[Bracket Text]- My observations, comments

"All greatness stems from a single action, a single decision, a single will. Whether this will be pure or corrupt...that is a different matter entirely. There are those that would absorb your will, make you one of them. I cannot force you to choose what i would is right, you must make them yourselves."

This speech was given to me by my mentor a little over three summers ago, now he lies dead in a mass grave. Partially because of me, but mostly because of my father. I was able to escape persecution by the law and make my way into the wilderness, my father was not so lucky. I have no plans on ever returning to my homeland, but the future is indeed fraught with mystery.

I was able to use my meager survival skills to make my way towards the nearest cave system, hoping to find shelter and get a rough lay of the land. But my training had no instruction on spelunking and i quickly found myself starving to death as i struggled to retrace my steps. I'm not sure how much longer i lasted, but i remember glimpsing sunlight, and then...nothing. But if i'm talking now, i must still be alive....right?

>YOUR NAME?

Who said that?!

>WHAT IS YOUR NAME

Well i guess my name is...

(Name will be chosen at random from the first three replies)

I blinked my eyes a few times and was better able to see who was asking the question

"Tanya Pavlichenko"

>Yes...yess...

I notice that he seems to floating in midair, he crosses his legs as he scans a a long piece of parchment that just hangs in front of him

>Says here you starved to death just feet from freedom...tragic.

I'm sure theres been some sort of mistake...i can't be dead!

>You would be suprised how many times i've heard that excuse...now if you would please remain calm someone will be sent for you shortly.

With that he just...floats away.

Well it appears that i've died...now what?

Imagine the worst bureaucracy you've ever had to deal with then imagine a bureacracy a thousand times worse than that. That bureaucracy would be easier to work with than the people who now approach you.

Trying to find someone who seems like they know what is going on I turn around to see a woman working at a desk, it seems that there are some symbols on the desk, but i don't understand what they mean. I see some sort of portrait of a man looking into the distance, and a sign posted on the wall, it looks like someone tried to post it multiple times due to the residue around it, there are also symbols on the sign that i do not understand.

This is odd, because although i wouldn't have been described as anything close to a scholar, i did learn to read some basic things.

"Excuse me, where am i?" I ask the woman

>Please wait for your appointed guide

i frown at this, it seems that everyone in the afterlife is an asshole.

Look for a handbook, buckle down and read the thing. Even if it reminds you of stereo instructions.

I turn to see who poked me and a man similar to the first hangs in mid-air in front of me

>I am your appointed guide.

Well that explains alot, "Am i dead?" I ask the man

>Unfortunatley, you are.

Not satisfied I ask another question "Why can't i read any of this?"

>This text is not meant to be understood by the likes of yourself.

"What do you mean? You aren't making any sense at all"

>What i mean is, those recently dead are not expected to understand the text of the advisors, furthermore my duty is not to answer petty questions, it is to introduce you to your spiritual adivsors

I nodded as he continued

>They are all souls that have once been in your posistion, and they have all expierenced what you are about to. You may choose to ignore them, but given your past actions i beilive that would prove unwise.

I frowned while pondering this

>They already have been influencing you, Tanya is not your true name...is it?

My frown deepened at this. I don't remeber ever being called anything different, but somehow his words called up a hazy memory

>It matters not, your true name is a moot point, Tanya is more than suitable for our purposes. Now, if you will please follow me.

With that he turns and floats down a corridor i hadn't noticed before

Without so much as turning to see if I had followed he continues down the hallway

>Now, it has been awhile since someone has come to us in the same state you are now

“What do you mean?”

>Well since you have performed what some would describe as ‘good deeds’ in your life, you have built up enough karma to cancel out your part in the slaughter

“You’re telling me that by helping some old lady across the road, I was forgiven for almost killing my mentor?”

>Well now when you put it that way it does sound rather foolish, but think of it as if you had not helped that woman, she would have been mugged and accidentally stabbed when she tripped over a stone trying to give the men her money. Your presence dissuaded them and they went on to try and mug the sheriff, who put up more a fight and later jailed the lot of them.

I think back and vaguely remember a bunch of vagrants idling around during this particular event

>Coupled with what else you have done, your karma is effectively neutral

“There you go mentioning karma again, I thought it was just some imaginary force to try and get you to do nice things.”

>Even imaginary forces can have impact on a person’s life Ms. Pavlichenko. But once again I am answering your petty questions. Ah here we are.
He stops in front of a large door with a single symbol on it

>Now there is something you must know before you enter. Every action has a consequence, but for simplicities sake we will tally your actions in the form of ‘Karma Points’. Each kind or compassionate action will reward karma, while hateful violent actions will reflect negatively upon your record.

“How am I supposed to know what you deem hateful, or kind?” I ask meekly

>You will simply have to trust your advisors to assist you as best they can. In the mean time, it’s far past my break, so get along now.

Deciding to multi-task i opened the door and bid him farewell at the same time

He simply floated there, his arms crossed behind his back

Turning to the open door way i could see what looked like sunlight a little ways off, in between me and it stood an area of what looked like stone floors and dark environment.

From where i was standing i could see what looked like a human figure laying on the rocks, feet from the sunlight.

Well. Now that i know i'm not in this alone. I might as well ask for your help. How should i proceed?
