"Tiny grains of golden heat
whisper softly 'neath my feet.
So long I pass through waves of sand
searching for my promised land.
Forever will I travel on
even if the world is gone.
Through hunger strong and muscles weak
Until I find the place I seek."

"What? Why would I do that?

And for that matter who said that?"

Could I have reached the town already?

Yes. It's just invisible.
You might want to dodge the guy with the invisible knife right behind you.

I don't see a town. What town are you heading for?
>>
No. 361464 ID: 742815

Do you have a spyglass or other some such viewing equipment? It looks like there might be a haboob coming, so you had best find shelter.

If you have one, check the shit out of your surroundings.

Of course you don't see a town, it's invisible.

"Look, I've had enough of this childish game. If you're thieves, good luck. I have nothing. Why would I carry valuables so far off any form of road? I have no gold, no jewelery, no spyglass. Why would I need a spyglass? All I'd see is sand, and that's depressing."

If these are the townspeople, I'm just going to keep walking to the next town.

"Seriously, whoever you are, show yourselves."

We might show ourselves if you stick your dick in the sand. The whole sticking your dick in the sand is for your own enjoyment, so it's a pretty good deal for you.

Well I guess the secret's out. Congratulation, individual entity, you have managed to become the focus for The Voices through either your actions or the whims of fate, and are cursed for the foreseeable future to be the one who can hear us and whom we dwell in the head of. That means we can hear your thoughts and see your surroundings. We're just as clueless as to 'why' as you, but it's something we've both got to deal with so let's try to make nice.

"V-voices? In my head? I-I suppose it's plausible. I'm hot, tired, and have been wandering through a desert looking for a town of whose location I only have a vague idea. Deserts aren't exactly renowned for retaining sanity. Well then, head voices, what should I refer to you as?"

On second thought, if I really am mad, you voices should be able to hear my thoughts, right?

>>361476 Stop that. There will be no sand dickings
>>
No. 361500 ID: cfa804

Yes we can, though it would've been better if you had asked for proof o four mind reading powers through a different method, like thinking 'potato.' However, to further confirm, you were previously thinking that we might be the townspeople. Anyway, just think of us as voices. We're all individuals, but we're also all equally powerful or powerless, depending on how you want to look at it. So you're looking for a town, in a desert, with no visible supplies. How insane and/or fucked are you, birdie?
>>
No. 361502 ID: 1854db

Call us the sand-whispers. And yes, we can hear what you're thinking. Are you sure you aren't walking in circles?
>>
No. 361508 ID: 0d7a83

Well crazy or not I believe introductions are in order. We are the disembodied voices in your head,
known as the Infinite Psyche, the Collective, Many-Voices, Annoyingbabblingatthebackofmyskull, or sometimes just Jeff.
What's your name?

361509

Hey, watch it. I'm no bird, I'm a male human. Well, mostly human. Long story.

Anyway, sandwhispers, no, I'm not lost. Well, kind of. My supplies ran out a couple days ago, but I'm still okay. I do have this map, though. I'm somewhere in the red circle, and I have it on good authority that i can get what I need in a town somewhere around the red x.
>>
No. 361514 ID: cfa804

We can see you. Don't try to lie to us. You're clearly not human. As for how fucked you are... that depends on the scale of the map. Still, you ought get to high ground to see if you can spot evidence of civilization. Or, you know, die terribly of exposure.
>>
No. 361517 ID: c7b6c2

That's quite the terrible map. Who gave you that? Because they wanted you to die out alone in the desert.

Anyway, we know the way. Just do like >>361514 said and get to high ground, and we can get you to safety.
>>
No. 361518 ID: 1854db

>>361509
Mostly human? Well, we can talk about that later. Priority one is figuring out what direction uh... ANYTHING is, really. Priority two would be figuring out what direction leads you to shelter and supplies.
>>
No. 361607 ID: 78b9fc

High ground, look for landmarks. Search in an outward spiral only if you have absolutely no way of telling which direction the town is.
>>
No. 361613 ID: 8ed09e

Are those river inlets at the coast? And is that tundra at the top?
Unless there's cliffs around those a river might lead into the desert.

Anyway, find a high area, if you're that close you should be able to find any routes or signs of habitation in the area.

And we are going to get you to talk about yourself, the squamousness of your limbs indicates you have an amusing story to tell us.
Who knows, we might take an interest in helping you adapt to your new form!

361726

Right, right. High place it is. And don't make fun of my map! It was just the blank map when I got it, and I drew the symbols. It was intentionally vague seeing as the place I'm seeking isn't exactly... "state sanctioned" shall we say?

I'm beginning to suspect some of you sand whispers are quite rude. There's no need for vulgarity, especially when you don't know basic astronomy. According to BOTH suns, however, it's about noon.

Geography-wise, yes those would be the South Coast and the Tundra. I'm beginning to suspect you head voices. Shouldn't you know all of this if you're in my head?

I do suppose introductions are in order, though. My name is So-Solomon um, Atreu. Yes, that'll do. As for my backstory, I-Oh!

No. 361759 ID: cfa804

Reading your surface-level thoughts isn't the same thing as being able to access your memories. It is, however, easy enough to tell that you're lying to us about your name. Not that I'm blaming you, but you'll need to be slicker than that in the future. And we're not really anything special, just limited observers in your head... We're not especially wise or powerful, we just come in handy when you need a second opinion on something or some alternate insight on an issue.

Alright, I'm going. I don't get why you'd have to ask me something you know, but oh well. And I don't know anyone named Artax.

...Ah, I guess it wasn't a very good lie considering you can read my thoughts... I promise I'll explain, but after I've finished my business here.

Believe me, stripping, while pointless, would actually make me more of a target for bandits. Again, I'll explain why later. Sorry.

-------------------------------------------

Ah, here we are. This was set in the side of the dune near the source of the smoke. It appears to be a tarp set into the sand covering a slab of sandblasted stone. Presumably a very rough substitute for a door.

"Jamaal, it's me! Open up!"

"What's the password?"

"Come on, seriously? You know it's me!"

"Password!"

sigh "Peter piper picked a peck of-get me out of the country!"

"Right away, Mr. Antsy Pants! Your chariot awaits!"

This is Jamaal Derie. I've known him since- well, since I was a child. He disappeared when I was young and I never knew why. Turns out he runs a refugee smuggling operation now. And he's is going to help me with my goal: get out of this country."

That in the back is a Guuzu. We'll be using that to get out quickly and quietly. Or so he claims

I don't see a saddle. Are you riding that?

Also let me guess- there's some racial purging going on and you're a member of one of those being purged.

You needn't bother to explain yourself to us if you don't want to, but we can only help you with things we know about. If you give us bad information and ask us to give you advice, our advice is going to be flawed.

He's obviously human don't be racist. And the method we use the Guuzu is also obvious. Attempt to swallow the Guuzu.

Wow, you sand whispers really are out of the loop. Jamaal is a Shalaa, of the sand tribe to be precise.

"I've got the skiff in another alcove nearby. I'll only be a second."

"Alright."

"And hey, it's really good to see you, man. I'll get you out safe, no problem. Have you decided on a new identity yet?"

"I was going with, uh, Solomon Atreu."

"That's good enough, i guess. Don't worry, once we're out of here people won't ask too many questions. You won't even need that cloak so much."

"Thank you. I have the utmost faith in you, Jamaal."

Thank you for being understanding about this whole identity thing. I promise it won't be long before I'm safe and I can explain everything. Meanwhile, what should I do while I wait for him to get back?
>>
No. 362508 ID: cfa804

How about you go check out where he went and make sure he's not betraying you? This is the part of the story where he tends to do so.

I trust Jamaal, he wouldn't be betraying me to anyone. If you knew my enemies, you'd know they don't hide well enough to be anywhere near here.

I do, in fact, have a canteen I'll take a sip of while I wait. Hydration is important, you know!

"Y'all right?"

"Yes, I'm fine, thank you."

"Let's get going then!"

Now we begin the trek to the border. I have to lay low in the cart, but it should only be a couple of hours. Jamaal is riding alongside the guuzu and the skiff.
