INTO THE DEPTHS: Thread 1

It is a calm, peaceful village; but everything is changing.

The village of Rullus has always been a simple place, free of the troubles many lowtowns have. But recently, the guard have been stepping up. The deep things have been appearing in the tunnels near the town, and the people are growing restless. There are murmurings that the town may need to evacuate soon, but most people outside the circle don't know much about what is going on.

Toget loves this town, and doesn't want to leave. He knows that not all of his friends could make it, and not everyone could even take the same routes out. There have been no official announcements about what is going on from the council, but everyone knows that something big is going down.

Toget, like most Sado, is very large and strong. He is in very good shape, and has an adventurous spirit, but little practical experience. His parents are in the town guard, and he has done his fair share of sparring down at the barracks.

Toget has a friend whose father is in the town council, who might know something about what is going on. He could also try speaking to council members himself, or even try to spy and figure things out in a clandestine manner. Though he lacks many of the skills required for the latter.

Hmm. Let's start your investigation by talking to your friend.

Ask your friend first. It doesn't prevent you from trying the other options.
>>
No. 504493 ID: 9ddf68

might as well hit the easier options first before you start moving up to the more difficult ones.

start with talking to your friend and if that doesn't yield anything worthwhile then try talking to one of the council members if you can and if all else fails then you can try sneaking.

Toget decides to go see his friend Livelle. She isn't at home, but he has a pretty good idea where to find her.

He heads to a small pool just outside town, where she is relaxing in the water. It's usually pretty hard to rouse her in this state, but Toget already knows the trick to it.

Hi there Livelle! What's up?

Oh, hello Toget. I WAS relaxing. Why are you here again?

Toget isn't exactly sure how to go about this conversation. Livelle seems kind of annoyed by the interruption, which come to think of it is pretty much her normal response to this sort of greeting

Whoa, I hope that's just playful tomfoolery between you two, because most of us would consider it mean! Well lets ask her what she thinks of the situation, she's got your back right?

Go like "hey have you heard about the evacuation order?" and then explain that you don't really want to leave, and you wanna find out what's going on.
>>
No. 504509 ID: 9ddf68

ask her if she has heard anything about what is appearing in the tunnels and anything to do with a evacuation order and her thoughts on it, if she ask why you are asking just say you are hearing things and are starting to get a little nervous about actually having to leave the village and was wondering if she had any insight on these topics.
>>

Ask if she knows about what is happening, if she doesn't know ask what would be the best place to spy on the council members. Also ask if she wants to spy on the council with us.

Toget and Livelle have been meeting like this for years. She's never complained before. At least not seriously.

They climb up out of the stream, and Livelle starts to put the rest of her clothes back on.

Well, it's about all the Talk going around. About how everyone's going to have to abandon the village? I know that your dad is on the council and I wanted to see if you knew what was going on?

Yeah uh ... I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to talk about any of that. Panic and all.

Come on, you can tell me. We go back so far! You know I won't go spreading stuff around.

What are you talking about? You will tell literally anyone who will talk to you.

Yeah, okay, that's fair. But nobody ever believes me but you and sprout anyway.

That's not the ... okay, look. I know that you're not going to drop this. But you need to not tell anyone, okay? Not even sprout.

Geez, fine. Just, what's going on?

Okay so, the deep things started showing up way more often. They also seem to be all whipped up like something's got them all freaked out.

Wait so they're gonna overrun the town or something? Can't the guard handle it? I'll just sign up and help out.

No just ... just shut up and listen. You asked me, right?

yeah okay ... sorry. I'm listening.

It's just, the guard can handle it now. Sometimes there are just more of the things. But they've been coming for a while, and people think there might be a swell coming. If the depths come up, we HAVE to leave. Even the Oldons have been breaking their camp way earlier than they usually do.

Whoa, really? Those guys have been spending the season here forever haven't they?

Since before Rullus was even here, yes. The town started because of people setting up along the Oldon's routes. That's probably why the council is so worried, this just seems different.

...probably?

Well yeah, I don't really know much more than that. Just what I've overheard from dad.

So, that looks like it's probably all Livelle knows. Toget isn't sure where to go from here.

Let's go find out what's riling them up! Then stop it.
>>

Huh. So there are more monsters around, and they think way more than anyone can handle will be coming. That's not a good thing.

Thank Livelle for telling you, and privately resolve to keep your word, and not spout about this. She's right- people panicking would be bad.

Now you have an idea why the evacuation is being planned. But what can you do about things in the deep? I mean, maybe if you stopped them coming... but how could anyone do that?
>>
No. 513236 ID: 9ddf68

by swell does she mean that this place might flood or does she mean that there might be a swell of monsters that would overrun the village?

Because if she means the monster are just coming up then it might help if someone could find out what's pushing them, if it's just water, well there isn't much you can do to stop a flood, especially if you're underground.

You could also ask what she thinks of all of this.
>>

You can escape with your village from the swell. Just make sure that no matter what you do, you never go INTO THE DEPTHS

Given the circumstances, there are two main avenues you could use to resolve the situation.

1.Stop the Source: Find what is making the deep things come up, and negate it. This is likely suicidal, if the deep things are dangerous enough that the entire village might have to evacuate.

2.Evacuation Plans: If evacuation is likely, then make sure it proceeds as smoothly as possible. Plan out possible routes of departure and destinations, and work to see them implemented. While this plan might mean leaving the village behind, it focuses on getting as many people and supplies out as safely possible when/if the time comes.

And then I said goodbye, and came to let you know what was going on!

Look stretch, I appreciate that ya like to blather on, but I'm tryin to work here.

Yeah but what do you think abou-

I think that if yer gonna hang around while I'm workin' you should help me carry this stalk into the shop. Also I'd say slick probably told ya not to tell me any of this in the first place.

Well ... maybe she sort of said SOMETHING about not telling anyone, but this is important stuff, right?

Iduno. Maybe? Whaddaya want me to do about it?

Sprout seems to be in a pretty sour mood. He never did really like it when Toget bothered him at work. Toget isn't sure whether he should keep trying to talk to him about stuff or just leave and come back later.

>>513236

As Toget understands it, the world is basically like a big bucket. And all of the evil sort of settles to the bottom. But that also means that the evil basically always rises up, and the area it's filled in is called 'The Depths.' A 'swell' is a thing that is talked about in legends and stuff, where the depths just rise up really far and really fast.

And really, if a swell has already started and the legends are true, evacuating the village probably won't do any good at this point.

Ask him to help you prepare to go down there and stop it.
>>
No. 519308 ID: 9ddf68

well if you're bothering him at work you might as well help him a bit, maybe see if he would have anything that might help you out since you seem to be planing to go down there and see if you can't stop this thing or at the very least slow it down so if everyone does evacuate then you would at least be buying them time.

Bad Toget! No spouting!

>As Toget understands it, the world is basically like a big bucket. And all of the evil sort of settles to the bottom.
A flawless wordview, if I ever heard one.

>what do
Shut up and help Sprout for a little while. We need to stop and think. If all the evil has been stirred up from the bottom of the bucket, how can you stop it? Poke a hole in the bottom of the bucket? ...no, if the bad stuff is like sludge and the other stuff is water, then everything will drain out of the bucket. Find the thing doing the stirring and stop it? Grab a lid or something to cover the evil? Hmm.

Just tell Sprout "Well that's Swell. I'll just leave you and your Swell stalk to get along with your Swell work. It probably wasn't Swell news anyway, so don't worry about it! Spilling secrets that could panic the entire town just wouldn't be Swell."
