of these Cubiculum into a small workshop for making these designs, the one I'm in right now could work seeing as now that I really look at it, it's kinda barren. Just a few empty pots and dusty bookcases, and there is a single chest in here but it is locked. I also found a small bit of cloth to clean up the large patch of blood that covered the back of my head. It sounds like Itet and Baltair managed to find Odila a bed in the neighboring Cubiculum.

>>728485
As for your question of Hygiene features in here, their are none. Most Roman cities are dotted with public latrines and have bathhouses near the center of the city. (Might be another thing to work on later.)

Aurelius: "I am sorry that you have to be so lately informed of this, but I have been gifted this home and all that lies within by Emperor Hadrian himself, and that includes the Tabernae."

Back in the Tablinum a few minuets later...

Aurelius: "So then, the Vineyard is is built mostly with wine in mind?"

Vineyard Salesman: "Yes, but we also deal in vinegar. And occasionally ointments."

Aurelius: "How much wine do we have stored away at this time?"

Vineyard Salesman: "We have enough of our more highly prized, sweet white wine to last until the next harvest, but we have more that twice as much red wine stored away. So we won't really need to sell the white wine yet; especially since, though it is fully matured, it is only a year away from the best age for it."

Aurelius: "Good, now how have we done as far as this month's sales go?"

Vineyard Salesman: "Not very well actually, normally we would sell close to 130 Amphora (Ancient Roman equivalent to wine barrels) each month, but we barely sold more than 40 this month. With all the rumors of the strange things happening at the frontiers, many believed it to be an ill omen, so we only earned close to 210 denarii."

-210 Denarii acquired-

Aurelius: "Well those ideas will soon change. For now continue to sell the Red wine."

Vineyard Salesman: "As you wish, my Lord"

Aurelius: Alright, before I send him away, is there anything else I am missing?

Vineyard Salesman: "Uh. Very well, it shall be done. May I ask why?"

Aurelius: "To put it simply, lead is one of the least healthiest things to put in your body. Despite what many would say."

Vineyard Salesman: "I'm not entirely sure of what you mean, but I will have faith in your judgement. Now if you will excuse me my lord; the sun has set, the 11th hour (5 pm) is passing, and I must return to the Tabernae."

See if you can find anyone you recognize, by name or otherwise, to be trustworthy, moral, honorable, and reasonable. If such an individual can be found they'd be the obvious place to start with making connections. Avoid anyone with too many selfish interests, we aren't skilled enough to manipulate them properly and they may see the change we represent as a threat to their interests. This goes double for merchants, given our weak economics. You're new here and are the obvious center of attention, people are likely to approach you on their own, be cordial to them, and answer any question they may ask, but don't make any agreements or promises with anyone.
