|>… META-ELECTRONIC OPERATIONS MATRIARCH MARK TWENTY-TWO OPERATION SYSTEM ACTIVE

|>…

|> ACTIVATING COLONIAL ARMY COMMAND SUBROUTINE

|> Hello, soldiers, officers, engineers, miners, and researchers of Colony Pod 03. This is a high priority announcement in regards to the recent native incursion on outposts on our home planet of NOVA EUROPA. This M.O.M. unit and Section Magistrates have unanimously voted in favor of activating the Colonial Army. Select officers from the Colonial Security Department have been transferred to form the first members of the Colonial Army. For those of you also selected to join, but are not members of Colonial Security, you have been chosen based on your skillset required to help support these brave soldiers in the field.

|> You have been chosen to oversee our first and last line of defense against the native incursion on our lands planetside. To ensure the safety of colonists stationed on the ground. Your actions will have considerable influence on the survival of the Colony. I urge you to keep this in mind.

|> Good luck, children.

News travels fast on the Colony. Though you suppose M.O.M. helped the process along quite a bit. Thankfully for you, you were not going to be dropping down to the ground and fighting. Mom knows what kind of things are down there and certainly you are no fighter. The one fight you did get in your childhood you pretty much blew it. Broken bones, black eye, and M.O.M. lecturing you on how you were a pussy did not make that a good day.

But regardless, as you sit at your computer in the new Colonial Army Command Center Section, you at least could say you were doing your part.

The terminal lit up, and then was immediately replaced by the warm glowing blue central eye of M.O.M.

|> Hello, Tactical Officer. Welcome to MISSION CONTROL. I am a special subroutine of the Meta-Electronic Operations Matriarch designed to assist you with your duties in coordinating groundside deployments, dispatching tactical support, and managing the trooper roster. You currently have ONE TEAM of TEN SOLDIERS at your disposal.

|> I have spoken to the Commander already, and he has already seen fit to authorize a groundside raid on a foraging operation by the natives on one of our former farming outposts. He has assigned you the task of selecting FIVE SOLDIERS for the mission. The objective for this mission is ELIMINATE AND/OR ROUT ALL HOSTILE UNITS FROM MISSION SECTOR. Satellite imagery will be available to help you coordinate the operation and guide the soldiers along in the field and you will have direct radio contact with soldiers in the field.

|> The raid has no particular scheduling at the moment but the Commander has authorized a Strike Team to deploy without his guidance as he settles into his new duties. As a result, you will have the responsibility of deploying the team at your discretion. In the future, the Commander will take more direct control of mission scheduling.

|> For now, your current task is to organize the mission. Image of the MISSION SECTOR will be uploaded to your TACTICAL COMPUTER. Currently, TEAM ONE with TEN SOLDIERS is ready. You may only select FIVE for the mission.

|> If you have questions, I am free to ask, darling. Please choose your next course of action.

|> LOADING DOSSIERS OF TEAM ONE

|> These are the current active and healthy members of TEAM ONE. Your current organizational objective is to select FIVE members of TEAM ONE to deploy on mission. In the future, the Commander may authorize bigger teams to deploy, please keep this in mind.

|> Currently we have TWO SERGEANTS, TWO CORPORALS, and SIX PRIVATES

|> Please keep in mind that while selecting a STRIKE TEAM should be centered around the most elite, you have to understand these people are still human. These little sweethearts have their own flaws and strengths that may or may not help them on mission. Some may be cowardly, others may be brave, some may like fighting alongside others from the same HOME SECTION, others may only like fighting alone. Please do keep this in mind as you select your STRIKE TEAM.

|> When you are finished, you will be asked to confirm and you will have the option of meeting your STRIKE TEAM in the HANGAR.

|> DOSSIERS LOADED
|> SELECT STRIKE TEAM NOW

1. SERGEANT Raymond Calhoun
“Big Brother”
Age: 27
Home Section: Section 03 “Sectorshire”
Background: A big problem child during his formative years in Section 03, spraying graffiti, stealing other kids’ lunch credits, and sneaking out after M.O.M.’s imposed curfew. He became a Colonial Security Officer at 18 to continue his mean streak with a helping of near unlimited power until his mother and father died in an industrial accident. From then on, he served with distinction as a fair if somewhat heavyhanded peacekeeper. Teammates still know him as somewhat of a bully, but his experiences have hardened him against stress and conflict and even brought out some ingenuity in him.

2. SERGEANT Manon DuChamps
“Princess”
Age: 23
Home Section: Section 02 “Petit Paris”
Background: Offspring of a pair of distinguished asteroid miners, Manon was a relatively orderly little girl. She consistently aced her classes through her compulsory education, and even matched M.O.M. in a game of chess broadcasted through the station. Although offered a job with the miners at 18, she instead decided to become a Colonial Security Officer for reasons known only to her. Hardnosed, stuffy, and certainly haughty, but also an intelligent and free-thinking NCO. Little experience with intense conflict.

3. CORPORAL Matt den Dekker
“Bull”
Age: 19
Home Section: Section 04 “Lower Section”
Background: Son of a pair of scientists, but unfortunately did not inherit their intelligence due to a childhood incident where he ran his head against a cleaning robot. Although not specifically stupid, he did make a lot of questionable decisions as a child and still today makes a lot of questionable decisions. He was drafted by Colonial Security however due to his large intimidating size and strength and to give Colonial Security more clout with the Research Departments. Brave, fierce, with very little filter to his mouth. The only thing he fears are robots for very understandable reasons and disappointing his parents.

4. CORPORAL Beatrice Paulson
“Sparks”
Age: 22
Home Section: Section 02 “Petit Paris”
Background: A miner by birth and profession. A relatively easy going woman who throughout most of life on the station mostly stayed out of conflict and other issues. Out of anyone else, looks up M.O.M. the most for advice. Her father being an engineer also taught her some of his skills, which eventually developed into an innate talent for fixing broken items and allowing her to become one of the stations designated repairmen on top of being Colonial Security.

5. PRIVATE Hernan Reyes
“Joker”
Age: 18
Home Section: Section 05 “Hispaniola”
Background: A ball of optimism and humor even after losing his father to an industrial accident, Hernan went through his childhood a relatively popular boy. Many in his Sector know about him and love him for his snarky witticisms and wisecracking. Because of his relationship with the Sector and for his keen eye for details, Hernan was recruited into the Colonial Security forces with haste. Although an unfailing optimist and certainly not one to back down from a fight if need be, one gets the impression that it’s mostly a mask.

6. PRIVATE Lilia Pilla
“Wild Thing”
Age: 18
Home Section: Section 05 “Hispaniola”
Background: A very wild and rambunctious child even by most standards, Lilia’s parents did very little to stop her. As a result, M.O.M. attempted to take direct care of her, which made very little progress in stopping Lilia’s natural abundance of energy. Eventually she started spending this energy out on sports, joining the EVA Track team and winning her Section the Colonial Education Exercise Medal of Excellence four years in a row. Her athleticism brought her to the attention of Colonial Security, who quickly offered her a job. While brash, and certainly brave, she does not know when to give up which has cost her a few races back then.

7. PRIVATE George van den Akker
“Dozer”
Age: 22
Home Section: Section 04 “Lower Section”
Background: Son of one of the most prominent shipboard engineers, he grew up helping his father out in the engine room or in the ventilation shafts or even out in space fixing equipment and building new additions to the Colony. This meant that he grew into a very large and imposing young man, which attracted the attention of Colonial Security. He is known primarily for his expert tech knowledge, and for his anger issues which seem to stem with having to put up with incredibly faulty equipment a lot and which nearly cost him a hand during one particular accident.

8. PRIVATE Suzu Tran
“Tricky”
Age: 24
Home Section: Section 02 “Petit Paris”
Background: An orderly little girl who while average in grade was not average in wisdom. Being raised by ship engineers certainly helped give her the legendary patience she is known for today. Although patient, some would regard her as perhaps inflexible. Despite this, she maintains her post in Colonial Security very well. On the side, she is a schoolteacher who is currently dating one of her colleagues, and is expecting to marry very soon.

9. PRIVATE David Otis Streucker
“Pops”
Age: 60
Home Section: Section 07 “Colditz”
Background: One of the first to be born aboard the Colony, David like many others of the first generation was raised by M.O.M. As a first-born, he was allotted many benefits and was raised in relative comfort unlike the latter generation. However, unlike those of his own, he was did not feel satisfied sitting around and waiting nor did he want to go into a leadership position. He is now serving his fourth year in the Colonial Security, with his age being very little obstacle to his performance. His wife Nina and two childs Pepper and Terrence are currently raising families of their own. Fatherly to a fault and dedicated, but a bit slow-minded.

10. PRIVATE Fiona Posey
“Buster”
Age: 17
Home Section: Section 03 “Sectorshire”
Background: Fiona was a tunnel rat in her day, often climbing into vents and shafts she should not have been during her childhood days. And even before she joined Colonial Security, she remained a delinquent. She skipped classes, broke robots that attempted to return her to the school, and disobeyed orders very frequently. Such is her disobedience that M.O.M. often directly speaks to her and dotes on her in an attempt to curb her behavior due to her parents being very busy scientists. Her behavior in Colonial Security is not much better, and is marred by counts of disorderly conduct.

I don't think Sparks would be very useful on a simple "get rid of natives" mission, especially when the mission site isn't anything tech heavy and it's just foraging.
Plus, I think we should try to have our privates gain experience on simpler missions like this as much as we can.

|> CONFIRMED

|> You have selected your five starting soldiers for this operation, darling! Good job! For now, reinforcing this force will be unavailable due to logistical concerns (the Skyrangers are currently being modified to perform a troop transport function). However, I will alert you when reinforcing is available. However, in certain situations, you may need to perform a TACTICAL RETREAT. Keep this in mind when managing the troops on the field.

|> For now, please report to the briefing room to begin the briefing.

“Alright, alright, can I get everyone’s attention?” You cross your arms, sighing deeply as you watch the motley band of ten soldiers gather in the briefing room. You don’t know why M.O.M. called them all in here. Maybe it’s just so everyone feels included. Mom only knows why. The briefing room unfortunately isn’t exactly Central Command. In fact, it used to be a storage closet before renovators realized they forgot a briefing room. So they just turned it into this. There were still some boxes lying around on the sides, some of which like Akker and Posey were choosing to sit on.

:reyes: “Hey, Pilla! Let me cop a spot!”

:pilla: “Ooh, by all means, Joker!”

:calhoun: “Hey, don’t hog the fuckin’ seats. Let Pops get a seat in.”

At Calhoun’s chastising, the two reluctantly find a chair for the old man. Streucker mutters a thank you to the two youths before sitting down next to Calhoun.

:calhoun: “Alright, boy. Who are we killing today?”

You clear your throat. “Alright, thank you, Sergeant. Our first assignment today will be Operation Silent Thunder. This is our first combat drop.” All the kids in the crowd clap and cheer. “Yes, yes, very exciting I know. Let me quickly introduce your pilot for today and probably for the rest of these operations. Ensign Fina DeSilva, callsign “Big Sky”. She’ll be”

:desilva: “Hi, everybody! My name’s Fina! Oooh! Hi, Lilia! Hi, Fiona!”

:posey: “Oh great, the dork…”

:desilva: “Anyway, I will be flying your X-1 Skyranger. We are adapting it out of the old cargo transports. Currently we only have one for… the entire army but we should have more coming soon! So. Anyone else excited!? I’m excited!”

“Ensign.” You tap her on the shoulder, and she quickly steps to the side. She clears her throat, a light blush to her cheeks and now a serious expression upon her. Kids. “Alright. Let me cut to the chase. As you might have already guessed. Sergeant Calhoun, Privates Posey, Tran, Streucker, and Reyes will be deploying on today’s op. Our first location is Farming Outpost 02 that was taken over by the natives just yesterday. Job is simple, take it back. Eliminate all hostiles or rout them from the mission sector.”

:tran: “Excuse me. Um, how many are there?”

“According to our most recent xenograph readings, there are at least fifteen workers.”

:streucker: “How big are they?”

:reyes: “Probably big enough to split Buster in half.” You see Buster go a little white at that statement, sinking into his chair as everyone takes a nervous chuckle.

“Size varies though if our satellites are reporting right, if you stand them up they’ll be as big as six feet. Sat imagery is also reporting some sort of carapace armor, kind of like a cockroach. We don’t know much else about how they look or how they operate beyond them stealing food and raiding our farms.”

:calhoun: “So how do we deploy then?”

“Good question. Sky’s the limit here. Let’s see…”

|> Hi, darling. Since there appears to be no anti-aircraft artillery in the area, you are free to deploy within the entire mission sector. It appears the natives are focused around the barns and the silos, leaving the open fields unattended. The equipment appears to have been cleared out, leaving only a four-foot high fence between each field as the only pieces of cover in the open.

|> The natives are not confirmed to have any sort of weaponry beyond what they may biologically possess, so you may already have the advantage at range.

|> Our weaponry should be superior to theirs. Although many of our weapons are still relics from the before-time, they are still maintained and have been modified for use aboard the Colony. Soldiers will autonomously choose their preferred weapons, however you may also manually equip them with a weapon if you so need to.

|> The plan is up to you now, sweetheart!

are the fields grown or barren? if grown then grown with what? full corn field while it wont stop bullets would be a great place to sneak through to get the drop on something.

what weapons do you all have?
>>

>>673045
|> The fields were stripped of all stalks of corn when the foragers came. Therefore there is nothing stopping my little darlings from being caught out in the open by the natives, and vice versa.

|> Weaponry for this Operation consists of:

|> "Big Brother": H&K G3A3 Rifle, Colt. 45 M1911
|> "Pops": H&K G3A3 Rifle
|> "Tricky": H&K G3A3 Rifle
|> "Joker": H&K G3A3 Rifle
|> "Buster": H&K G3A3 Rifle

|> Current available weapons in the armory include:

|> x2 L7A2 FN MAG Machine Gun
|> x1 FN SCAR SSR

|> We are currently underdeveloped in terms of available weaponry and tactical support. Basic grenades for example are unavailable due to their danger aboard the Colony. All weapons acquired from the before-time have been well-maintained and modified for use aboard the Colony, which includes:

|> Slightly reduced muzzle velocity
|> Use of lightweight materials that enhance carrying ability while maintaining durability.
|> Auto-focusing optics allowing easier targeting.

|> Currently, the Research Department is attempting to develop new weaponry while Engineering is providing funding and manpower into weaponry and armor for the Colonial Army.

someone should take the scar and will effectively be the sniper. whoever has the best score on the range should do that. someone else should take one of the machine guns.

plan currently is to land to the south of the fields. sniper will set up on the east most edge of the bottom fence. machinegun and rest of squad moves up to next fence, where machinegun will stop and set up. remaining three will then head northwest and circle around to above the north-most fence and then proceed east, using the silos as additional cover. this is only the preliminary plan, if something unexpected happens it will change.

I disagree, I think we shouldn't equip people with weapons that they aren't familiar with on the first mission.
After this, we should have every soldier available try their hands with the sniper on the shooting field, for at least like 5 session, that should tell us who has a talent for it. Then we can have him start using it.
If you really want to have someone snipe this mission, then I suggest considering one of the more "squishy" ones for it, as well as considering the general skill with weapons on the range as you said.
I don't think the machine gun is needed.
>>673051
So yeah, I say leave equipment as is, I don't want them fumbling with reloading a sniper in the field, plus this doesn't seem like a map where there are good sniping positions.
I suggest dropping around the side of the fields that the barns and silos aren't facing if possible, otherwise, do it a good distance away so we can set up and get ready to mow down anyone who tries to rush us.

“Right. Here’s the plan. Calhoun will take Reyes and Streucker northwest around the farms up and use the silos for cover. Before anybody says anything. Buster and Tran will take one of the Machine Guns and Sniper Rifles. Sniper will be in the back, that’ll be Tran. Buster, you’ve got the big gun.”

:posey: “Yes! Can’t wait to give those bugs some new airholes, eh Big Bro?”

:calhoun: “Shut it, Buster. There a catch to this?”

“The idea is that you’ll be leading a flanking force. Buster and Tran will suppress the enemy and force them into cover. There won’t be too much cover for you all, so you three have to advance as fast as possible, sprint and get to the silos. There, you’ll take them out at close range.”

:vandenakker: “Close range? And what happens if that doesn’t work?”

:posey: “Hey, who asked you, George? You’re not even on this mission!”

:vandenakker: “I’m just saying. Our guns aren’t built for armor penetrating, living on a space station for decades after all.”

:streucker: “George has a point. Maybe we should sit at range and let them come to us.”

“Well, too bad that George is not your Tactical Adviser. I am. And I say this is the plan. These are just simple workers we’re talking about, okay? Nobody has to die today, I’m not saying someone has to die today…” You slap yourself upside the forehead. Forget it. “Whatever. Just head to the armory, get your guns and equipment. You launch in thirty.” Everyone stands up, carefully squeezing through the door as they mingle and converse about the mission at hand.

Buster however quickly walks over to you.

:posey: “Those workers can’t split people in half, right?”

You shake your head. “They’re probably just trying to scare you. You’re the youngest here after all.”

:posey: “Those goons think they know everything. See you after the mission.”

And with that, Buster is the last of the newly formed Colonial Army to leave. DeSilva smiles happily, patting you on the shoulder.

:desilva: “Can’t wait to squish some bugs! I’ll be in the hangar!”

She happily jogs off, putting her helmet on.

Honestly, neither can you.

|> Sweetie, Big Sky has touched down on the mission site. Strike One is now taking formation.

:calhoun: “Squad! Form up! Tricky, take position! Buster, you too! Everyone else follow me!”

:reyes: “Gee, Calhoun! I guess this is one of those days you aren’t such a total hardass, huh?”

:calhoun: “Joker, your rifle’s gonna have a good look at your lower intestine if you don’t stop with the jokes! We are facing humanity’s first enemy in decades! Now get moving!”

|> Sweetie, Calhoun’s team is currently moving up in position. The Native forces have been confirmed as still residing around the silos and barn, and apparently are not acknowledging the arrival of Strike One.

:posey: “This is Buster! I’ve taken position, ready to fire on your word!”

:tran: “Tricky in position, ready to fire.”

:calhoun: “Big Brother here. We’ve passed the second fence, currently moving to circle around north fence. Bugs are not moving, repeat, they do appear to realize who we are!”

Sniper observe what the bugs are doing, see if anything tricky is goin on.
If no, then wait until the team passes the last fence, then open fire to draw attention and get them to try to find cover while being flanked. Forward team stay as hidden as they can until it's time to open fire.

“Stay alert, Strike One. Continue as planned. Buster, Tricky, hold fire until they’re past the last fence.”

:posey: “Ugh, copy.”

:tran: “Copy.”

You watch the satellite imagery advance slowly as Calhoun and company cross the next fence.

:calhoun: “This is Big Brother, I think a couple of the bugs caught sight of us, how copy?”

“Copy. Continue.”

You watch however something very slimy explode across the map. It strikes Streucker, knocking him back.

:streucker: “Agh! Agh! I’m hit! My armor’s burning up!”

:calhoun: “Streucker’s down, everyone hit the dirt! Fire! Fire!”

Oh no. The workers are suddenly scrambling to cover. Seven go towards the silos and duck behind them, practically hugging their bodies up against the walls. The other six head inside of the barn, where your satellites can’t see them. Damn it!

The workers appear to be spitting some sort of acid at the soldiers. Decent range too, but not very accurate considering they’re not hitting the rest of Calhoun’s men. Tran and Buster in particular seem to be out of the question for them. You watch as one of the enemy signatures disappears.

:tran: “Got one!”

:posey: “Damn it! That one was mine!”

:calhoun: “Focus! Pops, are you alright!?”

:streucker: “Agh! This slimey goop is all over me!”

:reyes: “Hey, I bet Buster’s got experience with that!”

:calhoun: “Congrats, Reyes, you just volunteered to drag Streucker out of the line of fire! Get him out of here now! Buster, Tran, shift your fire right!”

Your hands shake as you watch Reyes slowly drag himself through the muddy field and grab onto Streucker. He’s forced to crouch up and pull Streucker’s writhing form slowly eastbound, away from the bugs. Calhoun meanwhiles provides supporting fire from a crouching position as well.

:posey: “I thought these bugs were stupid!”

:calhoun: “Shut up and shoot! Central!”

He’s referring to you obviously.

:calhoun: “Bugs have got some sort of rapid acid spit and in solid cover! Need orders!”

what is the silo made of? if wooden then it should be possible to shoot through it, buster, just keep shooting in a wide sweep, pretend you are trying to cut the silo with your gun, could get lucky, tran, keep a watch and shoot anything that pokes it's head out.

Pops drop the armor and retreat further away, bring the armor along if possible, try to get out of range of the venom and provide supporting/covering fire for the front lines, otherwise take potshots at anyone who pokes their head out of the barn.
Front line Move further up and away, take advantage of our superior range.
Sniper hold fire until target is in clear sight, except if trying to save an ally.
Machine gunner provide suppressing fire to the silos if opportunity arises, or shred the silo if it seems advantageous.
I tried to plan to make a visual representation as well.

We need samples to know what kind of substance they're using and design medical and countermeasures responses for it. That's a low priority as compared to avoiding casualties and clearing out the enemy. The damaged armour should at least be helpful for guessing what they're using so drag that along.
Higher priority is slow fallback--we don't know if the enemy has reinforcements or where they'd be coming from if so, and I'd really rather not be caught in their crossfire. By all means punish the enemy for sticking their heads out but keep an eye for enemy arriving in-theatre from other directions.

:calhoun: “Get that fucking armor off of him, Reyes! And get him into cover! Buster, Tricky! Cover us!”

:reyes: “Will do!”

:streucker: “Ah! This stuff burns!”

:reyes: “Relax, Pops! And hey, don’t tell Pilla about any of this, she’s never going to understand why I had to strip an old man in the heat of the moment.”

:streucker: “Agh… it’ll be our secret, you jackass.”

:calhoun: “Cut the chatter, Buster, we need suppressive fire now!”

:posey: “I don’t even know what that is, Big Bro!”

:calhoun: “It means fucking shoot at them until they stop trying to shoot at us!”

One of the enemy signatures disappears, another confirmed kill for Tran.

:tran: “I got another one.”

:posey: “Damn it, Tricky! Stop making me look bad!”

:calhoun: “Good work, Tricky! We’re falling back now!”

You watch however as the one big dot on the barn now starts bleeding several workers out its rear and behind the southernmost barn. They are trying for a flanking maneuver.

:tran: “I see more bugs, Buster, you need to get down!”

Venom spit starts splattering all around Buster, inaccurate, but enough to put her head down.

:posey: “Ah fuck! Fuck! FUCK! Get me out of here! They’re pinning me!”

|> Private Fiona Posey’s heartrate is accelerating! My little sweetheart is beginning to panic!

:calhoun: “We’re losing control of the situation! We need orders!”

everyone start heading for the southern wall with tran. they will have to cross open ground for their spit to be in range. buster if you can't go south go west a little first to get out of range while still being in cover.
tran watch for any trying to get in closer.

Posey head west, out of range of the bugs while trying to take down some of them. Sniper target the bugs that shot at Posey.
If Pops and Reyes get the armor off, and if they can, try to get a few surprise shots in on the bugs behind the barn as well, otherwise just have Pops hang back a couple paces behind Reyes(since he has no armor) and focus on the bugs near the silos in the north.
Everyone try to keep out of their acid's range.
If you see one of them leave cover then take your chance.
(Sorry for the shitty diagram.)
