You possess a GNAWING DEPRESSION THAT EATS AT YOUR BONES, a SEVERE ADDICTION, SOME WRAPPED MINTS, and THE CLOTHES ON YOUR BACK. You also possess a GALAXY S4, but thank the heavens that doesn’t take up any inventory slots. The GNAWING DEPRESSION and SEVERE ADDICTION are locked to your person and cannot be discarded at this time, and you’re unwilling to part with the GALAXY S4. Your emotional state is PRETTY OKAY, ALL THINGS CONSIDERED.

What you do not possess that you wish you did, presently, are A SENSE OF SECURITY and A PERSONAL IDENTITY. You’d only be able to take one of them, though, since your INVENTORY is currently halved due to your current state of HOMELESSNESS.

Your PERSONAL SUPERNATURAL CAPABILITIES or PSC include a HYPNOTIC VOICE, a CONTRACT WITH SEPARATION (allowing you to supernaturally dodge attacks, walk through closed or locked doors, slip out of handcuffs, and defy gravity to a degree), a CONTRACT WITH AUTUMN (allowing you to determine another’s fear), and a CONTRACT WITH WINTER (allowing you to discover why someone is sad, when they are).

You don't know where you are.

Step one, determine where you are.
Step two, acquire food.
Step three, ponder backstory.

Does you possess (or otherwise retain) any memories?

What's your current situation? You appear to be running from something.

Memories only take up a slot in your INVENTORY if they’re extracted, so you do have some knowledge of what’s happened to you. But your mast—your handler, let’s call him, took a lot of them from you. He’s the reason you don’t know where you are. Not just in a local sense. You have no idea where you are in the world, either. You were never told.

At least you can still look at stuff. He didn’t take your sight.

You’re not really running from something, per se, so you stop running and take in your surroundings.

You’re at an intersection. It’s residential. All you can see for blocks are houses. And a guy on the sidewalk, you guess. He doesn’t look like he’s going to attack you. And you’re not being chased. Mostly you just wanted to be sure your handler’s underlings—your only friends—wouldn’t be able to track or pursue you. You did kind of disappear without a trace, so you wanted to put distance between yourself and them. And in a city where you don’t know the surroundings, there’s no use worrying about getting lost. Everywhere is lost.

Your handler was a vampire who bought you from some hobgoblin slavers. He only really wanted you for your blood at first, you’re pretty sure, because it tastes different than a mortal’s blood. More exotic, he always told you.

The process of having one’s blood consumed by a vampire is an incredibly heady rush. It’s also extremely addictive. More so when they feed you their own blood. He did that to you a lot. A blood bond, he called it. You’re suffering from the highest strength possible, which makes it so that every part of you is screaming to go back to him, that you can’t take care of yourself, you need him, and it felt so good you have to go back you’re his property you need to be obedient—

You try to run from this strange person who just showed up out of nowhere. But for some reason, your legs are refusing to move.

He just kind of keeps grinning at you, though, like he’s expecting a response.

You’ve never seen anyone with horns before, so you try to ask who he is and why he has horns.

“What are you?”

Stellar.

“Uh,” he says. “I’m… Jake? A satyr? A changeling? Like you?”

“What?”

He flicks the tip of your ears. You freeze up all over again at the invasion of personal space. “Normal people have round ears. You got kidnapped, right? And taken off to Super Magic Land? And now you look different from how you used to.”

You nod uncertainly.

“So, you’re probably really confused and scared. Well. Let me give you the brief low-down. You’re in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and—“

“What’s a Michigan?” you ask.

The changeling in front of you looks at you like you’re stupid and you regret saying anything. But then his expression turns sympathetic. “How old were you when you were taken?”

“Seven.”

“Right. And out of country, too. Here. Tell you what. Let’s take you to Lalonde, and he’ll set you straight. People don’t usually run unless they’re escaping somewhere, and he can set you up. We’ve got a network. You got a name?”

You shake your head.

“Well, you’re pretty jumpy, so… let’s call you Skittish, yeah?”

You don’t know how you feel about the name, and you don’t know how you feel about going with him.

>“What’s a Michigan?” you ask.
It's a place! Obviously.

>You don’t know how you feel about the name
It's a lame name. You need to find an actual name, not a description / title.

>and you don’t know how you feel about going with him
Well he seems earnest. And if he really wanted to do anything, he doesn't really need to resort to tricking you into it. If he had bad intentions, he could just act on them, while you couldn't get away with the leg freezing trick.

The fact he's not resorting to brute force and is trying to talk you into it means he has reason to. And the most likely reason is that he's honestly trying to help.

“Um,” you say, “can I maybe not be called Skittish, though?”

Jake shrugs. “If you can come up with something better, by all means, let me know. We just have kind of a thing about naming people after their traits in the changeling community. Like, you know, one of my closest friends is named Steele. Three guesses what he’s made of. Viola Nightingale’s another good friend of mine. Guess what instrument she plays. Et cetera. If you don’t like it personally, that’s fine, though.”

You don’t have anything to say to that for the time being, so you decide to go with him. “Okay. Let’s go.”

Jake starts to lead you to Lalonde, whoever that is. He seems pretty excited about it.

During the walk, while Jake makes a phone call, you decide it might be a good idea to test something out—using the AUTUMN CONTRACT on yourself to discern your current deepest fear. The world seems a little more vivid and colorful as you concentrate. Some leaves blow past your face as you activate it, and you’re a bit chilled.

It’s July.

With a fair degree of speed, your fear makes itself clear to you: you’re more afraid of going back into the threshold between “Super Magic Land,” as Jake called it, and here. It’s where the hobgoblins live. Where they held you for… who knows how long.

You’re afraid of getting captured again, and getting sold off to someone else. Someone worse.

Well. That was nice.

It’s not too long before you and Jake stop moving.

“Well, here he is. Hungry Tatarind Lalonde.”

Lalonde is probably seven feet tall and over three hundred pounds. What unsettles you most is that his smile full of razor-sharp teeth is physically too wide to be able to fit in his head.

Hungry Tatarind Lalonde terrifies you.

“Hello!” he says, his voice booming. “And welcome to the Crimson Table. I’m sure you have lots of questions.”

"Actually," you say, "I don't even really know enough to have questions. Except... where am I, again?"

"You're in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is a part of the United States," Lalonde says. You're from Westminster. This is great. He seems to notice your wince, though. "Should I just give you the basic lowdown?"

"Yeah, that'd probably be... something to work from," you say.

"Well. I represent the Spring Court, the Court of Desire. We do our best to get new Changelings settled down. We make sure they have a place to live, a method of contact, and a job right out the starting gate. We have three other Courts, also based upon the seasons, that all serve other purposes. Summer is the Court of Wrath, and they handle matters of war and combat. Jake here is a member of that court, their newest, if I recall correctly. Autumn is the Court of Fear, and most often works with research and gathering of magical artifacts. And Winter is the Court of Sorrow. They keep secrets and spread information."

"Okay," you say. "What year is it?"

"2014," he says.

You haven't actually been told what year it was since 1988, but you're not exactly surprised, all things considered, so you try to take it in stride. You definitely haven't aged at the same rate as time has passed. Maybe "Super Magic Land" does that to you.

"If you don't have any more questions, Jake can get you set up with Amy. If you do, I'd be happy to answer them."
>>
No. 691517 ID: d0868f

This doesn't seem like a bad deal. Working with a group like this could net you a SENSE OF SECURITY, and if they get you a place to live, that should hopefully dispel the HOMELESSNESS penalty.

>matters of war and combat
We have enemies then? Someone we have to fight? Who... oh no, they don't come after us, do they?!

>courts of Autumn / Winter
You're probably going to end up in one of those, looking at your skillset. Your powers are sort of sneaky, and finding things out / information based.
