Once, I was a knight.
Proud and great.
My skill at the blade was only matched by my presence at the court.

Our kingdom was invincible.. or so I thought.

My arrogance was our downfall.

I failed to protect the king and his family. Now all of them are dead or missing... thus so is my life.

I am a failed knight with no lord to redeem me.

Only when I stopped talking did I notice how the atmosphere into the jolly tavern broke into pieces. The silence pierced my heart. I was used to it, but this time I had caused it.
But was it my fault, or the bartender's for asking about me?

Hey, piece of shit.

Suddenly I hear a voice rise up next to me.

I don't like people who brag.

The large fellow is obviously shortcoming in the mental area, but makes more than up for it with his physical prowess.

Now, now, Nickai.
The bartender interrupts.
Give the boy some space. He has obviously been through alot.

I could use some help deciding how to respond in this situation.
No. 76925 ID: cf407a

You may be a failed knight but god damn, your honour is at stake, challenge him to a DUEL!
No. 76926 ID: 754774

Buy him a drink to calm him and avoid a scene.
No. 76929 ID: fb5d8e

I will follow your peaceful suggestion.
Indeed, let us not cause a scene. I will buy you a drink.
I don't want your stinking pisswater, boy.

I will have none of this. This man is obviously corrupted by the physical edge he has over others.

Nickai, step down now or accept my challenge to duel!

Why you slimey little fuck..

Now, now, boys! Take it outside, will you? Stop causing a scene.
The bartender stops us. He sounds worried about his tavern, but confident that neither of us will seriously hurt eachother.
No. 76930 ID: cf407a

Accept the duel, once you and him are outside, kick him in the balls.
No. 76934 ID: 5d5878

Ask him if he accepts your challenge, or if he is a coward. Take it outside, the bartender is just trying to run a business.
No. 76937 ID: e0499d

He looks big and slow. So a duel weapon that gives you distance is advantageous.
Have a duel using wooden poles
No. 76939 ID: 34470e

He follows me outside. Fighting with pole arms in an open area will be perfect for I am welltrained in spearfighting. Consequently, my spear is my main weapon.
Do you agree to battle with poles?

Sure thing. I will grind you to a mush anyway!

He grabs a thick and heavy pole from the street. It almost seems like a small tree.
I will fight with my spear... but I can only use the blunt end. The handicap should be negated by my familiarity with the weapon.

A large crowd gathers around us.

Well? You gonna fight me or you a coward?
No. 76955 ID: 43d730

Get someone to give a signal to start, then Knees-Gut-Wrists in three quick shots.
No. 76957 ID: 1db014

This is pretty good stuff right off the bat but I just have one small technical request: It's pretty hard to follow who's talking sometimes, so maybe a format in which the protagonist's speech is distincted from the speech of other characters would help? Right now it's hard to tell if it's the oaf or the knight talkin'. Just throw quotes around speech, maybe only put bold on the protagonist's lines?
No. 76958 ID: fb5d8e
File 125832556679.png - (46.08KB , 700x700 , 7.png )

Getting someone to count down will be a good idea.
"Someone count down and give us a signal when to start to ensure a fair fight!"

A certain gentleman in the crowd raises his hand.
"I'll do it. Get ready... three.. two.."

I tighten my grip on my spear and get into position. Suddenly a heavy woman forces her way to the front of the crowd.
"Nickai! Don't get hurt! We need you in tomorrow's harvest."
"Don't worry, ma, I'll make short work of this outsider."
The oaf responds arrogantly.

"..one.. Fight!"
No. 76962 ID: f21281

Go for disabling blows only. Nothing that will permanently harm him. We don't need to be a dick and mutilate him after his mom just told him that he's needed for the harvest tomorrow.
No. 76966 ID: 1db014

Teach him a lesson, but don't hurt him too badly. Even if he is an oaf, he's drunk, and his family obviously needs him. Don't embarrass him too much in front of his own mother.
No. 76976 ID: 8ce2bf

Let him win. Winning isn't going to help you any, he'll just form a grudge and you might get even more people against you if you hurt him and he can't help with the harvest.
Going to let your arrogance get the best of you again?

It's true. I have nothing to gain from winning this fight.
This man's mental handicap is so great that his mother is forced to look after him. He is no villain or bandit.. Just a giant fool.
If this village makes sure his strength is used for good causes like the harvest I have no right to pick a fight with him. Arrogance will hold no more sway over me.

"I did not know you were required at the harvest. I stand down."

The crowd around us falls silent, as does the man. A minute later, he laughs awkwardly.
"Yeah, that's right! Now you know how strong I am you scared, huh? Get the hell out of my village, vagrant!"

I don't see the purpose of intimidation when I just stood down, nor is there any need for charity. These people can handle the harvest themselves.
I head back to the tavern.

"Hey, you're not hurt? You.. actually defeated Nickai?"
"No, I stood down because he is needed in the harvest."
"Heh, I don't blame you. He sure has some muscle.."

We need to get our asses back on track, prove ourselves as noble and honorable. Ask the bartender if he knows of any possible jobs for you, something to prove your righteousness. Any criminal organizations around that need busting? Bandits that need slaying? Missing persons that need to be recovered? Monsters that need to be defeated?

We need to make a name for ourselves, so random shmucks don't start shit in bars EVER AGAIN.

"Good man, I am interested in proving my righteousness. Is there anything terrible that needs to be dealt with? Monsters, criminals, missing people?"
A splendid opportunity to ask.

"Speak of the devil.. A bloke just like you came through here the other day, wanting to deal with monsters.. We don't have much troubles these days. If you want to find trouble you should head to the tower south of here."

My inventory includes my flagspear, a dagger, a crossbow with bolts, and enough coins for all necessities.
If I'm heading down south to the portcity then I will pass the tower as well.

The night passes without trouble. The tower is soon in sight.
Flowerbeds cover the surrounding hill, while its walls are decorated with lush climbing plants.

In front of its main door sits a lone goblin over what seem to be cut up hedge-animals.
Part of the garden is completely ruined.

Once again I will attempt the peaceful approach. This time there is a lot more risk involved.
"What's troubling you, goblin?"
[i]She looks up with a surprised expression. Her close proximity to the tower must make her feel very secure as she shows no signs of fear.
"Oh hello, sir. Yesterday some mad man came into the garden and chopped up all the hedge animals. We caught him, though. He'll hang at high noon."

I can't stand by idley as a man gets killed for ruining plants, but I best ask about it some more.
"A high price for a petty crime. I mean no disrespect towards your topiaries, but surely a life is worth more. Plants may be regrown, but could you unkill a man?"
"Oh, I don't know about unkilling but he was being pretty weird. He was yelling about evil and shredding the bushes apart like someone poisoned by a cavetroll's fungus. Seems dangerous enough to hang to me. Anyway.. These hedgeanimals are completely ruined."
The goblin sighs with great despair.
No. 77238 ID: 426169

"Tell me, how was the man apprehended?"
I'm betting a gold sovereign that he was given a sleeping drought during a "drinking contest" with an orc.

Looting is sort of like reading the note, wouldn't you say?
No. 77240 ID: 5d5878

I wouldn't say that at all. One has to loot the note before one can read it, generally.

I don't see on what grounds I can suspect such a thing. I don't even see an orc around here.
I'll leave her to her business.

The vines look strong enough to carry my weight. If I head to a higher floor I may be able to find the man and find out what is really going on.

Sneak into someone's place of residence? Surely that is beneath a proper knight.

Indeed, it would be proper to atleast try the direct approach first, though I will attempt more backhanded ways to save a life if necessary.
"Who is the master of this tower? I would much desire to speak with him."
The goblins look at me for a moment, then gets up. She stares at me with a mixture of awe and pity.
"Oh.. Okay. I'll go see if she's available. Will you come in?"

As long as I can wave no other flag I will honor and treasure the one from my past, no matter how torn we become.

I pick up on the goblin's hesitation.

"Is something the matter with this arrangement?"
I ask cautiously.
"I don't think so.. I just think you're the first visitor we got that was so.. honest is the word I guess."

"I thank you for your invitation, and will honor it. May I inquire your master's name?"
"It's Commander Coriander Salamander.. Oh, she's available."

The tower's mistress sits confidently in her humble office. Though the room is small and the furniture insignificant, the area radiates with a powerful aura of leadership and determination.

"Yes? Who are you? What is your business here?"

"I am unaware of the gravity of his deeds; this is why I asked. What exactly has the man done, and has he had a fair hearing?"
"The man in question has destroyed my property most thoroughly, and has been causing general chaos. As this tower is under my complete jurisdiction I am the judge over the man's future."
"I was under the impression this was merely the outpost of some greater lord?"
"Most definitely not! This is my tower, and you better remember it."
"Again, I apologize for my ignorance."
"I fault you not for it."
It is obvious that it's not my place to be demanding things here. I will call upon my courtier teachings.
"Let me hereby reintroduce myself with your deserved recognition. Madam your grace, my name is Ridder, humble knight-errant, at your service. Thank you for accepting me in your presence. I am honored."

I follow the goblin down the ladder to one story lower.

"But ofcourse, my lady. I will come with you at once."
"Watch your step.. It's best to take it slow."

A few minutes later we have settled down in what I presume to be the guest room, or more likely the break room. Flowers and weapons make an unsettling contrast.
"The sun is rising pretty fast already. It should be high noon in a few hours.."
The goblin sounds as if she wants to apologize for the lack of entertainment she can provide to guests. Instead of weakening the awkwardness, her shameful glances merely enforce it.

Come to think of it, I have been walking through the night to reach the tower in the morning. I am growing weary.

"Where am I to stay? I wish to rest for as long as I can."
The goblins eyes widen.
"Oh! Oh, I'm sorry. This way."
I follow her through the tower. I will ask her the questions now.
"If you so permit, I would like to ask some questions. I will respect your denial of them."

She remains silent for a while as if to consider her answers.
"..The.. uhm.. The flowers were my idea. I thought it would cheer everything up a bit. It would be exceptionally rude to sleep in their beds while I still smell of the road, yet it would also be rude to exploit their hospitality and befilth their bathwater. I will have a quick humble wash.

My kind is the Leferran, or the Northwalkers as we are called around here. As the name implies, we come from the rugged plains in the north where our long and sleek bodies have evolved to move fast and athletic against strong winds.

Your opinion however is likely work about as much as cabbage soup being as it comes from a naked man in a cage who mistook and attacked a topiary garden as an army of darkness...

"Sadly, circumstances have caused this to become my business. It would seem that your child is driving the human mad."

"I'm very sorry about this, but I ended up learning about this from the paladin you hung in a cage. Apparently, there's so much evil coming from your fetus, it overloaded his mind into thinking the bushes were an evil goblin horde. Tell me. Are you pregnent or not. Time is of the essence, and loss of a little dignity is not worth the loss of the kingdom."

Sir? You may have wished to try a bit more tact.

"Sadly, circumstances have caused this to become my business. It would seem that your child is driving the human mad."
"Hey, git out of here."
"I am very sorry about this, but the evil radiating from the fetus can only be described as.. truly fiendish. It warped the human's mind into thinking tropiaries were an army of evil goblins."
"Whot? That man's jus' insane. Now go away."
"Madam, you have to consider the consequences. One mad man is easy to deal with, but should more come this tower might be in serious jeopardy--"

Sir? I think she would do it. Back off a bit.

"Well then... I bet if I asked around, I could find out myself... I thought asking you would keep it private, but I'll just look for other methods. I'll check one more time for more details... He sensed the lingering effect of some sort of jinx"

(get to Paladin before she gets to you. Let him know that she had Nymphs Jinx and to follow your lead)

"Oh really? And how do you know that you aren't pregnant?"

"Oh really? And how do you know that you aren't pregnant?"
"Cos' I knew what I wos doin'."

The orc seems very convinced about her state of motherhood. Then unless its the man's seed still inside of her, which is unlikely due to the affair having happened several days ago, the evil is so strong it lingers inside of her still.
These women obviously have no idea what kind of devil they are dealing with.

We must investigate the cause directly, then.

"Well, we'll see who's right before long, won't we?"

It's investigation time! Time to leave out on an adventure to see this evil firsthand. As I asked before, so I can assuage my curiosity, who was the king you served?

"what ever you say. There's still somesort of thing going on with you. I'll stay around for about 4 months, and what was said in this room shall not leave this room. I thank you for your time"
Go to commander and ask if there's anything you can do to help around.
Also let commander know that the Paladin had his senses overloaded with some sort of devine evil from which the source is unknown. Mainly that you want to observe the paladin.

Also, have Lina concentrate with you and 'crazed paladin' so that you can prove the situation

>I'll stay around for about 4 months
I think Coriander might not like that.

You're probably right...
Ask to stay till the paladin is released, leave for this ally's army ground.

"....or you just ate something weird."
No. 77849 ID: e0499d

"Well, if not pregnency, the only other answer is that you ate something evil... anything you ate that's not plant or animal?"

Well, does it really irradiate from her?

Apologize, take her to the paladin for a closer scan. maybe is her bed?

Alternatively, wait till she dustoffs from the bed, to THEN scan her.

That's right.
Such a vicious source of evil. I have to investigate it. I have no doubt that this man is able to raise an army with the way these women speak of him. He is obviously charismatic and well-learned in the ways of leadership.
Time is of the essence.

I retrieve my gear and suit up. I wish the Commander the best and thank her for her hospitality, then head back to the breakroom where Lina looks to me.
Her questioning eyes already say what she wants to know.

"There is nothing wrong with Arabella. There is something greater in the air.. Something I must investigate at once."
"Oh.. so.. you're leaving?"

"With consequences unforesoon... the next time we meet we may meet as enemies."
"But don't let this confuse you. There will never be hate involved. Farewell, Lina."

You ask for my late lord as if this will make any difference on the future.
It is true that he is still strong in my heart, but does this love do anything for the world of today?
..Perhaps I have looked at this the wrong way.

"Come on, let's go. The evil here is not the source. It is but a lingering of a much greater darkness.. We are going to investigate it."
"Aaah--! Ow! What about my weapons and gear?"
"I will buy you new ones on the way."

Perhaps defeating this evil will help me redeem myself for the failure that took my lord's life.
I will defeat this evil in his name. The proud and true leader, the fallen but beloved..
