Well, he was in full Peacekeeper mode at the time and she was a suspect, so if he did fancy her he would have kept it down out of his sense of professionalism and duty. ...And it could be that if he is actually attracted to ladies of Lily's size he may feel he can't pursue them due to the strong stigma in Vark society around obesity that'd land on him if he did. But, again, this is just speculation on your part.

Also, you'd better understand why other species act the way they do if you start from the fact they can't mind-meld. As far as you know it’s actually impossible to travel faster than light. Instead, you’ll have to manipulate space and time through the use of gravity. You’re not sure how exactly it works, though.

They send some kind of drone that can last for eons and then change its gravity to such an extreme amount that time will pass for it much quicker. Thus, a journey that might take a month relative to us will actually take thousands of years for the drone. Then it simply opens a small gate when it arrives to let other machinery through to build the gateway.
