You've woken up one morning in a small bedroom. Across from the bed is a drawer with a mirror, and a door just to the right of it. There is little else in the room aside from a closet next to the bed and various clothes scattered on the floor. For now, you wish to ignore your mess and start your day. You remember that it is the day to start your elemental training, and the first thing on your list of tasks is to forge a basic weapon from your element.

Your prior night of drinking has left you in a haze, which does not bode well for your memory at the moment. It doesn't matter as I will explain.

You are an Endringer. You are much like a Human, even down to your appearance. You look completely like a Human, yet there is something different. For one, Endringern have two additional elements that Humans don't, and secondly, you can shapeshift into an animal.

Though before we get into any of the animal stuff, what are you like as a human?

What is your sex?

As an Endringer, you worship a set of gods called the Dodecaeon, also known as "The Twelve" in common parlance. Each of the gods have an influence over one month, and one of the six elements. It's time for you to remember which one you serve.

Tsura the Blinding: Takes the form of a rabbit, and is the goddess of illusions. She is a Light elemental. Ruling month (Tsuria) is equivalent to January.

Avira the Cyclonic: Takes the form of a dragonfly, and is the goddess of storms. She is an Air elemental. Ruling month (Aviria) is equivalent to February.

Nerina the Indulgent: Takes the form of an otter, and is the goddess of temptation. She is a Water elemental. Ruling month (Nerinia) is equivalent to March.

Karayan the Warlord: Takes the form of a wolf, and is the god of war and death. He is a Dark elemental. Ruling month (Karayanis) is equivalent to April.

Akamu the Rot: Takes the form of a stag, and is the god of decay. Is an Earth elemental. Ruling month (Akamis) is equivalent to May.

Phlegon the Destroyer: Takes the form of a fox, and is the god of destruction. Is a Fire elemental. Ruling month (Phlegonis) is equivalent to June.

Nahor the Seer: Takes the form of a lion, and is the god of guidance. Is a Light elemental. Ruling month (Nahoris) is equivalent to July.

Ilmatar the Inquisitor: Takes the form of an eagle, and is the god of inquisition. Is an Air elemental. Ruling month (Ilmataris) is equivalent to August.

Glyndwr the Saviour: Takes the form of a dolphin, and is the god of healing. Is a Water elemental. Ruling month (Glyndwris) is the equivalent of September.

Kalypso the Enigma: Takes the form of a bat, and is the goddess of stealth. Is a Dark elemental. Ruling month (Kalypsia) is the equivalent of October.

Matrona the Earthmother: Takes the form of a snake, and is the goddess of fertility. Is an Earth elemental. Ruling month (Matronia) is the equivalent of November.

Hourig the Survivor: Takes the form of a horse, and is the goddess of survival. Is a Fire elemental. Ruling month (Hourigia) is the equivalent of December.

So, which month were you born under, my Endringer friend?

Oh right! You are a girl with long red hair, blue eyes, and white skin. You're still aching with exhaustion and not wanting to get out of bed.

You have to remember your birthday in order to remember your element, and you remember you are a Kalypso worshipper. This grants you the ability called "Shadowflage", which allows you to blend into anyone's shadow. Though, this power may not work very well at midday or in areas brightly lit from directly above.

You stare at yourself in the mirror, and as I assessed earlier, you look no worse for wear. Though, there is something missing from you, and it slowly becomes apparent that you have forgotten your own name. Maybe it's time to remember what your name is? You do remember that your last name is Hempen, which indicates that your ancestors either had a grim sense of humour, or they befell a terrible fate. However, you can't seem to remember your first name.

What in the shadows of Kalypso is your first name?

>I'm afraid I don't remember that, Kalypso. Sir. Ma'ma. Your esteemed Enigma.

It's ma'am if you want to be most informal. A slip of the tongue has confused you, and I meant to say that you will be embarking on the quest.

Though, you probably completed the most difficult trial of all, which is waking up in the morning after a party with your friends, no?

>You mean the basic weapon forging thing, right? We will hopefully be remembering how to do that any minute now.

Ahem, yes, that is what I mean. It's simple, really: we will choose a material to make your weapon out of first, and then I'll guide you from there. This is one of the twelve trials of an Endringer, each one designed to please one of the gods. You've chosen Karayan's task, which is said to be the most difficult. Quite the work ethic you have! Though, it looks like from your weight that you might have already completed Nerina's! *Pokes belly*

I'll explain the materials and what one can make from them, and in no time, we will be making a weapon and building it up to be better than anything Karayan's children could possibly forge in a pinch. The material you choose will affect also your magic.

Moonlight: Purifying, but fickle and wanes in power with the moon. Can be used to craft projectile weaponry, such as guns. Can be used to craft animal familiars and bless Dark objects. Can be used to create pocket-dimension portals to allow a user to hide.

Blood: The strongest of all Dark materials, objects crafted from it have a strong bond to their owner. Any change in the owner's allegiance (for good or for bad) will be reflected in the crafted instrument. Can be used to craft swords and other offensive melee weaponry. Can be modified to allow a body to dissolve itself completely into its surroundings.

Shadow: Resilient material, though will not work if the environment is not appropriate for shadows. Can be used to craft defensive armour that can double as weaponry. Can be used to craft animal companions. Can be emulated by a Dark elemental's body to disguise oneself, or can be taken on like camouflage in the dead of night.

You may choose one.

This is the aetherflower. It emits gas every night, and is the basis of all Endringer weapons creation rituals. It is by far the easiest ingredient to obtain. It is found in the deep woods in the Scarred Wastes that lie between Tsava and the Northernlands. You may have to battle a Demon to obtain it.

Next ingredient is water from a lake that has been freshly touched by the full moon. Luckily for you, there is a full moon tonight, so it may be your best bet to find first. Stile Lake has an unobstructed view of the sky, and the beams of the moon will touch the water.

However, Stile Lake is also home to...well...I won't spoil it for you.

You have to keep in mind that I will be fighting alongside you, and I will do my best to tenderize it. But also keep in mind that in this form, I'm only a fraction as powerful as my true form, since I split myself up into many so I can serve all my followers.

>What do we use to fight while we are still in the process of making our weapon?

I'm sure we can find one in the house somewhere to tide us over until we find something better. There will be more than just Demons to fight.
>And while we will be creating our own weapon, maybe we can get someone to loan us theirs? Surely we have a smart friend who made a really good one they'd be willing to part with in exchange for a favor?

There may be someone who can help us. Your childhood friend David may be able to help us. He's a Karayan-born, and can make weapons permanently out of his material of choice due to his ability. He may have something for us. Though, he lives in Regenstadt.

>easiest ingredient first

That may not be a good idea. The Scarred Wastes are very much north of here, and we may not return in time to get the moonlit water from Stile Lake. We could retrieve it after, though.

>Might want grab a backpack, something warmer to wear at night, and something to contain the water. A temporary weapon would be nice too, also some breakfast. Time to eat a bagel!

well we've been to the
-Bathroom
-Your Bedroom
-Kitchen

which leaves us with the
-Sitting Room
-Basement
-Master Bedroom
-Spare Room (formerly Brother's Room)
-Study (Locked)
-Attached Garage (Locked)
still to explore.
I'd say either the master bedroom or your brother's old room since they might have left something useful behind. After that try the basement and unless we find the keys to either of the looked rooms hit the sitting after that.

I suppose we could poison something with the drain cleaner, but I don't see a pressing reason to, right now.

You think to yourself if the drain cleaner might be used to poison something, but you decide against it since there is no need right now.

You walk to the master bedroom, where your mother had slept when she was alive.

The sight inside frightens you. What do you do now?

Do what all good adventurers do, pay respects then loot the body.

Oh geeze. What happened to your mother? When did this happen?

>what do
Her remains were never cleared and treated with the proper respect. You don't have a priest or a coffin, but you do have an avatar of your god, present. Seems to me this might be a good time to pay your respects.

Pray over her body, and say some words. (And if roguelikes have taught me anythings, then your god will accept her and the remains will vanish into the shadows).

...not sure if that's consecrating or desecrating the room, considering who you worship, thought.

You approach the body in the room. You have the clear intent to examine her body for anything useful, and to say a quick prayer to the Dodecaeon for her safe arrival into the afterlife.

You see, first of all, that despite all the blood, she'd died from hanging. The blood was merely there due to a clumsy failed attempt to dismember the body for disposal.

From the intense smell, it seems that the body had been dead for over a week, but the master bedroom was empty yesterday.

As your fingers touch her torn dress, her eyes suddenly open, and she lets out a blood-curdling scream.

well now, I think this is a good time to take out the wooden sword and defend yourself. Also

the fuck? Please tell me it wasn't you who tried that and besides isn't there someone you call who would remove the body, like the police or something?

Kalypso, can you confirm whether we are actually seeing this? Rotting bodies appearing inexplicably then screaming sounds a lot like a hallucination.

In the meanwhile, lets jump out of arm's reach then try to talk to her. If that doesn't yield anything check whether the blood trail is still fresh and where it leads.

>her eyes suddenly open, and she lets out a blood-curdling scream.
She's not dead? She's undead?

Look to your goddess for guidance, she should know more about the supernatural than you.

>The blood was merely there due to a clumsy failed attempt to dismember the body for disposal.
Typically one cuts down hanging victims by severing the rope, not by dismemberment. Although I suppose we can't fault you for not acting rationally, in the circumstances.

Can you apply knife to rope? (If you can't reach, can you preform a combo attack with your bat's help to get high enough?).

AH a zombie, jump away from the undead spawn of evil!

Okay, try to calm her down. You might be able to gain a subordinate if you can help her survive her new undead status.

If she's hopelessly feral, just kill her in self-defense.

I can and do confirm you are in fact seeing your own mother coming back to life and screaming.

What? No, you didn't do this to your own mother! You didn't even know she was in here until now! In fact, she hadn't been as you recall from earlier in the week.

You cut the rope from around your mother's neck, and she still remains standing. She groans a little bit, almost like a zombie, and you're far from prepared to deal with a zombie despite your arsenal.

"Mum?" You say calmly.

In a strained, gurgling voice, she replies back.

"Wilma...the study."

You notice that her strength had faded when she'd talked. Maybe if she talked less, she could be valuable to you.

What do you do now?

How strange... alright, new task. Get into the Study. Time to find the key. Ask her to point towards the key, if she knows where it is. If not, then we'll have to go find it. Are the keys to the house in her pockets, perhaps?

My guess is that she is some kind of ghost, and talking uses up whatever energy ghosts run on faster.

That works.

ok I'm going to throw my vote in with asking Kalypso exactly what the hell is going on here because this sure as hell isn't normal.

Looks like you have your first follower. Macabre as it is, she's obviously not in control of the possession of your mother's corpse.

First things first: find a way to anchor the spirit to your mother's corpse more permanently. Then find a way to preserve the corpse without overly limiting muscle control.

Ask about how much she remembers, and what she can do for you. If she asks why she is obligated to follow you, explain to her carefully that she is wearing your mother's face, which has a SERIOUS toll. If she pays the debt of stealing your mother's body, she is indeed free to leave.

Be sure to give her some appropriate gear. She has rights and free will as a person, even though she is indebted to serve you.

Take your mother's hand, tell her she doesn't have to talk, and lead her to your study.

And yes, please this. You have something confusing and distressing and impossible happening in front of you, and you have your god right there. This is the kind of thing people turned to gods for in the first place.

You ask your mother for the key to the study, and she searches her dress pockets for it. She produces a small silver key, though the key is for the basement, but maybe the study key could be found there. Your father was very secretive about his study and what he did in it.

You trust that this revenant mother of yours will not harm you, so you give her the wooden practice sword. It's light enough for her to carry, and could be defended against if she betrays you for whatever reason.

You turn and ask what is going on. You are right to question this; this is actually your mother's corpse, inhabited by her spirit that refuses to leave for some reason. Technically she's dead, and her body will decay as any dead body is wont to do, so there needs to be a way to preserve her before letting her join in on the quest.

What do you do now?

>so there needs to be a way to preserve her before letting her join in on the quest.
There are magical ways to preserve the dead (and undead), aren't there? Seems like the kind of thing a dark-element god of stealth would be good at (concealing a dark thing, letting it blend in). Or if we get our moonlight powers working- would an animated corpse count as a dark object we could bless? Maybe we could keep her fresh that way.

Either way, this kind of thing seems in keeping with the elements we chose. It should be feasible.

>What do you do now?
Go to the study. You're not about to ignore the dying, er, dead words of your mother.
>>
No. 624946 ID: d3be40

Formaldehyde. Lots and lots of formaldehyde.

Or some bee honey, which has a slow decomposition rate. You'd have to get it in her entire body somehow but bee honey doesn't spoil easily, which is really weird but also effective. (The secret is that it's a sugar environment that most bacteria and viruses cannot survive in, preventing decomposition by cellular attacks. Half-life decay, not so much.)

Look, just preserve her body in a coffin for the moment; you need to find a doctor or taxidermist who can deal with this, but you need her body to be as fresh as possible for maximum preservation. As tormenting as this is going to be for your mother, would you rather have her constantly freak out at her own rotted organs?

You're likely going to need a therapist by the end of this quest.

You got a key to the basement, go there and look for the key to the study.
>>

outside of magic not sure what you could do and with both measures I don't know where you're going to find something or someone to actually help.

Anyways how urgent is this little side quest? I ask because dead bodies don't just turn to dust over night so I think we can explore the basement for now but I would like to know how long we have if we need to go out and try to find someone or something for the side quest.
