> “No one can really answer that question for you. You must answer it yourself.”
“What do you mean?”
> “You must convince yourself yes or no. You may be right, or you may be wrong, but either way, you will be certain with time. When we are wrong, that is how we learn about ourselves.”
“That is not very helpful for me. I’m sorry, father.”
> “Every living person goes through it. It was the will of the Primordial to bestow us with intelligence, and with intelligence, well, this struggle is inherent.”
It is really not what I wanted to hear, but I suppose I really did not know what I wanted to hear. I cannot cloud my head with this before the wedding. It does not bode well, and will probably only bring misfortune.
“Thank you, Father.”
> “I am sorry if I was unhelpful. It is been some time since I have offered counsel.”
“Well, on that subject, I did have one more question. Were orphans always treated so poorly?”
> “Ah, er, unfortunately that has been a constant since I was living. It is another plague of the intelligent mind, which is to look down on others. It is not in our nature to value others as equal. Past, present, and future this will be. When I was serving as a monk here before I attained my priesthood, I spoke with many an orphaned youth. This was only to discover that there was scarce compassion for the lowborn in this world.”
“I see.”
I take a quick look back to the altar to see that Tino is still asleep there. It is so quiet here that sleep would come easily to any of us. The light spilling through the slitted windows illuminating the gentle wisps of dust… The only problem is the smell. It is a combination of a sour, vinegar-like smell and a musty oldness. My guess is that whatever monsters inhabited this place before smelled foul, but now they are gone. Mr. Ortise seems to be cleaning up the mess, er, single-handedly. The people of the village have left, and that does not surprise me. This place needs work, but Pernille is so shorthanded now that the people have left to guard the east.
It is quiet here, and with Tino asleep, there is not much to do. Should I visit Arnel at the village, help Mr. Ortise to clean, or take a walk around the grounds? The sky is clear today, so it does not look like it will rain.
