Once, I was a knight.
Proud and great.
My skill at the blade was only matched by my presence at the court.

Our kingdom was invincible.. or so I thought.

My arrogance was our downfall.

I failed to protect the king and his family. Now all of them are dead or missing... thus so is my life.

I am a failed knight with no lord to redeem me.

Only when I stopped talking did I notice how the atmosphere into the jolly tavern broke into pieces. The silence pierced my heart. I was used to it, but this time I had caused it.
But was it my fault, or the bartender's for asking about me?

Hey, piece of shit.

Suddenly I hear a voice rise up next to me.

I don't like people who brag.

The large fellow is obviously shortcoming in the mental area, but makes more than up for it with his physical prowess.

Now, now, Nickai.
The bartender interrupts.
Give the boy some space. He has obviously been through alot.

I could use some help deciding how to respond in this situation.

I will follow your peaceful suggestion.
Indeed, let us not cause a scene. I will buy you a drink.
I don't want your stinking pisswater, boy.

I will have none of this. This man is obviously corrupted by the physical edge he has over others.

Nickai, step down now or accept my challenge to duel!

Why you slimey little fuck..

Now, now, boys! Take it outside, will you? Stop causing a scene.
The bartender stops us. He sounds worried about his tavern, but confident that neither of us will seriously hurt eachother.

He follows me outside. Fighting with pole arms in an open area will be perfect for I am welltrained in spearfighting. Consequently, my spear is my main weapon.
Do you agree to battle with poles?

Sure thing. I will grind you to a mush anyway!

He grabs a thick and heavy pole from the street. It almost seems like a small tree.
I will fight with my spear... but I can only use the blunt end. The handicap should be negated by my familiarity with the weapon.

A large crowd gathers around us.

Well? You gonna fight me or you a coward?

This is pretty good stuff right off the bat but I just have one small technical request: It's pretty hard to follow who's talking sometimes, so maybe a format in which the protagonist's speech is distincted from the speech of other characters would help? Right now it's hard to tell if it's the oaf or the knight talkin'. Just throw quotes around speech, maybe only put bold on the protagonist's lines?

Getting someone to count down will be a good idea.
"Someone count down and give us a signal when to start to ensure a fair fight!"

A certain gentleman in the crowd raises his hand.
"I'll do it. Get ready... three.. two.."

I tighten my grip on my spear and get into position. Suddenly a heavy woman forces her way to the front of the crowd.
"Nickai! Don't get hurt! We need you in tomorrow's harvest."
"Don't worry, ma, I'll make short work of this outsider."
The oaf responds arrogantly.

"..one.. Fight!"

It's true. I have nothing to gain from winning this fight.
This man's mental handicap is so great that his mother is forced to look after him. He is no villain or bandit.. Just a giant fool.
If this village makes sure his strength is used for good causes like the harvest I have no right to pick a fight with him. Arrogance will hold no more sway over me.

"I did not know you were required at the harvest. I stand down."

The crowd around us falls silent, as does the man. A minute later, he laughs awkwardly.

I follow the goblin down the ladder to one story lower.

"But ofcourse, my lady. I will come with you at once."
"Watch your step.. It's best to take it slow."

A few minutes later we have settled down in what I presume to be the guest room, or more likely the break room. Flowers and weapons make an unsettling contrast.
"The sun is rising pretty fast already. It should be high noon in a few hours.."
The goblin sounds as if she wants to apologize for the lack of entertainment she can provide to guests. Instead of weakening the awkwardness, her shameful glances merely enforce it.

Come to think of it, I have been walking through the night to reach the tower in the morning. I am growing weary.

I find the style and choice of decoration in this tower rather... incongruous?

I take it that the Commander is a bit of a flower fancier? But are attacks really so common in this area as to necessitate what appears to be a small armory? And if so... how do you girls make a living out here, far from town as it is?

"Where am I to stay? I wish to rest for as long as I can."
The goblins eyes widen.
"Oh! Oh, I'm sorry. This way."
I follow her through the tower. I will ask her the questions now.
"If you so permit, I would like to ask some questions. I will respect your denial of them."
"No, it's okay."

But are attacks really so common in this area as to necessitate what appears to be a small armory? And if so... how do you girls make a living out here, far from town as it is?"
She remains silent for a while as if to consider her answers.
"..The.. uhm.. The flowers were my idea. I thought it would cheer everything up a bit. The weapons are still from the old layout of the tower, we just don't have enough men and women to wield them right now. As for a living.. I find Lina at work in the break room. I sit down across from her.
When she spots me she gets up to fix us a drink, but I gesture her to sit again. She understands the dire situation from my stern expression and returns to her seat.

"Lina, I have bad news. It appears that the orc in your company has consumed something terrible. I must know what she has eaten or where she has been in the last day."
"..Wh-where?"
"Yes. Where has the orc maiden been?"
"I-I don't know! We never share secrets, haha!"

... comon, you should know how to get a lady to act on emotion.
Make a deal.
She slept with you earlier didn't she.
So, go the long way around to the question
Get her aroused
Then use arousal to play a game.
it's called, trading secrets.

The Nymph's Jinx. A dreaded topic that brings a shadow over the most holy of unions.
I won't push Lina to explain it any further.

"I see. Please, tell me more about this new ally of the Commander's."
"Oh, he's a really amazing man.. He's gathering an army over here.."
She brings out a crude and small map depicting only the land around the tower, which has been drawn large and bombastic.
She points to some sort of rocky cave to the west.

"And he's really brave and suave. I don't know why he's gathering all these forces, but I hope we get to fight along side with him when the time comes."

"Okay.. Thank you.. I mean.. You're welcome.."

I head up the ladders to the bedroom. Luckily the orc is still sleeping there.
"Arabella."
She awakens slowly. The bed creaks under her weight.

"Cos' I knew what I wos doin'."

The orc seems very convinced about her state of motherhood. Then unless its the man's seed still inside of her, which is unlikely due to the affair having happened several days ago, the evil is so strong it lingers inside of her still.
These women obviously have no idea what kind of devil they are dealing with.

That's right.
Such a vicious source of evil. I have to investigate it. I have no doubt that this man is able to raise an army with the way these women speak of him. He is obviously charismatic and well-learned in the ways of leadership.
Time is of the essence.

I retrieve my gear and suit up. I wish the Commander the best and thank her for her hospitality, then head back to the breakroom where Lina looks to me.
Her questioning eyes already say what she wants to know.

You ask for my late lord as if this will make any difference on the future.
It is true that he is still strong in my heart, but does this love do anything for the world of today?
..Perhaps I have looked at this the wrong way.

"Come on, let's go. The evil here is not the source. It is but a lingering of a much greater darkness.. We are going to investigate it."
"Aaah--! Ow! What about my weapons and gear?"
"I will buy you new ones on the way."

Perhaps defeating this evil will help me redeem myself for the failure that took my lord's life.
I will defeat this evil in his name. The proud and true leader, the fallen but beloved..
