OLD MAN, DID YOU CALL US? (I CAN'T TELL BUT I ASSUME SO.)

If so this certainly is the pyramid of the foolish ones, because you just made a really foolish decision.

I try to speak, but I seem to lack the lungs or the mouth necessary to do so. Odd...

The man begins to speak again.

"F-Forgive me, may you be cursed demon or blessed deity, I must have made a grievous error; but you must understand my desperation! O strange being, please listen to my tale!!"

I leap down from the top of the pyramid, down to his level.

[THUD.]

He stumbles back and starts shaking violently. Pitiable fellow. I stand up and enter a more human posture, hopefully to make myself less intimidating, and I nod. He seems to get the idea, as he begins telling his story.

"Gracious and curious being, my humble town has been ransacked and taken over by a cruel mistress and her servants! We live under her reign of constant misery and enslavement, and I have finally found a chance to begin the search for the highest Deus Jugis within safe distance, that is, the immortal Foolish Rebellious-Rockers--rumored to dwell within a pyramid 'as cryptic as it is vast'. Ah, but I journeyed only to find mere pretense! Perhaps it is fate, and perhaps it is futile...but if your heart--should you possess one, Gracious Being--may hold any sympathy towards my pitiful plea, I beg you to help in any way you can!"

He really does look pretty desperate. I can see the way he came, back into the forest. It ostensibly leads to a town of some sort.

The pyramid I came out of, as far as I know, has no openings or immediately useful secrets about it. (I wonder for a moment how I managed to escape from it, when I thought I did no more than instinctually stand up at the sound of a pure heart's voice. Next thing I knew, I was on the peak. I have an inkling I have been dormant for quite some time.) It clearly has a purpose, however, even if that purpose was simply to act as an egg for me to hatch from. I have the oddest amnesia; I have no memories except very foggy, strange ones, as if remembering a past life...

The man seems very expectant for an answer from me. It seems he really does see me as his last hope.

I turn to face the pyramid, place my hand on its surface, and bow my head. After a short pause, I face the man once more and give him a single nod. Heh, he shows signs of reverence and awe.
"The...The town is this way, no small walk from the depths of the jungle where we stand. That is, hmrn, if I manage to lose my way again..." I hear him clear his throat. "But, ah! It would truly send the town into jubilations if you could face this merciless sovereign! Though I understand it is quite a bit of responsibility I am throwing into your hands...My heart yet soars at any chance, no matter how minuscule."
We walk for some distance--I'm not sure how long, my sense of time is severely warped, though the sun dove beneath the horizon quite awhile ago--before he speaks up again.
"...Hmn, I suppose I should mention: it is very important you get to her before the sun rises. She is most active at night, while only her minions roam the town during daylight hours. We have tried hiring paladins and prophets to extinguish these minions and even the evil queen herself, but it appears it only serves to diminish the symptom rather than the problem...And when day turns to night, and night turns to day, we often find individuals missing and her minions replenished. It is suspected the missing individuals are...were transfigured into...O, the thought of it--horrible, simply horrible!" The monk seems as if he is about to weep, I'm unsure of how to console him.

A mischievous thought crosses my mind--to elicit further respect and strike terror into this unfortunate individual by violently and suddenly seizing him--but I consider how anybody startled by something mysterious in the middle of the deep, dark sea of flora would likely suffer an instant death from shock, this old fellow especially. I instead opt to give him a few gentle reassuring pats on the back. Initially, he flinches a bit from the unexpected contact, but he soon appears to get the message, for he smiles his thanks.

As we continue walking, I spy a loose stick on the ground. Certain this will aid communication along the line, I pick it up and carry it with me.

At last, we come to a break in the trees and other plants, and a village with numerous houses and an enormous castle reveals itself to me.

"Ahh...I have found my way back home, thank Teyest'Oh. Whatever preparations or resources you may need I will attempt to acquire for you, but as our town is quite poor and decreasingly populous, I cannot promise I will be able to provide what you seek..."

From far away, the houses amusingly take the guise of skulls. It is probably just the window arrangement as viewed from a distance, however.

Before we get too close to the town, I stop the man with a firm grab of his shoulder. I use the stick I picked up to write out in the dirt my need for arms, but oddly, he only gives me a confused look. I erase it and draw a sword, then make several emphatic gestures with it to further express my need for some kind of a tool for attacking.

"...You require weaponry, is that correct?" I nod. "Hmmn...most have already sold whatever major weaponry they may have had in exchange for food and blankets, but surely there are still those who have kept theirs, valuing emergency defense over all else."

The man continues to lead the way into town. I wonder if I should ask or mention anything else before we get there...
