Let me summarize:
The first step in raising an army is preparing for said army. That means a steady supply of food and places to house the soldiers in.
To that end I need people who are not afraid to live in the frontier. People who are driven by a cause, not by coin.

This will be difficult.

I recall you suggested that I visit the refugee camp to the south to ask for help. It seems like a good idea to act on that now.

It will be half a days travel from here. I can get there in the evening.

If the word is out that you still support Malto, that might cause problems if the people don't like him.
Check with Timotei and Sticks about politics. I doubt they'll be much help, but it might warn you off some pitfalls.

Dont forget about that damn tower. Mr evil has his fingers in that pie, plus we nicked their prisoner.
No. 79788 ID: e0499d

Don't forget... you're not welcome there.

We need to have Timotei or Sticks go for you. If only there was someway you could communicate to them while you're planning in the temple...

Even better, if there's some way we can communicate with them too...

How're we gonna do that?
No. 79789 ID: 8a24e0

What's in that fortress to the south? It seems it might be a viable source of aid. We should check the refuge camp first, of course.

Ridder, you should probably check on Sticks. She seemed sort of sad last night.

The fortress to the south is the center of North Piacevole. My past home where I am no longer welcome.

Checking on my underlings goes hand in hand with asking for their advice. I find Sticks in the Hall of Man.

"Sticks, I need your advice. How does the common man feel about Lord Malto in these parts?"
"I think it's looked down upon to talk about them, but I don't know if he's actually hated."
"Alright. How are you feeling?"
"Uhm, I'm fine. I'm a little bored."

Regardless, if he did leave, he may have headed back to that cave lair with the 'great evil' inside it.

Thus the plan becomes reliant on coin anyway? Perhaps it's for the best.
A handful of strong mercenaries can do more than a hundred peasants driven by fear.. and a salary is easier to keep track of than a heart full of fireworks.

I just need to hold on to the pennyless loyalty these two have for me to form an unwavering base.

"I understand. I apologize for keeping things to myself. You both have powerful talents that are going to waste just sitting here. No longer! From now on I will be going on many trips to find us allies.
Timotei, I will be bringing you if I need a strong hand. Sticks, I will be bringing you if I need subtlety. I'm sure we will get quite busy soon."

Timotei and Sticks can easily make good income. Especially Sticks.

The refugee camp south needs to be tapped. You can go work on getting peasents to rebuild.
So all three of you can get stuff done. Find Timotei a easy but fruitful dungeon to 'purify'; Find Sticks a easy place to rob.

The woman from before has made her way back to the church. She blocks the entrance.

"Lost your followers already? Typical Malto-scum. You are so selfabsorbed in your little quests that you neglect everyone around you. It doesn't matter anyway. Besides, Malto would have been able to take action or inspire his followers, like what he did with the trapped goblins in the mine years ago. No rebel knight such as you would have done so, you would have given up for a more direct evil you could easily smite. Apparently, from your world, that would have been the Lord Malto."

Her rudeness is completely uncalled for. We had a mutually beneficial agreement, and she is breaking it with a terrible attitude.
It is time I confront her.

Take your flag and leave, try to fight for another day because your weapon is not in your grasp. It's much too dangerous for diplomacy. "Before I leave, I pray you can find respect for even those who have wronged you for within them might be a good friend and a great warrior. The life of a knight requires the capability for forgiveness." Only speak when you can defend yourself from her barbaric anger, just in case.
No. 80854 ID: e0499d

"For God's Sake. Tell me what the hell Malto did at least. I'm fumbling in the dark with people who hate me for something I never did. Just tell me. I have nothing against you, So why anything against me."
Make deal to deface the flag if she can convince you that Malto is horrible.
No. 80855 ID: 44ad00

Sir Ridder, I think its time to drop the knightly persona and talk to her person to person. She's got a point about the deal, but to act with this kind of extreme prejudice is uncalled for.

"What in the hell did I do to you to gain such hateful words? You've made it loud and clear that my fallen lord was someone you absolutely despise, but you've given me nary a reason nor idea why and refuse to still. While we've vastly different opinions of the man, I am not LORD MALTO.
No. 80860 ID: 476456

No. 80861 ID: a7ef8c

What have we done to deserve such words! And she acts as if she had just commited and intolerable sin by conversing with you, when it is her who cannot see through her blind anger twoards your master! truely a alliance between the both of you would lie in utter shambles and you will most likely result in being registered as such filth as she spouts from her mouth. It is doubtful that anything could com out of this union other than bickering and rage. To put it simply "He who touches pitch will be wholly defiled by it" (Sirach 13:1).
No. 80863 ID: e0499d

"You may do what you want with me, but I will not rest until that evil is ended. The only way you'll stop me from ending that evil is taking my life."

Voices, it is clear to me you are gravely misunderstanding the situation.
In front of me stands a revolutionary: A woman responsible for the destruction of my kingdom.. and the death of my Lord.
I may not be Lord Malto, but I am loyal to him for eternity. Would me and Vita Vispa have met during the revolution, it would be on the battlefield. One of us would not walk away.

But after my loyalty to my lord comes my duty to protect my kingdom's people. Though my kingdom is no longer mine by name, I will continue to fight for it.
Vite Vispa is not much different from me: Only her loyalties lie on the other end of the spectrum.
That is the only thing preventing out-right hostilities right now.

No. 80871 ID: 276781

Don't waste your time with her. There's nothing for you in this dead town, and dealing with her will only end badly.
It seems that clinging desperately to 'goodness' is getting you nowhere.
You have no honor. Your allies left you to rot. Just about everyone else seems to think you as naught but a monster or villain.

Perhaps you should become a villain, and show them just how right they were... but at any rate, if you have no other ideas, you could make your way back to Coriander's tower. At least there, they accepted you.
No. 80878 ID: 5d5878

This will only end in fighting if you stay. Take your banner and leave this place where you are no longer wanted. The one responsible for this, this evil man, must be stopped. You have to find him and stop him yourself if you mean to regain the support of the people.

Ridder, as a voice, one question for you.

If Lord Malto was the cause of this situation... If he set the village on fire... would you stand by him...

If you would, it is time for you to once more knock on the door of the cave. There is nothing more for you to do except embrace the evil and use it to bring peace.

If not, then you are not fighting for good. You are fighting for a dead cause. Vitta, then, is on the side of good now.

The choice is yours
No. 80885 ID: e75a2f

Lets set something straight, Ridder. You are not a knight. You have no honor, no lord to champion, and no cause to pursue beyond personal obligation.

Vita is not a knight either. She is a radical; a revolutionary championing a cause that is as dead as your own, completely devoid of any knightly honor.

You are not a knight. Vita is not a knight. You are both holding onto personal beliefs and goals that died with your lord. What you do is without obligation to anyone and anything. You can choose to hold up this hollow facade just as Vita is holding up hers, and march around with imaginary pride and honor just as she does, but the reality does not change.

Right now you and Vita are in-capable of cooperating because of this facade. Make it painfully clear to her that she is no knight, that her cause is as dead as yours, and that continuing to bicker about it is unproductive and places the people you both wish to help in greater harm than good.

The first step would be to cast off that banner you still drag around with you. Lord Malto is dead. Your service to his people is in YOUR name, not HIS. Old wounds cannot heal in the presence of old idealism.

The words of a coward. Of a man who knows no permanence, but will bend and shift and squirm like a snake to appease whatever flight of fancy strikes him, whatever slight change in the wind might come upon him. He buckles and bends and knows no honor, no truth, and certainly no loyalty. He is one who throws off all promises whenever it pleases him to do so, whenever the upper hand can be gained through dishonesty. The words of a coward, and nothing more. Ignore them.

Planning failed; only made your two companions leave you.

A man cant raise a nation from nowhere just with a banner. Its a matter of knowing the right people, connections. The only connection fate offered us, required you to leave your banner.

So, yes. We´re in a corner. Its either charging in to try to die with a spark of misguided honor (or at best, hope for lucking out when you´re in there and scoring heavy intel), or start travelling the lands aimlessly until something else shows up.

Seems like most voices just want to get it over with though.

Or how about we take the third option. here's what i think we should do, we should return to "boss's" headquarters, from there we can "pledge" our "allegiance" to him. Just think about it for a second, if we can get into his base of operations we can take it down from the inside out. And when he's alone and abandoned under his broken hold, we smite evil like we've never smited evil before.

No. 81482 ID: e3f578

If you really don't even want to touch the place at all, Ridder, I suggest a thorough inspection of surrounding towns or villages. Ask around the goblins, kobolds or in Sepia town, corrupt townships love to betray its members if the boss collects supplies there. You should be able to handle any goddamn thing there if your confident that place of his is the most dangerous.

Do you still need Timotei for detecting evil? The highest sources of evil should direct to you of places he's been. Even in the hub of Sepia town his aura should be noticeably different. Goblins may also have some interesting Allies of Lord Malto seeing as how he saved a previous generation of them.

And stop calling us abstract voices, we're you. Don't try to go the insane route and say all the crazy thoughts are by different people inside you. That'll lead to downfall.

Soon I find signs of hunting and gathering, and finally a beaten trail through the dense vegetation. I follow it.

Through the trees I can barely make out a settlement.
Before I can approach any closer, two goblins approach me instead.

"Hey! Who are you? What are you doing here?"

"My name is Ridder. I am knight-errant."
"A knight? What are you doing all the way out here?"
"I am investigating the man operating out of the dungeon to the east."
"Ooh.. I hope you're not his enemy then, because I heard that he defeated the Red Fang by his own hand. That monster terrorized these lands for years but then he rolled in with nothing but his bare hands and rip Red Fang to shreds.."
"I also heard he kidnapped the tinkerer from the next village!"
"Shut up, Bark, he's a knight, he's obviously not interested in that."

Wait - if this 'boss' defeated a monster that had been terrorizing the lands for years, is he truly evil?
Though there is that rumor he kidnapped the tinkerer, but... how much truth is there in that rumor?

Maybe you should visit that other village and see if they need anything from you - and you could ask about this missing tinkerer.

"Huh? You mean Finnie? Nah, she went to work for 'im. I dunno. It's a bit boring here after she left though. I woulda loved to rock that ass, if you know what I mean."

This means the "Boss" is friendly or atleast neutral with this village. That doesn't bode well.

"Anyway, I gotta get back to work. Oh- A word of advice stranger: Don't take this trail over to the next village. They've got some odd habits over there. Odd indeed."

The goblins continues on his way.

This is fucking getting to me now. Ask about the strange customs. You have a reputation to maintain, right? So you want to fit in with the locals. When in Rome, do as the Romans do! If you commit any faux pas or break any taboos here you'll never get the help you need, so politely inquire about the local customs and traditions. Don't just assume you know what you're doing or you're going to have pie on your face.

It seems odd that, despite forming some sort of reasonable accord with these goblins, the dark Boss should go to the effort of specifically recruiting just a single one. Wouldn't it make more sense for him to amass an army, bringing all the goblins to his direct control? And instead, he brings a single goblin.

Obviously this goblin must be special. Do some investigating as to this particular goblin's abilities, because obviously she must have been capable of some serious destructive power. To avoid rousing suspicion, present yourself as a lovestruck admirer, and this "Finnie" as the object of your desire.
No. 81791 ID: 1db014

You still need a base of operations and at least some helpers if you're ever going to manage to tackle this individual. I still believe Sticks and Tim will yet prove useful, but perhaps they need some time to themselves. When the time is right we'll come back for them, and by then, perhaps their attitude will be somewhat improved.
In the meantime, broaden your horizons. If your foe has recruited Goblins, perhaps you should do the same. Yes, I know what you're thinking: monsters on your side? But it will help you get into the head of your opponent, his dealings, and further, they're less likely to betray you. Goblins have low standards. A little kindness and a show of equality -- of brotherhood and cooperation instead of ownership, of handshaking instead of head-petting -- is likely enough, since goblins are so used to being treated as less than equal.

Personally I'd say you should go after the one you spoke with earlier. He seems capable and single-minded when it comes to work, so that much is a start already. Besides, he seems to have a personal investment in Finnie, the goblin your sworn nemesis recruited, so he would have a personal stake in finding her, and returning her from the dark influence of the dungeonmaster. You can't lose!

This could be trouble. Some of the worst slaughters in history were made possible by technological superiority. Remember the repeating crossbow? The rolling ballista? The clockwork-powered bees?
I suggest we keep an eye out.

No, that's it! If we are to compete, we need technological power as well. We will in short order need to take on a particularly intelligent and inventive recruit, and in so doing we'll also have a good task to put them towards. Two birds with one stone, am I right?

I did my best to whipe out the location of the refugee camp now that it has moved.

Good locations for strongholds are difficult to find. It appears the Boss' has secured a strong point dab in the middle of this area.
I have heard of old dwarven fortresses in the mountains to the west, particular in the vulcano, but eventhough it would be the most effecient military wise it'd put a large distance between us and our foe.
The other possibility may be to follow up on rumors I heard of elven ruins in the woods to the north east, but these might be considerably less well defended and eroding due to aggressive flora.
In both cases I have no idea if there may still be ancestors present.

I don't know where I could find a troll or ogre in these parts. I will have to find someone who does know.

Looking at both possible strongholds is the wisest course of action, but will also cost a lot of time. Time which allows our foe to grow ever stronger. I have to keep that in mind.

You know, now that you mention it, maybe we're not done here.
I mean, think about it. Your big enemy boss guy has allied himself with this village, right? Well there's a lot more to leading a righteous force than just the soldiers standing next to you! You need to start winning some hearts and minds! You need allies, same as any other force does! You can't possibly manage everyone at once so it's nice to be able to call on some self-sufficient forces that are ready to aid you. After all, it's easier to be able to call on a whole pre-established goblin village than to try and lead every goblin under your rank and file.
If the boss has allies, you need allies. And what better place to start than right here? Why not exploit the natural distrust between these two neighboring gobbo villages? They don't like each other much so it shouldn't be hard to convince the others to join you. Go there, seek an audience with their elder(s), and see what you can do to win them over.

Besides, you don't want to piss him off. This isn't the kind of guy you want turning traitor down the line.

Once that's out of the way, let him in on more of your plans and ask him if he has any insight on a place nearby you can occupy -- an abandoned fort as previously considered, or perhaps a den of evil that may need cleansing first.

Whatever the case, we need us a base, and then we'll retrace our steps to the place where that one goblin's case puts her local disgrace on the other's displace, and curses every trace of her squarish-shaped face. With two lackeys on brace we'll present them our case and by good God's grace we'll soon make our chase towards the evil one's space.

I hold out my hand. He takes it and we exchange firm shakes.

"Black Fang, I will pursue the honor of being your master to the best of my abilities. May our future together be long and fruitful."

Black Fang seems to be silenced by this. He holds onto my hand. Not as a challenge, but simply in thought.

"I ain't ever had someone treat me so formally.. ..I won't disappoint you, master."

He shakes my hand again.

"Now then, let me level with you. I am raising an army to fight the man operating out of the dungeon to the west--"
"That's Red Fang's territory."
"No longer. Red Fang has been slain by its current occupant."
"I am in the middle of forging alliances with a goblin village: I will need your help with that."
"Just let me know what I gotta do."
"I need you to put an end to a logging operation of their rival village. They're getting too close to comfort.. But, I need you to refrain for killing anyone."
"..Hmmrr.. Understood.. but.. that isn't much of a fight.."
"Neither is killing weak lumberjacks, Black Fang. The real battles come later."
"Hmrr.. Got it. I'll show them a good.. a good good time."
"Good. But before that: Do you know of any suitable locations that we can turn into our base of operations?"
"Nah. Architecture ain't my turf. I deal in blades."
"I understand. Let us be off then."

No injuries, minimum damage. Mission successful.

Well, let's head out to those Elven Ruins then right? Maybe we can set up a base there.

"The deed is done. Your woods have been returned to you."

The village elder rubs his hands nervously.

"Y-yes.. My scouts reported.. Black Fang chasing them off. Does that mean you.. you are controlling him?"
"That is correct. Black Fang is now under my command."
"Oh.. well.. We will be glad to be your ally. We'll keep tabs on the next village to make sure they won't be able to aid your enemy. Is.. Is that enough?"
"That will do. Thank you, honored elder. Now I must leave to take care of other things. I will get in touch when things have settled down."
"You will be taking.. Black Fang along with you, yes?"
"That is correct."

So I understand that the elven ruins are the best location?
Looking at the map again, I see the merits in being close to several settlements. It may also be easier to cross through forest than steep mountain slopes.
Aggressive flora may still be a problem, however. I will need capable workers to restore the place and hopefully improve it.

I can travel north, rest at Sepia Town, and continue east to the forest. The travel itself will take less than a day, but that does not including the break.

That said, am I done in these woods?

Take a look a the Kobold Village, they are shy but I think it would do well to check in while we are here.

We'll need some cheap labor for now if we're to set up a true base of operations.
The kobolds here in these woods should do nicely.
Perhaps we shall learn something more of this mysterious 'Boss' as well.

Ah yes, I haven't investigated the kobold village yet. And indeed, I have heard that kobolds are dedicated craftsman. Hopefully there will be one who can help me restore the ruins.
I'd rather trust a kobold than someone from Sepia Town, that blight on our culture.

With Black Fang's directions I find a fast route to the nearest kobold village. According to my squire it is also the largest kobold settlement in the area.
However.. it is eerily quiet.

Black Fang's aim is spot on. I manage a clean entry through the door, or rather what used to be a door.
The darkness hits me like a thick blanket. It almost feels as if it would have stopped me had I not gained considerable momentum.
Even so, it feels strangely welcoming.

I hear a young girl's soft singing.

Cast her to a world of wonder
Would she e'er see home again..."

Right now we lack a source of food, and a way of making money. Farming, hunting, carpentry, blacksmithing, mining, plant gathering and alchemy all come to mind as being useful.

Well thought! A herbalist and a carpenter will turn the forest's vegetation from an obstacle into an advantage.

I find two skilled and particulary eager kobolds who wish to join the fight.
One is Iesgip, who has great knowledge of plants and how to cultivate them, and some skill at tracking and trapping.
The other is Nakraska, a humble but capable carpenter and lumberjack, who is also able to craft simple weapons and tools in times of need.

They're willing to join me right away.
