AFTER-ACTION REPORT:

The transport vessel Vinnik Croaka was destroyed by Ziljin forces within the gravitational pull of border planet Varsuvius on allied date U92 V12-14 C2-15. Reports indicate that 12 passengers were able to escape the ship in safety pods. They most likely crash-landed on Varsuvius. Initial scans of the planet's surface return signatures that suggest all twelve pods landed in Varsuvius's Keppler Zone.

Six of those signatures were grouped together, meaning that one half of the survivors were likely able to steer their pods together before landing. This is the group that should be considered the highest priority for rescue, as they are the most likely to survive in the Keppler Zone.

Attached is information on Varsuvius and the Keppler Zone, as well as the crew files of the twelve survivors.

KEPPLER ZONE
The Keppler Zone is classified as an Abnormal Entity by the Allied Knowledge Bureau. It is a Blackzone-type entity. It is characterized by its bizarre geology and dangerously mutated wildlife. The dominant biome within the Keppler Zone is xeric shrubland (84%).

The Abstract Zone on Quicksilver is the closest similar Blackzone entity. Current communications and tracking technology is suppressed by Blackzones. It is inadvisable to send ground search teams in air or vehicle transport into a Blackzone. Allied search teams should be transported by air to the edge of the Keppler Zone and proceed on foot.

The Keppler Zone should be considered extremely dangerous. Reports of banditry within the Keppler Zone are approximately fifteen times higher than average for Varsuvius. Additionally, 97% of all reported deaths by dangerous animal on Varsuvius in U91 were within the Keppler Zone. Because of the nature of a Blackzone, these rates should be considered much higher than they were reported.

The Keppler Zone's effects have been measured up to 600 meters above its surface. This is too high to conduct an effective search by air, but care packages may be viable. The survivors should not be considered to still currently be in proximity of their pods' energy signatures. Additionally, the care packages may be commandeered by bandits, so they should be limited to containing food, clothing, and survival equipment.

CREW FILES

Pater Visil
Gender: Male
Species: Avaran
Occupation: Co-Pilot on the Vinnik Croaka
Personality: Visil passed all applicable personality tests to qualify for the position of co-pilot on board the Vinnik Croaka. The evaluating psychologist described Visil as calm and collected, and skilled at operating under pressure. He was described as easy-going and mild-mannered by former acquaintances, and as professional and reliable by former employers.
Background Check: Visil was born on the Avaran planet Yasseli on U64 Y8-11 C27. He has no criminal record on that planet. At the age of 19, he moved to the Koel planet Dakrel and found work as a police officer while attending flight school. Seven unified cycles later he signed up as the co-pilot of the Vinnik Croaka.
Personal Items: Visil applied to carry his service revolver on board the Vinnik Croaka, and his request was approved by the company's safety panel.

Koelki Takelska Rozen Avalti Yarokelk Crilkat Zavelk Lakesk
Gender: Female
Species: Koel
Occupation: Surgeon
Personality: As of her last session, Lakesk's therapist described her as cool and polite but easily irritated. He suggested that she had a history of not getting along well with others, and what he considered a dangerous inclination towards solitude. However, she exhibited no signs of paranoia and appeared mentally sound.
(It should be noted when calculating odds of survival that the Koel people have a genetic predisposition towards mental illness that is aggravated by a lack of social interaction, which their government mandates that they attend therapy sessions regularly to combat.)
Background Check: Lakesk was born on the Koel homeworld of Dekralde on U45 D9-12 C15. She was raised at Takelska Academy, and received her basic education from the Rozen Learning Center. She went on to attend Avalti Primary School and afterwards enrolled in Yarokelk Higher Learning. She received a degree in medicine from Crilkat University and a certificate of mastery in medicine from the Zavelk Institute. She enrolled in an elite surgery program at the Lakesk Foundation and received her terminal degree in surgery at the age of 30. She then left Dekralde and began work as the Chief of Surgery at Uralki Hospital on the Koel planet Ivakesk. Seventeen unified cycles later she was drafted into the Koel People's Army and secured transport on the Vinnik Croaka to her new job as Head Master Surgeon at the Ovalri military base on Yatterming.
Personal Items: Lakesk registered with the ship's records a set of surgical tools that she preferred to work with, as well as her personal first aid kit.

Tomas Ravesii
Gender: Male
Species: Avaran
Occupation: Bounty Hunter
Personality: Ravesii has been described as gruff but agreeable by former acquaintances. He prefers to operate as a lone wolf, which is not uncommon for bounty hunters. He kept a fair rapport with his fellow bounty hunters, who had plenty of bad things to say about him but generally agreed that he was, in the end, a decent sort.
Background Check: Ravesii was born on the Avaran planet Holde on U47 H5-13 C24. He went through the Avaran educational system but dropped out of secondary school and enlisted in the United Avari Army. He was discharged for "reckless behaviour" and left the military training facility on Avaldi on U64 A1-11 C28. He traveled from planet to planet doing odd jobs before being hired by a bail recovery agency as a bounty hunter, where he worked for the next 11 cycles until the agency closed, and from then on took individual bounties. He had purchased passage on the Vinnik Croaka in search of a bounty that had fled to the border planets.
Personal Items: Ravesii is the registered owner of a NovaldTec-BWA Phase Bracer. This device permanently wired into his body allows him to teleport short distances at will, known as 'blinking.'

Katerina Corbitt
Gender: Female
Species: Avaran
Occupation: Sergeant First Class (Retired)
Personality: Corbitt's military evaluations describe her as incautious and self-absorbed, but speak to her leadership capabilities and combat prowess. One particularly glowing evaluation calls her a "born leader" with "unfortunate attitude problems." These issues would eventually lead her to an honourable discharge at the age of 34.
Background Check: Corbitt was born on the Koel planet Dekalskei on U58 D8-15 C12, and described her childhood there as "unsettling and awkward." She enlisted in the military as soon as she was old enough to do so, and was promoted to Staff Sergeant on U81. Nine cycles later she suffered severe injures when her vehicle exploded during an attack by Ziljin forces. She survived, and received several medals for her bravery. She was given an honourable discharge two cycles later and retired well-decorated. Shortly thereafter she boarded the Vinnik Croaka to return to civilian life.
Personal Items: Sgt. Corbitt was outfitted with several cybernetic enhancements courtesy of the Koel War Bureau after suffering injuries in the line of duty, including one eye and her right arm.

Carmikel Lavent Konalka Kerkit Rotalde Inizvit-Kealka Bertald
Gender: Male
Species: Koel
Occupation: Engineer on the Vinnik Croaka
Personality: In his psychiatric evaluations, Bertald is described as calm and professional, but absorbed in mechanical and electric work to the detriment of his social interactions. Fellow engineers reported finding his briskness occasionally annoying.
Background Check: Bertald was born on the Koel home planet Dekralde on U61 D5-12 C22. He was raised at Lavent Elementary and assigned to the Konalka Learning Academy, then enrolled at Kerkit Primary Education. After graduating, he went on to attend the Rotalde Higher Learning Center and graduated from Inizvit-Kealka University with a degree in engineering. He received a certificate of mastery in aerospace engineering from the Bertald Institute. In U81 he was hired by the transportation company that owned the Vinnik Croaka, and was assigned to it in U89.
Personal Items: Bertald was known to carry his toolbox at all times, and kept several other tools in his uniform.

Isabelle Banette
Gender: Female
Species: Avaran
Occupation: Psychologist
Personality: Former patients described Banette's personality as playful and friendly, saying that she always felt like she genuinely cared for them and wasn't just listening to their problems because they paid her. They cited examples of when she would take time outside of work to help them with their personal lives to support her warm and endearing personality.
Background Check: Banette was born on the Avaran planet Sylvie on U66 S8-8 C35. Once she graduated secondary school, she received her degree in psychology from Loreal University in U87. She joined a practice and worked as a therapist and psychologist for around five cycles before being recruited by the Avaran Armed Forces as a military psychologist. She was assigned to a border planet and was traveling there onboard the Vinnik Croaka.
Personal Items: Banette brought on board several books on Avaran and Koel psychology.

Jonathan Hartbeck
Gender: Male
Species: Avaran
Occupation: Veterinarian
Personality: Hartbeck scored highly on his standardized testing, suggesting a thoughtful and diligent personality. The owners of Hartbeck's patients attested to his good nature and kindness. Hartbeck is also registered as a pacifist with the Avaran Armed Forces.
Background Check: Hartbeck was born on the Avaran planet Tuttleby on U55 T7-11 C9 to two agricenter employees. He was home schooled, and taught how to care for the animals on the autofarm. When he was 18 cycles old, he chose to pursue this as a career, attending college for eight cycles before receiving his doctorate in veterinary science. He started his own practice on Tuttleby, and eleven cycles later was drafted into the Avaran Armed Forces as part of the Military Medicine and Surgery Initiative. He was given free passage on the Vinnik Croaka to a mobile army surgical hospital on Quicksilver.
Personal Items: Security footage from the Vinnik Croaka shows that Hartbeck carried scalpels and a needle and thread in his pockets.

Paula Kemp
Gender: Female
Species: Avaran
Occupation: Mess Cook on the Vinnik Croaka
Personality: Kemp's former employers described her as "territorial" and "domineering," but pointed to glowing reviews from customers as proof of her skills. One ex-boss described her as someone who "does good work, but you should stay out of her way." These attitude problems are likely what forced her to change jobs repeatedly until she found work on the Vinnik Croaka, a place where she could claim her workspace and control it to her satisfaction.
Background Check: Kemp was born on the Mausen planet Taktile on U53 T5-6 C24 to refugees who had fled their home planet after it was destroyed by the Ziljin. They eked out a meager existence under Mausen rule, and Kemp's mother taught her how to cook, which she became quite good at. She found employment as a chef at several different places on Taktile, before earning enough money to leave her family behind and move off-world to the nearest Avaran planet, Yovilde, some time in U77. She worked many jobs there before finding employment on the Vinnik Croaka for three unified cycles.
Personal Items: Kemp reportedly carried spices and imported ingredients in her apron that she used in the ship's meals.

Malikai Lorelto Rozen Kuritz
Gender: Male
Species: Koel
Occupation: Lieutenant
Personality: Kuritz is classified by the Koel government as a Code Blue Risky Asset -- a Koel who, despite repeated attempts to reign him or her in, continues to exhibit worrying symptoms of paranoia and mental degeneration. Kuritz had gone through multiple therapists, who were unable to help him control his degrading psyche. His last therapy session suggested that he may be developing schizophrenia, and the Koel Psychiatry Corps had therefore filed a request for him to be upgraded to a Code Yellow Unreliable Asset and given a less remote assignment that would put him in greater contact with other people.
Background Check: Kuritz was born on the Koel home planet Dekralde on U66 D8-12 C15. He was raised at Lorelto Youth Training and received basic education at the Rozen Learning Center. He then attended Kuritz Primary School, but did not score high enough on his exit exams to qualify for further training. At the age of 14, he was drafted into the Koel People's Army and assigned to a border posting, at which he has remained for 12 unified cycles.
Personal Items: Because of his paranoid tendencies, Kuritz was known to wear body armor at all times.

Tareli Fareza Karka Azelto Kamperby Olvek
Gender: Female
Species: Koel
Occupation: Computer Scientist
Personality: Olvek's occupation as a computer scientist provides a dangerous predisposition towards isolation that entitled her to mandatory bonus therapy sessions. Her past therapists described her as analytical, reasonable, and resourceful, but noted that left to her own devices, she would opt to seclude herself well beyond healthy levels, and therefore recommended that she not be left to herself for long periods of time.
Background Check: Olvek was born on the Koel planet Isolik on U63 I2-10 C9. She was raised at the Fareza Juvenile Care Facility and received basic education at Karka Elementary, before being enrolled at Azelto Hall, where she showed an interest in computer science, which she pursued during her education at Kamperby Higher Learning. After graduating, she attended Olvek University and received her degree in computer science at the age of 22. She was given a government job as a computer security technician, and after 7 unified cycles she received orders to report to one of the border planets as a civilian employee on a military base.
Personal Items: Olvek was unlikely to go anywhere without her PDA, and may have kept her laptop when fleeing the Vinnik Croaka.

Xavier Nikthus
Gender: Male
Species: Avaran
Occupation: Priest
Personality: Being a man of the faith, Nikthus is described as morally upstanding, compassionate, and spiritual. Though serious Nikth-worship is not common among modern-day Avari, the Reverend Nikthus is still welcome at military bases across the galaxy, and men report taking comfort in his presence.
Background Check: Nikthus was born on the contested border planet Quicksilver on U68 Q9-12 C23. Besides reported affiliation with some local gangs, his childhood was uneventful. Due to the lack of a formal education system on Quicksilver, Nikthus received no significant education or job training, and was therefore unfit for off-planet work. He reports having found Nikth when he was 19 cycles old, describing his faith as "[his] only way out," that his faith felt like his only real purpose. After setting up a church on Quicksilver, he was hired by the United Avari Army for the positive effect he had on soldiers' morale, and soon began being shuttled across all the contested border planets.
Personal Items: Nikthus kept on his person a collection of holy symbols, and an old-fashioned physical copy of the Nikthian holy text.

Codename Vertik
Gender: Hermaphrodite
Species: Variacosan
Occupation: Covert Operative for the Avari-Koel Alliance
Personality: Vertik is described as alien but professional by other operatives. The Allied War Council has declared Vertik to be fully trustworthy, despite es nature. E is considered a reliable and effective asset.
Background Check: Vertik's background is highly classified and cannot be included in this report. However, e is considered a high priority for rescue and is primarily the reason that the Avari-Koel Alliance has seen fit to dedicate the amount of resources to this search and rescue party that it has. Once Codename Vertik is recovered, the search will likely be called off.
Personal Items: Vertik brought on board several changes of clothing for both Avaran and Koel bodies under the name Harold Solder.

Goal: Find as many survivors of the Vinnik Croaka as possible and keep them alive until rescue comes.

Choose six crew members to form your starting group.

You should choose the crew members you think will be the most useful, but be mindful that whomever you choose to leave in the Keppler Zone may not survive on their own, and that maintaining morale will be of vital importance.

Katerina for leadership and to have someone that can actually fight

Carmikel and Tareli to hopefully build something to help us find the other or get posably even find a way to make finding the other 6 pods easier and quicker.

Isabelle to try and keep everyone together

Koelki to keep everyone alive

and Xavier just because I honestly don't think he'd last to long by himself out there.

The other 6 I feel would have a better lasting out there by themselves then others in the group while still making a decent team. That's my 2 cents on it anyways.

U92 V12-14 C2-16-32

Six emergency pods steer themselves into a tight group as they enter Varsuvius's atmosphere. The remaining six go wide, and as the planet's surface looms large they disappear out of sight, lost elsewhere in the Keppler Zone.

The survivors that emerge from the pods are Koelki Takelska Rozen Avalti Yarokelk Crilkat Zavelk Lakesk, Katerina Corbitt, Carmikel Lavent Konalka Kerkit Rotalde Inizvit-Kealka Bertald, Isabelle Banette, Tareli Fareza Karka Azelto Kamperby Olvek, and Xavier Nikthus. The natural leader of this group is Katerina Corbitt. Your commands will be issued through her, unless she is left at base.

Under the unified cycle system, Varsuvius has 26 common cycles per lunar cycle. Each of these common cycles is made up of 24 hours, 60 minutes, and 60 seconds. It is currently Hour 16 of the 2nd common of the 12th lunar. It is winter, 1 hour to nightfall.

The group abandons their escape pods in search of shelter from the cold and dark. After 2 hours of walking through the Keppler Zone, they come across a dilapidated hospital and take refuge there.

The hospital appears to have been abandoned, perhaps due to the Blackzone's shifting boundaries, or after being raided by bandits. All of the medical equipment has been stolen and the building is ransacked. Only the walls remain, which are made of fab-sheet, a thick plaster-like material cut and fastened together to cheaply and quickly erect buildings. A simple sledgehammer could knock a hole in it.

It is C2-18-30. Sunrise is in 10 hours. The group will need food, water, clothing, weapons, technological and medical equipment, and building materials if they hope to survive. These can be acquired through expeditions into the Keppler Zone. If this position is to be held, it must also be fortified against attack by wild animals, bandits, and Ziljin soldiers. Making it livable will also have a positive impact on morale.

You may designate search parties to venture into the Zone in search of supplies, and give survivors jobs to do during the day and night.

You are now Sgt. First Class Corbitt.

what kind of tech do the pods we came down on have? Because even if they're just metal shells at this point we can probably scape them for materials for other things.

I say split into 2 groups. Katerina Corbitt, Tareli, and Carmikel go out and see what they can gather from the pods. The other three should do a quick sweep of the building to see what hasn't been taken, what parts of the building need to be fixed/reenforced the most, and what rooms would be best to set up our own field hospital, private rooms, alter, ect. (as in if the buildings operating room has a huge hole in the ceiling we probably should fix that before we turn the room into anything).

The pods would need to be examined to determine exactly what usable components they could be broken down into, but they could provide useful metal if nothing else.

A scavenging party is formed of SFC Corbitt, Olvek, and Bertald. The group has no weapons, so the party cannot be equipped with anything. Of the party, only Corbitt has any hand-to-hand combat experience. Her left hook packs a mean wallop. Corbitt tells the others to do a thorough sweep of their new home for anything scavengable, and any parts of the building that are in worse condition than the rest.

The scavenging party walks for two hours back to the location of the pods. Olvek brings her PDA, and uses it to map their route so that they will be able to return when it gets darker. Bringing Olvek on any scavenging mission will allow her to map the exact location of anything they encounter.

C2-20-30
Four hours after the crash, Corbitt and company arrive at the sunken pods. It appears that another group of 4 scavengers, seeing the pods come down from the sky, has arrived before them and begun to take what they can. They look poorly-equipped. Corbitt can avoid a confrontation by hiding and waiting for them to leave, and then picking apart what they left behind. It is likely that they will defend their claim with force if Corbitt tries to intervene.

hide in the brush and see if you can't silently take any out who wonder to far way from the main group. If that doesn't happen and it isn't getting to close to dark yet follow them back to there bass and see if it's one of the gangs around here that we need to watch out for and how well organized they are.

Find a nice sized rock, and have 1SGT Corbitt's Mean Left Hook throw it a good distance away, preferably into something that will make a good amount of noise.
- If all the scavengers scatter, then move in on the pods. If they return, you will not have possession of them and they will be in the same situation out are in now
- If some of the scavengers scatter or investigate, then make a decision on whether to approach depending on how many are left
- If they all stand their ground, then leave them be.

You signal to the other two to hide behind the bushes, and pick up a rock. You sling it with your robotic arm past the guards and towards the furthest pod. It's an easy shot, and the rock bounces off the metal with a reverberating clang. The scavengers all stop what they are doing to look towards the sound.

"Did you hear that?"

"It was probably nothing. Let's just finish up here and get home."

"That's not what nothing sounds like. We should check it out."

"Fine. Lakuet, Charlie, go check it out. We'll stay here and guard the pods. Keep your ears open."

The Koel and the furthest Avaran move away from the pods towards the sound, the other two remain to stand guard.

Assume that these strangers are hostile unless you make some observation that suggests otherwise beyond a reasonable doubt. Since only Corbitt has any combat experience, a violent confrontation would be at best two against one with support.

I suggest to continue to observe the scavengers for any useful information on their intentions and whether or not they are likely to be hostile. With this attempt that you have made at distracting them, they are probably on heightened alert.

1. If they seem potentially hostile, do not engage them, since you are not adequately prepared for combat.

2. If they do not seem hostile, cautiously engage them. Feign an injury, or ask for water to seem less threatening. If talks to turn sour, they will probably underestimate you.

3. See if you can determine anything about the pods by watching or listening to the scavengers.

I would say sneak up on the two that stayed behind but with only one person that knows how to fight and the other two being non-combatants and the other two guys not to far off I'm not sure you could take those two out before they manage to call for help. Either keep your distance and watch/follow them to see if they're a threat or if it's close to night just say fuck it and head on back to the hospital and hope team b found something more promising.

It is not just close to night; it is C2-20-35, a little over two hours to midnight. Fortunately, Varsuvius's moon provides some light.

The scavengers bide their time, waiting for their comrades to investigate the noise and return. One of them pulls out a knife and plays with it, balancing it between two fingers and whistling. As much as you would like to assume good intentions of them, your time in the United Avari Army has taught you that you should never treat Blackzone inhabitants as non-hostile unless they approach you with their hands raised and allow themselves to be restrained. People as desperate as this will not cede anything they have to you unless you take it by force.

Though you feel like you could take on two untrained wastelanders with no problem if you got the jump on them, you can't imagine any way it could go down that wouldn't end with you also having to fight the other two without the element of surprise. It might be a risk worth taking for the materials you could scavenge, but your instinct tells you no.

You hide behind the bushes and wait as the other scavengers return.

"Didn't find anything. Might've been an animal we spooked."

"See? I told you it was nothing. Come on, let's hurry up and get out of here."

Staying low to evade detection, you observe through the leaves that they seem to be gutting the pods of their electronic components and survival equipment. You can't make out any specifics about what they take, but they seem to be surprisingly experienced in scavenging emergency pods. You suspect that either they have done this before (which would not be a surprise, ships go down near the border planets all the time), or they have older survivors in their group, who are not part of the 12 that escaped the Vinnik Croaka. They could even have MIA UAA soldiers working with them.

Eventually, the scavengers gather up and bag everything they have taken, and leave the crash site. You gesture to the others, and stand guard while Olvek and Bertald take everything they can from the pods.

"There's not a lot left here..."

"I can salvage some of this metal. It was probably too heavy for them to carry. But, there will be practically no trace of our pods left."

>take metal
It's good enough for now as we can use it to reenforce the hospital. Maybe make a bunker or panic room just encase.

You instruct Bertald to take the metal, and it takes him almost two hours to disassemble the pods. The three of you carry the resulting scrap back to the hospital, arriving at C2-24-00.

The rest of the group is sleeping in the waiting room. As you offload the new supplies, you wake Lakesk to ask for a sitrep.

>"What did you find while we were gone?"

"The hospital is cleaned out, but mostly intact. There are lots of broken windows but the walls have held. Nothing for us to use."

You feel weary. If you are attacked during the night, it would be helpful to have someone awake and on guard to raise the alarm. You may designate search parties to venture into the Zone in search of supplies, and give survivors jobs to do during the day and night.

well we should probably use the metal to barricade some of the windows so it would be harder for people to sneak in. As for shifts, I feel like at least 4 people should be awake at all times so that should give everyone 8 hours to sleep if we pair people off.

as for teams I feel like Tareli and Carmikel would work well together seeing how they fields tend to cross form time to time. Isabelle and Koelki would probably do well together as well seeing as how both are doctors in there own right and with Koelki being a bit anti socal having someone who understands how koel minds work could help work around that. That just leaves Xavier and Katerina then. We can work on this as time goes on But for tonight I feel like Katerina should take first watch with whoever else doesn't feel like they're going to drop anytime soon. we can plan things out more in the morning.
