Yes.
I believe now is as good as ever.
Still, it’s a great risk of wasted money if things don’t pan out properly—but the window of opportunity could only be open for so long…

Vikin! Do you have their profiles ready? And you’re sure these are perfect candidates for… the mission?

Vikin: Yes, boss. All of them from STATION HURON. They meet the criteria just as you requested!

Vikin: I had to jump through a few hoops but you know how these mercs feel about outsiders.

Boss: Yes, yes. I’d hate to rush you but—

Vikin: Apologies. I’ll get right to the important stuff then.

Vikin: These nine mercenaries have been interviewed and are capable of working in a group. They understand cooperation; so there are no ‘lone wolves’.

Vikin: No rookies, which is common sense. They have some renown in HURON where the titular space station is grounds for parley and sanctuary. Outside the station, it’s practically PVP. So none of them have a grudge or vendetta against one another due to a previous contract or scuffle. They’re honorable, to say the least.

Vikin: This is a heist to get in and get out. Likely the party won’t be separated, and where they’re going could end badly if they split. But you never know. So there will neither be a getaway driver waiting in a car, nor a seductress to break away to distract some VIP, etc.

Vikin: I’ve divided the selection pool into three groups: Bounty Hunters work to study their environment and attack accordingly; Grunts for extra power to clear the room and boost defenses; and Oddjobs with sophisticated talents to make work easier for the rest of us. And as far as where your money goes you’ll get to choose one from each group!

Boss: Very good, Vikin.

Boss: So be it.

Vikin: I’ll get right to the BOUNTY HUNTERS. Usually they’re clad in light armor, but quite efficient in close quarters and medium range.

A) The Assassin. So we have our first mercenary, a Sajjan assassin. She’s broken lower-tier records on HURON at a young age. She’s acrobatic, quick, an expert in close combat, and is always equipped with a weapon. Sajjans have a stinger that could discharge potent venom—and whiskers that are sensitive to touch and movement. Some claim she could cut a gnat from sensing the very wave of its wings.

B) The Wastelander. Natural born Relicynth shaped by the scorching dunes and sandstorms in Paligrij. He often chooses a more… barbarous method—but he’s not a crazy zealot. His kind has extra-long arms with the sharpest, longest talons I’ve ever seen. They could climb up any obstacle in a sprint. A Relicynth has to use prosthetic hands to hold most guns—but when he charges on fours he can chase any bounty down.

C) The Manipulator. This Eigo isn’t a psychic, but she wields technology utilizing stasis and slight telekinesis. She kept these tools after her satellite-scrapper industry was bought out, and she retreated to HURON for new business. Effective in situations to control an opponent’s position. She can slow down runners, force push attackers, or quietly lift small macguffins out of pockets.

Boss: I believe I’ll hire The Manipulator. Controlling the battlefield is important in case they run into a fight they can't run from.

Vikin: Yes, sir. I’ll send the invite as soon as possible!

Vikin: Next, your choice of GRUNTS. Their defenses are promising. Normally they’d be hired sycophants or work to guard shipments for a safe, interstellar passage.

A) The Cleaner. This Imortan is—ahem—a liquidator. He’s usually hired when two underground families are in cahoots with one another. He can clear a room full of bodies or… clear the room full of bodies. No crime if there’s nothing to show, huh? Still, his contractors are happy and he seems to play along just fine. He’s equipped with a water saw and a tank full of acid that bores through the toughest steel.

B) The Bouncer. The Cnidarian managed to find a prototype EXO/suit and set out to HURON to work as a bodyguard, bouncer, and even repo man. Though he has some anger issues, that only fuels her strength to overrun mobs, beat down brutes, and smash through doors. This mercenary could take a real beating without breaking a sweat.

C) The DemoNaut. The Xingast was an astronaut demolitions expert mining the asteroids of Cor’Till. Unfortunately laser-drilling put many workers like her out of a job. She secretly kept a suit that can withstand lightning-fast projectiles zipping around in space. In her Zen, she can remain calm under heavy fire to configure a makeshift explosive.

This is a toughy.

For straight up tankiness, it's either the bouncer or the demoNaut. But I like the designs of both the cleaner and the bouncer. So it seems like the bouncer is fitting both criteria, but that's understating how much I like the cleaner's design. Hmmm...

My vote is going to be A.) The Cleaner.

However, I won't kick and scream if the bouncer gets chosen instead.

Boss: If he’s as careful as you claim him to be, then I’ve decided to go with The Cleaner.

Vikin: I’ll mark ‘em down, Boss!

Vikin: Finally your support, the ODDJOBS. These people are willing to make an honest buck bringing their talents to the job.

A) The Dimensioner. I managed to enlist this fabled mercenary. This Huntoon can teleport short distances using 4th dimensional travel. His arms can reach into some pocket to grab the right guns for any situation, where his butler maintains an arsenal from the other side. He’ll need to know where he’s going, of course, and traveling extreme distances take up energy.

B) The Engineer. A smart Gard with a knack of drilling into anything worth stealing from. This unlucky miner lost his legs during a tunnel collapse, but he has a knack for any piece of tech he can get his hands on—including repairs and construction vehicles. Some of his drillwork is old-school—for he is also equipped with enough sonic tools to crack a freighter in half with the right vibrations.

C) The Constructor. Lastly, this Chupian managed to steal some tight Gortian stuff and escape their clutches and detention centers. She harnesses a tool to fabricate and mold hardlight structures into just about anything. Shields. Platforms. Cages. She probably has the schematics for anything practical in the heat of the moment.

One by one each mercenary enters the office of this shady client. But that’s how it is with anyone offering a job. You’ve met Vikin during the interviews—the job sounds promising even when extremely vague. A heist, an exfiltration, they’re all the same.

She patiently stands by the door, silent with her clipboard. You could look at the scenery outside. A city being born. Vikin informs that you can have a drink by the minibar.

You may have heard of one another at some point, perhaps as strangers walking by on Station HURON. It’s one of the largest unofficial freight-colonies independent from the Gortian Empire.

None of you spoke yet. You could wait until the boss arrives, or break the ice…

Mercenaries that interact well will be able to bond throughout the mission, and plans may fall into your favor. You can designate which character makes the action—otherwise any suggestion without specifying a character will result in a mercenary most likely to act it out.

Sertis, show your team (& the chat players) that you’re TOTALLY not as nasty & evil as your career choice description & nightmare face makes you out to be, Start by cleaning that dusty stove & putting on a quick round of drinks for your friend for-No you cannot use the tea kettle for an acid pressure cooker!

Veisar, you seem to be the most anxious & out of their depth person, you’re got the fucking liquidator himself not five steps away in your half of the room & two digital witchcrafters who don’t look to be in the mood for anyone’s shit shit right now. Maybe you got yourself in to deep this time. That secretary bug seems to be of the same mind. Maybe it’s not to late to try negotiating with her to find yourself into a job that’s more your speed.

Driga, you seem stressed out over this, well maybe stressed about life in general, times must have been tough after your company went under, maybe you should try sitting down & having some tea to calm down & meet the tea...What the heck is that Chupian street rat doing with tech of that caliber? This warrants investigation.

Njar, The liquidator seems to think he’s above you what with him completely ignoring you & that Lizard guy went strait for the bug girl? Was it because you are so flat? What a sad state of things to be outdone by a skittering bug who doesn’t even have a rack in the first place & now that Eigo is giving you a creepy goat stare. Yeeesh she’s got a pretty big pair herself & shit is she a psychic? Maybe she’s trying to rub it in. Put your poker face on. As for reeling in the boys from their bugs & drink making well thats nothing a bit of well placed energy construct in the shape of a barbell can’t fix. Old times ones with the round ends to em.

Sertis is the only nonchalant person in the room. He plunks a few cubes in his drink with an occasional glance until the last mercenary walks in. “Well, well, could this be everyone?” he speaks with a low and quite alluring mannerism, letting all eyes shift to him. “Why so anxious? Take a drink! Who wants a stiff one to start~?” He has the fine ichor of Pearlwater in a rocks glass.

Driga remains looking through her reflection. “I’ll pass.” she replies in monotone.

Uh, no thank you. I’m sort of a teetotaler.” the Gard answers, seemingly chipper with a nasally hiss.

Ooooh…” Sertis responds almost disappointedly. “So, Skinnylegs. Who are you dressed to be?

Veisar hesitates when he scans Sertis’ getup, “An engineer. I’m pretty handy with a wrench. Do you know anything about the mission? This is probably a standard job to drill through a vault door. Are you some kind of bodyguard?

Sertis sips his drink, “I’m the janitor.

I can’t tell if you’re joking.

With a chuckle the Imortan takes another sip, “Heh-heh. In Huron especially, you can make a living cleaning someone else’s mess—as long as you’re fast. Most of the jobs are quite accidental to begin with! Itchy trigger fingers.

Well, accidents happen I suppose.

I’ll share a little secret with you. Everything can be tidied up with a XAZ-017 Watersaw and a special dissolution to cut through anything like Gorm oleomargarine.

As the boys talk Driga approaches Njar as fuzzy images fail to lock in place in the Chupian's hands. Her arms link behind her back and heels click together. “You don’t know how to use that thing, do you?” she probes. There’s dissonance between a genuine question and an insult.

Not exactly user-friendly.” the Chupian sharply answers with sparks of rose crackling around her fingers. “What business is it of yours how I handle my stuff?

Driga raises a brow, “It would be best if the only known portable hardlight device in the galaxy can stop nothing short of a bullet. I’ve only heard of select few prototypes reaching close to 47%. Enough to stop an angrily thrown ping-pong ball.

Njar kicks her feet up on the boss’ desk and eases in her makeshift chair. “Trust me. This stuff is miles beyond your normal tech. It’s certainly not a pair of magician’s bracelets. You think I can’t stop a shot from a pew-shooter? I can flicker a shield out of thin air before any of yous tap the trigger.

Your wager is intriguing.

With an abrupt warning the assistant speaks up, “I would advise all of you not to use any firearms in the office!

Sertis scoffs with an amused smile, “Oh please, Vikin. Allow them to demonstrate your money’s worth with a healthy sparring~ We won’t be using bullets afterall.

Veisar is reluctant to speak at first, yet he attempts to mediate. “Now, now. Can't we just… introduce ourselves? Maybe? Or are we using codenames on this one?

Stone-faced. The Manipulator is calm listening to the riff-raff. Njar darts her eyes over with a sneer. “I guess I ought to cut you some slack, Eigo. I get we all have to grab what we can when... changing jobs.

Driga and Njar stand off across the room. A visor pixelates from thin air and floats comfortably along the Constructor’s snout. She glares with confidence, cocksure of her quickdrawing skills while fingers crack. The Eigo returns a cold stare. Calculating. She knows she must initiate the game. Shooting the chest or crotch could be too predictable—yet aiming at the limbs would be trickier.

Sertis prowls close to Vikin. She looks uncomfortable as far as an Arthocob’s body language would express. “So you seem to have our numbers,” he speaks, “I hope we could still keep in touch—you know—during the mission in case things go awry~

Frantically the Arthocob taps her digits on the intercom, “Uh,s- sir? I’d hate to bother you but your, uh, ‘guests’ are starting to get restless! Please come to the office as soon as you can!

You can assume that whatever you're thinking, Njar would be anticipating.

I'd assume that Hardlight takes a bit longer to use than Kinesis, so Njar would have to start using it a bit earlier than you to be able to stop you. Njar knows this so I think she would go for an attack to disrupt yours, rather than defense. Also, not a head-on attack since that would be disrupted by your own attack - I think Njar would be using an indirect attack...

Driga should fire her weapon at the mirror. And then send a second shot at Njar.

The room falls silent. You can hear your own blood pounding in the ears. Veisar halts with bated breath as Driga takes her time scanning each target on The Constructor. The best choice would be right between the legs. It would take longer to raise the arm to fire above the waist. These punks need to curb their overconfident, cushy persona—and Driga refuses to stoop and play dirty.

Best to aim fair and square. As soon as the Chupian makes an erred twitch--

--Driga fires--

Maybe the Constructor’s looks were deceiving. Her technical prowess hides behind her game-face. A whip of her arm and digits swipe; she constructs a shield over her groin. It slants to cast the disintegration laser at a right angle, sending a volley of particles into the Gard’s own lap and his prosthetics shake from sudden surprise. A sizzle burns to his undergarments before extinguishing.

The group selects their seats. Their client activates a projector and the lights gradually dim. A slideshow of grainy pictures flash above. A gas giant blots the entire frame.

This. Is the gas giant Parada Gaea. Circling is a Jupiter Harvester nicknamed the J.H. CZARI. For those unfamiliar, these cruisers are made for their namesake: harvesting gas giants for very potent elements and building blocks. You thought oil rigs were dangerous? With the flick of the slide there’s a closer image of the Czari. Like a typical cryptozoo photo it’s blurred and hard to figure out its shape. The mercenaries may have basic civilian-level knowledge on how these giant vessels work.

Czari is not an… ‘official’ Harvester but an illegal operation overseen by rebellious Tripods. It’s highly likely that no one knows about their dig site but us.

Parada Gaea is a little off-the-grid, so it’s an effective spot to hide from the ‘space police’. The Gortians do not have a good history with them. Well, nobody has in the past few centuries when they once held the galaxy hostage.

I guess you can thank the Gortians for putting an end to that.

Word has reached my desk that they’ve struck gold. And they have an abundance of some concentrated exotic matter. They dub it: ‘Project Amorphous’. Their scientists have no clue what makes it tic—but it has potential to be an unlimited source of power. Something no one can ever get enough of these days. As such when it’s not undergoing experiments it’s locked in quarantine.

What exactly are the objectives for this mission, from minimum success to most preferred? Steal some of the exotic matter? All of it? Steal the research data on the exotic matter as well? Destroy the ship after making off with the goods? Capture the ship and "liquidate" the crew so Z'anon can drop his own team in to take over Project Amorphous?

How much does he care about how much evidence we leave behind that the place was hit? He want nobody left alive to tell the tale and all records destroyed? Send the ship crashing into Parada Gaea and make it look like a failed extraction run? Or can we be as loud as we want and leave a huge mess as long as it isn't connected back to him?

There any special handling or hazard info on this concentrated exotic matter he knows that we ought to know? Any known radiation, electrical, gravitational, or chemical hazards? Is it exceptionally dense, meaning we'll need a anti-G hauling rig? How about impact sensitivity? We gonna have to handle it as gentle as nitroglycerin?

How about risks and dangers on the J.H. Czari, from either the crew, the ship and it's systems and materials on the ship? He got the crew composition and count? How well armed are they and how many actually know how to handle themselves in a fight? There any automated internal defense systems? How much internal surveillance is there and how well monitored is it? What about external sensors and weapons systems? And any particularly hazardous materials on the ship we should watch out for? Figure there's some real exciting industrial chemicals used for gas giant mining that would not take kindly to a stray shot. How much are we gonna have to check our fire on board beyond just being on a spaceship?

Now, how are we even going to get on this ship? Z'anon said it's a illicit operation, and it's in a out of the way system, so that means the only ships they're expecting are those they already know. Anyone else dropping into the system is gonna raise alarms. So, unless Z'anon has got a cloaked ship with a quiet hull-cutter boarding system up his sleeve, we're probably gonna be hiding in a ship that's already expected.

Who's the mole on the ship? It's possible the Tripods either took him captive to wring his employer out of him, or they know someone transmitted the info but they don't know it was him and he's laying low or hiding. Either way, he could provide more info on the situation if we make contact. We're gonna need a way to ID ourselves as having the same employer, though.

And what are the odds that the ship's crew know that info about what they've got aboard has been transmitted and they figure somebody is gonna be coming for 'em sooner rather than later so they took action? Can they call in additional defenses? More guards for the ship? Put in other security measures? Or sold the whole lot on to another party and took off or threw in with a stronger group for protection?

What are the chances that another organization has got its eyes on this group of rebellious Tripods and knows about Project Amorphous its value? The Gortians? Figure they'd be keeping extra eyes out for Tripod trouble. Anyone else in the region that might know and have the means to make a move on the ship after we're aboard to stop us? Does anyone, government or otherwise, have a territorial claim on Parada Gaea and may step in?

Driga is first to ask, “This ‘Amorphous’… Is it something we’ll only need a sample of? It’s not alive, is it?

Nothing alive can come from a Jupiter with six-hundred million times more pressure than the rock we stand on," replies the client, "Take the whole thing or a sample of this potent element. My contact was never able to visit the labs without authorization. I’m sure you’ll figure out a way to contain it.

Veisar stirs in his chair, “Any more details on this contact of yours? Should we make this a rescue mission--

Not of your concern. I’m paying you to retrieve Amorphous. What information I give is all you need to know.

The Constructor hunches forward in her seat, “Well how would you like this done, bossguy? Stealthily? No witnesses?

A little history lesson for those under a rock: The Tripods used to be the largest military power in the galaxy, now reduced to a sad heap of refugees and resistance fighters. Their weapons of war have been confiscated and melted. They scrounge and use outdated technology that was hidden from the Gortians; cheap equipment compared to today’s standards.

It’s not surprising to see other aliens on board. Maybe hostages. Maybe freedom fighters. Bandits. Pirates. But Tripods alone are cunning and strict.

For a cruiser like this? It’s not built for fighting. CZARI was hijacked with a few of their motifs stapled on. To remain hidden they use Parada Gaea’s presence to block signals. But you’ll use the Jupiter’s advantage to approach undetected. You’ll receive floor plans on the shuttle tomorrow. Take the journey planning your approach.

Sertis shrugs in his chair, “Any fancy toys~? Eh—specialized equipment, of course.

The meeting has concluded. All mercenaries leave without another word. The night continues with our party fine-tuning their tools, thinking what they could accomplish with those credits. The shuttle leaves early. But getting to the spaceport is a chore.

Such obelisks could never touch the surface of a planet—what with being the size of a small city. Other cities are lucky to have space elevators. Yet that’s not the case here.

Coordinates were preset. Everyone enters a snug vessel before launch. Buckled in, the shuttle rubber-bands forward, breaching into a sheet of space like a bullet cleaving paper.

The mercenaries don’t offer much chit-chat for several days. The shuttle itself is one giant room (with two in the back for privacy’s sake). Driga spends most of her time studying, as a bounty hunter would, with the luxury of planning accordingly.

Veisar occupies the pilot seat once the shuttle closes in on Parada’s vicinity.

Entering the ‘forbidden zone’,” the Gard quips, “We’re no longer in the sights of the Gortian’s Looking Glass. I’m decreasing beta movement now.

Parada Gaea is within range. I’ve activated a jammer for good measure. It’s hard to find exactly where the CZARI orbits unless we get closer. The Jupiter funks up the other signals, as expected.

"But I believe we're on the right course. I'll let you know when CZARI is within sight."

Driga flicks her eyes at the panel, “Then listen up everyone, I’ve been studying the CZARI’s floor plans and here’s what I’ve found…

There are two entrances to sneak onto the ship. Thanks to our shuttle’s size and radio camouflage we can reach the Hangar Bay and hide in an alcove for docking. From there we could go through the Cargo Hold. We shouldn't waltz out into the open--but the mass of cargo they store could be a bit of a maze to traverse in.

Or—our other option is to sneak through the Waste Disposal Unit and cut through Maintenance. It's linear, but cramped. And we may run into some workers.

Either way, we’ll still be on the path to reach the Greenhouse where anything through that tube is stored. But we need to learn the true location of Amorphous. It seems like these Cruisers are a collage of puzzle pieces. Between operations a Harvester’s sections can be switched around, or removed and added. If there is an R&D we’ll need to know where.

Where should our mercenaries land?

So it’s settled then. The best route is to sneak through the Hangar Bay. Plenty of opportunities for cover and less chance to run into any Tripods.” Driga dismisses the projector and turns her head towards the pilot. “Veisar, what’s our position to the CZARI?

Located! Already synchronizing orbit!” states the Gard as the azure field fades into a splitting portrait of black ichor and Parada Gaea’s red sea.

The CZARI.

The shuttle drifts to find an angle to the docking atrium. The monument itself looks like a ghost station—a mechanical marvel in stasis. Jupiter Harvesters would have barges soaring left and right while it leeched off a planet’s resources.

Not one ship to be seen now.

Its carapace has been patched with salvaged material. It’s an enigma how Tripods were able to hijack this immense space station and evade the Empire’s watchful eye. The straw of the Harvester is deployed and continues infinitely into the giant like an astral tether.

Veisar announces, “Rerouting. We’re invisible but only for a brief time.

Fasten yourselves! There are several boxcars I can use as cover!

The shuttle swiftly coasts inside. You could only hold your breath and pray you weren’t seen before reaching the transport containers. Gravity detected—the inside of the shuttle matches the orientation of CZARI’s false pull.

It’s a massive garage—yet unusually barren of crew at the moment. Ships of peculiar design scatter across the metallic lot. Tripodic, assumingly. Old models. All of them as orderly as a strike team readies for deployment for a war long gone. But scavenger ships of the modern age weren’t excluded either. Sparse glimpses of workers maintain and refuel their crafts. There are railings on the ceiling for moving boxcars. But the freights remain still and seemingly out of operation.

Together Veisar and Driga steer in a convenient alcove, enough to hide amongst the ship containers. The mercenaries land, the shuttle powers down, and the jammer is lifted appropriately.

Well…” begins Sertis, rolling his shoulders so his backpack wouldn’t sag.

Veisar immediately checks out any tools scattered in this corner. There is basic equipment like a wrench or some bolts. He identifies a fuel pump and a (XL) battery with a very low charge; their tubes and wires can reach your parked shuttle. The battery has been collecting dust.

There is an inactive tram leading into the labyrinth—a boxcar hovers over their heads. Reachable if you climbed on the tallest pile of crates. “I wonder why they’re not moving. But I guess if they aren’t shipping out cargo there’s no need. There ought to be a control booth somewhere…

You finally gaze upon some wretched little beings. They are, on average, four-and-a-half feet tall—give or take some inches. A strange combination of limbs, too; their lengthy arms reach the ground with their titular modified tail providing a third leg. Their feet are as prehensile as hands and attached to legs much shorter and thinner below their torso.

One time or another, our mercenaries have caught a glimpse of a rare creature crawling around HURON. Still, observing them channels an uncanny ambiance like encountering an unknown beast in the wild. Is it friendly? Are they predatory? Do they like being pet?

No one in your party understands their language. Two workers are squabbling—nothing heated it seems. The one in the forklift gestures at the railing above as the other opens a floor panel with a toolbox and a welding-type nozzle.

Behind them the giant door to the Cargo Hold is halfway closed. With some effort you could try and climb up and over together.

“Not quite—” corrects the Manipulator, “I can push them around with great force but I can’t suspend them in air. They’d be too heavy unless we’re in zero-G.”

“Then you can freeze them in stasis—”

“I’ll need to get in pretty close for that. Can’t risk chasing the forklift away—”

“Don’t you do anything convenient?”

“Being a bounty hunter is a patient job, Njar. I’ve captured all kinds of game and you should only strike when necessary. Besides, couldn’t you make a large cage and trap them both?”

“Nooo. It wouldn’t hold the forklift still for long anyway.”

“I see…”

>freight controls
Veisar scans up and around, but it’s a short hunt until he spots the control hub. “Up there,” he hisses, “by the cargo doors. It’s a vantage point. It’s probably the booth to operate the freight cars in this section.”

“Can you see anyone in there?” Driga asks.

Slowly, and after a grueling set of stairs later, the Manipulator and Engineer inch inside the booth. It’s a long corridor with desks made of solid plastic and particleboard. The Manipulator eyes the Engineer. She presses a finger to her lips before signaling her intention to knock the lone tripod. The butt of her disintegration pistol mockingly hits the air by the palm of her hand. “We have it under control.” she relays under her breath into the intercom.

The Manipulator thinks of something quick to keep the Engineer focused, “Erm… I’ll take care of this. You may know more about working the controls than I do anyway.” She grabs the tripod’s tail and drags him off to stuff him underneath some desks. After pushing him in tightly (and covering the space with some chairs) she finds a note on the desk.

The Manipulator holds it up to read, “Hey. I found something. It looks like a notice for the employees.

The Engineer looks over the dashboard, trying to shift his focus away from the death of the employee and onto his expertise. He steadies his hand and takes the controls. Seems like a standard booth panel. It’s a stolen space station; labels next to giant buttons are in a comprehensible language. After making sure everything’s in operation he pushes the handle and the portcullis below begins to shift down with the sliding of metal. But it doesn’t go far. Sparks fly and the gate makes an unpleasant grinding sound. The tripod maintenance worker sharply turns around after the sudden Ka-CHUNK the gate makes. The door seems to be stuck and cannot go any lower.

The worker looks up to your booth with irritated jabbering and yelling—swinging a fist in the air with its electric nozzle on the other hand. The Engineer ducks and leaves the lever for now.

Your collars buzz with a message from the Cleaner, “Well you certainly know how to draw attention to yourself.

The Constructor hisses in, “Quiet, you mannequin. I can see the forklift guy coming back. And he’s bringing a few extra friends to work on whatever they’ve been busy with. What is going on up there? Hurry up and do something, guys.

The engineer stammers and he looks over the dashboard again—a bit more carefully this time, “Sssorry—I’m just… trying to get used to the controls. Uh… W-What are we supposed to accomplish here?

The manipulator softly sighs, “We just need to get into the cargo hold as soon as we can. Whatever’s going on in this station, it looks like all the workers are ordered to barricade the entrances. We’ll need to act quickly.

The engineer ponders if he could simply fix the gate from here—he looks down at the lone tripod worker as his friends pull up next to him. The Gard concludes that the issue isn’t here in the control booth, but on the bottom floor where the tripod is making repairs. In the process of locking everything down—the gate must’ve malfunctioned earlier.

Down below, the worker points at the booth. His friends are curious indeed. The constructor mutters into the intercom, “Guys, I hope your blasters are hot—looks like you’ll be preparing for a fight if you don’t do something.

We’re working on it! Why don’t you do something to stall them?

What can Team A do?
A) Njar and Sertis can distract or stall them. But how?
B) Njar and Sertis will let them pass--thereby flanking the workers once they reach the others.

Vesiar should simply sabotage the dashboard. With that, due to the lockdown, the workers won't be able to contact anyone. Which means that we don't have to kill them or anything. These workers seem unarmed, so Njar and Sertis can simply move in, pointing guns at the workers, and the workers should surrender. Waiter, bodybags for four~” purrs the cleaner, preparing his watersaw.

The manipulator scoffs in response and conjures a plan for the engineer, “I don’t see us evading them for long before they find the body. I need you to sabotage the dashboard so they can’t contact anyone in the entire station! Can you do that?

Sabotage?

Un-fix it! Whatever!

The manipulator hurries to the staircase to see if there’s a solution to impede the Tripods. It’s a long spiraling, metal stairway with thin guard rails. Silently our mercenaries approach the closest tripods. The constructor steps up and grapples one—forcing the barrel of her pistol against his temple. Her hostage gasps but freezes up.

The helmeted worker notices erratic movement from his peripherals and shifts his gaze in time for a watersaw to swipe across his chest. Fabric shreds with the silent hiss of the blade. The attack causes the tripodic mook to stumble to the ground. The cleaner keeps the saw hovering over its victim with a delighted sneer.

Clearly, the rest notice the commotion and face the mercenaries.

The constructor yells, “Nobody make another step! You all know how this works. Surrender now and drop on the floor!

• Njar has grappled a tripod and holds him at gunpoint.
• Sertis swiped his watersaw across a tripod’s chest, slicing his jumpsuit.
• The workers were caught in a surprise attack. One mercenary can spend a free action next.

Due to the surprise attack, everyone is technically in combat. If you can guess the enemy’s target or type of attack our mercenaries will be better prepared to withstand their strike. That’s right, the tripods may unexpectedly resist or perhaps they’ll cooperate—you’ll need to go with your gut to shoot quick or trust they’ll stand down... for now.

I see a common theme going on…

>What’s the difference between Done and Occupied?
It means Sertis finished his action and is done for the round—now everyone else will have their turn before round two begins. This is a turn-based quest when combat is initiated.
Thus, three suggestions are invalid ‘cause they didn’t read the team’s status and thought Sertis could keep attacking this round.

Veisar is occupied with sabotaging the dashboard, as ordered by Driga [>>980270]. But perhaps I should’ve said Busy. So I changed it in this post. The [1] indicates how many rounds are left before Veisar is finished with his task. Now, if you would rather have him forget the sabotage (or anything that occupies concentration i.e. repairing, healing, focusing on a complicated task under pressure)—you may suggest that as well.

>What consequence does Grappling have[…]?
This quest will use conditions and mechanics similar to 5e D&D. A grappled character cannot move from their space—but can attempt to break the grapple on their turn. It can keep targets from running away or hold hostage.

The manipulator predicted what was coming. The welder had scrambled back to his hands and shoots the eigo a dirty look. Like striking steel, he gashes the floor with his welding tool before leaping.

Despite an advantage with her prediction--this tripod was seething with hate. His aggression erratic. Like a matador the manipulator attempts to aptly dodge with her coat swaying behind.

His tool sears into her labcoat and tears it off, singeing the threads. ‘Shame, that was a good coat...’ she thinks.

The engineer is stuck between helping his comrade or focusing his attack on the lone tripod. If left unchecked he could run away and call for reinforcements.

The gard flicks his wrist and wields a pickaxe. A click and a shwing, and the blade deploys with a slight plasma arc.

I, uh, don’t typically mistreat tools like this...” he says before making a giant stride for a lizard his size. The thoughts of his first victim has reminded him to be a little more careful. Perhaps too careful.

Goggles reorients himself in time to slip away. The engineer’s axe meets solid floor.

The worker is distracted by his bottomless predicament, even when the constructor was half-paying attention. The tripod lunges at her, who in turn swings a brightsword to block his dinky plasma cutter.

How the engineer and goggles fight is quite silly to witness. Both are reluctant to take a swing, so there’s a lot of stalling. A lot of fake outs. Like 4th graders about to tussle in a cafeteria. Plus Tonka tools.

Goggles takes out a box cutter and pushes his thumb on the switch to expose a sharp blade. “You guys are madhouse!” he yips, and lunges at the engineer. The tripod swipes his weapon and cuts off the gard’s belt.

I’m warning you! I... I can hurt ya real bad!

The manipulator assesses the confrontation with the welder. The way he whips to and fro, swiping his tool across within an inch from the mercenary. She waits for the time to strike.

Be still, you wriggling--!

She wallops him with a charged power fist; its pistons spew compressed air and a strange, cold aura discharges from the knuckles. A stasis containment field envelops the tripod—turning the subject blue and delaying his movements. Any fabric on his chest is blasted with a giant hole.

The welder is slowed. His attacks are disadvantaged, while attacks against him are at an advantage until the end of his next turn.

All four of the mercenaries surround the lone tripod as he breaks free of his cage. The engineer is first to lunge behind him and attempt to finish the battle.

His pickaxe hooks the collar of his shirt and yanks the threads off the top.

"Ehrm... S-Sorry about this..."

The tripods have no more turns this round.

The cleaner throws his arms to take away the tripod’s only means of defense—but the tripod swings it down and smacks against the cleaner’s hands.

Ow! You-- You rotten, little..!

The foe whips around erratically, forcing the imortan to back away shaking his hands.

Well come on, someone put this worm down already!

The tripods have no more turns this round.

The manipulator charges up a punch and clocks the final threads off the tripod. His wrench flings off like a boomerang and lands among the boxcars. His spirit is finally broken.

Am I going to have to finish what everyone starts?

FIGHT SUCCESS!

The dust settles as all tripods groan in defeat.

The manipulator collects the remains of her ruined coat, scorched by the torch of the welder. “Is everyone alright? Sigh, I’ll never get these ash marks out...

The cleaner meanders around the fallen. “Let’s see what we can strip off of these pathetic worms~

A-And what should we do with them? We’re not just gonna leave them here, right?” asks a timid engineer.

No, you idiot!” scoffs the constructor, “We’ll figure out a way to make sure they don’t squeal to their friends.

What does each mercenary do?
What is the next plan of action?

Interrogate them for enemy positions and textile stockpiles, then lock them in a storage container. They won't be found until the next shift. Now, where did these arrows go again and where were we headed?

The most intimidating member(s) of the group should interrogate while others not interrogating repair any damaged clothing. Information such as when the next shift should arrive might be useful. >>1007212 such topics mentioned are also important. Once everything has been extracted, throw them into a shipping container and lock the door.

The engineer is already collecting threads to fix his own suit. He stitches up the constructor’s sleeve in the meantime.

>Where did these arrows go again and where were we headed?
As an engineer, the arrows are just indicators of pumps and wires beneath the floorboards for repair and maintenance. It’s a bit different from ship to ship depending on which species designed the Czari. The gard recognizes it to be of xingast origin.
The giant door to the cargo hold is now unguarded, and is a possible route to journey further into the harvester after the interrogation. [>>963422]

The other two mercenaries round up the tripods and find a concealed shipping container to herd them in.

>When the next shift arrives
The eigo guesstimates from the notice letter she has found earlier [>>976342]. She passes this information to the imortan out of earshot of the hostages. “I don’t think there will be another shift for a while. According to the notice Veisar and I found, everyone is ordered to lock everything down. These workers were repairing a stuck door--perhaps the last shift before shutting everything out. And who knows when they’ll be found. But it may be for a long, long while. Let’s just get what we can and proceed in the cargo hold.

>Interrogate them for enemy positions and textile stockpiles
Once the last naked worker is nudged inside the container, the manipulator begins. “Alright, I’m going to make this quick and I don’t have time for any bullshit. First; I need to know your crew’s positions patrolling throughout the Czari. And where you hold textile stockpiles and armories.

You’re asking the wrong guy, you gaunt bleater. We’re just repairmen! Let us go, we don’t know anything!
Yeah! And even if we did, we’d never tell you!
Shuddup, Erm! You’re not helping any of us with that tough guy talk!
Do your worst. We may be regular joes maintaining this floating dumpster, but you’ll be no match for what’s inside!
Now they’ll want to know what’s in store inside!
I mean... you know! Tough, top-of-the-line elite tripod warriors. C’mon! It’s not a secret. They’ll wipe the floor with you pests!
There’s a reason we’re just maintenance staff...

The cleaner mutters with the manipulator and grins, “I’ll get them to talk for sure. I’ll make them sing like a nausagor choir! I’ll just need me a few minutes with them alone. And I’m sure we’ll get all the answers we need~

How do the mercenaries proceed?

Pass, Sertis. These containers aren't soundproof. Let's hop the stuck door and go find out what's in store.

If nothing else can be gained, lock the container and move on.

You mean torture them.” the manipulator surmises, hands on her hips with her snout tilted.
The cleaner wafts his arm at the assumption, “Oh, pleeeeease~ torture implies one of us is having fun! What the runt with the gusto needs is a bit of... goading.” With a gloved finger he manually spins the saw on his tool. “I promise I won’t leave them bleeding profusely.

She retains her stoic expression with eyes focused on the cleaner. Her hand stretches out to the container door--it swings with a metallic trill until shut with a heavy ‘ka-CHUNK!’ “I won’t let anything of the sort happen. No, I doubt they know anything worthwhile. We’re continuing further inside the Czari. We’re locking them here.” The latch is pulled. “Do you understand?
The imortan sneers, he steps forward until their faces are within several inches. His voice was still smooth but with a subtle growl. “Hrnnff, who appointed you team leader anyway? How I conduct my profession will always benefit our mission. Sooner or later we may have to... twist an arm. Tripods are a dime a dozen anyway--

This is not up to discussion. We’re leaving them here--and that’s final. Now let’s move.” The manipulator turns away.
He scoffs, holstering his watersaw. “After you...

Our mercenaries regroup. As planned before the fight, the constructor conjures several steps to assist in hopping over the bay door. The hardlight staircase floats and bobs in midair as each merc vaults over.

Anything?” asks the engineer to the eigo. She shakes her head.

The constructor signals with her hands like a spellcaster, “I knew they had nothin’ on em. Come on, let’s get this heist over with. Fifty-grand is waiting for us in there!

The mercenaries exit the Hangar Bay.
