There was a boom. Then there was light. Everyone who was outside at the time of the great Boom and Light were blinded and deafened immediately. Millions died. Then came the Blackout. All electricity in our world just vanished. It's as if the laws of energy were changed, as even the solar powered items at my home wouldn't work. We were put back into the stone age, with nothing but the infrastructure, and cities left as hollow shells, doomed to stand forever useless, save for shelter. Society collapsed, and it all went down hill from there.
At-least I assume that's the way it is. After-all, without electricity, how am I supposed to know the whole story? I really only know that the cities Ive been to are crumbling, overgrown husks of their former selves. I also assume that my family is dead, as they never made it home after three months of waiting for my family to return. In those three months, I scavenged around my neighborhood and the town. That was all six years ago when I was a teenager. Now, I moved on from my former stationary lifestyle to a nomadic one, using a Boy Scout book I found as a sort of bible when it came to survival.
My name is Kevin Dozer, I am 21 years of age as of three weeks ago, and I'm nearing the Canadian Border. I think I'm in Indiana. In my pack I have 4 bottles of water, some food to last me 2 days, a miniature calendar, a Swiss Army multi-tool, a compass, and a map. I'm on a highway that should take me straight to the Canadian border in a few days, depending on how fast I travel. It is very fucking cold. I'm not wearing much. Just a leather aviator's jacket I found at a department store, blue jeans, a beanie, goggles (just for looks, although I guess they'll come in handy at some point), military boots I took from an army surplus store, and some hard leather electrician's gloves.
I decide to stop, sit, and scan the area around me. Nothing but abandoned cars and motorcycles. I look to the East, where a forest stretches on for a few miles. Something rising in the sky catches my eye. Can it be... fire!! Someone else!! I haven't seen anybody in months! At-least not since I left Indianapolis. If I go to investigate, I would have to post-pone reaching the Canadian border for however long I'm in this forest (and I really want to get to fucking Canada). I could also be putting myself into danger, as they could be bandits (I haven't seen any yet, but that's not to say there aren't any) and I don't have a weapon save for the knife attachment of my multi-tool that's only about 3 inches long and not that sharp. Oh, great voices in my head, give me guidance!!!

Become suddenly confused as to why the light came after the sound, when light is much, much faster than sound.

What was it like in Indianapolis? Did undamaged generators still work, while they had fuel? What about battery-powered radios? Any idea if the military has set up camps or anything?

I dunno, never really thought of that. Maybe they were two separate instances?Indiana was like any other city Ive been through in the past six years. Save for the fact that there were no people. Come to think of it, I haven't seen many people at all. Definitely not a military presence. As for generators with fuel, no. Its as the properties of wires, and the transfer of energy in electrical appliances have changed. I once tried to get a solar-powered flashlight to work, but to no avail.

While sitting, and listening to the various voices in my head, I hear movement to the North of me. I can guess that it is a few meters ahead. I stand up to get a better look, but see nothing in my immediate vision. I am hesitant to take a look.

After waiting for 3 minutes I decide to just go on and investigate the sound despite the voices' silence. I take out the dull knife from the mult-tool, and hold it up in case anything happens. Not that it would help me. I just need something to make me feel a LITTLE bit safe. I slowly make my way towards the area I heard the noise. Then the sound of a gunshot, the thud of a corpse falling to the road. I drop onto all fours, and crawl under the nearest car. I can hear voices, and they aren't in my head.

"I heard it drop. Good shot Charlie!"
"What did I even kill? A fucking dog?"
"No, no, it has antlers. A baby deer. In other words, you might as well have shot a dog for all the good it will do us!"

It sounds like a father and two boys, maybe brothers? In any case they don't sound malevolent. I take a chance and reveal myself, crawling out from under the car. They immediately spot me.
"Hey! You there!" Says the oldest sounding voice. I put my hands be hind my head and say
"I don't have a gun! I'm just on my way up the highway!"
"Put yer hands down, we ain't bandits!"
I do so, and slowly stand up, hands in the air showing them my only weapon.
I ask: "Are you from the forest? I was going to investigate what I thought looked like smoke until I heard the noise of that animal you shot."
"Smoke you say? Yeah, that's us. We're camped out a mile in, we just came out here hunting. What're you on the highway for anyways?"
"I'm going to Canada."
A sound of confusion went into the man's voice.
"Canada? Why'n the hell would you want to go there?"
"I have my reasons! I'll be on my way now... good day to you!"

Head north and west, the prairies are probably your best bet, major fucking farming communitys and a good majority of which could easily become self sufficent. Also our stuff is built to take the cold even without power...mostly.
Also question if there is anything happing in the north that you should be aware of.

...what are your reasons? And don't do any horrifyingly cliche bullshit oh-so-mysterious act, we're your headvoices. Cold is hard to deal with, you should be heading for somewhere nice and consistently warm, like southern coastline.

And don't waste this opportunity to ask your fellow survivors if they know anything about what happened or the state of the region/country/continent/world at large.

Because I've never been. I dunno, really. I might as well go to places that I've never been now that there's nothing stopping me. I honestly don't know why I didn't decide to go sooner. The last six years have been me taking a tour of Eastern America. I've been all up through New England, just places that I've never been. New York had the most people out and about than the rest of the major cities I've been to. Even though a majority of them were ass-holes. If honk that's just because of the survival crisis that's been going on for the last six years. It really does change people. The movies pretty much represented this perfectly.

I be been walking now for a day, using up one food ration and two bottles of water. I'm doing good managing my resources, one meal and two bottles of water for every 24 hours. I could probably do the same system for 48, but I'm not in that much need to try it. There have been enough sources of food for me to stick wih the system I have going on now. Since walking, I've found enough half-drank bottles of water in cars to fill up my four bottles to capacity. I suppose I should set up camp soon. So, what should I do? Keep walking or set up camp in one of these fine vehicles?
