Dark Times have come upon the world.

Something is changing, and nobody knows quite what or quite why. Monsters have been creeping in from the outer wildlands, with strange and unknown monsters appearing all the time. And even now, when they would be most needed, the various Kingdoms have withdrawn their armies inward. Marshalling for a war that has not been declared, against a threat that nobody understands. They have been moving toward an ancient, untamed valley, skirmishing over land therein.

With these movements, the outer edges of civilization have fallen into chaos. Bandit-Lords and Mercenary Warbands use force to carve out empires of their own, claiming what they can in the absence of a military presence from the civilized lands.

Is there anything solid and heavy at hand? Like a huge boulder? If Tirya bowls that into the barricade then Solsa can vault over and finish them. Alternatively just swing the hammer flail by its chain over the top of the barricade.

Naiel stay back firing the acquired bow and manage the boar pressure. The stampede need to be stopped or pressed through depending on what resistance is left. Don't want to run over all the elves by mistake.

Tirya hurls her hammer through the face of the hastily erected barricade and yanks it back, ripping the whole thing asunder. The party and the piggies can now access the mine tunnel unhindered.

Alright, let's do that then.

...what are we here to do exactly?

Send Tirya in first after the boars, and get Solsa off that piggy. Use them as meat shields.

Delicious, succulent meat shields.

Solsa's already well through the breach before Tirya has a chance to tell her to wait up.

Solsa dismounts and notices a hobgoblin corpse at her feet, something isn't right about it.

making a quick examination, Solsa judges from the level of decay the corpse would have had to been here for days.

Solsa: "Not even hobgoblins are so filthy as to leave their dead to just rot on the floor . . . or perhaps I give them to much credit."

Ponder whether that wall was supposed to keep you Out or something big and spooky and necrophagous in.

Also maybe back up and rejoin the rest of yo crew.

The best case is that the elves are staging a successful revolt. The worst case is that they Dug Too Deep. Either way, we will need to go further to find out more.

Are there any creatures you know of that could cause decomposition like this?

As far as Naiel can tell, the hobgoblin's face isn't decayed at all.

She isn't aware of any sort of creature that could cause such a horrible infection. Maybe if they're mining cobalt it could cause this sort of malady? Naiel isn't too familiar with it, that is the demesne of kobolds.

Advancing down the tunnel, the group encounters more dead hobgoblins, alongside some dead elves. It is a grisly scene. Finally they round a corner and see into a chamber, where ... something ... is happening. The elves are cowering around the edges of the chamber, while what appears to be some sort of battle is wrapping up in the middle.

Featureless humanoid is rotting the other one's face off. Elves are adorably Keebler. Looks like we found whatever it is that did whatever it was to those hobgoblins.

We have a fencer, a giant, and a hunter, and that thing is obviously supernatural.

Have Tirya blow at it really hard while our fencer strikes at one of its limbs. If it's made up of some sort of particles, the first should have an effect. If it's solid and just sort of cloaked, the second should have an effect.

If neither is the case... then we have a problem, and we need to find out if it has some sort of physical component we can attack.

Hey now. That thing has only killed hobgoblins so far. Maybe it's friendly?

>>482535
Did it? We saw mention of dead elves but not if they were rotted...

If it's only been rotting hobgoblins and the elves are victims of the hobgoblins then we have a potential ally. If it's killing indiscriminately then maybe we should run away from the insubstantial murderer whose attacks can't be blocked or healed properly.

The elves definitely had the same sort of wounds as the hobgoblins. Whatever this thing is, it is not friendly.

>>483215

'Dammit Solsa!'

As Solsa goes down, Naiel draws back her looted bow and looses an arrow into the beast. The arrow lodges itself in its head and remains in place, it seems like the creature does have a solid form.

A wave of ... something reverberates through the room. It almost seems like a howl, though without any manner of sound.

It didn't like that. Do more ranged attacks; I believe Tirya's hammer should work too. Honestly, Solsa should stay out of it. Getting close to this thing is a Bad Idea.

Tirya lashes out at the creature with her chain hammer and tangles in in the chain. Now it can not move freely or escape. The only direction it can move is directly toward her.
>>

That's not too bad. Just move faster than it, or pull it towards something it doesn't want to be near. Like a big spike. Or fire. Lots of fire.

Tirya: It's going for you, but try to grab something to use as a shield, be it a boar, the dead hobgoblin or whatever. Yank the chain to the sides to keep it off balance and get ready to swing it into a wall

Naiel: go for a back attack while it is weighted down. See if you can sever something. Maybe the neck or the spine bit below the ribcage. It seems to have issues with one arm being tied so use your hunting instincts to approach from the weaker side.

Solsa: Still alive?

We don't know what this thing is. That might not be a lethal wound as it survived an arrow through its 'head'. Don't consider it dead until it hasn't moved for quite a while.

Also see what you can do about your face.

The cave doesn't appear to go much farther, there's just a hollow in the wall.

The elves don't appear to be in much of a condition to explain things, so the trio of heroes escort them back to their magical elf mushroom village.

An elf with a distinctive beard addresses the heroes as the remaining elves rush back to their homes and loved ones.

'Thank you for rescuing our people from the vile hobgoblins. Tonight, once everyone has had some time to relax, we can discuss what happened and give you your reward. Until then, our village is open to you. Many of our buildings should be large enough for you to enter, and it would be our honor to provide you with any services you require.'

Solsa wastes no time in rushing to what appears to be the center of the town and regaling the elves that will listen of her own adventures, and the unholy monster she vanquished in the depths of the earth.

Naiel, Tirya, and Boaris are left at the edge of the town, and should decide how to pass the time until night falls.
