It's a pleasant day. Sunshine and happiness are all around as far as the eye can see.
Ray the dolx is certainly enjoying himself.
This day couldn't get any better.

Actually, Ray really wishes his super best buddy, Gordon the bear,
could be with him. But Gordy's been sick for sometime now you see and
he doesn't seem to be getting better.

Ray wants to visit his friend but he knows he's not brave enough to
enter the enchanted forest where Gordy lives.

Consume drugs until you are either brave enough or intoxicated enough to enter the enchanted forest.

Well Ray, with that kind of attitude you're never going to see your friend. Just what do you think bravery is, anyway? A lack of fear? Hardly. Bravery is doing something even when it scares you to do it.

So you've gotta ask yourself, Ray, which matters more to you: not facing your fear of the enchanted forest, or visiting your best friend, who could use your company?

Won't you do it for your Super best buddy?! He is probably alone and in need! What kind of friend you are?

Ray remembers the old dolx saying to stay away from the forest
but his friend needs him. Gordy's sickness is something that
can only be cured by true friendship. Even though Ray cannot afford a guide,
he will go into the forest to save his pal.

Pay! Pay the toll, Ray! But the troll is not happy.
He gives Ray a riddled choice.

When it says "goods you'll take" I thought it meant that you have to deliver (take) some goods to a certain place which sounds more feasible unless you have the skills to make things.

664375

There's no way of knowing which direction the inn lies so Ray simply
takes the path until he hits a fork in the road.
The names on the arrows are unfamiliar to him and they could
all equally be the name of the inn.

Well if we don't know where we're going anyway there shouldn't be any harm in giving the mysterious talking hole a few moments of our attention.

The guy in the hole
Might be the dark mole,
So what e'er they tell
Shall not bode thee well.
Best ask right away,
"To the Inn, which way?"
And journey down the opposite path!

That's probably the mole in that hole there, so ask them which way to the inn; then assume their answer is as blatant a lie as possible, and go down the exact opposite path--for example, if they say it's in Funch or Hob, then go down the Kato/Crowlin/Elkwood path.

A long, tiring walk later and Ray spots the first signs of a building.
The sign confirms that this is the inn the troll was talking about.
Ray only has to deliver the chest and then he can head over to see Gordon.
IF he knew where in the forest his house was.

"Once there were two friends of different countries at war."
So, I guess we know why the forest is dangerous. Or, this is all an allegory for a wartime situation, which would probably mean that Ray represents someone pressured into being a traitor.

It might be a good idea to have a peek inside of the box, before you hand it over to the horse--who knows what the troll actually put in there. Perhaps what the mole said was a warning, rather than a threat, and he wanted Ray to know what was inside the box, rather than wanting to find out for himself.

The awkward foal accepts the chest without a word. However, when Ray asks about the mole
she grows a worried look on her face and cautions Ray. The foal tells him that the box holds
very "important" goods though she wouldn't open it for fear of punishment by Moe the Crow.

She doesn't know anything about Gordon though someone inside probably does.
Ray dares not enter the inn since nearly everyone who is not a dolx holds negative opinions about his kind.

Groggy, the innkeeper looks at the dolx without much attention.
From him Ray learns that Gordon lives in the outskirts of Crowlin
which would only take a days walk if he goes through Kato.
Much to Ray's surprise the innkeeper offers Ray a room since the
dolx are considered detestable pests among civilized races.
