The half-siblings, May and August, are on a train ride to their new home.
They're on their way to move to the town where their godfather works - a calm little place called Eden, or so they heard.

:august03: "So I guess this is it, huh?"

:may01: "Yeah. This is it."

The train takes a strange route, that they've never seen before, even going through a forest; oddly, the rails are suspended instead of being built on the ground.

The siblings have no idea how long it's going to take to get to Eden - it could be hours more.

:rover01: "Sorry for bothering you, but would either of you... know what time is it? My watch seems to be broken."

It's some weird-looking guy.
Something about him stands out immediately - he has the ears and tail of a cat!? Now that's something you don't see every day...

What should May and August do?

Unless we're betting on him 'getting it a lot' when we bring up that he is clearly not human, lets just kind of let him know we're curious with our body language. Maybe look surprised? Nonetheless, give him the time. 8AM. Tell him he should get a time sticker like we have.

It takes them a moment to say anything; they're a bit too surprised to properly respond.

:may03: "I know what time it is. It's time to get a new watch."
:august02: "No. Oh my god, no. It's eight on the dot. I'm so sorry about her."

May really does wonder how August knows the time, but she has more pressing concerns at the moment. Namely the fact that this man has cat features. Why the hell does he have cat features????? This is not normal.
August just thinks it's kinda cool, honestly. He's just about to ask if he'd like to sit with them when he speaks up again.

:rover02: "Thank you very much, it seems like I'll be right on time! Would you mind if I hanged out with you guys for a bit? The train is terribly empty today! And I'd feel better with some company."

They just nod silently in response. He sits down, and looks at them with a smile. Not that he wasn't smiling before, but it looks a bit different, somehow. He seems awfully enthusiastic.
It makes them kinda nervous, and not because they think he's cute or anything like that.

:rover01: "You've been staring at me with a funny face, you know? We don't really need to hide, here, so if you guys want to show your true form it's not a problem~!"

Wait would that be a good thing or a bad thing to let them know you have no idea what there talking about? Eh, just play it safe for now and say the two of you are fine for now and just ask your godfather when you finally get to him and then change the subject before he can ask for more about it. Like asking him for his name.

He thinks you're cat people or something and are hiding it.

:may02: "Yeah, we can't change right now. In reality, I'm a dragon and he's an unicorn."
:rover02: "I see you've got a sense of humor! I'd be fun to be the world's last living dragon, I bet."

:rover01: "You can call me Rover. I don't really live anywhere, but I do travel to sorts of places! I'm meeting a friend in Eden, this time. Looks like we're stuck together for a bit longer, huh!"

Kind of sounds like a nice life...

:august02: "What can you tell us about Eden? We don't really know a lot about it."
:rover02: "Oh, you'll love it! It's such a good little town. The commercial area is always full of activity, and the people who live there are quite nice! Well, there's one or two unfriendly ones, but they're not that bad, honest. Most of the villagers are young, too. The only middle aged people you'll find are the mayor and some of the shopkeepers... Rover suddenly pulls up a bundle of papers from his pocket, and mutters to himself while searching for one piece in particular. When he finds it, he hands it to the siblings, unfolded.

:rover01: "Here, it's a map of Eden. I've been there enough times that I don't really need it anymore, but it might be useful to you guys."

Does he just carry maps around like that? Well, he is a wanderer, but...

:august02: "So how much longer for us to reach it?"

oh neat I didn't know it was near a beach. One question though about the map, what's the little pinkish circle next to the purple building near the left center of the map? I can kinda guess at everything else but I'm not really sure what to make of that.

August isn't sure he's okay with this! Time to compete for the catman's attention some more... Though he does have a very serious concern.

:august01: "Does, uh, Eden have any... human residents?"
:rover01: "About that... It used to, a few years ago, but they kind of disappeared. Lots of rumors as to what happened to them, but no concrete information. I'd like to think they just moved away without saying anything, but... some of the villagers might disagree."

Their godfather is supposed to pick them up, yeah, but he's kind of an airhead, and tends to stay up very late; there's a big possibility that he'll completely forget or sleep through it. They'll probably have to go find him at his place. Speaking of which...

:august01: "Hey, which one of these buildings is the museum? That's where our godfather works."
:rover01: "You mean Blathers!? I didn't know he had godchildren back in the city... I would've never guessed! Ahem, it's this one. Hard to miss!"
Rover picks up the map and points at a larger building, on the top left of the map, marked with a brown... owl? symbol. It looks like a fairly big building, so they should have no trouble finding it.

:may02: "Speaking of the map- This one here is a coffee shop, right? Is it any good?"
:rover01: "You have no idea! I've been to all sorts of places, and I just keep coming back for Brewster's coffee! I could take you guys there if you want to! Actually, I'm pretty sure he and Blathers are good friends, you should ask him to tell the story someday--!"
:may01: "Wh-- I get that you're excited, but please sit down!"

well it seems like a good thing we didn't tell him your human. Don't think he'd have minded but he doesn't really look like someone how can keep a secret. We're going to have to ask your godfather about this once we see him.

As for Rover, tell him the two of you are probably going to try and find your godfather and settle in first but if you're free later you might have some coffee with him before he takes off again.

Kinda want to find somewhere safe and learn thing before we start heading off around town but I also think we should try to make friends were we can... you know encase things aren't as nice as Rover is making them seem so we have people who would stick there necks out for us should we need help.

Maybe they all decided to screw any further games with the town, went into their homes (which are portals to pocket dimensions), and stayed inside for so long the outside houses fell to ruin.

A.K.A. They stopped playing.

:may01: "Pocket dimensions, huh...?"
:rover01: "Hm?"
:may01: "Oh, no, nothing! Just thinking out loud."

Yeah, making friends with the villagers is a good idea, but that can probably wait until they meet up with their godfather, maybe ask him how to stay safe, who's trustworthy and who isn't, et cetera... Boy, they're in quite a pickle.
Actually, wait a second, if there aren't any humans in the town, then... what the heck is their godfather!? He didn't seem any different from a human when they last met him. Or any of the times they met him. That's definitely something they're gonna need to clear up with him!

:august02: "Well, first things first, we have to find our godfather and settle in. But if we have a bit of free time later, maybe we could have some coffee together!"
:rover02: "Awesome! I'll try to wrap up quickly so we can hang out, yeah?"

Is-- is that a monkey? A legit monkey!?

He goes straight to the museum, and is somewhat impressed by how it looks from the inside. It's not that big, but it seems to have a nice variety of exhibits!
Fossils, paintings, insects, fish... Such an unique lineup.

On the far back, there seems to be a gift shop and... an observatory? That's interesting. May would probably like this, he thinks.
There is also a counter, right in front of a fancy, ornate clock, ticking softly and filling in the silence. Feels rather peaceful. Though the fact that it seems to be one minute ahead kinda bothers him.
Clocks are nice. I like clocks. August seems to like them too, so over-analyzing it is a win-win situation.

Oh, there's someone on the counter, sleeping.
Is... that uncle Blathers?

> Is the clock one minute ahead, or are we one minute behind?
August is absolutely sure that...!

......... He compromises, bringing the grandfather clock 30 seconds ahead, and adjusting ours 30 seconds behind.
That should... do it, shouldn't it?

"Hoo..."

Right. Back to the matter at hand! August then pokes his godfather in the least aggressive way possible. He still jumps like a little scaredy cat anyway, which at this point August wouldn't doubt he actually is one.

:blathers01: "WHO!?"
:august01: "Whoa, calm down, old man! It's just me!"
:blathers02: "...Oh, pardon me! If it isn't little August!"
:august02: "Hey, uncle Blathers. It's been a while. How's Celeste? She should be here too, right?"
:blathers01: "Indeed she is! Don't let her know I told you this, but she fell right asleep moments before morning came. We should let her rest a bit before we greet her!"
:blathers03: "I am not guilt-free, however... As I seem to have slept through out meeting time, as well. But I'm glad you made it here in one piece!"
:august03: "Eh, we already expected you'd miss it, you're almost nocturnal or something. But we were lucky someone gave us directions, too."

:blathers01: "Oh, that's right! If you wouldn't mind me asking, where is your sister? Don't tell me something bad happened!"
:august01: "Don't worry... Or maybe do worry. She went on a totally-not-a-date with some guy we met on the train. Rover, said his name was."
:blathers02: "Hoo!!!! I was indeed a bit worried there, but if it's Rover, then she should be fine. A blue tomcat, correct?"
:august02: "So you do know him! I was kinda worried he was making stuff up to get us to trust him, but I guess all's well."
:blathers02: "Oh, Rover is quite the sweet boy! He seems to be really good friends with the mayor, too. It's Rover's boyfriend you should be mindful of; a little prankster, that one. I don't think he'd hurt anyone, but... You know!"
:august01: "...Huh."

Suddenly August feels like he should just let May deal with that by herself.

:august03: "By the way, can you explain what the heck is going on? It sounds like you almost expected something bad to have happened to us. Also Rover is a cat or something?"
:blathers03: "Oh-hoo... Of course, of course. I didn't tell you before you came, because you would not have believed me... It's a long story, however. It would be better for your sister to hear it, too."

Agree that accurate clocks are the most important thing to concentrate on first, wouldn't want the bombs to go off either too early or too late. And there are other reasons why accurate time are important that have nothing to do with bombs, too.

You might want to ask about what happened to the humans that used to live here. And if that's related to the danger.

Also wait, our clock was at 8:29, and the grandfather clock was at 8:30. So you set our clock backwards 30 seconds, and the grandfather clock forwards 30 seconds? That seems to be a bit off there.

Gods, this is getting boring. I refuse to listen to this human's puns. You won't be mad if I switch things up a little bit, will you? Be a good sport will ya. The exposition part's coming up soon.

So MEANWHILE, SOMEWHERE ELSE!

May and her feline friend make their way down the path to the coffee shop. Rover seems to be blabbering about something or other.

:rover01: "...I started by travelling out of town, just for kicks, and when I realized I was already living this life. Riding the train to nowhere, seeing where it took me."
:may01: "Just like that? Left everything behind and started wandering?"
:rover02: "Yep! Just like that! I don't regret it one bit. I met lots of interesting people and found lots of cool places! I must say, I have a soft spot for Eden, though..."

:rover02: "Humans really are interesting, don't you think?"
:may02: "...I'm sure they are."

May then nods her head in appreciation, muttering a "thank you" as she passes by Rover, and walks into the coffee shop.

:may02: "Sooo, is there anything on the menu that you recommend?"

The atmosphere here feels nice, May thinks. There's a radio playing soothing music, the lights aren't too bright or too dark, it looks kinda different from the "industrialized" coffee shops back in the city.

There's three people plus the barista (that looks like he might be a really, really large bird) here... Looks like a cat, a dog and... maybe a ram...?

May thought there wasn't much else about this town that could surprise her, bit... Yeah, she's extremely surprised. She just kinda freezes up, and waits to see what Rover's gonna do.

:rover02: "...Pffft, what is that!?"
:blancadraw3: "What? Is something wrong with my face?"

Wrong is kind of an understatement! What IS your face!?

:vesta02: "Hehe, I thought this would be a nice, welcoming face for Rover!"

The large bird man on the other side of the counter, who May assumes is Brewster, just nods in response. Not the most talkative type, huh? The dog person sat at the counter doesn't seem to be too chatty, either.

:vesta02: "I make the pastries and cakes and stuff! All of the munchies!"

May thinks Vesta is probably the fluffiest human being she's ever met. Er, animal. Or, what did Rover call them? "Beastmen"? Whatever the name is. She's the fluffiest of them. She has the most hair May's ever seen on a person's head at once.
From up close, her eyes are kinda glassy and scary, though...

Blanca cleans up... his face. It kinda looks like a whiteboard, but awkwardly skin-colored. Is that a mask? Or does Blanca... not... have a face?
May wonders if she should question it. Would it be rude? Or weird? Is this a normal thing here??
While she's thinking about it, Rover nudges her towards the table his friend's sat at; he himself sits next to Blanca, where Vesta had been just a minute ago. When May sits across from them, Vesta hands them a large sheet.

:vesta02: "So, here's the menu! Today's featured fruit for the cakes and tarts is peach, but we have strawberry shortcake as well. Take your time, baaaffo!"

Huh, this seems pretty good for a small coffee shop in the middle of nowhere.

I just noticed Blanca doesn't have any whites in his eyes. Is the whole face drawn on? A blank face would kind of be appropriate for the name.

>May wonders if she should question it. Would it be rude? Or weird?
Dunno. It might be a little rude, but you're a kid. People give you a lot of leeway when it comes to asking about things you've never seen. ("I've never met someone who had to draw on their face, before!").

>May thinks Vesta is probably the fluffiest human being she's ever met. Er, animal. Or, what did Rover call them? "Beastmen"? Whatever the name is.
Just say person. It's non-specific, and is less likely to get you in trouble or cause a verbal slip up.

>What the heck is this currency supposed to be...?
That is something you can ask after.

May briefly thinks about it, but she doesn't really have any reason to believe Blanca isn't a he. She'll admit that the whole getup is weird; if only his chest wasn't so flat she'd immediately be fooled into thinking he was a she. Maybe that's the point...?
Anyway, back to the matter at hand-

:may01: "Excuse me, um... I don't really know what this currency is. Do you not take dollars?"

:may03: "...What? That's a silly name."

Oh, didn't think of that. If the weirdness is part of an imperfect human disguise, you sound judgmental or stuck up asking after it with your perfect 'disguise'. Whups.

Gotta check that hoity toity disguise privilege.
